Welcome to the newest improvement to the Sturgis Rally! Hallelujah! More service! More information! More FREE stuff! Yes, it’s true, and it’s very exciting. With the introduction of the Sturgis Rider® Daily our little gathering now becomes the only motorcycle and music festival that has its own daily newspaper. The Sturgis Rider® Daily is a full-color FREE newspaper that will be available start-ing at 6 a.m. every day of the rally at multiple locations that welcome biker business. The mission is to provide you, the Sturgis Rider, with news of the rally. It’ll be the news of riders and motorcycles, reporting on what happened yesterday and what’s happening today. You have in your hands the very first edi-tion of the Sturgis Rider® Daily. It’s historical, so feel free to keep a copy as a collector’s item. I wish I’d kept a copy 29 years ago when the first Surgis Rally publication, the Buffalo Chip Gazette, was published. A few years of growth later, half of that publication was dedicated to the Sturgis Rider News®. It’s now an exciting time where, thanks to the assistance of the folks at the Rapid City Journal and supportive advertisers who will appreciate your business, the Sturgis Rider News has evolved into a free daily newspaper.

Everyone associated with the Sturgis Rider® Daily is proud to serve the Biker Community, the finest people anywhere. We thank you for that privilege, the privilege to present you with current news and photos of events relevant to your Biker vacation. Woody & Crew

Next up is the earth-shaking thunder of the North American Hillclimbers Association (NAHA) the oldest of motorcycle sports and dear to the hearts of bikers. With a western outlook that tends toward rugged, un-groomed uphill courses, the Chip provides the perfect setting on Thursday and Friday for the battle of man and machine. You won’t be disappointed. On Friday, the hillclimbs overlap with day 1 of AMA sanctioned 4x4 action Extreme Dirt Track ATV races, which wind up on Saturday. This round at the Chip is a national race bringing ranked competitors from across the country to compete for the national championship’s $10,000 prize. This is no tea party, folks: it’s time to put the rubber to the road and the dirt! If this whets your appetite to be boots on the ground for authentic racing action, that’s entirely appropriate. Act on that impulse!

You’ll be glad you did. All events at the Buffalo Chip PowerSports Complex are open to the public and separately ticketed. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.BuffaloChip.com. Advance tickets are $15 each for TORC, ATV and Tractor Pull. Hillclimb is $20.

What’s on your schedule for Sturgis this year?We moved everything from the Full Throttle over to the Buffalo Chip. We’re racing off road and we’re selling guns. All kinds of stuff!

You’re making guns now?About three years ago I bought a gun for $600, took it apart and messed around with it. Then I posted a picture of it online and it went viral. So the light bulb went off: Maybe I should build guns!It feels like everything I was doing before was preparation for this – as a machinist and with metal finishing. It’s something I could never have done in California because of the regulations and permit-ting. But Texas is perfect for it.

So in your career you’ve gone from cars to bikes to guns: your canvas keeps getting smaller.Yeah, and I can fit more of them in my garage. (laughs) The machinery keeps getting bigger and bigger though. For guns you need big surface grinders and a giant gun-drilling lathe. It’s all relative.

What’s happening with West Coast Choppers? After shutting it down for four years I kind of soft re-launched the website about a year ago and everything instant-ly sold out. And I thought, What? People still want this s***? They’re not sick of it yet? Cause I am! So a couple months ago I re-launched a whole new site with a whole new line of parts.

So maybe it’s true that timing is every-thing.Yeah, maybe it is. You know, I got real famous and successful before the f ’ing Internet existed, thank god. I just barely missed it. I’m so lucky I made a name for myself before the mouth-breathers could use their keyboards to shoot me down.

What’s are you riding now? I got a new New Orleans PD Road King that I lowered and cut the windshield down. It’s my daily bike back and forth

to the shop. I can carry parts in the saddlebags. It’s like a truck.

Speaking of trucks, so you’re racing off-road these days?I’ve been racing in the desert for a decade, I’ve been a consistent top 5 fin-isher. But those are thousand mile races, you have to pace yourself cause they’re like 30 hours long. These TORC trucks are geared for cornering, it’s like a sprint race. You just kill each other, it’s awe-some. It’s so much fun and I’m excited about it.

Your wife is a racer, too, right? She drag races an NHRA funny car but it’s two different things. For drag racing you have to be like a surgeon, a super precision driver. She’s super fearless. With truck racing or anything off-road you just have to be a knucklehead like me.

You sound great!Yeah, I’m happier than ever.

Want to know what Jesse James’s opinion of big wheel baggers? Or how he thinks the gun making business is like the mo-torcycle industry? Watch for a follow up story in a subsequent issue of the Sturgis Rider Daily.

Every Sturgis Rally for the last 14 years, photographer Michael Lichter has collaborated with motorcycle builders and moto-artists to produce inspired, top-notch shows combining both visual art and motorcycles. Each show has focused on a particular way of celebrating the beauty and diversity of motorcycling and has been titled differently each time to reflect that element. Originally held at the Journey Museum in Rapid City, the shows found a home in 2009 at the Buffalo Chip’s Russ Brown Event Center under the banner Motorcycles As Art. “The Journey Museum was beautiful, a wonderful facility—people should visit there,” said Lichter. “But we outgrew that facility and it was off the beaten path for bikers.” Lichter wanted the show to be more accessible to more people, and determined it had to be in Sturgis. So when Woody approached me about coming to the Chip and made such a generous offer to build an entire 7,000 square foot gallery, I couldn’t refuse,” he said. And there are definite advantages. “Finally we had a place that was a permanent home, we could count on it, we knew what kind of lighting we had. It’s the perfect facility for a show like this.” This year’s theme, “Built for Speed—Race Inspired Motorcycles and Art,” focuses on the connections between motorcycle racing and custom bike design. The purity of purpose in the Cut-downs of the 1920s, bobbers of the ‘30s, café racers of the ‘50s, choppers of the ‘60s, and street trackers of the ‘70s has enduring appeal and customizers have reflected these styles. This exhibit spotlights both original race bike as well as customs inspired by them. Similar to last year Lichter curated the exhibit with Paul D’Orleans author of the Vintagent vintage motorcycle blog. “I brought Paul in for a second year because of his knowledge base when it comes to the history of motorcycling and racing,” said Lichter. Lichter and D’Orleans target racing genres such as Speedway, Flat Track, Drag Racing, Board Track, Grand Prix and Land Speed Record. Accompanying the 35 motorcycles are race-themed paintings, photography and prints by artists equally inspired by speed. Topping it off is the latest “21 Helmets” display from SeeSee Motor-Coffee in Portland. Custom builder include: Alan Stulberg, Arlen Ness, Atomic Trent Schara, Bill Dodge, Bill Rodencal, Brad Richards, Brandon Holstein, Brian Klock, Dan “Bacon” Carr, Dan

Rognsvoog, Jason Paul Michaels, John Reed, Kenji “Ken” Nagai (Japan), Kevin Baas, Kirk Taylor, Matt Olsen, Nate Jacobs, Pat Patterson, Paul Cox, Paul Wideman, Roland Sands, Skeeter Todd, Tator Gilmore, Warren Lane and Zach Ness. Factory-built machines include: a custom Street 750 from the Harley-Davidson design department, Indian’s “Spirit of Munro” streamliner and a Land Speed Racer from Confederate Motorcycles alongside Icon’s “Iron Lung” road racer, George Smith’s “Tramp” (replica) from S&S, Deus Ex Machina Buell Bully and Clem Johnson’s original Vincent “Barn Job” from John Stein. Artists include: Darren McKeag, David Uhl, Eric Hermann, Jeff Nobles, Michael Lichter, Paul d’Orleans, Richie Pan, Scott Jacobs, Scott Takes, Tom Fritz, Trish Horstman. Entry to the Buffalo Chip’s Russ Brown

Event Center and Michael Lichter Art Gallery is FREE and the display is open extended hours this year, from 2:00 to 10:00 PM Saturday through Friday. To find the gallery, head to the Buffalo Chip and turn left on Alkali Road to the EAST entrance. The gallery is next to the

EAST entrance and does not require a ticket or wristband to enter. Buffalo Chip campers may enter from inside the campground. Take a look at David Uhl’s second piece in the Steampunk Series: “The Huntress,” featuring Kristy Swanson. David admits to being lately enamored with ancient symbolism and occult influences and those elements certainly come to the forefront in this striking image. With actress Kristy Swanson’s connection to these themes, most notably in her role as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the synergy is apparent. With a horse-drawn hearse in the mist-filled dawn it’s the optimal time for a stake in the heart of the vampire, expertly administered by the gorgeous vampire slayer. Look closely and you’ll see that she’s protected by crucifixes and holy water. Adding to the substance, Copper Mike Cole’s beautifully detailed Sinister Kid is the perfect off-beat foil that pulls

the image together for motorcyclists. Said Kristy, “I’m so honored to be in one of David’s paintings. It’s like I can check that off my bucket list now!” There’s every likelihood “The Huntress” will sell out, just as the first piece in the series, “Steampunk Seduction,” did. That’s one reason you should be at the Legends Ride on Monday, August 4th when David’s donated, hand-embellished 24x32 print of “The Huntress” will be auctioned off. Of course, the Legends Ride is known as the premiere event of the Sturgis Rally; appearances by Kristy and David as the print is auctioned off in Deadwood on the steps of the Silverado Franklin is icing on the cake. Current owners of David’s first piece in the series, Steampunk Seduction, have first right of refusal on their matching

edition number for this second piece. Three sizes in limited numbers are being produced. Each print comes with a photo featuring both Kristy and David and autographed by both of them.

A beach in South Dakota? Don’t laugh! Instead, grab your Hawaiian Tropic and a beach towel and get over to Bikini Beach at the Buffalo Chip. Even if you’ve been there in years past, you have to see the Chip’s recently refurbished version of the Grand Strand. Heavy storms last winter necessitated some repairs so—just as you’d expect from the best party anywhere—the crew at the Chip didn’t simply make repairs, they freshened up the entire site making it better than ever. You’ll find decks over the water to dangle your feet, and sand to doze on as last night’s handover fades away. When you’re ready, there’s cold beer handy and live music on the Bikini Beach stage.

And if that’s not enough, Bikini Beach is the place to be for all-day rally fun. Not only will you find bikini-clad beauties, but it’s also where Jose Craigo a.k.a. Karaoke Craig holds court every day from 1:30 to 7:00 PM hosting Karaoke and a zany array of contests and challenges for a rip-roaring good time. Guys can enter the best burp, beer belly or man boobs contest. For ladies there’s a homemade bikini contest. Witness side-splitting rope-swing antics and rock out to air guitarists. Sign up on site to enter. So come take a break on the deck or wiggle your toes in the sand. Cold beer, live music and hot times await in the adults-only sandbox at Bikini Beach. Most people don’t get to Sturgis until the first weekend or even mid-week, but those who arrived ahead got a treat this year. On Friday, August 1 the Buffalo Chip started early with a pre-rally party called Friday Fest to get the Rally rockin’ in a big way. Counting off as day one of nine consecutive days of concerts at the Chip, Friday Fest started at 3 p.m., and didn’t quit till midnight. Six

amped-up bands, sexy dance troupes and free tailgate beer made for the perfect party ingredients. Taking their marks on the legendary Wolfman Jack Stage were Loverboy, The Mods, MMS, The Living Deads, The Charlie Brechtel Band and Iron Cowgirl Missy. Also performing were the super hot Illumination Fire Troupe and the Buffalo Chip’s own

Sturgis Rider® Rhythm Rockers. For over 30 years arena rockers Loverboy have been blowing out their big rock sound at high-energy live shows around the world. Last night they found out there’s no bash better than the Best Party Anywhere™! Friday Fest at the Chip served up enough

rock, blues, rockabilly, sass and suds to quench any musical appetite…and it was only the first night of the biggest music and motorcycle festival in the world! Reserve your passes now for concerts happening every night at the Buffalo Chip during rally, from classic bands like ZZ Top, Mötley Crüe and Lynyrd Skynyrd

to the Zac Brown Band, Train, Cheap Trick, The Cult and so many more. If Friday Fest went off without you this year, plan ahead to arrive early next year. You won’t want to miss a minute of the 75th Anniversary year!

Grilled cheese: it’s one of America’s iconic comfort foods, the sort of thing that can take a person back to childhood in a heartbeat. And here in Sturgis for the first time is the Grilled Cheese Truck (GCT), a Southern California staple among gourmet food trucks. In fact, you’ll find two of them during the rally, one at the Buffalo Chip CrossRoads and one in downtown Sturgis at the Knuckle Saloon. You can’t miss them, they’re very distinctive. Begun in Los Angeles in 2009, the GCT was quickly and warmly embraced locally, so company owners decided to expand. But not simply for commercial purposes. They chose to reach out to a community that was ripe for entrepreneurship: U.S. military veterans retuning to civilian life from Iraq, Afghanistan and other military service. The company has committed to making the first 100 franchise opportunities available to vets before taking it to the public at large. “We believe the skill set developed by military training lends itself well to running this kind of business. Leadership under pressure, unconventional approach to the work day, a mission specific outlook,” said Interim CEO and Chairman Robbie Lee. “Engaging quickly with a career or project is what vets need to transition quickly. It’s not charity, it’s respectfully offering a hand up.” The buy in for a GCT franchise is quite

reasonable at under $100,000 – especially compared to big name fast food franchises, which can be 10 or even 20 times higher. And because the GCT has built its foundation on solid value and superior service, it’s important that GCT franchisees are a good fit. Candidates are thoroughly vetted to ensure success. If the company finds a veteran with passion and discipline who qualifies but is short on the initial buy in, they’ll even offer financing, as the company’s desire is to see good people succeed. In a fortuitous turn, the GCT’s effort to recruit veteran owners came to the attention of General Wesley Clark. “He heard about what we were doing and wanted to get involved,” said Lee. It’s been a great connection, too, not only due to the General’s high profile but thanks to General Clark’s son, Wes, Jr., as well. As a military veteran, Wes is also on board to assist the endeavor. So is Olympic Skier Bode Miller who was motivated by the possibility of seeing veterans prosper. “It’s a cool American kind of thing to do,” he said. GCTs have been popular at NASCAR races, concerts and dozens of other venues and now they’re here at the Sturgis Rally. As a longtime motorcycle rider himself, Lee thinks it’s a natural fit. “We’re encouraging everyone to give them (vets) a chance,” he said. “We really are that American entrepreneurial story.”

The Silverado Franklin Hotel and Casino in Deadwood will give away a Custom 2014 Indian Motorcycle to one lucky person on August 9th at 10:00 PM. Will it be you? It might be but first you have to win the key that starts the bike. Key winners are drawn from entries beginning July 27 and running through August 9. You must be present to win a key. www.silveradofranklin.com. Visit the Indian Motorcycles display at the CrossRoads to sign up for a chance to win a 2015 Indian. The display is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM from Saturday, August 2 through Saturday, August 9. You don’t win an actual motorcycle in this next contest, but you do win the use of one. Eaglerider is giving away five super tour packages at the Buffalo Chip CrossRoads and one of the packages is a 7-day rental for next year’s 75th Anniversary Rally. One winner is chosen each day, August 3 through 7 on the Chip’s main stage. Winner must be present. Enter each day to be eligible for that evening’s drawing. Entry is free and access to the CrossRoads is free, too, so what are you waiting for? This prize actually has four wheels, but it’s a pretty sure thing the winner won’t mind. If off-road truck racing sounds cool, and it is, winning a Chevy truck is better still. Jay Cali loves his 2013 Harley Davidson Road Glide motorcycle, which is why he made the ride all the way from Pennsylvania to attend the Sturgis motorcycle rally, particularly the Harley-Davidson Road Glide reveal. “I bought it in 2013, and I rode it all the way out here,” Cali said Friday after snapping pictures of the new and improved Road Glide and Road Glide Special. “This new one is going to be something worthwhile.” As part of Project RUSHMORE, Harley-Davidson revealed 15 motorcycles Friday afternoon in Deadwood at Tin Lizzie Casino, weeks before the official announcement of the entire 2015 model lineup. Crowds gathered around the especially popular Road Glide models with shark-nose fronts to see the improved brakes, infotainment system, GPS navigation and gauges. The project has been in the works for about three years now, and motorcycle project planning manager Mike Goche has been with it from the start. Goche said it’s been about three years since a

Harley reveal has taken place in Sturgis during the rally and the anticipation was clear Friday. “Everyone’s been waiting so long — a year since

Road Glides have been off the market — and it just made sense to reveal it here,” he said. Project RUSHMORE is relying on customer comments and feedback to amp up all of the models in the entire touring lineup, Goche said, and so far, the results are impressive. Improvements of the bikes included a complete overhaul for enhancements that “touched everything,” Goche said, including suspension, cruise control, design and feel. To reveal the bikes, Geoff Stults, known for his acting roles in “Wedding Crashers” and “7th Heaven,” and singer Kat Perkins, who hadn’t even

seen the bikes until Friday, were in town. “The bike is just gorgeous,” said Stults, who admits to now wanting a model. “The Harley culture is so amazing and to hear stories from all the people here was so great.” The day also included a parade ride from Deadwood to Sturgis, and today people will have the chance to ride the newly revealed models to provide even more feedback on the improvements. “People love this bike,” said Harley-Davidson spokesperson Mike Roach. “The lines are killer. It’s better than ever and it’s going to turn some heads.”

Riding Time: Two and one-half hoursTotal Distance = 100 milesBegins and ends at Buffalo Chip

Highlights: Three canyons, three waterfalls and 600 curves

Skill Level: Moderate to Challenging

The Northern Hills Ride is locally known as the "Canyon Ride" as it takes you through Boulder Canyon, Spearfish and Vanocker Canyons on a 2 1/2 hour, 100 mile loop which begins and ends at the Buffalo Chip Campground. According to veteran riders, this may well be one of the most picturesque rides in the country. Head west out of the Buffalo Chip, through Sturgis on Lazelle Street, which turns into Hwy 14 at the east edge of town. This first stretch will take you into Boulder Canyon. After 12 miles, take a sharp right on Hwy 85 north for the seven mile ride to I-90 West. Be aware of possible traffic congestion in this area as it is a popular route to Deadwood. This short leg on Hwy 85 will take you by The Lodge at Deadwood, as well as Tatanka, a sculptured rendition of an Indian buffalo hunt owned by Kevin Costner. Turn on I-90 West towards Spearfish. In a couple of miles you will see a sign that warns vehicles of low flying aircraft. To the right is Ice Field, a small airport named after the Black Hills aviation pioneer Clyde Ice. As the runway runs perpendicular to the interstate, be alert for planes taking off or landing in this area. You might find yourself ducking at the last minute as they fly by. In another few miles, you will take Exit 14. Cross over the interstate and turn right on Colorado Blvd. Follow the signs to Hwy 14A (Spearfish Canyon), a ride considered to be the most beautiful 19 miles in the country offering spectacular canyon walls and waterfalls on a route that feels like it was specially designed for motorcycle riders. This is a heavily traveled double yellow striped road the entire way. Bridal Veil Falls is seven miles down the canyon on the left. Nearly everyone stops in the parking area on the right to see Spearfish Creek's 60-foot plunge into the canyon. After the falls, you pass side roads to Calamity Gulch, Iron Creek Road and Eleventh Hour Gulch. Just beyond those is Savoy, where you will find the famous Latchstring Inn, Spearfish Falls and Roughlock Falls. Spearfish Falls is just behind Latchstring Inn and provides another beautiful scenic opportunity. At this point, you will be about an hour into the ride at 56-miles, a little over halfway through. In six more miles, you will reach the end of Hwy 14A at Cheyenne Crossing, a famous Cheyenne-to-Deadwood stagecoach stop. Cheyenne Crossing is a good stop and offers outdoor eating, excellent homemade pie and a beer garden during the Rally. After turning left onto Hwy 85 North at Cheyenne Crossing you will head towards Lead (pronounced

"Leed"), home of the famous Homestake Gold Mine. The first three miles of this nine-mile ride is all uphill with long straights and extremely sharp curves. It is advisable to keep your speed down here. A four-mile downhill slide starts at the Terry Peak Summit and continues with grades as steep as ten percent. Take Hwy 85N/385S into Lead's Main Street. Although Deadwood is the more famous South Dakota wild west town from the Gold Rush days, Lead is where the gold rushers found the mother lode. The Black Hills Mining Museum is on the three-block Main Street across from the Exxon station. At this point, you will leave Hwy 85 and turn right (south) on Hwy 385. This is an enjoyable eight-mile ride over Strawberry Hill bringing you down to "Boondock's" a motorcycle amusement park worth a stop. Across from Boondocks, turn east onto Nemo Road. This is a spectacular route into the town of Nemo. Be aware this road is narrow and has no shoulders as you cross through scenic meadows and forests. The curves are gentle and well marked. Just before entering Nemo, turn left onto Vanocker

Canyon, the last leg. The next 18 miles of this three-canyon stretch are pure riding pleasure. While the road is slightly patchy at the beginning, it eventually becomes wide and smooth. Five miles into the canyon you will come to a downhill plunge with a ten percent grade, which will continue for another five miles. Pay attention on the Vanocker Canyon road as it may be crowded and the downhill curves can catch you by surprise. The next mile is a steep incline, then downhill again for another three miles until you cross the railroad tracks and go under I-90 at Exit 32. Two miles ahead on Junction take a right on Hwy 34 and in three miles you're back at the Chip, in time for a look at the Motorcycles as Art exhibit before The Cult and Queensryche take the stage.

If you can't take in all the rides in the Black Hills, don't miss the Northern Hills Ride. The diversity of this route is what makes veteran riders refer to it as one of the best 100 miles of motorcycle riding in the country. Black Hills Motorcycle Rides by Paul Mitchell is a concise yet detailed guide written by a veteran rider and writer. http://www.blackhillsmotorcyclerides.com.
