The Periodic Table

7

From very early times, chemists began to put the elements into

groups according to similarities in their physical and chemical

properties. The end result of these studies was

our modern periodic table.

History of Periodic table

The vertical columns of the periodic table are called GROUPS or FAMILIES.

The elements of the same group have similar chemical properties!

There are eight groups (i.e. I to VIII) with two sub-groups

A and B.

The group number indicates the

number of valence electrons, which

decide the chemical properties of the

elements.

10

The horizontal rows of the periodic table are called PERIODS or SERIESES.

There are seven periods (i.e. 1 to 7) along with Lanthanide series and

Actinide series.

The period number indicates the number of

shells around the nucleus, which decide

the size of atom an hence the physical properties of the

elements.

The elements of the same period have almost same physical properties!

Periodic LawPeriodic Law

When elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number,

there is a periodic pattern in their physical and chemical properties.
