The2008-2009NewberryCollegewomen’sbasketballseasonisfastapproachingandthescarletandgrayaregettingsetforwhatshouldbeanelectrifyingseason.Thisyeartheteamwillbecompetingforits thirdSouthAtlanticConferenceTournament title in fouryearsandhope tomake their fourthNCAATournament appearance infiveyears.

LastseasonendedonasournoteasNewberrywasknockedoutof the SAC Tournament by the top seeded Tusculum Pioneers. ThisseasonNewberryhasbroughtinCoachSeanPagetotaketheteambacktothetopof theSAC.

NEW COACHES

PagecomestoNewberryfromBresciaUniversitywherehetookateamthatwent1-29inthe2005-06seasonto20-14inoneseason,thebiggest turnaround in collegebasketball that season.AtNew-berry,Pageplansoncontinuingtheprogram’ssuccessintheconfer-enceandwantstogivetheteamachancetocompetefortheNCAANationalChampionship.

NexttoPageonthesidelinesthisseasonwillbenewassistantcoachVernRobateau.Robateauhasawealthof coachingandplayingexpe-rienceallovertheglobe.Hehasworkedasanassistantcoachof theBrisbaneBulletsof Australia’sNBLandhasplayedprofessionallyincountriessuchasGermany,Belgium,MalaysiaandAustralia.

RETURNING GUARDS

Thisseason’srosterisfullof experiencedplayersreadytomakean-otherrunataSACchampionship.10playersarereturningtoNew-berry including seven seniors, fourof whichhaveNCAA tourna-mentexperience.

“Wewillhaveaverysolid team,a teamthat ispreparedandplayshard in every game,” saysPage. “We will be very good at the de-fensive endof the court andplanonbeingveryup tempoat theoffensiveend.”

In the backcourt, both of last seasons starters, Janine Ward (Tal-levast,Fla.)andLauraMarquardt(Mt.Pleasant,S.C.),willreturntoNewberry.Wardiscomingoff astellaryearinwhichsheledherteaminassistswith3.4pergame.Shealsorankedsecondontheteaminsteals(1.6pergame)andfreethrowpercentage(.813).LastseasonMarquardtputupsolidnumbersbyleadingherteaminfreethrowpercentage(.830)andrankedsecondinblockedshots(18).

The 2008-2009 season will also mark the return of Monica Alex-ander(Norcross,Ga.)whosatoutlastseason.Duringthe2006-07seasonAlexanderwasthirdintheSACinassistswith4.8pergame.Ontopof herpremierassistnumbers,Alexandershot37percentfrombeyondthearcandaveragedtwostealsagame.HerhardworkwasawardedthatseasonwhenshewasnamedtotheAllSACsecondteam.

“Thereturnof MonicaAlexanderisahugebenefittotheprogram,”Pagesays“ShehashadsuccesshereatNewberryCollegeandknowswhatittakestowinbiggamesandchampionships.”

KeenaPhillips(Milwaukee,Wis.)andMashandaThomas(Richmond,Va.)willalsobereturningtoprovidedepthattheguardposition.

RETURNING FORWARDS/CENTERS

At the forward position, Newberry fans can be excited about thereturnof sophomoreLeanneWatson(StoneMountain,Ga.).Inherfirst season,Watson came off the bench and quickly emerged asoneof Newberry’sbestplayers.Watsonrankedthirdonherteaminpointspergame(7.2),reboundspergame(3.9),andblockedshots(5).HersolidperformanceallseasonlandedheraspotontheSACall-Freshman team. Expectations are already riding high when itcomestoWatson’sdevelopmentasaplayerandaleader.

“LeanneWatsonwillneedtobealeaderonandoff thebasketballcourt,”statedPage.“Shehastremendousphysicalabilityandiswork-ingveryhardtoimproveheroverallgame.Ibelieveshewillhaveabigyearandcouldbeoneof thetopplayersintheconference.”

This season Newberry fans will also see the return of CortneySnowden (Augusta, Ga.). Snowden, who hasn’t played since the2005-06season,wasanimportantplayeronthe2006SACchampi-onshipteam.Sherankedthirdontheteaminreboundswith5.3pergameandalsoshottheballefficientlywitha.447fieldgoalpercent-age.Alsoreturningattheforward/centerpositionareAnitaBulcher(Russia,Ohio),BrianaJohnson(Irmo,S.C.),andSadeCoates(Merid-ian,Miss.).

NEWCOMERS

The scarlet and gray will also be joined by four new recruits thatareready toput theirmarkonNewberrywomen’sbasketball.TherecruitingclassincludesfreshmanOndiaKelley(VillaRica,Ga.)whocomestoNewberryfromVillaRicaHSwhereshewasnamedMVPandDefensivePlayerof theYearinherseniorseason.

AlsonewtoNewberryisKeishaHenderson(Columbia,S.C.)whowillbeginhercollegeplayingcareer.WhileattendingBlythewoodHSshewasatwotimeBasketballCoachesAssociationAll-Statehonoreeandaveragedfourstealsagameherfinalyear.

Thethirdfreshmanonthisyear’srosterisAmyBrowne(Marooch-ydore,Queensland,Australia) fromCaloundraSt.HS inAustralia.Brownewasafour-timeAll-Stateselectionandwasamemberof theAll-AustralianHighSchoolteamthatwentundefeatedduringatourof theUnitedStatesin2007.

Page’s only transfer student this season is Helen McKinney (Ow-ensboro,Ky.),asophomorefromBresciaUniversity.Asafreshman,McKinneywasakeyplayeronateamthatwonitsconference and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament. During the 07-08

season, she averaged 1�.� points and six rebounds a game.

“TransferHelenMcKinneyandfreshmanAmyBrownebringinstantscoringtoourbackcourt,whileforwardOndiaKelleyaddsdepthtoour frontcourt,”Page said. “KeishaHenderson is a talentedpointguardthatwillgainvaluableexperiencefromthepresenceof MonicaAlexander.”

2008-2009 SCHEDULE

The2008-2009scheduleisabalancedoneandCoachPageiscon-fidenthisteamcangetthejobdonethroughouttheregularseason.Theschedulefeatures11gamesathomeand16gamesontheroad.TheseasonwillstartonNovember15attheCarolinaFirstMarsHillClassicwheretheywillfaceoff againstChowanUniversityandVir-giniaIntermont.WithtwoSACTournamentchampionshipsinthreeyearsundertheirbelt,Newberryfanshavecometoexpectsuccessoutof thisprogram.CoachPagebelievesthisteamisreadyforthechallengesinfrontof themandhopestobringhomeanotherSACTournamenttitletoNewberryCollege.

AcademyatWestPoint;aMasterof ArtsdegreeinmilitaryhistoryfromtheSchoolforAdvancedMilitaryStudiesatLeavenworth,Kansas;andMasterof ScienceandPh.D.degreesinsocialpsychologyandorganizationalbehaviorfromtheUniversityof Washington.Heisalsoagraduateof theNationalDefenseUniversitywherehewasapost-doctoralresearchfellowinnationalsecurityaffairs.

Dr.ZaishasbeenappointedbyGovernorMarkSanfordtorepresentthestate’s20privatecollegesanduniversitiesontheSouthCarolinaCommissiononHigherEducation.Healsoservesasamemberof theGovernor’sCouncilforEducationalReformof secondaryeducationinSouthCarolina.Heisamemberof theNewberryOperaHouseFoundation,theGreaterColumbiaChamberof Commerce,theLutheranEducationConferenceof NorthAmerica,andtheSoutheasternRegionof ThriventFinancialforLutherans.IntheSouthAtlantic(athletic)Conference,heservesasChairmanof thePresidents’Council.Healsorepresentstheprivatecollegeanduniversitypresidentsof thesoutheasternUnitedStatesontheBoardof Directorsof thenationalFoundationforIndependentHigherEducation.Dr.ZaisalsoservesasChairmanof theLieutenantGovernor’sadvisorycouncilonaging.Dr.Zaishaswrittenandpublishedextensivelyinthefieldsof organizationalbehavior,curriculumdesign,stress,militaryhistoryanddoctrine,and

leadershipandmanagement,insuchprofessionaljournalsastheJournal of Applied Psychology, Armed Forces Journal International, Military Review,Parameters, etc.Hisopinion-editorialpieces,writtenwhilePresidentof NewberryCollege,haveappearedinnewspapersacrossthestate.BeforebecomingNewberryCollege’s20thpresident,Dr.Zaisservedhiscountryforover30yearsasanofficerintheUnitedStatesArmy,attaining

therankof brigadiergeneral.AsanassistantprofessoratWestPoint,hetaughtmanagementconsulting,organizationalbehavior,andleadership.AparatrooperandRanger,Dr.Zaisservedinawidevarietyof infantryunits,inVietnam,theUnitedStates,andKorea.Hecommandedtworiflecompanies,aninfantry

battalion,alightinfantrybrigade,andservedasdeputycommandinggeneralatFortRiley,Kansas.Hisexperienceisinmilitaryplansandoperations,havingworkedaschief of operations,plans,andtrainingforaninfantrybattalion;warplansofficerforacorps;andChief of WarPlansfortheChairman,JointChiefsof Staff.

Dr.ZaiswasaWhiteHouseaideandservedinPanamaasexecutiveassistanttothefour-starcommanderof allU.S.forcesinCentralandSouthAmerica.InKuwait,hewascommandinggeneralof U.S.andAlliedforces.Healsoservedascommandinggeneralof OperationProvideRefuge,thetaskforcethatcaredforthe4,000KosovorefugeeswhoenteredtheUnitedStates.PriortocomingtoNewberryCollege,ZaiswastheChief of Staff of theU.S.ArmyReserveCommand,theheadquartersthatadministersmorethan200,000militarymembersof theArmyReserve.

Dr.Zais’smilitaryawardsanddecorationsincludetheDistinguishedServiceMedal,theDefenseSuperiorServiceMedal,theLegionof Merit,theBronzeStar,theMeritoriousServiceMedal,theAirMedal,theRepublicof VietnamCampaignMedal,theHumanitarianServiceMedal,theRanger,Airborne,andCombatInfantryman’sBadges,andtheSouthCarolinaMeritoriousServiceMedal.

Hiswife,theformerSusanFincher,isfromColumbiaandagraduateof theUniversityof SouthCarolina.Susan’sgreat-great-great-grandfatherwasafoundingmemberof theNewberryCollegeBoardof Trustees.Theyhavetwochildren:BradleyisaninfantrysoldierinIraq;Ashley,isaninterncoordinatorforpresidentialhopefulJohnMcCain.

Andy Carter Vice President for Intercollegiate AthleticsAndyCarterisenteringhisseventhyearastheNewberryCollegeDirectorof Athletics,havingjoinedtheNewberryfamilyinSeptemberof 2002.

Sincetakingthehelm,CarterhasspearheadedseveralprojectsinordertoturnNewberryAthleticsintooneof thepremierprogramsinDivisionII.CartercametoNewberryafter17-yeartenureatMissouriBaptistUniversity.UponreceivinghisundergraduatedegreefromtheNAIAinstitution,

hebeganhiscareerasanadmissionsrecruiterandassistantbaseballcoachwhileworkingonhismaster’sof businessadministrationatLindenwoodUniversity.HisdegreecompletionledhimtoafacultypositionasanInstructorof BusinessAdministrationandEconomicsatMissouriBaptist,whileatthesametimeservingtheschoolasheadbaseballcoach.

Cartertookoverasbaseballcoachin1991andduringhisnineseasonsatthehelmwonsevenconsecutiveconferencechampionships.Sevenyearsintoasuccessfulcoachingcareer,healsotookoverasMissouriBaptist’sathleticdirector.Heservedinbothrolesfortwoyearsbeforeleavingcoachinginordertodevoteallhisattentiontoadministrativeduties.

AlmostimmediatelyuponhisarrivalatNewberry,CarterpresentedtheBoardof Trusteeswiththe“NewberryCollegeAthleticInitiative”,along-termplantosecurefutureathleticsuccess,whilemaintainingNewberry’sexcellentacademicrecordforitsathleticsteams.Newberryhasundergoneanoverhaulof itsathleticprogram,institutingastringentevaluationprocessforallvarsitysports.

Theresultswerealmostimmediate,astheathleticprogramnearlydoubledSouthAtlanticConferencevictoriesinconsecutiveyearsunderCarter’sreign.Also,forthefirsttimesince1999,Newberryenhanceditsofferingof varsitysports,addingwrestlingandcompetitivecheerleading.

Academicachievementandstudentdevelopmentarethecornerstonesof thedepartment.Agrowingstudent-athletepopulation(222in2002-03upto500in2007-08)havesetthestandardintheSouthAtlanticConference(SAC)bywinningfourof thepastfiveGPAtitlesandhaveachievedacumulativeGPAashighas3.01(2007-2008).TheCollege’scommitment,asevidencedbytheimplementationof ourMentoringSkillsprogram,istomaintainthissuccessforthefuture.

Thestudent-athleteexperiencedirectlycorrelatestotherelationshiptheyhavewiththeirheadcoach.Annualevaluationsandemphasisondesiredresultsproducedbytheheadcoachesinthedepartmentaidedinstaff hiringandthedevelopmentprocess.Thesuccessinhiringanddevelopingalldepartmentalstaff (Coaches,administration,andstaff)isdirectlycorrelatedtothecommitmentshownbytheCollege.

Thetenureof ourheadcoaches,eachprogram’swin-lossrecords,andthequalityof eachincomingrecruitingclassprovideawindowof thevariedlevelsof successthatwillcontinueblessingtheCollegeforyearstocome.Facilityenhancementhasalsobeenamajorfocalpointforthisadministration.Inthesummerof 2006anewAstroTurf footballfieldwasinstalled.Thisprovidedastateof

theartfieldforpracticeandcompetition.Theteamrespondedbywinningall9gamesplayedatSetzlerField,includingourfirsteverNCAADIIpost-seasonvictory.Throughthefall2007season,Newberryfootballhasproduceda15-0homerecordonthenewturf.The2007-2008academicyearbroughtthePhaseIcompletionof thefirstof threenewfacilitiesattheSmithRoadAthleticComplexwiththecompletionof theBaseball

facility.ThisfacilitywillbetheproudhomeforNewberrybaseballforyearstocomeandwillprovideagreatopportunitytoengageourcommunity.TheotherfacilitiesslatedfortheSmithRoadComplexarenewSoftballandSoccerfacilities.Also,theNewberrybasketballandvolleyballteamsbeganplayinglastseasononanewfinishedgymfloor,poweredbyabrandnew,state-of-theartlightingsystem.

Futureplansincludenewfacilitiesforthemen’sandwomen’stennisteams,apracticefacilityfortheWrestlingprogram,anddeterminingthebestcourseof actiontogivethefootballfacilitiesatSeltzerFielditsfirstfaceliftinalmost20years.Successonthefields,courts,andfairwayshascomeastheresultof greatprocesses.Ourcoacheshavetaughttheirstudent-athletesthatwemustwineveryday;intheclass-

roomandonthefields,courts,andfairways.Duringthe2002-03yearwewon19%of SACcompetitions.Theprogresshasbeensteadyandreached53%in2006-2007.Thismarkedthefirsttimethedepartmentevereclipsedthe50%winningpercentagesincebecomingaDIISACmember.OthercompetitivesuccesseshavecomeintheAll-Sportscompetition.In2002-03,wescored21pointsacrossthe14representativesportprograms.ThisplacedNewberylastintheSACstandings,aplacetheyhavefinishedeachyear.Onceagain,therisehasbeensteadyaswescoredsuccessivelymorepointseachyearleadinguptothe2006-07yearwhenwescored76pointsandfinishedthirdinthestandings,only6pointsoutof firstplace.Whatawonderfultestamenttothesupportof theCollegeAdministrationandthehardworkof thestaff andstudent-athletes.

AstheVicePresidentforIntercollegiateAthletics,heservesontheNewberryPresident’sCabinet,underDr.MitchellZais.Healsoismemberof theNationalAssociationof CollegiateDirectorsof AthleticsandservesasaBoardMemberfortheD2AthleticsDirector’sAssociation.

Carterismarriedtohiswifeof 23years,Rena.Theyhavesevenchildren:Aaron(20),aseniorcadetatUSMA-WestPoint,Becca(19),Beth(16),Jake(14),Rachel(12),Caleb(10),andMicah(8).

Page comes to Newberry after two seasons atBresciaUniversityinOwensboro,Ky.Inhistwoyearsatthehelm,theBearcatswent38-27.

Prior to Page’s leadership, Brescia had won 11gamesintheprevioustwoseasonsandwas1-29inthe2005-2006regularseason(3-30overall).

Inhis initialseasonatBrescia,Pagewasnamedthe NAIA Division I Women’s IndependentCoach of the Year after leading the team to a20-14recordandaberthintheNAIANationalTournament.TheBearcatsupsettop-seededLeeUniversityintheopeningroundtoadvancetotheSweetSixteen.ThewinwasthefirstwinbyaNo.8seedoveratopseedinNAIATournamenthis-tory.

In2007-08,theBearcatsrecordedarecordof 18-13,onceagainadvancingtotheNAIANationalTournament.

Prior tohis employment atBrescia,Page spentfiveyearsasanAssistantCoachattheNCAADi-visionIlevel.

Page’s coaching experience in Australia also in-cluded a stint with Basketball Queensland asa RegionalDevelopmentOfficer and as an In-tensive Training Center Program (ITCP) HeadCoach.Aspartof thefirstITCPinQueensland,heworkedwithelite athletes andcoaches fromtheSunshineCoastandvariousotherregionsinSoutheastQueensland.AstheRegionalDevelop-mentOfficer,Pagewasresponsibleforthemar-keting,promotionandgrowthof thesportintheSunshineCoastregion.

Newberry College has an annual budget of over $16,500,000. Th e College employs about 225 people—165 salaried and 60 hourly.

Th e monthly payroll exceeds $600,000 and monthly purchases and contracts average $700,000.Over 900 students and 225 employees make purchases in the community every day.Th e College sponsors around 60 cultural events each year—concerts, plays, art exhibits, lectures.Th e College hosts around 175 sporting events per year with their 15 NCAA Division II teams—8 men, 7 women.A number of off -campus groups use college facilities for special events. For example, the SC Lutheran Synod Assembly and the SC Lutheran Youth Convention each bring over 400 people into the community. We also host the South Carolina Women of the ELCA, a state-wide ROTC camp, the South Carolina Middle and Senior High Jazz Band Competition, the South Carolina Middle and High School Science Olympiads, the South Carolina Guidance Counselor Conference, several athletic camps, and many more.

Special events such as Homecoming, graduations in May and December, Convocations, and accreditation visits in multiple programs bring thousands of visitors to Newberry.

A study conducted by the Newberry Chamber of Commerce in 1998 concluded the College has the following economic impact on the city. With major growth in enrollment and accounting for infl ation, these numbers would be signifi cantly higher today.
