RDP house turned into a spaza shop

The more than 100-year-old dispute as to who should le-gally rule over the Kurhule-ni community is seemingly still brewing, and the Masia Traditional Council has now asked the Limpopo Provincial Government to provide some answers as to the legality of the Kurhuleni Community Authority.

“The Kurhuleni Community Authority has never legally ex-isted and still does not legally exist. The whole thing is a matter of lies, cover-ups, disinformation and maladministration,” says Thovhele Nthumeni Masia in a letter addressed to the provincial government. Thovhele Masia also accuses certain government departments of recognising an illegal structure and allowing them to collect taxes in an un-lawful manner.

The dispute between the Ma-sia Royal Council and the com-munity staying at Kurhuleni dates back many decades. It reached a boiling point at the end of last year when residents protested against the installation of a new headman in the area. The Kurhuleni structure even managed to get a temporary court interdict to stop the proposed installation of the new headman.

During the public unrest in December last year, the police were called in to restore the peace and some residents were injured when rubber bullets were fired. A spokesperson for the Kurhuleni community, Mr Owen Makhubele, then described the action of Thovhele Masia to appoint a new chief as a clear sign of tribal cleansing. He said it increased tension between the Tsonga and Venda people. “Masia has already illegally occupied land belonging to the Tsonga, and he is widely per-ceived to harbour hatred of the Tsonga,” Makhubele stated in a press release.

The two parties apparently came to an agreement in Feb-ruary this year regarding the appointment of a headman, but the tension has not subsided. A petty headman was subsequently installed.

A 100-year-old dispute

The piece of land that is under dispute, the farm Ongedacht, LT52, has a very interesting, albeit somewhat controversial, history. It dates back to 1906 when the Swiss Mission bought the farm from a certain Rob-ert Hamilton. In 1985 there was an agreement that the farm would become part of the then Gazankulu government, but this seemingly did not materialize. The farm was sold to the South African government in 1994.

The Swiss Mission farms, as they were commonly known, were run by (what was later called) the Evangelical Presby-terian Church. The missionaries allowed people from the area to settle on these farms and taught them various skills. They also built schools and clinics and took care of the administrative functions in the community.

The Mission Farms did not fall under the tribal authorities in the various areas, and throughout the decades they also served as “tax collectors” for the government of the day.

The Mission Farms came un-der a lot of pressure from various governments and at first were criticised for allowing black peo-ple to settle on “white” land. The missionaries were also criticised for not recognising and allowing African rituals such as initiation ceremonies to be practiced on the land.

In an interview with the SABC earlier this year, the Kurhule-ni Community Association’s spokesperson, Owen Makhubele, denied that they had ever been under the authority of a tra-ditional council. “The church started having control of this area since 1903 and 1905. When they established a church, they also built a school and a clinic in order to render these services to the community. It was sold back to the central government by the church in 1993 and the title deed is still under the Republic of South Africa. It has never under been chief Masia or whoever,” said Makhubele.

This statement is vehemently denied by Thovhele Masia and he points out that community authorities were established in terms of the Black Authorities Act of 1951. This act has since been repealed and is no longer applicable.

As far as the farm Ongedacht (Kurhuleni) is concerned, Masia says that the area was subdivided into farms by the colonialists in the 1900s. “The Masia Great Place was cut into four parts,” Thovhele Masia explains. “The ancestral worship shrine, royal graveyard, royal ploughing fields and the Morogolo River fell under the farm Ongedacht, now commonly known as Kurhuleni Mission,” he says.

According to him, the Union of South Africa recognised the Masia traditional leadership in the early 1930s as having tradi-tional jurisdiction over a number of farms, including Ongedacht.

On 24 August 1955, the gov-ernment of the day arranged for a meeting where the various head-men and other dignitaries from the specific area were present. The 322 representatives pres-ent unanimously elected Chief Thomas Masia to be their leader and representative. The represen-tatives included members of the Kurhuleni Mission.

In a proclamation published in the Government Gazette on 24 September 1982 (Proclama-tion 187), the farm Ongedacht is listed as one of those that will become part of the Republic of Venda. “Serious attempts were made by interested parties to have proclamation 187 rescinded in order to pave the way for the proclamation of Kurhuleni as a community authority,” says Thovhele Masia.

In 1985 attempts were made to incorporate the farm under the then Gazankulu government, but this seemingly came to nothing. The farm was sold to the South African government in October 1993 for the sum of R482 700.

“When the new democratic government was born on 27 April 1994 and took over the admin-istration of the homeland, the Kurhuleni baggage was sneaked in through the back door as if it was a proclaimed establishment like other community authori-ties,” Masia says.

Throughout the years nu-merous attempts were made to resolve the dispute and various groups and committees tried to establish a legitimate Kurhule-ni Community Authority. Ac-cording to Thovhele Masia, the first of such attempts was in July 1998 when elections for a Kurhuleni authority were held. The traditional leaders at that stage objected to the fact that the Limpopo Government apparently paid stipends to the newly elected office bearers.

In April 2002, a Limpopo delegation addressed a well-at-tended meeting in Kurhuleni and confirmed that re-elections could not take place because Kurhu-leni had not been proclaimed as a community authority. The meeting then elected a task team to work towards the establish-ment of a Kurhuleni Community Authority.

The committee tabled a report a short while later, but it seems as if the 1982 proclamation as well as the 1993 expropriation were viewed as serious stum-bling blocks that prohibited the formation of such a community authority.

In 2005 the Limpopo Premier instructed the Masia traditional authority to establish a traditional governance structure in the area, which includes the farm Onge-dacht. The Masia Traditional Au-thority was also asked to appoint a person to man the Kurhuleni sub-office. Thovhele Masia al-leges that the lady who manned the office was later intimidated by “faceless individuals” and, out of fear for her life, vacated the office.

A clear sign of tribal cleansing - Kurhuleni

Thovhele Masia regards the actions of the Kurhuleni com-munity authority as counter-pro-ductive and says it divides peo-ple. “It is creating conflict in a community that has always been peaceful and whose members are interrelated,” he says.

His view is seemingly not shared by the Kurhuleni Com-munity Authority Council, and in a press release issued earlier this year, they accuse Thovhele Masia of illegally occupying the land. “The action of Masia is a clear sign of tribal cleansing that has been emerging among some of the Venda leaders against the Tsonga people,” the statement reads. When approached for comment last week, the Kurhu-leni Council did not want to com-ment on the issue and said such matters should not be discussed in the media. They are waiting for the matter to appear before court once more and will only make a statement after obtaining legal advice.

While millions of South Afri-cans battle to find a place that they can call their own home, some seem to take RDP houses for granted and even let them out to foreigners to be used as spaza shops. This practice caused a lot of unhappiness in Mashau Village where a local resident apparently rent out his government-subsi-dized dwelling to an Ethiopian trader.

Several residents from Mashau village voiced their dissatisfaction this week with the conduct of Mr Vhangani Mudumela, who allegedly ben-efits from the arrangement with the Ethiopian businessman. The controversial house, which was turned into a spaza shop, was built around 2009. Mudumela used to stay in the house.

The Democratic Alliance’s

representative in Ward 9, Jonas Mugovhani, said it was simply wrong to turn an RDP house into a spaza shop while there were 13 family members shar-ing one hut in the same area. “There are a lot of villagers staying in dilapidated huts and who are supposed to benefit from RDP houses. It will be better if the MEC for Cooper-ative Governance, Human Set-tlement and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) can come and witness the abuse of RDP houses by the people,” said Mugovhani.

The spokesperson for the Makhado Municipality, Louis Bobodi, said they were not aware of the situation. He prom-ised to send officers to investi-gate and said that the munici-pality would act after receiving such a report.

“There are a lot of people

who deserve to get an RDP house, but they are still waiting. It is illegal to turn an RDP house into a spaza shop while there are a lot of citizens who don’t have a place they can call ‘home’,” he said.

“Access to housing and se-cure accommodation is an in-tegral part of government’s commitment to reduce poverty and improve the quality of peo-ple’s lives. The RDP endorses the principle that all South Africans have a right to a secure place in which to live in peace and dignity. Housing is a basic human right. One of the RDP’s first priorities is to provide for the homeless,” said Bobodi.

All attempts to find the owner of the RDP house, Mudumela, were fruitless and the Ethiopian businessman also remained tight-lipped.

Khosi Vho-Pfuluwani Vhambelani thavha Maa-no Netsianda (35) was fi nally installed as new chief of the Tsianda community at Gwamasenga High School on Saturday.

The community of Tsianda had been without a chief since 2013, following the death of Khosi Vho-Mafharalala Netsianda. In the interim period, the village was under the supervision of a caretak-er-chief, Vhavenda Vho-Magiledzhi Mulaudzi.

On Saturday, a large contingent of people from Tsianda and the surrounding villages fl ocked to the palace to pay tribute to their leader, Vhavenda King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, who performed the installation rites.

He described it as a rare scenario in the history of Venda traditional leadership, as people did not hand over a throne easily. Mphephu spelt out the commandments to the new chief, which he said would make him a real people’s leader if properly

followed.Mphephu said the new chief should distinguish

himself as a unifying factor in the village and not belong to any faction. “Royalty can be traced back to biblical times when God would appoint a certain person to lead his people. You have been chosen by God to lead the people. Follow God’s will and your rule will be prolonged,” he said.

Mphephu said he was saddened to see that, these days, royalty had to be contested through the courts of law, which had not been the case in olden times. He told the new chief to remain neutral and not to take sides when trying cases. He advised the new chief to work hand in hand with his family’s royal council and to keep them abreast of all decisions and plans in his administration. He said they had worked peacefully with the new chief’s late father and were still expecting the same from the new chief.

New chief Netsianda’s ndumi is Mr Azwihangwi Netsianda and Mrs Livhuwani Netsianda Rasha-muse was appointed khadzi of the family.

The new chief, Thovhele Aluwani Netsianda, said he prefered teamwork and promised to work in close cooperation with the community. He added that the villagers must participate in the development of their village. “I am now focusing on the development of the young people in different fi elds,” he added.

The MEC for COGHSTA, Ms Makoma Maku-rupetje, encouraged the new chief to carry out his duties with dignity as the leader of his clan. She also told him to refrain from bad habits and encouraged the new chief to work hard, but she warned him against the danger of abusing his power.

“If you get out of hand, you may be dethroned by the same people who installed you in your po-sition,” Makurupetje said.

By Jennifer Karchmer

My week as guest-editor of the Mirror

I am 16 000 km from my home in Seattle, USA and all because of an email I received.

About a year ago, Anton van Zyl, the owner and publisher of the Limpopo Mirror, invited senior journalists to serve as guest editor and share tricks of the trade with fellow reporters in a “news exchange.”

As members of the ISWNE (International So-ciety of Weekly Newspaper Editors), we shared conversations with hundreds of other journalists on a group listserv discussing the ethics of news-papers, how to publish letters to the editor, how reporters should cover protests and crime and anything else related to community journalism.

From my home in Bellingham, Washington state, about 145 km north of Seattle, I logged onto my computer and read his email. I was serving as a college professor teaching journal-ism and communication at Western Washington University. Also, I was a correspondent with Re-porters Without Borders, the NGO based in Paris that helps protect and defend journalists who work in dangerous regions. Freedom of the press was my passion and my beat. In fact, in 2012, I spent six weeks in Reykjavik, Iceland interview-ing journalists and studying their media outlets.

Now, I thought, what an opportunity to do the same type of research in South Africa? I had some free time coming up, but flights from Seat-tle to Johannesburg were very expensive, running about $2,500 (R30,650) so I dismissed the idea and forgot about it for a year.

Small town roots

Originally from Poughkeepsie, New York, a small town about 145 miles north of New York City, I grew up writing and asking questions – a perfect recipe for becoming a reporter. I studied broadcast journalism at Ithaca (NY) College and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1991, moving into news radio as the start to my career. Covering school board meetings, town and zoning board meetings, local politics and elections, crime, car accidents, arts and sports was a wonderful intro-duction to news reporting.

My career ramped up when I joined the Associated Press, the premiere American news

cooperative with international offices. Based in Albany, the capital of New York state, I worked the overnight shift from 23:00 to 07:00 mon-itoring the police scanner, TV channels, radio stations and local news while writing stories for member stations and newspapers. It was the most challenging and competitive news position I held, and the most formative as I was trained by some of the best journalists in the industry.

I moved into TV as a reporter for CNN in New York covering Wall Street. This too was a thrill-ing job writing news reports and speaking to the camera effec-tively to millions of people, but I wasn’t so much attracted to the show business part of the job. I’ve always considered being a writer for newspapers to be a true journalist. Over the years, my employers have been mainstream media out-lets and conglomerates like Gannett (which owns USA Today), McClatchy, TimeWarner and AOL.

But also, I accepted opportunities to work for small, independent and privately owned newspa-pers and media companies like the Chronogram in New Paltz, NY, the Woodstock Times (as in 1969’s Woodstock), the Lake Champlain Weekly and Whatcom Watch, to name a few.

An American in France

Since I was in middle school, after taking French as a subject for a few years, I’ve had the dream of speaking French. So in August 2014, I moved to France for one year to enroll in university. I was living in the south of France in Montpellier, studying for exams and enjoying the French culture when I revisited Anton’s e-mail to

Our guest editor, Jennifer Karchmer from the USA, flanked by Wikus Lee, editor of Limpopo Mirror (left) and Andries van Zyl, news editor of Zoutpansberger (right).

come to South Africa. After several e-mails and a Skype call, we

hammered out the details of a visit. I started researching airline flights to South Africa from Paris, France, which was a much shorter trip and less expensive than from Seattle, USA. I booked my flight in mid-April, the same day I read headlines that said: “South Africa moves to defuse anti-immigrant violence” and “Xenopho-bic violence on the rise in South Africa.” What’s going on in South Africa? Did I make a mistake? Would I be safe? Some of my friends feared for my safety; others questioned why I would travel to South Africa now? I too was concerned be-cause my only image of South Africa was formed from news reports, movies and books. In the

USA, when we hear of South Af-rica, we think of Charlize Theron, Nelson Mandela, wild animals in the Kruger Na-tional Park, and recently, Trevor Noah, who has blasted onto the comedy scene as the new host of The Daily Show (he is hilarious).

The news reports about violence were disturbing but

like a good journalist, I did my research. I talked to a Facebook friend who lives in Johannesburg. I joined blogs and Facebook pages about South Africa, and I checked the United States Dept. of State for travel alerts for Americans. On 22 May, I took an Egyptair flight from Paris to Cairo, where I spent one day touring the pyramids and the sphinx. I arrived the following day in Johannesburg at OR Tambo International Airport. Touching down in a new country and a new hemisphere was exciting but nerve-wracking for me. Thankfully, as I entered the terminal after the immigration desk, my first view of South Africa was a black and white sign: “Jennifer Karchmer – welcome to South Africa,” accompanied by two smiling faces, those of Ronel Welman and her friend Emmie.

They had driven all the way from Louis Trich-ardt to come and fetch me and take me to my

new “home” for the next three weeks.

The news that’s fit to print

The atmosphere at the Limpopo Mirror is rem-iniscent of weekly papers in the U.S.: a friendly, casual, team environment where the editorial, marketing, sales and production staff all under-stand the weekly deadline rhythm. Mondays to Wednesdays are the busiest with a slowdown on Thursday and Friday but everyone is ready to get back into the swing of things. Many of the issues that American journalists face are the same here in Limpopo.

For example, covering the scene of a fire or robbery can be tense approaching the police and getting information. It’s a balancing act as the police need to do their job and sometimes don’t have time to give to reporters. At the same time, when you build trust they too realize you are do-ing your job of getting information to the public, so it’s in their best interest to be cooperative with quotes and information.

Lions, tigers and bears?

I’m told no trip to South Africa is complete without a visit to the Kruger National Park. I am scheduled to go this week with the Van Zyls, where we will stay at the Mopani Rest Camp. This is where I hope to see elephants, cheetah, giraffe, and maybe hippos in their natural habitat. I have seen a few monkeys scurrying across the street in Anton’s neighborhood, which is quite different from a stray cat or a squirrel that I typi-cally see running on my street back home.

Next week I talk to journalism students at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) about newswriting, US media, social media reporting techniques and layout and design of newspa-pers. Apparently, they would like to know how freelance journalism works in the US and how journalism differs in the US. While the experi-ence is about sharing my background as a US reporter, I too am getting a lesson in history, politics, culture and language. In fact, on Sunday, I enjoyed my first braai. The meat was cooked to perfection and I appreciated being included in this South African tradition.

The Thohoyandou police are investigating charges of business robbery, following an armed robbery that took place at the Khakhu Supermarket at Tshisa-hulu over the weekend.

According to information sup-plied by the police, a shopowner identified only as Mr Patel (73) was busy in his shop at around midday on Saturday when a man masquerading as a customer entered the shop. Thohoyandou police spokesperson Major Mashudu Malelo said the man produced a

firearm and demanded money from the shop owner.

“The man took two cellphones and R15 000 in cash before fleeing the scene on foot.

We have made no arrests so far and our investigations are continu-ing. We believe somebody some-where knows about this crime and we are appealing for information that could lead to the capture of the robber."

"Anyone with information can supply it to the nearest police sta-tion,” added Malelo.

Matimba Innocent Baloyi (20) appeared in court in connection with murder.

The life of a 30-year-old man was brought to an abrupt end when he was stabbed with a knife at Mbhokota village near Elim.

The incident took place around 03:00 along the footpath that leads to a local tavern a fortnight ago.

Residents were awakened by loud screams and cries, and they left their homes to find out what was wrong.

They found Mr Rhulani Maluleke lying dead in a pool of blood.

Waterval Police spokesperson Const Cynthia Ndou said police had opened a murder case and arrested a suspect.

Matimba Innocent Baloyi (20) appeared in the Waterval Magistrate's Court in connection with the case. It was postponed to 1 June for further investigations and a bail application. However, the matter was once again postponed to 8 June. He remains in custody.

The deceased's uncle and family spokesperson, Mr Morris Ntuli, said they were devastated after learning about Maluleke's brutal death. “This is

very disturbing. He was only a young man who was steadily building up his life, regardless of the fact that he was an orphan.”

Maluleke was laid to rest at Mbhokota village on Saturday.

Some of the villagers in Thohoyandou Unit E show their anger about not getting water.

One of the causes of the breakdown in the water supply in Thohoyandou Unit E is a broken pipe.

Water shortages causes dissatisfaction in unit EWhile the Vhembe District Munic-ipality recently conducted a water

summit aimed at solving the water crisis in the area, for the residents

of Ha-Magidi of Thohoyandou Unit E life is a nightmare.

The chairperson of the Thohoyandou Unit E Civic Association, Mr Booi Phalanndwa, said his communities had been without water for almost three months and they did not see any reason for paying for services of things that were not effec-tively rendered to them.

On Sunday, the community in Thohoyandou Unit E gathered at Magidi Primary School to discuss the water shortage. They also invited Cllr Thomas Nethonzhe of Ward 23 to attend the meeting.

During the event, members of the different communities stated that if the water crisis was not solved with immediate effect, they would take a radical approach to the matter. They also threatened that they would “march and block all roads leading to Unit E and surrounding areas”.

Phalanndwa said that they were told that when the nearby Nandoni Dam was built, it would help to solve water shortages, “but our taps always run dry”. A resident, Mr Nkhanedzeni Dzaga, said the communities were also worried as they were receiv-ing statements for water, claiming they owed the municipality lots of money. “We now ask ourselves how are they supposed to pay for services that are not rendered to them?”

Cllr Nethonzhe expressed his dissatisfaction with the current water situation and promised to assign the water committee to attend to the problem.

The spokesperson for the Vhembe District Mu-nicipality, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, said they were aware of the water shortages in Thohoyandou Unit E and surroundings and he promised to send the water technical team to establish the reason for the breakdown in supply.

Members of the Air Force Base Makhado’s Compassionate Hands Charity Project visited the Thusa Lushaka Community Home-Based Care Project in Madombidzha on Tuesday, 26 May. During their visit, they donated food parcels to the centre in order for them to continue to feed needy people in the area. The centre has more than 200 people in its care but only manages to feed about 100, who range between the ages of five and 18 years. Photo supplied.

De Beers’ R2.2 million donation has helped to transform the Grootpan Community Crèche from a small mud structure with primitive outside ablutions to a modern early childhood development centre (ECDC) boasting a bore-hole, septic tank, and specialist furniture and playground facilities.

The crèche, situated at the Grootpan Village (Blouberg), was officially opened by the Depart-ment of Mineral Resources’ director, Mr Vinesh Devchanda, the mayor of Blouberg Local Mu-nicipality (BLM), Cllr Serita Sekgoloane, and the general manager of De Beers’ Venetia Mine, Mr Ludwig van Maltitz, on Tuesday, 26 May.

The crèche will house 60 children between the ages of four and six. The project forms part of Venetia Mine’s social and labour plan, and the partnership between De Beers and the BLM focuses on working together to create sustainable ECDCs aligned to the municipality’s holistic ap-proach to education in the region. In the spirit of community development, the majority of labourers and artisans involved in the project were sourced from the local community, as are the three ECDC coordinators currently employed at the crèche. In his speech, Von Maltitz touched on the importance of public-private partnerships. “As a member of the Blouberg community, it gives De Beers Venetia Mine great pleasure to contribute to the shaping of young lives. As we entrust this facility to the community of Grootpan and the BLM, we are humbled by the vast potential of the youth of our great country,” Von Maltitz said. He added that De Beers was committed to ensuring that the diamonds mined at their Venetia operation did good in the communities of Blouberg and Musina and they were confident that the Grootpan Community Crèche would contribute positively to equipping young children with the tools of life to be inde-pendent and to be able to shape their future. “The facility and, most importantly, the care givers will provide a safe environment and with single mind look to the wellbeing and early childhood develop-

Last Tuesday’s opening of the Grootpan Community Crèche also doubled as a sod-turning ceremony to signify the start of construction at the Siaz Village Crèche. ment of many children to come,” Von Maltitz said.“Projects such as this one make me proud to be a

South African. As the regulator, we are constantly in search of benchmark projects and companies who are an example of ‘business doing things right’ and that is exactly what Venetia Mine has shown today,” said Devchanda.

This is not the end of De Beers’ bid to assist with early childhood development centres. Last Tuesday’s opening of the crèche also doubled as a sod turning to signify the start of construction at the Siaz Village Crèche. The project will is estimated to cost R2.5 million and will take on a similar project scope to that of Grootpan.

Heroes welcome for Pastor NemaenzhePastor Victor Nemaenzhe received a hero’s welcome Sunday at his church, the Apostolic Faith Mission in SA (AFM), after returning from a 12-day trip to Israel.

From 15 to 27 of May, Ne-maenzhe attended the interna-tional conference, “Celebrating the Coming of the Holy Spirit,” which had representatives from 71 countries. His trip also in-cluded a visit to Egypt and Jordan. During the party to welcome him home with cakes and food, members of the church

were happy to receive biblical pamphlets and hear about his experiences in the Land of the Bible. The pastor, who was visibly elated, said the trip was an eye-opener as he saw most of the things he had studied at Bible school.

“We always read about these places in the Bible and now that we visited there, we have a better understanding of the place and this will also make us under-stand the Bible better,” he said. “This will benefit our church because we will be preaching

of things we personally know.”Mr Nyaweleni Mafadza said

members of the church had been praying since he left.

“We have been looking for-ward to his return with anticipa-tion. We have been praying for him to travel safely and we are extremely happy that he is back. The best part of it is that he did not come back empty handed as he brought some reading materi-als for us,” Mafadza said. “Our pastor being empowered means that we will also be empowered in return.”

The church welcomes Pastor Victor Nemaenzhe with cakes and other pleasantries during the welcoming function.

Musina Municipality

“Confessions should be private”

Own municipal offices for residents of Domboni

Johannes Mathe, former head boy of Eric Louw High School in Musina, was recently chosen to be the new face of the Nivea company in their advertisement campaigns. Mathe matriculated at Eric Louw in 2009. Photo supplied.

In response to Limpopo Mirror’s media inquiry about the picture of a nine-year-old supposedly HIV- positive boy, which was published on Charis Missionary Church’s Facebook page, and the public con-fessions, the South African Council of Churches’ provincial secretary, Rev Lechipisha Mohlala, said that all people must take responsibility of their actions.

“From my personal view, publi-cising a person’s confession is not pastoral practice,” he said.

“As a pastor, I’m li-able to keep a client’s confession private and confidential, according to the pastoral code of conduct.”

He said that the South African Council of Churches viewed some practices by so-called charismatic formations as prosperity seekers at the expense of vulner-able individuals due to either diseases or life challenges.

“They take advantage of their lack of knowl-edge of the Holy Scrip-ture to imply that they hold absolute power from God and, unfor-tunately, people fall for that,” he said.

Mohlala indicated then that, because peo-ple need healing and a

good life, they subject themselves to the self-portrait healers and hope for redemption.

“The result is a fabricated belief that wealth and health are found in these schemes,” he said.

He then concluded by saying that it was important for the public to take responsibility for their actions and to stop blaming churches for subjecting them to these abuses and own up to their error in judgment on these practices by the wealth seekers in the name of the church.

Requests by the residents of Domboni to have their own municipal offices have borne fruit, and travelling long distances for municipal services will soon be a thing of the past.

The construction of municipal offices in Dom-

boni has already begun. The senior manager of technical

services of the Musina Munici-pality, Mr Chuene Dinyake, said construction would be completed and officially handed over to the mu-nicipality by mid-June this year. “To bring much-needed services closer to our people, we will ensure that the construction process is completed as per the set deadline. The project includes two offices, a boardroom, ablution facilities, a kitchen, palisade fencing, a borehole with storage fa-cility and the installation of a septic tank,” Dinyake said.

Municipal spokesperson Wilson Dzebu said the building of municipal offices at Domboni would simplify things for all residents in the area. “As a caring municipality, we always respond promptly to the needs of our people.

Upon completion of the municipal office, the community of Domboni will be able to buy electricity, pay their rates and also interact with mu-nicipal officials.”

Cllr Fistos Mafela, who is the coun-cillor for the Dombeni area, could not contain his joy. “This is good news to our people. They will soon access municipal services at their doorstep and will no longer travel all the way to other municipal offices for services. Indeed, we are a caring government and this is what I call service delivery at its best,” Mafela said.

Mafela urged the community to take ownership of the offices once they are completed. “Everyone in Domboni should make use of the of-fices once they are completed. We are all responsible for our infrastructure and it is important to take good care of them.”

Work in progress at the construction site of the Domboni municipal offices.

Music lovers around the Sinthumule, Kutama and from other areas braved the cold weather on Saturday night and attended the inaugural leg of the Africa Day Reggae Festival in great numbers.

The event, held at AfreeCa Resort at Tshiozwi village, was organised by Murendeni Ramunenyiwa, under the theme We are Africa.

The AfreeCa resort’s series of musi-cal festival projects is supported by the Department of Arts and Culture (Mzansi Golden Economy).

A large number of artists, such as Colbert Mukwevho, Zwido, Khakhathi & Friends, Humbulani Ramagwedzha, Kenny Murabi, Muofhe, Code Munda-lamo, and Cornerstone gave outstanding performances.

“This is a colorful, creative and cap-tivating celebration of African unity

through music and culture,” Ramuneny-iwa said. “The festival aims to support cultural identity, tourism and economic activities in and around the Makhado area.”

The festival aimed to provide a sound-development platform for the growing number of local artists who leave the region to go to Johannesburg to seek opportunities. “We see the event as contributing to social cohesion and nation building while entrenching our African identity through musical performances,” he said.

The festival started with a hip-hop event a fortnight ago, where Vhembe artists showcased their singing abilities. Hip-hop artists such as Mizo Phyll sup-ported the show.

“The vision of this festival is mainly to allow local vernacular hip-hop artists a

platform at a mainstream level,” he said. “Very little is going on with regard to the promotion of Venda artists in South Africa.

Some artists have already released more than three albums but have never performed to an audience bigger than 50 people. But the quality of their music is no less, compared to any hip-hop or house stars around the world.”

He indicated that there was a huge hip-hop culture in the district and it hurt to see things ending up in the street or being pirated without benefi ting the artists who spent sleepless nights working on such projects.

“In general essence, the festival cel-ebrates unity among all the peoples of Africa. It is also a campaign against the xenophobic attacks on illegal foreig ners,” he said.

This week the Grade 10 pupils of the Tshikevha Christian School in Sibasa had the opportunity to visit one of the oldest fi ghter squadrons of the South African National Defence Force, namely 2 Squadron based at Air Force Base Makhado. The squadron’s navigator, Capt Themba Vilakazi, and leader, Lt-Col Musa Mbhokota, played host to the pupils and spoke to them about the benefi ts of pursuing a career in the air force. Photo supplied.

Pupils from Mamvuka Secondary School and Jonathan Mushathama Secondary School received a warm welcome at the Legal Aid SA in Louis Trichardt.

“Future lawyers” investigate local justice centreA group of pupils from two rural schools enjoyed the benefi ts of the Take a Girl Child to Work pro-gramme on Thursday last week, when they were hosted at the Makhado Justice Centre.

The pupils, from Mamvuka Sec-ondary School and Jonathan Musha-

thama Secondary School, were orien-tated in the working environment of the legal representatives at Legal Aid SA in Louis Trichardt. The pupils also visited the Louis Trichardt Magis-trate’s Court to experience the court’s environment and working space.

The event was held with the assis-

tance of Cell C, who selected the two schools to be taken to Take a Girl Child to Work.

“The learners from the respective schools enjoyed experiencing a feeling of working with our Legal Aid Lawyers,” said Legal Aid Attorney Frank Moropane. “They asked questions which I did not expect from learners from the Dzanani area.” He added that he was deeply moved by the pupils’ passion to become future lawyers. “They fell in love with the profession after they learned that Legal Aid SA represents the indigent and the vulnerable, especially women and children,” he said.

The pupils also also visited the holding cells at the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court, where they were left shocked and afraid after tasting the feeling of being inside the dark cells. Pupils pointed out that, even as the lights were on, the cells felt and seemed dark.

“They did not wish to fi nd themselves in cells, not this year or any other year,” Moropane said. “We were so happy to realise that our Take a Girl Child project not only made learners take an interest in the law fi eld, but that it encouraged them to stay away from any acts of crime.”

A pupil, Elelwani Ndou (18), extended words of gratitude to Cell C and the Makhado Justice Centre for taking a girl child to work. “The day was won-derful – and I would like to thank all stakeholders for the advice, knowledge and information given

MOUNTAIN INN AUCTION

Soccer festival at the Giyani Stadium

New colours for Manini Real Madrid

Provincial matches for Tshilwavhusiku

The affiliates for the Limpopo Stream of the ABC Motsepe League will play their second-last league matches this weekend.

The Giyani Stadium will be a hive of activity tomorrow afternoon. That is where the long-await-ed double header will be staged. The first match will be between Dynamos and Magezi FC and is scheduled to kick off at 13:00.

Dynamos have only pride to lose in the match as they are well positioned on the log, while Magezi are currently leading the pack. Magezi are still fresh from a 5-0 victory over Polokwane United at the TT Cholo Stadium in Polokwane, while Dynamos played to a 2-2 draw with Joe Express last Saturday.

The second match will be between Bilika All Stars and A1 Terrors. Both teams are fighting for survival and for that reason the sparks are expected to fly. A1 Terrors and Bilika All Stars won their last matches. Joe Express will travel to Polokwane where they will battle for league points against Great North FC at the Seshego Stadium.

It remains to be seen whether Great North FC will be able to make Joe Express pay for the 0-3 defeat which they suffered at the hands of Winners Park last weekend.

The Waterberg derby between Mosesetjane All Stars and Modimolle Aces will be played at the Mahwelereng Stadium in Mokopane. Modimolle Aces desperately need the points for the match in order to move out of the relegation zone, where they are currently languishing.

Lephalale Young Killers will travel to Polok-

wane, where they will lock horns with The Dol-phins. Young Killers are still in mourning after losing 0-1 to Mighty FC last weekend.

Winners Park will be the visiting side in their match against Mighty FC at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium this evening, starting at 18:00.

Photographed during the ceremony are, from left to right, Mr Andries Mulovhedzi, Nndwamato Mamphiswana, Evans Chauke, Lufuno Muedi, Rofhiwa Makhado, Khumbelo Phophi, Ronald Mulovhedzi, Ms Sharon Rasifudi and Paulos Nemangwela.

Maniini Real Madrid FC are flying new colours, after the management of Tshiulungoma Over-night Accommodation (TOA) donated sporting equipment to the club. The donation took place last Friday.

The general manager of TOA, Mr Ronald Mu-lovhedzi, handed over a complete soccer kit and 20 pairs of soccer boots to the value of R12 000 to the assistant coach of the team, Mr Rofhiwa Makhado.

Mulovhedzi said that the decision to donate the soccer equipment to the club was influenced by a number of factors. He mentioned that the donation was a token of appreciation for the support they were get-ting from the residents. Makhado said that the donation would go a long way in boosting the

players’ morale. He said the club was established about a year

ago with the primary aim of engaging the children constructively.

Although it was their debut season as an affiliate of the Thulamela LFA, they finished their league programme in the 10th position.

A floor hockey team from the Tshilwavhusiku Razwimisani Special School earned them-selves an opportunity to play at provincial level.

This comes after they had per-formed well during the Vhembe Special Olympics. The games were played at Thohoyandou Stadium a fortnight ago.

“This only means that we need to start preparing for the provin-cial games,” said Tshimangadzo

Sasa (21), floor hockey school captain. He added that they were happy about beating two teams and eventually emerging as floor hockey champs at district level.

The school’s hockey team made history when they clob-bered Mhinga 12-0. They went on to win 1-0 against Grace and Love.

Floor Hockey Coach Ms Win-nie Petlo indicated that the team hoped to win more positions in

the country. “We want to see the team

playing nationally and interna-tionally,” she said. “We just have got to stick to our regular training and coaching our children ap-propriately. We want to believe that all things are possible for those who believe in themselves while also making sure that they work hard.”

The date for the provincial Olympics is yet to be announced.

The victorious floor hockey team from Tshilwavhusiku Razwimisani Special School qualified to play in the provincial hockey games.

Victory for Arsenal after Muofhe’s header

Khumbudzo Neswiswi of Arsenal (right) kicks the ball, while Unarine Ralukake of Powerline intercepts.

Arsenal FC beat Tshaulu Powerline 1-0 in their MTG and PIB Soccer Challenge match at the Makhuvha Stadium on Saturday.

Powerline made their first attempt in the 17th minute. Their fast forward, Rofhiwa Nekhavhambe, received a brilliant pass from Khuliso Libago and tried to force his way through the Ar-senal defence. Mudzungwane blocked Nekhavhambe’s way and ultimately dispossessed him.

Alson Baloyi of Powerline was booked for a late tackle on Khuliso Muofhe in the 24th minute. Unarine Ralukake of Powerline was lucky to escape with a verbal warning in the 28th minute after he tackled Rinae Goma from behind.

Arsenal’s left flank, Khuthadzo Neswiswi, missed a fortune in the 38th minute. He dribbled past two Power-line defenders in a row and shot wide from close range.

The goal through which Arsenal booked a place in the semi-final of the competition came in the 57th minute. Khuliso Muofhe scored with a header, following a corner kick that was taken

by Khuthadzo Neswiswi. Arsenal played defen-sive football for the remaining part of the game, with Powerline firing on all cylinders.

Steve Liuvha of Arsenal kicks the ball.

Munangwe Brothers in the semifinalsMunangwe United Brothers booked a place in the semifinal stage of the MTG and PIB Soccer Challenge by beating Tswinga Peace Makers 4-2 at the Makhuvha Stadium on Saturday.

Youth Day celebrations at TshikotaThe Charismatic Rhythms Arts Foundation is organising a two-day event to commemorate Youth Day.

It will take place on 15 and 16 June at the Tshikota Community Hall and the organisers are call-ing all young people to come and attend the event. It will start with

a workshop, facilitated by indus-try professionals in music, dance, drama and poetry. The workshop will feature professional guests artists from Johannesburg, the Free State and Limpopo.

On the 16th, a competition will take place. All performanc-es must portray the message of

liberation in commemoration of Youth Day. A meeting to discuss the event will take place tomor-row (Saturday) at the Healing Covenant Christian Centre at 14:00. For more information phone Tendani Tshivhula on 071 316 5640 or Kagiso Kekana on 073 6227 518 or 072 090 8600.

opponents’ danger area. They opened their ac-count in the eighth min-ute. Their lethal striker, Mahlari Chauke, caught the opponents’ keeper, Lavhelesani Ndou, nap-ping and beat him with a long-range volley.

Peace Makers lost shape in the middle of the park shortly after the Brothers’ opening goal. They were severely pun-ished for that. Mahlari Chauke comple ted his brace by hooking in a loose ball after a scramble within the box. Peace Makers gained momentum as the game progressed. They man-aged to pull one back before the proceedings for the first half came to an end. Limani Raulinga scored with a half-vol-ley from what looked like an offside position.

United Brothers ef-fected two changes to

their starting line-up early in the last half. They introduced Khethani Netshishivhe and Wit-ness Hobyane for Ntakadzeni Matshivha and Orifha Kutama. Avhatakali Maungedzo of United Brothers was brought down with-in the box. That was a clear pen-alty for Brothers. Jeffrey Mabasa converted from the white spot.

Peace Makers scored the third via Tshimangadzo Mushidzhi,

following a great pass from Vhut-shilo Mudau. United Brothers were reduced to 10 men when Prince Mbedzi was given his marching orders for tackling Tshimangadzo Mushidzhi from behind. United Brothers in-creased the margin four minutes before the final whistle when Jeffrey Mabasa scored with a ground cutter.

The coach of United Brothers, Mr Jonas Simba, congratulates the goal scorers, Mahlori Chauke (right) and Jeffrey Mabasa, after the game.

Home Defenders overpower DynamosMpheni Home Defenders overpowered Tshiozwi Dyna-mos 2-1 in their Safa Vhembe MMK Administrators match at the Mpheni grounds on Saturday.

There was a spirit of commitment from both sides throughout the game. Dynamos were intimidated by a yellow card that was flashed to their de-fender, Velaphi Mp-haphuli, in the 15th minute. The keeper of Dynamos, Thendo Shivhishi, caused an upset when he failed to handle the ball properly. The ball hit his knees and bounced back into play. Melvin Mabatha was in a per-fect scoring position to tap the ball into the net.

Nengovhela reduced the mar-gin and scored the only goal of his team in the 34th minute. They had very little time to celebrate, as Defenders found their second goal in the 40th

minute via Melvin Mabatha. Defenders should have scored, but their chance was denied by acrobatic goal keeper Thendo Shivhishi, who palmed the ball out for a corner kick.

Joe Express and Dynamos in a draw

Top honours for Tshilwavhusiku Razwimisani in Special Olympics 2015

Thembisani Nevhulamba scored the two goals for Joe Express.

After losing all four their previous, Joe Express made a comeback and grabbed one point against Dynamos. They played to 2-2 draw in their ABC Motsepe League match at the Makwarela Stadium last Saturday.

Thembisani Nevhulamba scored the two goals for Joe Express, while Eric Chauke and Daniel Hlongwane scored for Dynamos. Express did not move even an inch on the log, although they man-aged to deposit a point into their league account last Saturday. They are still lying in the ninth spot with 30 points.

The unexpected happened at the Ephraim Mo-hale Stadium in Modimolle on Sunday. One of the league title chasers, Bellevue Winners Park, lost 0-1 to Modimolle Aces. Aces, who were fighting for survival from the beginning of the season, moved two steps up on the log. They are now out of the relegation zone.

On the other hand, the pace setters, Magezi FC, continued to pave their way up by beating Polokwane United 5-0 at the TT Cholo Stadium in Polokwane. Magezi are sure of a place in the promotional play-offs that will be played later this month.

With only two matches remaining, Magezi are leading with 76 points, nine ahead of Bellevue Winners Park.

Other results are: Mighty FC 1, Lephalale Young Killers 0; A1 Terrors 2, The Dolphins 0; Bilika All

Stars 3, Giyani Hotspurs 0; Winners Park 3, Great North FC 3.

The boys team from Tshilwavhusiku Razwimisani Special School won the Vhembe Special Olympics’ prize in the soccer category.

The girls soccer team from Tshilwavhusiku Razwimisani Special School. With the players are the chief sports coach, Mpho Lishivha (back, left) and Ms Anna Ramasala.

Tshilwavhusiku Razwimisani Special School excelled in the recent games of the Vhembe Special Olympics 2015, which were held at the Thohoyandou Stadium.

Tshilwavhusiku Razwimisani first beat Hayani 7-0 and then they beat Grace and Love 5-3. In the final, they beat Risongo-neta 4-3.

The coach, Mr Mpho Lishivha, said that the boys “proved to us

and everyone at the stadium that they are the best in the district. They remain a motivated team of winners.”

The team received a soccer kit, a trophy and a ball for their achievement. “We are happy about the new soccer jersey,” said Boldwin Siphei (16). “It will motivate us to work even harder now.”

On the girls’ side, the school played against Nhlovo and beat

them 1-0. They beat Grace and Love 1-0 in the final. The team’s captain, Tshimangadzo Siphali (20), said that they didn’t know they would win this year’s leg of the Vhembe Special School games. “But we are hard work-ers,” she said. “We know we are the best, and out of the best team only comes the best!”

She thanked Mr Lishivha for training and coaching them on a weekly basis at the school.

Players of Mpheni Home Defenders celebrate after they emerged as the champions of the Safa Vhembe MMK Administrators League (Stream E) on Saturday. They beat Tshiozwi Dynamos 2-1 at Mpheni on Saturday.

Team PJ Timbers won the annual golf day of the Kutama Sinthumule Correctional Centre, which was hosted on Friday, 29 May, at the Soutpansberg Golf Club. Photographed with the winning team are, from left to right, Mr Harold Maghosha (Key Account Executive Sizwe Medical Fund), Maartin Venter, Inus Steyn, Flippie Greyling, Danie Jooste and Mr Dezi Mzimba (Senior Key Account Executive of Sizwe Medical Fund). Four ladies soccer and two netball ball teams will partici-pate in a youth sports tourna-ment at the Mutale Matshena grounds on Saturday.

The sponsor of the tour-nament, Mr Fhatuwani "The Best" Rananga, has indicated that his company is ploughing back what it gained from the community. He congratulated the organisers on developing

the talent of the youth around the area.

The organiser, Mr Hardlife Mudodovhi, stated that it was important that future stars' talent be identified at grass-roots level. He applauded the sponsors for helping to identify the talent of the region's youth and added that the youth of this region should be proud of their talent.

In the soccer tournament, Real Madrid will face Domboni at 08:00, followed by Matshena vs Tiger Girls. The winners of the two matches will meet in the final at 15:30. In the only netball match, Matshena and Tiger Girls will meet at 12:00.

The winners of the com-petition will receive medals, trophies and soccer or netball balls.

Ladies soccer and netball at MutaleNo peace for the Beuster Mighty Chiefs

Mulalo Nemahunguni of Mighty Chiefs chases the high ball.

Khubvi Peace Makers gave Beuster Mighty Chiefs no peace when they beat them 5-3 in their MTG and PIB Soccer Challenge quarterfinal match at the Makhuvha Stadium on Saturday.

It took Peace Makers only five minutes to stamp their authority on the match. Their overlapping midfielder, Rudzani Mbengeni, beat the offside trap and sent in a rocket from the edge of the box. That was a wake-up call for Mighty Chiefs.

They regrouped from behind, frustrating the opponents through their dribbling skills and levelled matters. Peace Makers took the lead again in the 19th minute. Rudzani Madambi headed home after a free kick that was taken by Lufuno Mabila.

The wheel of fortune turned against Mighty Chiefs again sev-en minutes afterwards. Rudzani Madambi scored with a bicycle

kick after a scramble within the box. Mighty Chiefs pulled one back before the teams adjourned for the half-time break. Khathu Nemahunguni was on target with a half-volley.

Mighty Chiefs approached the last half aggressively, with their strikers looking thirsty for goals. They found the equalizer nine minutes into the last half. Rialivhuwa Muthivhi went loose from the right corner and beat the keeper with a ground cutter.

to Chiefs after the replacements. Their fast forward, Thomani Mafukasaga, scored two beau-tiful goals in quick succession. He headed home after a corner kick that was taken by Rudzani Mbengeni in the 74th minute. Mafukasaga was on target again two minutes later. This time around he blasted in a rocket from close range.

Makhitha Oscar too good for PowerlinesMakhitha Oscar Stars were too strong for Zoutpansberg Powerline and beat them 2-1 in their MMK Administrators League match at Madabani on Saturday.

Powerline could have scored four goals during the first half, but their strikers were unlucky. They had their first chance three minutes into the game. Lawrence Mande, who was later replaced with Khaukanani Makhavhu, could not believe his eyes when his half-volley hit the woodwork and bounced back into the field of play.

As if that was not enough to stir up the team’s fans, Rudzani Nembulu missed a fortune seven minutes later.

He received a pre-cooked pass from Hector Nthulane and unleashed a volley from inside the box. The ball hit the crossbar and landed outside the field of play for a goal kick.

No goal was seen during the first half, despite numerous attempts. Stars were the first to effect a change to their original lineup. They introduced Hector Ledwaba and sacrificed Shumani Ravhan-dalala in the 57th minute.

A scramble within the box gave rise to the first goal for Stars. In the 64th minute, Marubini Maupa hooked in a loose ball to give his side a well-deserved lead. Stars continued to dominate after the goal.

Powerline scored in the 70th minute. Jayson Maisha tried his luck from the 25-meter area with a volley. Stars’ keeper, Pasca Mukona, watched helplessly as the ball crossed the goal line.

Stars clinched the match when their midfield-er-cum-striker, Hector Ledwaba, tried his luck from inside the box with a ground cutter and hit the back of the net.

Black Leopards’ fans were in an ecstatic mood after their team’s 1-0 victory over Moroka Swallows at the Thohoyandou Stadium last Sunday. Three days later they were in mourning… this after the result for the match between Jomo Cosmos and Moroka Swallows which was to decide whether Lidoda Duvha would be promoted to the Absa Premiership, did not go their way.

Jomo Cosmos beat Swallows 1-0 through a goal that came via Wiseman Maluleke in the 77th minute of their match at the Dobsonville Stadium on Wednesday evening. Black Leopards’ wish was that the match should end in a draw or Moroka Swallows should, win but neither of these happened.

Black Leopards have themselves to blame for their failure to make the grade in the playoffs.

Had they converted all their

obvious chances against Mo-roka Swallows last Sunday, they would not have had to wait for the match between Cosmos and Swallows to know their future.

Cosmos gained promotion to the elite league by virtue of a better goal difference, as they were tied on seven points with Black Leopards.

Against Swallows, Leopards’ leading goal scorer, Ruggert Nyundu, as well as Meshack Maphangule and Leonard Ntshangase missed sitters, before Nyundu scored the goal that earned Lidoda Duvha three points.

Although Moroka Swal-lows were already relegated to the lower league when they hosted Cosmos on Wednesday, they did not leave anything to chance.

They went all out giving the Cosmos midfi elders no time to breathe. They were reduced to ten men in the 38th minute

when their

veteran midfi elder, Lerato Chabangu,

was given his marching orders following a dan-gerous tackle on Wiseman Maluleke.

Swallows gave the Leopards some hope by playing attacking football despite all the odds but their hearts were broken when Maluleke beat the Swallows’ keeper with a half volley after a defence splitting pass by Felix Obada. Now Black Leop-ards must wait for another season to see if they can secure a place in the country’s elite league.

Oh, so close!

Thivhavhudzi Ndou of Leopards hooks the ball while Lantshene Phalane of Swallows goes the wrong way.
