Sunday in Ordinary Time: The Cup and Baptism Mk 10:35�45 or 10:42�45�

�

Today, the brothers James and John request something from Jesus. But unlike the request of the

rich�young man last Sunday, they are not seeking eternal life but a place of glory with Jesus. Je-

sus is on His way to Jerusalem; they probably think that He is about to put Himself in power, and

they want a share in the glory of Jesus. Despite the many times � Jesus tells them that He is to suf-

fer and die at the hands of their leaders. The lure of greatness urges them to ask for a place of

honor, taking a seat, one at His right and the other on His left.�

�

One of the natural tendencies of men is to fulfill their worldly ambitions. In the world of �

competition, being the best, being number one, and being on the top in honor and power �

sometimes is the most important. The pressure of becoming number one at all cost make us �

vulnerable to the many schemes and traps of easy or instant wealth, ultimate success, and the

glamour of fame and prominence. Jesus warns us of the many deceptions of this kind of mindset.

Beware of seeking earthly vanity, success, and self�glorification.�

�

Like His response to the rich young man, Jesus did not turn away the two disciples. Instead, He

looks at them with love and invites them to follow the path of true greatness. Yes, they can �

accomplish some of the things that Jesus does. They may even have the qualifications to imitate

the mission of their Master. But to seek to gain honor; and the glory of being a disciple, Jesus

says: to accomplish this involves “drinking the cup” and sharing in His “baptism.” Their �

response: “We can,” reveal that they are ignorant that the metaphors stand for suffering � with �

Jesus. Knowing how little the disciples still know how He intends to accomplish His mission: �

Jesus puts it gently and positively. Rather than telling them point�blank: that He is�like a lamb led

to the slaughter. Jesus�shares with the disciples the cup of suffering. He calls suffering a baptism

to show that its effect means the cleansing of the sins of humanity.�

�

The final honor and glory of every disciple � receiving Jesus Himself. Jesus accomplishes this by

laying down His life as a ransom for our sins, the sacrifice of “the Lamb of God” who takes away

our sins. He differs vastly from worldly leaders, who often lord their authority and power over

their subjects or constituents. But with Jesus; comes in the form of a suffering servant who�has

not come to be served but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many ��and the salvation of

humanity.�He also invites His follower to take the same path. Jesus gives a pattern, a way of life

for a disciple to enter glory: must serve the needs of all. The way to glory is by humble service.�

True power and greatness begin in humble service. The humble bends down to serve without any

fanfare, without counting the cost, without pride and fear. Who is the greatest and the powerful?

The one who genuinely and humbly ministers to all.

Jesus teaches us that humility is the key to true �

greatness. The greatest among us; are those who have

the abilities to stoop down and serve, those who can

forget their position to minister to the needs of others.��

All Souls Day�

�

During the month of November we remember our loved ones who have

died. On All Souls Day, Tuesday, November 2, Father Bing will celebrate a

special mass at 7:00 PM for those loved ones who have died during the past

two years.�

�

During the month of October, you are invited to write the names of loved

ones who have died on a paper, bring the paper to the Spirituality Center

and place it in the designated basket in the vestibule. The names will be

entered into the Memory Book and will be placed on the altar during the

month of November. �

�

On behalf of Anthem Giving Circle we would like to thank St. Rose and the Vincentians of St.

Rose for publicizing, supporting and participating in our annual Fill Up the Cups bra drive for the

Women in Need program for St. Vincent de Paul downtown. �

�

Our campaign was extremely successful this year providing over 725 bras and $525 to the pro-

gram! St. Rose contributed over 125 bras and $100, so you can see how important your roll is to

Fill Up the Cups.�

�

We are also very thankful for the St. Rose chapter of St. Vincent de Paul for being our clearing

house for contributions to our community. We provide over $18,000 each year and you are so

important to that process.�
