INTRODUCTION

Digital media salespeople are consultative, critical-thinking, marketing professionals tasked with driving revenue by selling digital advertising. They accomplish this by understanding the digital ecosystem, recognizing clients’ marketing objectives, and providing impactful solutions.

This IAB Digital Media Sales Certification (DMSC) is the highest industry credential for digital media sales professionals. Individuals meeting eligibility requirements must pass a multiple-choice exam in order to earn the DMSC designation. Individuals who earn this certification have demonstrated their knowledge and competency in the area of digital media sales, and are dedicated to upholding high standards of ethical and professional practice.

The purpose of this study guide is to assist certification candidates preparing to take the DMSC exam. It contains useful information about exam and question format, requisite core digital media knowledge, and specialized content areas that will be tested. Spread throughout the guide are 15 sample exam questions (followed by detailed answer guides) to help acquaint candidates with question style and identify priority topics to review as they prepare for the exam. The study guide also provides links to areas on the IAB website as well as other helpful links which might provide useful in refreshing candidates’ familiarity with specific knowledge, capabilities, and skills that may appear on the exam.

A Candidate Handbook is also available on our Study Resources page, which describes all aspects of the certification process. The handbook contains eligibility criteria, information on registering for the exam, guidelines for taking the exam, relevant policies and requirements, and links to the application and other relevant information.

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE

Because the exam is designed to test the knowledge and skills of an experienced digital media seller, the content covered on it is very extensive. This study guide provides you with just a brief overview of each content area, followed by links to additional resources for you to review. We encourage you to first review the overview of a section, then read through content in the corresponding links. We also encourage you to research definitions for terminology included in the Exam Blueprint.

CHAPTER 1. ABOUT THE DMSC EXAM

EXAM FORMAT

The IAB Digital Media Sales certification exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions, which you will have two hours to complete.

Your appointment at the Pearson VUE testing lab is for two hours. You will have five minutes to agree to the nondisclosure agreement for the DMSC examination. Thereafter, you will have 1 hour and 55 minutes to take the exam. You are permitted to take a restroom break, but your break time counts towards the 1 hour and 55 minutes allotted to test.

It is the policy of the IAB to develop examinations utilizing a psychometrically valid process. The examination was developed by subject-matter experts under the guidance of psychometricians (experts in measurement and test development) and is designed to measure the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform competently as a digital media sales-person. The exam questions were written and edited by industry subject-matter experts working with test development experts.

SCORING

Of the 100 questions on the exam, eighty of the questions are scored, and 20 are “pilot” questions for statistical purposes that are not scored You will not know which questions are real and which are pilots. You are scored only on the 80 exam questions and only correct answers are counted. You will not receive feedback on the 20 piloted questions.

Like the exam questions, the passing point or the score you need to achieve in order to pass was also determined utilizing valid psychometric procedures. The exam was built to be scored on a pass/fail basis, to assess whether an individual possesses a minimum level of knowledge, capabilities, and skills deemed necessary to successfully perform the job of a digital media sales professional. The IAB follows best practices in all of its test development activities and has a high degree of confidence that only those who meet the competency requirements pass the examination.

Candidates will receive their score report at the test center, which will designate their pass/fail status. Detailed raw and/or percentage scores will not be provided, since the exam was developed for diagnostic, rather than comparative, purposes.

Successful candidates will be notified that they have passed and will be provided instructions for completing the certification process. Candidates who fail will receive a diagnostic report of their overall performance on each content area of the exam. This information is provided so candidates can see their areas of greatest weakness, and prepare themselves to retake the exam.

EXAM CONTENT OVERVIEW

Successful digital media salespeople should have a fundamental understanding of the four areas covered in the exam:

1. Comprehending the Digital Advertising Ecosystem. The digital ecosystem has become ever more complex in the past few years. What was once a relatively simple buyer-seller transaction now involves a host of intermediaries, various formats, and multiple platforms. Successful sales professionals understand the digital landscape. They possess a

deep working knowledge of current digital media formats, platforms, tools, and technologies; and are adept at applying industry-accepted standards and policies to their work. 2. Selling Digital Media. Possessing knowledge and skills about digital media is important, but successfully applying that knowledge in serving clients is the mark of true digital media sales professionals. They can identify client needs and align their recommendations with client objectives. Successful digital media sellers work with their client to establish campaign KPIs, are able to design and present compelling client proposals, and negotiate contractual agreements.

3. Managing Digital Advertising Campaigns. Successful digital media sales professionals understand the operational processes required to implement campaigns. While they might not be hands-on during the period when campaigns are launched and monitored, they do remain actively informed of campaign progress and are able to make optimization recommendations to meet campaign delivery requirements.

4. Analyzing Campaign Performance. Digital media campaigns offer a world of data, and successful salespeople have the ability to analyze results, convey them in a way that is clear and compelling to their clients, and open the dialogue for new opportunities.

The best starting point for studying for the DMSC exam is to make sure you feel comfortable with the specialized knowledge, and various tools, equipment and resources, and acronyms listed in the Exam Blueprint. Test questions may specifically assess your familiarity with these core knowledge items, and all test questions have been written assuming that you have a command of them. CHAPTER 2. MEDIA MATH CALCULATIONS

CALCULATIONS

Digital media sales professionals should know how to define and utilize the most frequently used digital media pricing and performance-based math formulas. You will need to know how to calculate pricing math and performance math, such as:

• Cost Per Thousand (CPM) = Cost x 1,000 ÷ impressions

• Cost Per Click (CPC) = Cost ÷ Clicks

• Cost Per Sale (CPS) = Cost ÷ Sales

• Effective Cost Per Thousand (eCPM) Total Cost ÷ Total Impressions x 1000

• Click Through Rate (CTR) = Clicks ÷ Impressions

• Cost Per Action (CPA) = Cost ÷ Actions

Sellers should be able to solve for any unknown variable among these formulas. Let’s look at CPM, as an example: CPM = (Cost ÷ Ad Impressions) x 1000 OR Cost = CPM x (Impressions ÷ 1000)

This formula divides the cost of an ad by the size of the audience in thousands. A corresponding exam question might provide Media Cost and Ad Impressions, then ask you to solve for CPM. Or, it might provide the CPM and either Media Cost or Ad Impressions, then ask you to solve for the other missing variable. These questions may be

proposed in terms of an “on-the-job” scenario, for example: Sample Media Math Question An agency has a budget of $50,000 for a native campaign at a CPM of $5. How many impressions can they expect? A. 100,000 B. 500,000 C. 1,000,000 D. 10,000,000 (Answer: D)

In the course of managing his or her daily business, a digital media sales professional should know how to use both a calculator and spreadsheet software in order to perform media mathematics. Hand-held calculators will not be permitted into the computer-based testing labs where you will take your Certification exam, however an electronic calculator will be provided on the computer you will use there.

Appendix B: Media Math Formulas contains a list of pricing and performance formulas that you should become familiar with. CHAPTER 3. COMPREHENDING THE DIGITAL ADVERTISING ECOSYSTEM

This section corresponds to Section A in the Exam Blueprint. 37.5% of the questions on the certification exam will be de- voted to topics outlined in this chapter.

EXPLAIN MARKETING MODELS (BLUEPRINT SECTION: A1)

While digital is still often referred to as “new media,” it is rooted in foundational marketing principles common to all types of media. In order to sell effectively, sales people must understand how marketers, media planners and media buyers think about the campaigns they hope to deliver.

Audience Profiles

By analyzing their current customer base and determining the commonalities among them, advertisers can more specifically target their marketing campaigns, which often results in more effective recruitment of new customers.

A target audience is a select group of potential or current consumers, which a business decides to aim its marketing and advertising strategies at in order to sell a product or service. A target audience profile is a description of a customer that includes demographic, geographic, and psychographic characteristics, as well as buying patterns and purchase history.

Advertisers look for ways to identify and target their ideal customer, and also organize media strategies to expand target audience reach. This involves using several different kinds of data.

Audience Data Sources (First, Second, Third Party)

An advertiser can use 1st party data, 2nd party data, or 3rd party data to target their campaigns. When we refer to data as 1st party, 2nd party or 3rd party, we are really referring to the ownership of that data.

A first party collects information from or about users and is the owner or controller of the website or service with which

the user interacts directly. An example of 1st party data collection would be a credit card that collects and then anonymizes data from their own customers about purchase trends and personal preferences. Sources of 1st party data can include: Website analytics data, CRM (Customer Relationship Management) data, email data, previous campaign data, inbound or onsite search data, brand surveys, user interest data, and brand app data.

A second party is a first party that sells or shares data to a non-affiliated website or service (a 3rd party). An example of a 2nd party use of data would be if a credit card company shared de-identified customer data with an airline company looking to market to affluent travelers. From the perspective of the airline, this data is “second party” because they are not affiliated with the credit card company (they paid for the use of the data), but there is a direct relationship to the 1st party data owner. If a web publisher were to share online user data with an advertiser for a fee, this would be another example of 2nd party data use.

A third party collects information from or about users from a non-affiliate website or service. Third party data is any information collected by an entity that does not have a direct relationship with the user the data is being collected on. Often times, third party data is generated on a variety of websites and platforms and is then aggregated together by a third-party data provider such as a DMP (Data Management Platform.)

When collecting user data, PII (Personally Identifiable Information) that could be used to potentially identify a specific individual such as name, physical address, or date of birth is considered sensitive information and prohibited from use; but 1st parties can collect this data and transform it into non-PII data for targeting marketing campaigns. Personal information that is “de-identified” is not considered sensitive.

Other means of collecting anonymized or “de-identified” data include Cookies (a small text file that lives on a browser and is used to track users); “Device IDs” (Apple’s IDFA or Google Android’s Advertiser ID, which both allow tracking to occur on mobile devices); and IP (Internet Protocol) addresses, among others. Data collected / inferred from these sources such as browsing history, geographic location, sales transactions, and so on, can be used for advertising purposes.

Another digital tracking technique that can be used to gather location-based data that can help tie offline and online consumer activity together are Beacons. While beacon has historically been used as a catchall term for a digital tracking pixel, the term is taking on new meaning as proximity-based technology companies rebrand this word to refer to technology that enables mobile apps to understand the geographic location of its user and then deliver relevant content to them based on their immediate environment

An audience segment is a group of persons (site visitors, app users, etc.) who have been identified (anonymously) as sharing a range of attributes (demographic, technological, behavioral and more). The audience segments that a DMP creates allows media-buyers (advertisers) and media-sellers (publishers) to purchase, target and sell media more effectively.

Consumer Decision Journey

Salespeople’s recommendations regarding media placements, pricing structure, and creative considerations should vary relative to their clients’ goals along the purchase path. Consequently, it is important for digital media salespeople to understand the most common purchase path models, and how they might be incorporated into digital advertising strategies.

The traditional consumer buying funnel, sometimes called the traditional purchase path, sales funnel, or decision-making funnel has many variations, however they all illustrate the way consumers move from “awareness” of a new product or brand, through to “interest” or “consideration” in learning more about it and creating a “desire” or “preference” for it, and ending in an ultimate “action” typically in the form of a purchase.

Advertisers often organize “top of funnel” campaigns around Brand Awareness marketing tactics – which are designed to communicate a simple, positive brand message to build consumer awareness and affinity for a brand, attracting new potential customers. “Lower funnel” marketing tactics typically result in DR (Direct Response) campaigns, which tend to have an aggressive call to action for the end user to do something (such as download a coupon, sign up for a test drive, or visit an in-store location.) These remarketing tactics are targeted towards consumers who have already demonstrated an interest in the brand or product.

The consumer decision journey is an updated take on the traditional linear buying funnel. Reflecting the digital connectedness and social nature of consumers today, this model promotes a “purchase loop” that recognizes the roles of active information gathering, post-purchase experiences, and loyalty in consumer purchase behavior.

Despite this comparative view, digital vs. traditional media is rarely an “either/or” decision. Marketers look for opportunities to incorporate complementary digital and traditional tactics in a cohesive campaign. For example, an advertiser wishing to penetrate a local market may supplement a regional television buy with a finely targeted digital campaign focused on zip codes, through the use of Geographic targeting. But this is just one example.

ISP Targeting: Targeting based on Internet Service Provider. Can be used as an alternative form of geo-targeting.

Keyword Targeting: Targeting ad delivery based on site keywords. Advertising systems scan the text of websites and return advertisements for appropriate advertisers or products based on those keywords. These systems also allow advertisers to target ad delivery to sites with keywords matching their product or target audience interests.

Lookalike Targeting: An advertising technique which consists of reaching out an audience similar to an advertiser’s customers. The original profile of audience is determined via CRM data or website behaviors and is then matched against anonymous user pools by a dedicated marketing vendor, allowing advertisers to address prospects which are predicted to be similar to their existing customer base.

Retargeting: Advertising technique in which online advertising is targeted to consumers based on their previous Internet actions.

Agencies come in all shapes and sizes, but can usually be grouped into a few broader categories, which include:

Full service Agencies: Large size agencies that deal with all types of advertising. Full service agencies employ

The focus is on online advertisements, techniques such as sending personal messages on mobile phones, etc. The ad campaigns they produce are interactive, emphasize new technologies and concepts, and can be very innovative.

Creative Boutiques: The sole function of a creative shop is to create the actual ads that will appear for a campaign. These tend to be small sized agencies with their own copywriters, directors, and creative people. Their goal is to build creative and innovative ads.

Media Buying Agencies: These agencies are responsible for the media buys placed for advertising campaigns. This can include all types of media, from scheduling TV spots to planning digital placements, to radio buys and more. They will supervise and confirm whether ads have been displayed or broadcast in the proper place and time, and collect reports to analyze the success of media purchases. This is the type of agency that media sellers will contact and work with most frequently.

Digital Content Distribution Models

Let’s take a look at how publishers distribute their content to consumers. There are 3 main models for distributing content: Distributors, Syndicators, and Aggregators.

Distributors: Distributors are what we typically think of when we think of a publisher. They organize and disseminate content. They usually have a team that creates the content, and then they release it to the public through their owned and operated properties, such as their website. An example of this would be the NY Times.

Syndicators: Syndicators “push out” (syndicate) content. They have a team that creates content but they do not own the sites that release the content. Instead, syndicators will sell the content to websites. An example of this is the Associated Press

Aggregators: Aggregators “pull in” (aggregate) content. Aggregators do not create the content that they display on their website. Instead, they use technology to pull in content. Or, they may buy the content and display it on their site. An example of this might be Google News.

It’s important to note that one website can be all three of these. A single property does not need to be either a distributor, a syndicator or an aggregator. One example of this is USA Today. USA Today creates its own content, and distributes that to its readers, therefore they are a distributor. They also sell their content to other entities, so there may other publishers that are also running USA Today content, therefore they are also a syndicator. Lastly, they do buy content from other sources, such as the AP, so they are pulling in content from other sources, making them also an aggregator. In this example, they are all three.

Understanding the Digital Media Value Chain

Of course, all of this publisher inventory must be monetized through advertising sold by a sales team. Direct sales teams sell directly to a buyer (agency or brand) whereas indirect sales teams sell through a partner or affiliate (like a rep firm, or selling only via an ad network or exchange). They each offer benefits, depending on what the advertiser/ client needs.

When considering different ad formats, it’s important to remember that almost all ad formats can be delivered to end users across a wide range of devices:

Desktop / Laptop: Often referred to in general as “Desktop” – these are the devices typically thought of as “computers’ such as a MacBook Pro or a Dell laptop machine.

Mobile Smartphone & Tablet: Often referred to collectively as “Mobile” devices, these are really two types of device: Your smartphone, such as an Apple iPhone or a Samsung Android device; and your tablet, such as an Apple iPad.

Connected TV: A television set that is connected to the Internet via OTT devices, Blu-ray players, streaming box or stick, and gaming consoles, or has built-in internet capabilities (i.e., a Smart TV).

Over-the-Top (OTT): An Over-the-Top Device is a device that can connect to a TV (or functionality within the TV itself) to facilitate the delivery of Internet-based video content (i.e., streaming boxes, media streaming devices, Smart TV’s and gaming consoles). Examples include streaming devices such as Apple TV, Google Chromecast, or Roku; as well as game consoles such as an Xbox or a Wii.

Smart TV: A subset of Connected TV. Examples include LG Smart TV, Samsung Smart TV, etc.

Digital Out-of-Home (DOOH): Also referred to as Out-of-Home (OOH) or outdoor media; this is advertising that reaches consumers while they are outside the home, typically via digital signage. This can also refer to digital kiosks or video content broadcast on digital billboards. It can refer to the television screens that some larger buildings have installed in elevators, or the digital screen on the top of your gas pump at the local gas station, or digital signs at your local bus stop.

Internet of Things (IoT): This category includes the extended network digital devices such as wearables (i.e an Apple Watch, a Fitbit, a Google Glass device, etc.) or home appliances or in-car screens or systems where advertising can appear. The term ‘Internet of Things’ refers to the interconnection via the internet of an ever-expanding list of computing capabilities embedded in everyday objects.

Understanding Different Ad Formats

Search Advertising

Search ads appear as text ads on search engine results pages. These Paid Search results display above or to the right of organic search results. While organic search results are the results provided based solely on relevancy and does not cost the website anything when the user clicks the link (the specialization in which is known as Search Engine Optimization), paid search results are based on relevancy and potential revenue for the search engine provider. The brand or website pays a fee to the search engine if the user clicks on the search ad. Paid search ads can also appear on website content pages.

The practice of providing search advertising solutions is known as Search Engine Marketing or SEM. The process of setting up a search campaign involves planning your PPC (pay-per-click) marketing objectives; conducting keyword research; calculating the maximum bid you are willing to pay to win an impression for a given user; creating lists of keywords you want to positively target and negative keywords – keywords you want to avoid showing up in search results for; creating your search advertising campaign by writing search ads, linking those ads to landing pages; setting up search campaign tracking; and then once you set your campaign live, you should optimize your keyword settings based on factors such as your Google Adwords Quality Score.

Email Marketing

Email marketing is a form of direct marketing that uses electronic mail as a means of communicating commercial or fundraising messages to an audience. In its broadest sense, every email sent to a potential or current customer could be considered email marketing. Display Advertising

Display banners are graphical advertising messages, generally set in a box at the top, bottom or side of page content. Display banners tend to be colloquially divided into two categories: “Standard banners” which are banners with a simple image or animation, and a single click-through action; and “Rich media” which are interactive, complex banner ads that can include advanced features like video, audio, or other elements that encourage viewers to interact and engage with the content such as games, picture galleries, expandable panels, and so on. While standard banners typically have only a backup gif and a “polite load” asset (a simple graphic file with a light file weight that displays in the ad slot), a rich media ad can contain many assets beyond the initial polite load.

One important aspect of display banners these days is the concept of building ads that have a responsive design. Responsive web design enables a web page to respond to the user's digital environment based on screen size, platform and device orientation (vertical or horizontal.) Responsive design is a web design technology based in HTML5 coding (unlike Flash, which uses HTML, and cannot function on many mobile devices.) Just as coding web pages in HTML5 makes them function seamlessly across different devices, building ad creative in HTML5 will help ensure that the ad will display on any device. This eliminates the need to build specific ads for mobile placements vs. desktop placements. With a single ad placement, the ad should display correctly to users on many different devices.

The IAB Ad Portfolio, updated in July 2017, is a set of recommendations for ad units, formats and ad functionality created by the IAB industry working group on ad formats. The new ad portfolio in 2017 marks a major change in ad unit specifications. The ad unit specifications changed from fixed pixel sizes to aspect ratio based flexible ads and LEAN guidance, for an improved end-user ad experience. Aspect ratio is the ratio of width to height of the ad creative. E.g. 1:1 aspect ratio means that the ad unit always has equal height and width. Publishers, Ad Tech Companies, Creative Shops and Media Agencies should all adopt these and other flexible ad sizes specified in the New Ad Portfolio by 2018.

The New Ad Portfolio also requires advertisers to follow L.E.A.N. guidance when building advertisements. LEAN stands for Light, Encrypted, Ad choice supported, Non-invasive ads. For Ads to meet these guidelines, they must be:

L: Light. Limited file size with strict data call guidelines.

E: Encrypted. Assure user security with https/SSL compliant ads.

A: Ad Choices Support. All ads should support DAA’s consumer privacy programs.

N: Non-invasive/Non-disruptive. Ads that supplement the user experience and don’t disrupt it. This includes covering content and sound enabled by default.

Even if an ad is Interactive i.e. contains animation, video, more than one click-through etc. it should still be LEAN!

Native Advertising

Native advertising is a concept encompassing both an aspiration as well as a suite of ad products. It is clear that most advertisers and publishers aspire to deliver paid ads that are so cohesive with the page content, assimilated into the design, and consistent with the platform behavior that the viewer simply feels that they belong. To achieve this, advertisers deploy tactical ad products, and the IAB has identified the six categories of ad unit types most commonly used to this end:

In-Feed Units: Text and/or graphical “headlines” sold within content of other sites. Common within social media sites and news sites.

Paid Search Units: Text advertising deeply integrated into search results pages.

Recommendation Widgets: A suggestion list of (paid) headlines well integrated into pages and helpful to targeted users.

Promoted Listings: A suggestion list of (paid) products or services, integrated into recommendation engines to be helpful to targeted users.

In-Ad with Native Elements: Native-like elements within IAB standard ad display ad units.

Custom Units: Other paid ads intended to integrate into the content of web pages, but do not fall into other native ad categories.

Quite simply, a social media ad is any kind of paid content on a social media network. The options run from a one-off promoted Tweet or Facebook post to a full-scale campaign with major budgets attached. Each social network offers different options. Sponsored Content

Content Marketing is the use of storytelling to build relationships with consumers by providing them with something useful or entertaining. Sponsored content is material in an online publication which resembles the publication's editorial content but is paid for by an advertiser and intended to promote the advertiser's product. If native advertising is an umbrella term for ads that mirror the environment they appear in, sponsored content are brand sponsored articles and videos that appear on sites and social platforms.

Digital Audio Advertising

Digital audio ads appear in content for partially or entirely ad-support online radio stations, online versions of terrestrial radio stations, on-demand streaming services and music or spoken-word audio content delivered within a site or app.

Digital Audio Ad Types include:

Recorded Spots — Typically available in standard lengths such as :15, :30, and :60, these spots can run independently or within a commercial stop-set with other units. They are pre-recorded and sometimes include a clickable on-screen

Native Ads — These spots are often read by a podcast host, and can include an endorsement. Length of these spots tends to be irregular. Native ads are more often associated with podcasts. These units can be permanently integrated into the program or dynamically inserted. Positioning can include pre-roll, mid-roll, and post-roll.

Branded Channels/Playlists — Streaming platforms offer customized channels and playlists that can be branded for an advertiser, including audio elements as well as on screen and marketing elements.

Branded Podcasts — Podcast platforms offer branded partnerships where the content can be sponsored. The presence of the brand in the programming can vary from brand mentions to editorial integration to sponsor participation in the development of the content. Website and marketing elements can be included.

Voice Activation Ads — Some platforms offer integration with a technology that enables listeners to respond to an ad in hands-free mode by simply speaking. Specific calls-to-action might be to have information emailed or texted to the user, enabling a connection between the advertiser and the consumer.

Successful digital media salespeople understand and adhere to industry compliance standards and policies, whether they are regulatory, non-regulatory, or self-regulatory.

Federal Regulations

First, it is important to understand the difference between regulation and self-regulation. The digital advertising industry is primarily self-regulated, which means guidelines are set by the governing bodies, such as the IAB, and are followed by industry businesses. Regulation, on the other hand, is set by the government, and failure to follow these laws can result in federal punishment. As a seller, you are responsible to know what they are, and are encouraged to be aware of these laws, particularly laws regarding the advertising of alcohol, pharmaceuticals, and the limitations on targeting ads to minors. Self-Regulatory Policies on Privacy and Behavioral Advertising

Industry Viewability Standards

Traditional offline advertising cannot accurately measure whether an ad was viewed. While there are some limitations, digital advertising has more transparent ways to measure whether a consumer has an opportunity to see and interact with an ad.

Viewability answers the question: did the consumer have the opportunity to see the ad that the advertiser paid for? Measuring viewability depends on calculable information like where the ad appears on the browser, for how long, and how the consumer navigates on the page.

The IAB and MRC define viewable, desktop display and video ads as follows:

• Desktop Display: At least 50% of the pixels are in view for 1 continuous second

• Desktop Video: At least 50% of the pixels are in view for 2 continuous seconds

For example, a display ad may appear above the fold on a browser window.

That typically deems it viewable. But if the consumer scrolls down quickly in less than a second and, subsequently, less than half the ad is on the screen, the ad is now deemed not viewable. Another example: a consumer scrolls below the fold and sees an ad. That ad is viewable. But if the consumer does not scroll down or scrolls down too quickly then the ad is not viewable.

It’s also important to understand that there are limitations to capturing viewability data. Tracking viewability requires using flash technology, or Javascript code, or something called the ‘geometric method’ - and each method has its limitations. In other words, it is very unlikely to be able to gather viewability data about 100% of your impressions.

It’s important to understand that just because an impression does not have viewability data associated with it does not necessarily mean that the impression is fraudulent - or even that the ad was not viewable in that case.

Still, viewability is often talked about as a foundational performance metric. It allows advertisers to determine if their ad has an opportunity to be seen.

Understanding Ad Fraud

Click fraud and bot traffic are some of the most-cited concerns among US media agencies and brand marketers today. Internet fraudsters use tricks to inflate advertising counts. Tricks like “pixel stuffing,” where an ad designed to appear at 1,024 by 480 pixels is crammed into a one-by-one pixel square, but still counted as an impression. There’s also “ad stacking,” where multiple ads are programmed for a single slot.

But the biggest fraud of all is the use of “bots”, software programs designed to mimic the activities of human browsers. Such programs can drive huge amounts of traffic to websites, and can even scroll through a site and click on links, just as a human browser would. The elimination of this non-human traffic is a great concern for both buyers and sellers alike.

Digital Media Sellers must be ready to speak to buyers about their publisher’s philosophy around viewability, fraud, and brand safety and should be able to explain how they are working internally and with technologies to combat and measure these issues. Additionally, buyers are heavily incentivized to have ad fraud tracking, reporting, and optimization strategies to minimize the impact that fraudulent impression might have on campaign effectiveness.

In 2017, the Interactive Advertising Bureau ordered all of its members to register with the anti-fraud Trustworthy Accountability Group.

TAG was conceived in 2015 by the American Association of Advertising Agencies, the Association of National Advertisers and the Interactive Advertising Bureau to act as a stamp of approval for ad sellers. The registration process

determines that a company is a legitimate player and not a fraudulent entity such as a malware distributor or bot net disseminator. Possessing knowledge and skills about digital media is important, but successfully applying that knowledge in serving clients is the mark of true digital media sales professionals. They not only know about all of the types of advertising available, but can align their recommendations with client objectives and available third-party research. Successful digital media sellers effectively prospect for new clients, understand their needs, make intelligent media recommendations, and negotiate the specifics of an order.

This section corresponds to Section B of the Exam Blueprint. 32.5 % of the Certification Exam will be devoted to topics outlined in this section.

IDENTIFY CLIENT (BLUEPRINT SECTION B1)

Identifying and prospecting for new clients is an important undertaking for digital media sales professionals. They should know how to select prospecting tools in order to identify potential prospects. This typically requires salespeople to research prospects’ businesses and research prospects’ industries, through the use of the following tools:

After completing the needs assessment, digital media salespeople should have gathered all necessary information and feel well-positioned to secure a Request for Proposal (RFP) from the client, detailing the specific objectives, parameters, and budget associated with a prospect’s next campaign.

ALIGN DIGITAL ADVERTISING SOLUTIONS WITH CLIENT NEEDS (BLUEPRINT SECTION B3)

From there, digital media salespeople look to determine digital advertising product recommendations connected with clients’ objectives, assets, and expectations for the campaign. They will also select targeting solutions, identify applicable digital media technology partners, and confirm technical capabilities among systems.

To accomplish this effectively, successful digital media salespeople need a strong knowledge of:

As rich media technologies and larger ad units emerged, marketers also included measures of interactivity, such as how deeply users interact with their ads and how much time they spend doing so. With the popularity of digital video advertising and a desire for integrated, omnichannel marketing campaigns, media buyers increasingly demand digital performance metrics they can connect across all channels, such as gross rating points and target rating points.

It is the product of the percentage of an audience reached by an advertisement, times the frequency they see it in a given campaign (frequency × % reached). For example, a television advertisement that is aired 5 times reaching 50% of the audience each time it is aired would have a GRP of 250 (5 × 50%).

TARGET RATING POINTS (TRPs): metric used to measure the size of the specific TARGET audience reached by a specific media vehicle, within the larger audience population. TRPs = Reach among target audience (%) x Average frequency

Pages and documents within the Measurement Guidelines section of the IAB website provides detailed measurement guidelines specific to different digital ad formats.

In addition, measurability guidelines have been published by Making Measurement Make Sense (3MS), a cross-industry coalition committed to developing brand-building digital metrics and cross-platform measurement solutions.

When crafting a proposal for a client, digital sellers will need to understand which products can be combined to achieve the client’s goals. Any prior history of success with the client or a similar advertiser can be used as a guide in making recommendations. And case studies or testimonials to reinforce these past successes will help the advertiser to see how the recommendation could benefit them.

As an exercise, review the examples of client objectives listed in the previous section, “Conduct Needs Assessment,” and ask yourself what the best combination of products from your company would work in each situation.

Digital media salespeople need to know how to make data-driven decisions at critical points of the sales cycle. Specifically, prior to proposal generation, they should be able to articulate raw data points from independent and

DESIGN AND PRESENT CLIENT PROPOSAL (BLUEPRINT SECTION B5)

Next, digital media salespeople must fully evaluate the digital media Request For Proposal in order to move the process forward. They must obtain digital media pricing, evaluate digital pricing models (e.g. performance-based vs. fixed) most appropriate for the campaign and obtain digital media budget levels outlined by the client.

Once this is complete, salespeople need to determine available digital media products in inventory, input proposal data and other requested documentation into the client’s spreadsheets and/or third party proposal systems, and emphasize the value proposition of the digital media solution.

To accomplish all of this, they should be familiar with using the following:

• Internal proposal management systems

• Spreadsheet and presentation software (most commonly, Excel and PowerPoint)

• Media mathematics

• Performance-based pricing

• Programmatic buying systems

• Guaranteed/reserved pricing

• Pre-emptible/non-reserved pricing

• Flat-rate pricing

NEGOTIATE CONTRACTUAL AGREEMENT (BLUEPRINT SECTION B6)

Once a proposal has been submitted to a potential buyer, a digital media salesperson may have the opportunity to negotiate the details of the proposal before closing a deal. Since negotiation could occur after a few days or weeks, salespeople should first reconfirm pricing, budget, and inventory availability by checking their ad avails and referencing its rate cards.

Additionally, the seller should reconfirm the client’s campaign objectives and parameters, as these may have changed from the initial proposal.

In instances when the purchase is not being made programmatically, a buyer and seller will agree on the campaign proposal, and then the seller will issue an IO (insertion order) for the buyer to sign.

Included in the IO will be the details of the campaign – ad units to run, number of impressions per ad unit, cost per ad unit, targeting or rich media needs and pricing, and any other products the client wants – as well as the terms and conditions of the agreement, referred to as the “Ts & Cs.”

The IAB has created standard terms and conditions that buyers and sellers generally follow, however buyers can still negotiate for alterations to this section in the IO. For the exam, you should read and understand the industry standard Ts & Cs.

And finally, in order to close the deal, salespeople must confirm success metrics and sign and secure the IO with their clients.

Successful digital media sales professionals understand the ad operations required to implement their campaigns. While they might not be hands-on when campaigns are launched and monitored, they remain actively informed of their progress and intercept problems that threaten to arise.

This section corresponds to Section C in the Detailed Content Outline found in Appendix B. Of the 80 total graded items on the Certification exam, 8 questions (10%) will be devoted to topics outlined in this section.

LAUNCH DIGITAL ADVERTISING CAMPAIGNS (BLUEPRINT SECTION C1)

Before digital media sales professionals prepare to hand off the campaign to the ad operations

process, they must confirm the requirements for launch of a digital campaign one final time in order to ensure a timely launch of the digital advertising campaign. This requires salespeople to have a foundational understanding of both ad operations and account management. Specifically, they should be familiar with the purpose and common elements of the following as they pertain to digital advertising:

Tags: Code that advertiser provides to publisher that calls the advertiser’s server in order to deliver a specific ad creative

Pixels: A 1 x 1 dot embedded on a web page which can be referenced by a third party server to track activity; used to collect data for Website and ad delivery analytics such as registration, conversions, and targeting

MONITOR DIGITAL ADVERTISING CAMPAIGNS (BLUEPRINT SECTION C2)

Digital media salespeople’s jobs do not stop once the campaign is live. It is their responsibility to work closely with ad operations and/or account management teams to monitor if the digital advertising campaign is on pace and troubleshoot digital advertising campaign issues that arise. It is also incumbent on salespeople to periodically evaluate if the advertising campaign meets client’s success metrics, and to provide recommendations for a client in response to digital advertising campaign issues and opportunities.

Pacing refers to the process of ensuring that a campaign is going to fulfill according to schedule. A campaign could be designated to pace evenly (all of its impressions are spaced out in equal amounts throughout each day/week of the flight) or unevenly (allocated impression levels will increase or decrease at predetermined times throughout the flight).

OPTIMIZE DIGITAL ADVERTISING CAMPAIGNS (Blueprint Section: C3)

Campaign Optimization refers to the process of tracking the pacing and the performance of a campaign, and making changes to ensure both are successful.

Reporting refers to the process of keeping the buyer informed on how the campaign is pacing and performing, as well as any optimization changes that are being made.

ANALYZING CAMPAIGN DELIVERY (BLUEPRINT SECTION D1)

Effective digital media salespeople conduct mid- and post-campaign analysis in order to measure performance and identify optimization opportunities. Using known campaign success metrics, media mathematics, and spreadsheet and/or presentation software, digital media sales professionals know how to collect data reports and evaluate data reports against confirmed success metrics and objectives. Once performance gaps are identified, they can readily identify successful areas of the digital advertising campaign and use that information to generate a digital advertising campaign wrap-up report.

ANALYZING CAMPAIGN PERFORMANCE AGAINST KPIS (BLUEPRINT SECTION D2)

Skilled digital media salespeople consistently communicate performance results with their clients, and are adept at using these discussions to deepen their relationship and set up for future successful media buys. This requires the sales professionals to first determine the best method to report campaign findings to the client.

You can stay current on the latest data in digital media with research and analysis by reviewing the IAB’s website and keeping up with the many online trade magazines, newsletters, and blogs. It is also important to pull from your own experience as a digital media seller as well as working with sales

Command of this step allows digital media salespeople to leverage wrap-up findings to identify new business opportunities, teeing up a future media buy from the same advertiser. Media Planning & Buying

- Ad Agency: A company that brands hire to build, execute and manage advertising initiatives for them, providing services such as creative generation, advertising strategy development, research, and media buying.

- Media Management System: Tools media buyers use to manage complex campaigns and brand assets, such as images and data.

- In-house Media Planning: Same functions as an ad agency, but instead of outsourcing this work, a brand will directly employ a team of people to do this work.

- Holding Company: A parent company that owns numerous agencies (creative and/or planning and buying; traditional and/or digital), as well as ad tech companies such as Trading Desks.

Content Creators

- Publishers: Entities that professionally produce digital media content (text, images, audio or video).

- Social Sites: Sites whose primary focus is communication between groups of approved individuals who are typically part of an ever-expanding social circle.

- User Generated Content: Any type of content (text, images, audio or video) that is created by non- professionals.

- Brand Content: Content, rather than advertising, that is created and disseminated by brands.

- Portals: Destination sites that provide WWW search, email, chat, maps, content (aggregated and/or owned) and other functionality.

Media Vendors

- Publisher: Entities that professionally produce digital media content (text, images, audio or video); in this category, this includes any site (professional or non-professional) that is ad-supported.

- Exchange: A sales channel between pubs, buyers and networks, aggregating inventory via an online interface that facilitates automated auction-based buying/selling via Real Time Bidding (RTB), a.k.a. the Open Exchange.

- DSP (Demand Side Platform): A programmatic tech platform used by media buyers that provides centralized and aggregated inventory from multiple sources including publishers, ad networks, and exchanges.

- SSP (Supply Side Platform): A tech platform used by publishers to programmatically sell inventory and optimize pricing, yield and audience reach for a pool of potential advertisers.

- ATD (Agency Trading Desk): Centralized management platform, specializing in programmatic media management, owned at the holding company level, and used by sister agencies to provide some/all of their programmatic media inventory.
