Greetings
I would like to begin by expressing my sincere gratitude to all those who participated in
the 1st NBC Tokyo International Screen Print Biennial exhibition, sponsored by NBC. The
exhibition attracted a large number of entries, both from Japan and overseas.
Established in 1934, NBC Inc. is based on its mesh technology. Today we enjoy
international acclaim for our pioneering products, including screen-printing mesh fabrics,
highly versatile functional filters produced using our high-value-adding technology such as
Nafi tec, and environmental conservation materials. As a leading company in the fi eld of
mesh fabrics for screen printing, we have continued to explore ways to both broaden the
use of and develop technologies for screen printing. As part of our ongoing efforts in this
direction, it is our great pleasure to hold this biennale exhibition, an internationally unique
exhibition inviting public participation solely in the fi eld of silk screen prints.
Looking over the submitted works, I noted with much interest that the styles employed in
the works tend to be quite distinct, according to the country of origin. The large number of
entries, together with the broad age range of the entrantsfrom those in their 20s to those in
their 70smade me realize anew just how popular and deep-rooted silk screen prints are.
Moreover, it was a very hard task for the judges to decide on how to single out certain works
from others since they were all such outstanding works of artan envious dilemma indeed.
On the other hand, as regards the Design divisionone of the two subject divisions, the other
being Artonly a handful of works actually met the evaluation criteria, which was a shame.
In our efforts to encourage greater creativity we may have gone too far in relaxing the
restrictions, which may have been too ambiguous and led to some confusion. Though small in
number, the individual prints were of a very high caliber, leading to equally tough decisions
needed by the judges in screening them.
This catalogue was published to provide a fl avor of the broad variety of prints submitted to
the exhibition. We trust you will enjoy perusing through it, and look forward to more entrants
for the 2nd NBC Tokyo International Screen Print Biennial, to be held in 2009.
In closing, allow me to express my heartfelt thanks to all those whose cooperation has
made this biennale exhibition possible.

Comments from the judges
The 1st NBC Tokyo International Screen Print Biennial exhibition attracted 237 artists/
works from 18 countries. Considering that entries were limited to screen prints, this number
represents quite a large response.
Some 100 years have passed since silk screen prints came to be called by their present
name, during which time their popularity took a global leap, in the 1960s, with the
emergence of American Pop Art.
The boom also hit Japan, and many artists tried their hand at screen printing in the 1960s
and 70s, before its popularity began to wane, possibly due to the technical diffi culty as a
means of expression. In recent years, the interpretation of stencil printing has been extended
to include digital printing, such as that using ink-jet technology. In the midst of this change, it
has become apparent that there have been forays by some print artists into new frontiers in
screen printing.
At present, the expressive potential of screen printing is quite broad, which is perhaps why
we felt something new could be created through the marriage of traditional craftsmanship
with the type of technology that is available today. It is against this backdrop that this
exhibition came into being, because we see it not only as an opportunity to improve and
develop the mode of expression of screen-printing, but also as an opportunity for cultural
exchange.
The judgment of all the submitted prints took place on October 16, with five judges
applying strict criteria in their decision-making. Selected through the screening were
wonderful works featuring exquisite modes of expression, rooted in the many cultures,
climates, and traditions that abound throughout the world. After several rounds of deliberation
the judges decided on the prize winners and winning pieces. We are truly grateful for all the
inspirational works received from around the world. And, it is thanks to such works that we
were able to hold this wonderful exhibition.
Finally, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude again to all the entrants. We will
continue to hold exhibitions like this to discover and convey the charm of screen prints, and
would greatly appreciate your continuing participation.

NBC was established in November 1934, to produce, in the Japanese domestic market, bolting cloths for milling.
For more than seventy years, NBC has contributed to the advancement of the industry by supplying printing plates for screen printing, filters for solids, liquids, and gases, as well as insect nets and other related products, with developments based on the mesh technology of bolting cloths.
The product range broadened as NBC developed high definition screen printing technologies for printed circuit board printing, which supports the electronics industry, as well as new technologies for automobiles, communications, home appliances, medical and applied scientific technology fields.
NBC's highly advanced mesh technology has been recognized worldwide, with NBC currently exporting products to around 50 nations, enlarging its scope of international activities.
