FROM THE FESTIVAL DIRECTOR
MESSAGES 3
A warm welcome to the first NOOSA alive! festival program. This year we have created a new look and name with some wonderful additions to our beloved Festival fare. We are thrilled to have Opera Australia and Queensland Ballet back in town and some marvellous new talent never before featured in Noosa.
Come join us on Noosa River on Saturday afternoon of the first weekend culminating in a spectacular fireworks display and make sure you book tickets for our closing beach party with lots of fantastic entertainment. There is so much happening over the ten days that you will be spoilt for choice.
As usual the festival would not be possible without our amazing Festival Team (Management Committee; Festival Director; Office Staff; Production Crew;
Marketing and Publicity contractors; and Volunteers) whose passion and dedication make it possible to put on such an outstanding program. Our wonderfully generous Patrons and Festival Sponsors, our Friends of the Festival, and our Cultural Partners are an integral and a very important part of our Festival Family. Thank you for your support.
Finally I want to mention how sad I feel that the Noosa Federation of the Arts has closed its doors, after so many years of supporting the careers of young opera singers. Thank you to the outgoing committee for your generous donation to our festival in recognition of our shared passion for arts and culture.

Josephine Baker sashayed onto a Paris stage during the 1920s with a comic, yet sensual appeal that took Europe by storm.
Famous for barely-there dresses and no-holds-barred dance routines, her exotic beauty generated nicknames “Black Venus,” “Black Pearl” and “Creole Goddess.”
Admirers bestowed a plethora of gifts, including diamonds and cars, and she received approximately 1,500 marriage proposals. She maintained energetic performances and a celebrity status for 50 years until her death in 1975.
Josephine Baker had the voice of an angel and the heart of a lion.
With over five decades in showbiz, starting with international hit songs and movies in the 20s, she leaves behind great songs and a fascinating life story.
Melbourne jazz performer Juliarna Clark has selected favourites, including La Vie en Rose, Blue Skies, J’attendrai, Honeysuckle Rose, Tea for Two, Night and Day and Dinah, to craft a night of beautiful songs and fascinating Josephine facts -the sort of facts you share at dinner parties to appear erudite and witty!
Juliarna is joined by Australia’s finest- Dannie Bourne (piano), Myles White (guitar) and Richard Miller (clarinet) for this musical tribute delight.

Matthew Mitcham OAM
Cabaret - Double BillTwists and TurnsOn the 23 August 2008, a young Australian athlete made Olympic history. Coming from 30 points behind, and on his final dive, he scored 112.10 to shock himself and the diving world.
Matthew Mitcham OAM became Australia’s first male diving Olympic gold medallist since 1924, and the only diver ever in Olympic history, to produce a perfect 10 point score from all judges – winning the 2008 Beijing Olympics 10m platform title. Grinning with pride from front pages around the world, there was no hint of the personal demons that had led him to quit diving less than two years before his famous win at Beijing.
Based on his book of the same name, and told with the honesty and courage he is admired for, this live production of Twists and Turns is an inspiring story of a true champion – in and out of the pool.
Under The CoversYou can expect more effervescence, charm and hilariously-brutal honesty as Mathew delivers a few Public Service Announcements he’s learnt through trial and (mostly) error.
Accompanied by Spanky and pianist Matthew Ogle, this brand new all singing, all dancing production will make you feel better about your life choices in perfect 3-part harmony.
Twists and Turns and Under the Covers was created by Matthew Mitcham, award winning director Nigel Turner-Carroll and international cabaret sensation Spanky (aka Rhys Morgan).

Yes, it’s a cabaret, about a cabaret, within a cabaret – it’s pretty straight forward really. If you’re addicted to cabaret and love a combination of listening to great singing, having lots of laughs and getting a certificate at the end of it – this show will definitely be your “Music of the Night”.

God of Carnage Playwright Yasmina Reza expertly peels back the layers of well-instilled manners to expose the rotten core of humanity in God of Carnage.
Disguised as concerned parents of two boys who have just had a violent after-school altercation, the parents meet to discuss the matter in a civilised manner. However, as the evening develops, all things devolve into chaos.
Comedy of manners turns into full-blown farce in this ‘study in tension between civilised surface and savage instinct’.
Boys fight, parents meet, carnage happens.

When current or potential medical possibilities are in conflict with societal or religious values, the result may be an ethical impasse or crisis.
Modern-day medical ethics issues such as potential abnormality and early termination, the use of medical cannabis, organ donation, commercial surrogacy and gender transition are creating huge challenges for health professionals steeped in the tradition of the Hippocratic Oath.
Of all the contemporary issues, perhaps the most challenging is the issue of voluntary euthanasia.
Come and listen to this intriguing debate involving a panel of Australia’s leading minds discussing one of the greatest ethical challenges of our time.

THE Secret Garden Lunch with Wendy WhitelEy & Janet Hawley Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden at Lavender Bay is a hugely loved destination for Australian and overseas visitors.
After her husband, iconic artist Brett Whiteley, died in 1992, Wendy threw her grief into transforming an overgrown valley dump of unused railway land into a magical garden, designed like a painting.
Wendy’s long-time friend, Gold Walkley Award winning journalist Janet Hawley, has written a richly illustrated personal book telling the full story.
Meet Wendy and Janet talking about the Secret Garden, and see beautiful projected images.

Three men with something in common: they love to surf and are still active in their sport; they are renowned beyond their own culture for their ability to express the power of riding waves; and they are all passionate about Noosa.
Three authors and lifelong surfers discuss how surfing can be a life-changing (and life-affirming) experience.
Bob McTavish, once known as the “Mayor of Noosa”, is one of the world’s leading surfer/shapers, responsible for revolutionising surfboard design in the 1960s, and for first popularising Noosa as a surfing destination. A loveable rogue despite his deeper side, Bob’s two surf memoirs, Stoked and More Stoked, have become bestsellers.
Tom Wegener (American-born) was a solicitor in California until the surf bug bit
him and he gave up his career to design surfboards and travel the world looking for waves. This search led him to Noosa in 1998, where he fell in love, started a family and made his home. Today he is the most respected name in the world of sustainable wood surfboard production, has a PhD in sustainable technology and has published a well-received memoir, For the Love.
Phil Jarratt is regarded as one of the world’s leading surf journalists and historians, and is now a film-maker, whose documentary Men of Wood & Foam, screened on Foxtel’s History Channel before touring in Australia and abroad. A Noosa resident since 1990, Phil is the author of more than 30 books, many of them about surfing and related subjects. His latest, a surfing memoir called Life of Brine, will be published in July 2017.

21-30 JULY 2017 FILM 29
BOTTLE SHOCK synopsisWith an incredibly strong cast of Bill Pullman and Alan Rickman, the beauty of the Californian wine country showcased with a great collection of 70’s music to complement the musical score.
The movie is based on the true story of how Chateau Montelena, a Napa winery won a French blind wine tasting contest with their 1973 Chardonnay that sent the wine world into a frenzy.
The scenes of the confused French tasters trying to tell the difference between the French and California wines are unforgettable. The tasting has become known as “The Judgement of Paris”. This movie even has “a charming after taste”.
