CASE STUDY: SYNCHRONIZING BUSINESS ARCHITECTURE WORK- A LOOSELY COUPLED VIEWOrganizations have numerous process alignment, rule analysis and data synchronization projects underway. These projects may not be aligned under a common strategy that fully leverages a holistic view of the enterprise. In addition, governance realignment may not be reflected in these initiatives. While a strict top-down approach to this would be counterproductive, synchronization is desirable. This session discusses a loosely coupled approach to project synchronization and coordination that includes how to deal with project management offices.

CAN SIX SIGMA AND BUSINESS PROCESS MANAGEMENT COEXIST?Marvin Wurtzel, Principal Consultant, Marvin M. Wurtzel & Associates

This talk will provide an overview of BPM and Six Sigma to indicate where there are synergies between the various types of programs.

BPM builds the framework to create strategic alignment, measure business processes using metrics aligned to business goals, and identify performance gaps that have a major impact on the customer and on achieving desired business results.

Six Sigma can be used as the vehicle to implement significant quality improvement, stabilize the processes and close the gaps. Six Sigma can be used to remove waste from the process and provide higher quality resulting in improved customer satisfaction.

Together they can provide a process enabled and customer focused enterprise.

BPM TOOLS & TECHNOLOGY TRACK

EXECUTABLE BPMN: BPMN-2.0 ONTOLOGY-BASED ENGINEMohamed Keshk, Lead Ontologist, UML-OWL Gen, LLC

The emergence of XMI metamodel was a tipping point for BPMN-2.0. It offers a tremendous opportunity for building a native BPMN engine backed by formal and rich semantics of the metamodel. However, the complexity of the metamodel in terms of interconnected relationships among different BPMN elements and across different packages makes it hard for traditional technologies to handle such semantics. A BPMN ontology-based engine offers a great opportunity to handle the complexity of the metamodel in a native and formal way using W3C standards: OWL, SPARQL, and inference engine.

My presentation will unveil a complete working prototype to show business analysts how to turn their BP diagrams from documents into a run-time application that enables them to integrate, publish, query, and infer over their BP models. This will lead to lower costs and improved time-to-market.

BA PROFESSIONAL TRACK

BUILDING AND USING A BUSINESS CAPABILITY MODEL FOR BUSINESS ARCHITECTUREGreg Suddreth, Founding Board Member BusinessArchitectureInstitute.org

Building and using a Business Capability Model for Business Architecture. How does an organization build a business capability model and use it effectively in their organization as part of a business architecture framework.

INCREASING BUSINESS ANALYSIS MATURITY FOR RULES-DRIVEN BUSINESS PROCESS MANAGEMENTDavid Heidt, Managing Partner, Enterprise Agility

With organizations giving high priority to maturing their business analysts’ skills, it is necessary to reflect on the effectiveness of today’s business analysis best practices when adopting Rules-Driven Business Process Management. Understanding how the adoption of business rules and BPM impact the business analyst role is critical to achieving the reduce cost and increased business agility promised by rules and BPM vendors. The presenter will discuss the current challenges related to modeling tools and analysis techniques along with introducing a business analysis maturity model that is a useful roadmap for organizations adopting aspects of Rules-Driven BPM.

CASE STUDY: BPM ANTI-PATTERNSFeaturing: Robert Wald, Vice President, JPMorgan

Business Process Management is an increasingly popular paradigm for development. But some development patterns and contextual situations are not appropriate for BPM and are likely to lead to flawed or delayed implementations. In this talk Robert Wald of JPMorgan will discuss various situations where BPM was not the correct solution or was implemented in a less than ideal manner with an eye towards taking these lessons learned and heading off issues and design problems before they happen.

BUSINESS INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE: WHAT IS ITJim Rhyne, Principal Consultant, Software Renovation Consulting

Business information architecture is a consensus vocabulary of business terms and their relationships. It insures consistency and precision of terms used in scorecards, value chains, processes and rules. It also provides the common vocabulary of terms for alignment of business and IT. Contemporary vocabularies (e.g. SBVR, OWL) have their grounding in logic. This helps insure consistency and precision and is based on common sense, but need not be a heavyweight process nor require a PhD in mathematical logic. Real business examples are used to motivate the value of business information architecture and to provide an overview of the technical content.

OPENING KEYNOTE: THE HIDDEN FACTORY IN CHANGE MANAGEMENTTiran Dagan, Director, Strategic Initiatives & Analysis, NBC Universal

Change management gets a call-to-arms in a variety of situations: new technology, process improvement, reorg. Some change is organic and some has a top-down directive but no change initiative can ever survive the currents that lay just beneath the surface. These are the unofficial channels of communication that cross org-structure boundaries and the informal network where decisions are often based on emotions. Tiran will discuss simple techniques to manage this “hidden factory” and the unofficial socio-political web where more gets done than in the open and how to introduce objectivity into the conversation.

TRACK CHAIR KEYNOTE: CREATING A NEW PROCESS USING PROCESS DESIGN PRINCIPLESDaniel J. Madison, Author of Process Mapping, Process Improvement, & Process Management & Owner, Value Creation Partners

Process design principles are distilled best practices derived from world class organizations. These principles provide a guideline for process improvement efforts. By using design principles, new processes can be designed very quickly. In addition these new processes will exhibit higher quality, lower cost, faster cycle time, and less worker frustration.

STRATEGIC OPPORTUNITIES WITH BUSINESS ARCHITECTURE (BA) AND IT INTEGRATIONRalph Whittle, Co-Author of Enterprise Business Architecture: The Formal Link between Strategy and Results

This presentation describes the relationships between your Business Architecture (BA), IT architectures and Strategy. It illustrates how to build a BA with value streams or the core cross-functional processes from your BPM initiatives, and integrate with the IT Architectures and the Strategy. The BA is the next logical evolution in Business Process Modeling and IT architecture integration. The BA can create strategic opportunities with value chains for improving enterprise performance and building a competitive advantage.

WHAT IS SCOPE? (AND HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOU HAVE IT?)Art Moore, President, Clear Systems LLC

Across the total life cycle of a system project, how much process modeling is enough, when, and in what form? How do these process modeling activities and artifacts integrate with other perspectives of the project at each stage? This presentation provides guidance not on process modeling itself, but on the integration of process modeling with the other necessary project tasks and outputs, including business rules, throughout the life cycle. It provides a framework for effective project planning for business analysis, and demonstrates how process models themselves are improved by this effective integration and balance.

CASE STUDY AT ERNST & YOUNG: BETTER! FASTER! CHEAPER!Featuring: David Pedersen, Senior Decision Architect, Knowledge Partners International

This case study describes my experience with using BPM and BDM to automate complex regulations and enterprise policies across a large global enterprise.

After gathering requirements from across the globe, we selected a BPM vendor and hired their best consultants to ensure good results. However, life is not that easy. A portion of the application was implemented with a business rules front end, which worked very well, the rest had gaps. We lacked the ability to present complex rules in a format that the business and IT understood. We implemented BDM during a major upgrade. This resulted in a 10% to 25% reduction in development time, plus many other benefits.
