Police, working with the Port Authority, and the family of the second drowning victim at Pedro Castle, will seek to post warnings in the area, hoping to restrict access to waters after the latest incident.

The effort comes as Justin Henry, 16, the first drowning victim, was interred at George Town’s Dixie Cemetery on Monday evening after jumping from the bluff on Boxing Day.

Prior to his Monday Church of God funeral, Justin had been commemorated at a Sunday candlelight ceremony at the George Town Primary Annex, even as police pulled the body of Adam Rankine, 21, from the same Pedro Bluff waters.

Yesterday, RCIPS Marine Unit Inspector Clive Smith said police, following the second incident, were renewing efforts to signpost the rocky areas adjacent to the Pedro Castle attraction, seeking to “find out who is responsible for the area. We hope to have something in the near future.”

New Year’s Eve in West Bay was the scene of a huge family get-together.

They were all the descendants of Grandma Ellen Ebanks, who lived in West Bay, and died in 1956 at the age of 85.

She had ten children, Leila, Chrissie, Adella, Emily, Martha, Ellen, Freddy, Austin, Cadian, and Malcolm, and although none of them are living today, the Sir John A Cumber School Hall was filled with her grandchildren, great, and great-great grandchildren.

Although many of them still live in Cayman, many others had travelled from far and wide, such as Dr. William Combs and his wife, Emily Combs who had come all the way from Naples, Florida. “We are very please to be here,” Dr. Combs said.

“She’s my great grandmother, and her husband was James Ebanks We called him Grampa Jim-Jim,” said one of the event’s organisers, Ezethamae

Bodden. “She lived in Birch Tree Hill, and had ten children, and from those ten children 102 grandchildren were born, and from that, 305 great-grandchildren. From that, it’s just multiplied, so now we’re over a thousand strong,” Ms Bodden added.

Over two hundred and fifty signed the family book, left at the hall’s doorway, but Ms Bodden thinks that nearly twice that number joined in the celebration altogether.

When everyone was seated the get-together began with a prayer-and-praise service.

Barbara Morrison, another organizer, led family members in a prayer for the bereaved, and then everyone joined in by singing a very appropriate song, The Family of God.

Then it was time for the family photo. But how do you get hundreds of family members into the picture? It took some organizing, but eventually everyone was in, and smiling, ready for the camera.

Afterwards everybody tucked into a big traditional Cayman buffet-style meal complete with delicious stewed conch.

Police investigate second death in a week

Continued from front page

Tad [email protected]

Acknowledging the area is private property, Inspector Smith said inquiries were under way: “We are not able to see yet, but are looking into getting proper signs up. We send our condolences to the family, and are pleading for others to think before going there.”

One member of Mr Rankine’s family said the group was distraught, struggling with the tragedy, but, like police, would seek to warn others about swimming at the bluffs.

”Every kid on the island has been down there, people have done it for years. Signs should be put there, and I am going to try to get something,” she said.

“There should at least be reels of rope or life rings or something. Rather than people saying that encourages swimming there, it’s better to have something, at least a couple of lines, rather than nothing at all.”

At Sunday’s George Town gathering Minster of Health, Youth and Sports Mark Scotland described his frustration at the difficulty of posting warning signs in the area.

“How much can we do?” he asked. “It’s private property down there and we can’t just put up fences and signs. People will climb over or go around, but it’s limited what we can do.”

Inspector Smith described the events surrounding Mr Rankine’s death.

“It was a similar situation to what took place a week ago,” he said, referring to Justin Henry. “The Marine Department attended Pedro Bluff. but the weather conditions were worse, with very strong currents. Mr Rankine went off the cliffs at the same point as Justin Henry, watched by his sister and one other female.

“The call,” he said, “came at 4:30, the same time as the other one, and the Marine Unit arrived within half-an-hour, about 5:00, with volunteer rescue divers from the Red Cross.”

No helicopters were called, he said, and the body was recovered at 5:37, “taking shorter than the first time. The sister was able to pinpoint the area,”

Inspector Smith said. The search for Justin Henry had

involved the RCIPS helicopter, but was discontinued at nightfall on Boxing Day. The search resumed Tuesday (27), at 9:30, and the body was finally found in 39 feet of water, 50 yards offshore.

The family of Mr Rankine hoped to have a funeral on Sunday at one of the Seventh Day Adventist churches.

“It hasn’t been set yet, and we aren’t sure which one, but we are moving in that direction. We may have a candlelight service as well,” she said, describing the family’s pain.

“His 15-year-old sister watched her brother drown,” she said. “She had come down only on Saturday from Canada and he was going away with them for New Year’s.”

Immigration launches new formsEfforts to streamline and modernise Department of Immigration operations continue, with revised application forms and expedited document-processing services now available online. These can be accessed on the department’s website: www.immigration.gov.ky.The application forms are for

business staffing plans, permit grants and renewals, as well as for the temporary-, seasonal- and business visitors-permits. The new Term Limit Exemption Permit (TLEP) application form is also posted online.“These documents were updated

after efficiency evaluations were carried out in recent weeks,” said Chief Immigration Officer Linda Evans. She added that a new checklist

accompanies each of these grant and renewal forms, with the goal of reducing processing times.“The new checklists should help

ensure that customers provide all the supporting paperwork with their applications,” said Ms Evans. “This is critical, for as of 1st March 2012 we will no longer accept incomplete applications as this has demanded a large amount of time in the past.”Users of the Immigration

Department services are encouraged to check online and verify their documentation against the newly-created checklist in order to avoid delays in their applications being processed.Deputy Chief Immigration Officer

for Administration Samantha Bennett has responsibility for customer service and the intake of applications. She said that, to improve service standards, the department requires all of the correct, completed and essential documentation to support each application.“Application processing times

can be much-improved if all paperwork is complete at the time of submission,” said Mrs. Bennett.

The most poignant moment came early when Justin Henry’s half-sister, Shenice, 10, rose to read the poem she had written to her brother.

Through tears, she struggled to read the simple verse on the four-foot-high poster board she had brought along from her Miami home. She had adorned the display with photographs of Justin, their family, herself and her brother in happier times.

As much as she tried, Shenice couldn’t restrain the weeping that shook her small body. Handing the microphone to her Aunt Patricia, who had accompanied her to Cayman, she buried her head in the older woman’s skirts.

Aunt Patricia read the five lines, then Shenice stepped up, composure regained: ”I know Justin’s spirit is with us this evening. Why I couldn’t read the poem is that knowing my brother is dead is really hard for me.

“When my mother told me, I broke down, and now it feels like a part of me is missing. This was just a reminder of how much I loved him. I really wish he was still alive to see all the people here,” she told the packed stands at the George Town Primary School Annex on Sunday night.

More than 500 people, many of them classmates, football teammates, neighbours, friends and family – including mother Lisa, grandmother Dorothy and sisters Jesanna, Janaya, Jahsara and Shenice -- packed the

seats at the field, lighting candles and reflecting on the passing of the 16-year-old who drowned on Boxing Day after leaping from the cliffs near Pedro Castle.

Hundreds wore tee-shirts inscribed with the legend “Safe in the Arms of Jesus” across a picture of the popular young Further Education Centre student, footballer and friend. A half-dozen people took the microphone, describing their memories and calling for unity.

Minister for Youth, Sports and Culture Mark Scotland, accompanied by Minster for Community Affairs Mike Adam, addressed the crowd, calling Justin “a bright young man heading in the right direction”, and lamenting that his death was necessary to bring the community together.

“People should never have to bury their children. This is what has to

happen to get this kind of turnout tonight. Why not when he was playing football?” he asked, pleading for young people to consider their choices.

“Please take a lesson,” he said,” asking people to stay away from Pedro Castle, pointing to the only hours-earlier duplicate drowning at 4:30 of 21-year-old Adam Rankine who jumped from the same cliffs near Pedro Castle.

A similar theme was repeated the next afternoon at Justin’s overflowing Walker’s Road Church of God funeral. As Pastor Felix Manzanares importuned the crowd to be unify in hope, George Town politician Alden McLaughlin asked that choices be made wisely.

“I speak as the father of two boys who have done the Pedro Bluff jump more than once,” he said, echoing dismay similar to Minister Adam, who earlier confessed to hearing the same from his family.

“Everything involves a degree of risk, but when the risk s so great that you may wind up dead, just don’t do it,” he said. “Death is final. You can’t come back.”

Under a 10-foot projection of photos from Justin’s life, including a final video of an impromptu classroom dance, the congregation, Justin’s family and 35 fellow members of Justin’s Cayman Athletic Sports Association football team wept openly.

Interment followed immediately, as darkness closed in and the family looked on, in Dixie Cemetery, George Town’s oldest.

NKorea holds rally, shows young Kim meeting troopsPYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — Pumping their fists and chanting, tens of thousands of North Koreans packed the snowy main square of the capital Tuesday to pledge their loyalty to new leader Kim Jong Un as the campaign to consolidate his power deepened.

State television also aired footage of Kim’s recent visit to an elite tank unit with family and historical ties that showed him interacting with ease with soldiers and carrying out inspections much like his father and grandfather did before him. Soldiers

cheered and chanted his name as Kim made an inaugural solo trip to provide “on-the-spot guidance” in the first official documentary of the new leader shown on North Korean TV.

The succession campaign to install the third-generation Kim as leader has hastened since Kim Jong Il died more than two weeks ago. He led the country for 17 years after the death of North Korea founder Kim Il Sung.

North Korea’s neighbors and the United States are keeping close watch on the younger Kim’s rise amid uncertainty about how the country

will manage a change of leadership during a time of sensitive negotiations over North Korea’s nuclear program. Pyongyang and Washington had been engaged in discussions about offering food aid in exchange for nuclear disarmament when Kim died on Dec. 17.

NATO to pull $30B worth of gear from AfghanistanKABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — As the drawdown of U.S. troops from Afghanistan steps up in 2012, NATO military planners are trying to figure out the logistics of how to ship out the massive quantities of alliance vehicles, weapons and other equipment from the mountainous landlocked country.

The operation requires the removal of $30 billion worth of state-of-the-art military gear by the end of 2014, when U.S. and other coalition troops are to end their combat role, a senior NATO official said Tuesday.

Most of the American equipment will be shipped to military depots in

the United States for refurbishment and then redistributed to bases around the country, but some assets will go to bases in Europe, primarily Germany, or in Asian nations such as South Korea.

“The stuff we have here is the very best the U.S. has ever produced,” the NATO official said. “It’s better than anything available (to military units) in the United States.”

He spoke on condition of anonymity because the planning for the equipment pullout is still in its initial stages.

Aside from the armored vehicles

and trucks, other gear that will be shipped out includes large quantities of armor, communications and optical equipment, and large crew-served artillery systems.

LONDON (AP) — Rupert Murdoch has begun the new year by setting up in a new field of communications — he’s started tweeting.

The media mogul, who is recovering from perhaps his most difficult year in the business, is posting on Twitter under the handle rupertmurdoch, spokeswoman Daisy Dunlop at News International confirmed Monday.

The account was opened over the New Year’s holiday, but many doubted its authenticity because Murdoch, 80, has generally tried to stay out of the spotlight as his media empire comes under increased scrutiny because of widespread phone hacking at his U.K. newspapers.

Murdoch faced harsh questioning in Parliament last summer and may face additional questions from the wide-ranging Leveson Inquiry into media practices later this year, but he makes no mention of these troubles in his tweets, which include the News Corp. chief’s New Year’s resolutions.

“My resolutions, try to maintain humility and always curiosity,” he tweets. “And of course diet!”

Murdoch had attracted more than 46,000 followers by Monday morning, just two days after he started tweeting. His wife Wendi Deng has also started tweeting — she’s wendi_deng.

She refers to the setbacks of the last year in her tweets: “A lot of bad things

happened in 2011 but I hope in 2012 we can put them all behind us and sail on to a bright future for everyone Wxx.”

Well, Christmas is over and I’m still in the loungeIf anyone visits they would really think it strange,

I’m as dry as a tree can possibly getIn the corner of the room where I’ve been set.

But, you know, for two weeks I was pretty as could be,My decor was beautiful for all to see,

Bright lights adorned me and I looked so prettyNow the season is over and all I feel is pity.

Cause I really enjoyed the family coming aroundA happier bunch of people could never be found

With piles of presents all around my baseIt was really a pleasure to watch each one’s face.

As they eagerly unwrapped their Christmas presentsOf jewellery, clothes, perfumes and ornaments,

And the food, my goodness, what a scrumptious fareAs each family member tried to eat their share.

Loads of turkey, pork, beef and ham,Plantain, potatoe salad, rice and beans, stuffing and yam,

And so much cake and Christmas pudding so sweetAll served with custard and brandy sauce what a treat.

Well, now it’s all over and the celebrations doneThe annual family get together has really been fun

But alas, I must go where all dry Christmas trees go,Recycled, together with other trees I know.

So merry mulch I am today, come and get your share.Gather up a bag or two if you really care.

Your plants will thrive and your trees will love it too -Better get there quickly or there’ll be no mulch for you.

iEditorial OPINIONS

“Tell me the old, old story” is an old hymn I sang when I was a boy – now that tells you

how old it is! One of the lines is “Tell me the story slowly, that I may take it in” and another, “Tell me the story often, for I forget so soon.”

The old, old, story I start this New Year is that people do not listen to common sense because it’s boring and not exciting. They do not listen to any advice because it will not happen to them. They do not take any notice of history because it never repeats itself. The first comment may be true but the last two are wrong. As for the first I guess common sense doesn’t exist at all.

I am, of course referring to the second death in less than a week off Pedro Castle. I said in an editorial that I thought it was unlikely people wouldn’t take any notice of warning signs but I was still shocked at someone deciding to jump from the rocks into the water so soon after Justin Henry did and died. That the same fate happened to 21 year old Adam Rankine, who perhaps thought it would be exciting, makes no sense to me but obviously made perfect sense to him. But at what cost? Life. To beat the elements may be exciting and you might win but when you don’t there is much suffering you leave behind. You are only a statistic in a newspaper but to your loved ones you are putting them through hell. Do you really want to do that? Does that make sense?

Judge Alexander Henderson, last Wednesday (28), criticised the RCIPS for the way they obtain descriptions of persons seen committing a crime and the way identification parades are held. He made these comments together with recommendations when he found Noval Barrett not guilty

of robbery and possession of an imitation firearm with intent to commit robbery after Barrett was charged with these offences. This was in connection with a robbery at the Tortuga Duty Free Liquour Store on Boilers Road in George Town on 17th August, 2010.

Both police witnesses gave conflicting statements. At the identity parade the officer told one of the witnesses they (the police) believed they had caught the man who did the robbery. The witness had also spent time in the police station lobby in the company of two people who were participating in the parade. Both of these actions by the RCIPS were wrong. The identity parade was not held until 14 days after the robbery. Judge Henderson said, “greater effort should be made to hold ID parades as soon as possible, since witness memories inevitably deteriorate over time.” He also recommended when police officers question a witness about a suspect, they consult a checklist of features so as to avoid any accidental omissions.

I thought that was common sense but obviously I am wrong as I have now discovered there is no such thing as common sense!

What does concern you and me is this is another case being lost by the Crown due to police recording methods and not following proper procedures. How many times has this happened? For over 20 years! Will the recommendations of Judge Henderson be implemented? In October our columnist, Georgina Wilcox, lamented on the 1996 Crime and Safety Survey asking, “why so little of the recommendations [of the Safety Survey] (if any) were implemented.”

This is now 2012. There may be no common sense but please don’t tell me the old, old story.

Our Eye OPINION

Life is full of ups, downs and with a few sideways thrown in too. When things go wrong or don’t go as planned, or when something happens to throw us off balance and doubt ourselves it can be tough to deal with. After all, we all want things to go well and to end up as “winners”. But life will always throw challenges at us, and we can’t control everything. Nor should we try. It’s not what happens to you but what you do with what happens to you that makes the difference. Here are easy ways that you can always come out on top.

We’re a bunch of contradictions: sometimes happy, sometimes sad, sometimes hopeful, sometimes pessimistic, sometimes childish, and sometimes mature. We also have a whole load of strengths and weaknesses that affect what we do and how we do it. Alas, we tend to put more focus on our weaknesses and not our strengths.

A strength is something that you do consistently well or at a near-perfect level of performance – it’s something you’re just able to do, you’re hard-wired to do it well and you get an inherent satisfaction from doing it. It could be tackling and solving complex problems, empathising with people, having a lively imagination or being able to make the perfect omelette.

Focusing on what you do well rather than what you’re not so good at makes all kinds of sense. When you look at what you’re not good

at you feel bad about yourself and your ability, but when you focus on and play to your strengths you’re guaranteed to get results, and can even eliminate any negative effect your weaknesses might have.

There was a man I worked with who hated public speaking and recognised that it was one of his weaknesses. He worked as an advertising executive and as he climbed the ladder he found he had to do more and more presentations – he’d stutter, freeze, forget his point and not perform at his best at all. But when we focused on his strengths we found that he had amazing social skills, an ability to establish great rapport with people in no time at all and had a fantastic sense of humour. Using those strengths he was able to connect easily with each person in his audience, enjoy himself a whole lot more and to deliver presentations that had fun, humour and warmth in them. He used his strengths to overwhelm his weaknesses and went from strength to strength himself.

Yes, there will be times when you can just head into something, do brilliantly at it and get the result you were hoping for (normally if you’re playing to your strengths), but other times you might blunder forwards, wing it and not get the result you wanted. Whatever challenges or opportunities you’re facing you’ll stand a much better chance of getting a great result if you set things up to succeed ahead

of time.So what exactly do you want to

happen? What solution, outcome or result would be great? Get really clear on the outcome you want from what’s facing you and how it would feel to get the outcome you’re looking for. Then start breaking it down - what can you do to set things up so that your desired outcome happens? What needs to be put in place? What will help to make what you want to happen, happen? And to ensure the best outcome, what are you willing to do?

Whatever faces you, it’s possible to get the result you want by being crystal clear about the kind of result you want and by putting effort into setting things up so that it happens. Look at this way: you’re infinitely more likely to get your most wanted result by putting

time or effort into setting things up ahead of time than if you don’t. It’s your choice.

What’s life all about? Is it getting a good job, getting married, feeling valued, having fun? It’s actually about different things to different people. I think it’s about doing the very best we can at everything we do, be the best for ourselves and for those we care about. Sometimes it’s a struggle and sometimes it’s a joy, but what is constant through it all is our capacity to learn, develop and grow. Humans have an unparalleled ability to learn and adapt, which is exactly why we’re able to do the best we can and find ways to have, do and be more.

That’s why everything you do takes you one step forwards and it’s only by doing one thing, then another and another that the most astounding things in our world came about. As Thomas Edison said while he was on his 207th prototype for the electric light bulb – “I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward.” He’s absolutely right. You’ll never get to 100% without going from 1% to 99% first.

In all that you do, whether it turns out how you wanted it to or not, there’s always the capacity for learning. That means that it’s all part of the process and everything you do and learn is an important step forwards.

There’s no such thing as losing, only learning and growing.

Never lose out againGeorgina [email protected]

Dody [email protected]

Dishin’ with Dody

Hopefully the stockings that were hung by the chimney with care are gently packed away and the New Year resolutions are still intact. Mike and I completed our “tree” packing task in about two minutes because this year we decided to become creative. Creativity is not always a good thing!

A few weeks before Thanksgiving I saw an incredible Christmas decoration that was hung from the ceiling. It was beautiful, it looked simple and I wanted it. Of course, I had to take it a step further by deciding it would take the place of our Christmas tree.

The thought of giving up my tree was not taken lightly. Over the years the decorations have been perfected on my unusual mermaid Christmas tree. (I do so love my mermaid tree.) Nevertheless, I decided to go with something different and attempted the “hanging tree”. I gathered fishing line, ribbons, ornaments and began creating…a mess. Everything kept twisting around each other, regardless of how much distance was put between them. I set everything aside, knowing time would make it all better.

A few days later I came back with renewed vigor. “I would form a wreath (of sorts) to place on the

ceiling then I could connect all the ornaments to it.” Brilliant!!! It didn’t work and was an incredible mess. By now we are well into December. I know that many families chop trees on Christmas Eve and decorate just for Christmas day. Not my family! We always resurrected ours the Friday after Thanksgiving and disassembled after the New Year. At this point I was feeling it was just too much trouble to bring everything down from the attic for only a couple of weeks. So more creativity…..

As I sat one evening pondering the situation, I realized what I was missing most were the lights from the tree. There was no festivity, no wonder, no dazzle, no Christmas without the glittering Christmas tree. So with (what must have been!) divine inspiration I began

stacking the gifts in a “tree” shape. The ornaments I had been using for my masterpiece were hung (alright, taped) onto the “tree.” I added the lights…and…it was glorious!!!

The true beauty of this new addition to old tradition was the fact that once all the presents had been dispensed, we were left with only a few ornaments and a strand of lights. All easily put away within two minutes but, next year we are having a real tree.

I am sending you a recipe later for another Christmas tree that is great for an appetiser. I know it is a bit late for this Christmas, but taking the basic idea, with a little creativity you can make many things, perhaps an Easter basket, a heart, a top hat, depending on the occasion. After all, creativity can be a wonderful thing.

I wrote an article last May on the same subject titled “Why do we need to control anger?” and I have been prompted to delve even more into the subject as I feel it is very important.

How many times have you lost control of yourself when you’re angry? Did you do or say something you regretted over time?

The answer is probably ‘yes’ as anger is a completely normal, and usually healthy, human emotion.

But most of us have problems with anger. Do you know how to gain control of your anger, instead of letting it control you? It’s not an easy thing to achieve, especially when you are provoked into such situations. Anger can make you feel as though you’re at the mercy of an unpredictable and powerful emotion. The instinctive, natural way to express anger is to respond aggressively. Anger is a natural, adaptive response to threats; it inspires powerful, often aggressive, feelings and behaviors, which allow us to fight and to defend ourselves when we are attacked. A certain amount of anger, therefore, is necessary to our survival. On the other hand, we can’t physically lash out at every person or object that irritates or annoys us; laws, social norms, and common sense place limits on how far our anger can take us.

If you are facing with this situation next time, you can try out these 8 simple steps. It works for me and it could work for you, too

Step 1: Have an outletMany people lash out at those around

them when they get angry. Frequently, the person being lashed out at lashes back and the angry feelings spiral upward. Venting can help relieve anger but the venting should not be directed at another person; it’s better to lash out at an inanimate object like a pillow or a punching bag. Or you can scream out loud in an empty room.

Step 2: Identify what makes you upset

Start with identifying what upsets your feelings or emotions. Pull yourself

aside from everything you are doing or the anger situation you are in, then take a deep breath and clear your mind. Think, what brought you into this situation. You need to know what is wrong in order to correct it.

Step 3: Use them as a stop signalWhen you are done with Step 2,

you’d probably already knew what made you angry. You might not have the complete clear idea of it, but at least you have some ideas.

Use these as stop signs for your anger. You’re upset because the little voices inside your head are telling yourself upsetting things. This in return causes a stir in your feelings, therefore resulting in anger. Stop all these little voices from talking within yourself, and you’ll be able to think independently and not being influenced by them and the situation.

Step 4: Tell yourself positive things

It’s important to think positive. You can counteract your upsetting thoughts with framing your mind to have a positive self-message. Tell yourself something nice that will make you feel better. For instance: “this anger feeling is only temporary and I don’t want to say or do something stupid which I will regret for my actions later.”

Put the brakes on your feelings. Tell yourself to slow down and take it easy.

Step 5: Make yourself clearClarify the situation for yourself.

Ask yourself, “What is really going on in this situation?” You can then feel disappointed with the situation but not enraged at the people who are creating it.

Step 6: Think of constructive goals

Try to set more realistic goals for yourself in regard to the problem situation that you are in. Ask yourself:

“What are the alternative solutions that I use to resolve this situation?”

Be specific as possible, and firm: “What can you do to change this

situation?” List out the constructive options that you have in mind in which to reach your goals. Ask yourself: “What constructive actions can I take to reach my goals?” Finally, choose a constructive option to reach your goal and act fast on it.

Step 7: Have a break - count to ten

Once the initial burst of anger has been released many people feel much calmer and able to approach the situation making them angry in a more pragmatic fashion. Most people have heard the advice to count to ten when really angry. The reason this advice is so well-known is because it is very effective. It is also helpful to take deep breaths while counting and to count slowly.

If you’re still angry after counting to ten it’s a good idea to count backwards. Another way to take a break is to take a walk around the block. Taking a walk has the same effect as counting to ten -- it helps to diffuse the situation and give things a little bit of time to cool down.

Step 8: Visualise a calm place and listen to music:Positive visualisation is another well-trusted method for relieving anger. Many people are able to remove themselves from the anger-inducing situation by visualising a calm or beautiful place. Playing a favourite piece of music of yours is also helpful.

Everyone gets angry at times, but the important thing is: “What can you do to overcome this situation?”

Gain control of your anger, rather than letting it control you.

Christmas came early for 200 families in Grand Cayman this year when on Friday, December 23, baskets filled with groceries were delivered to these families by the members and friends of the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens and employees of Camana Bay and Regatta Office Park.

Ed Semans, Senior Property Manager for Dart Realty (Cayman) Ltd. explained that Dart Realty wanted to give many families in the Cayman Islands who were struggling to make ends meet, a memorable Christmas, and this was possible by partnering with the LCTG in the Christmas basket initiative once again this year. Colleen Cummings, Assistant Property Manager for Dart Realty, agreed and said that delivering the baskets, talking to the families and seeing the smiles on their faces was a very satisfying experience.

Lion Belinda Blessitt Vincent, President of the LCTG expressed her thanks on behalf of the Club. She said that this project would not have been possible without the altruistic spirit of Camana Bay and Regatta Office Park and she hoped

that this partnership will continue into the New Year. “The happy faces and positive responses from those persons who received baskets said it all”, she said. “This is really what Christmas is, she said, “sharing and caring.”

Over the next 18 months, LIME’s existing 2G technology will be upgraded to EDGE, and then in numerous locations LIME will be deploying 4G technology.

Anthony Ritch, General Manager for Lime, said “4G is about performance that was not previously available. Usual ‘edge speed ’provided throughout the network is between 250 to 300 kb per second. The new 4G technology will take the processing speed capacity from 300 kb per second to 21 mg per second.

“Although the 4G technology will immediately be of interest to the ‘smart phone’ users, the benefits of this technology will extend to Companies and the Corporate Business Community.”

Downloads on 3G can take between two and three minutes but with 4G can be as fast as half a second.

Directory FailsLIME Probes Directory Assistance FailureTad Stoner

LIME yesterday said it was investigating the breakdown of its international directory assistance service, malfunctioning for the last week and forcing callers to find alternate sources for overseas telephone numbers.

“We think it’s a technical issue, and I need to investigate what has happened,” said LIME’s Kingston-based Customer Experience Improvement Manager Steve Hurt.

He said two teams were probing why agents were not answering inquiries to the international division of 411. One group, Mr Hurt said, was “looking at where calls from Cayman are being routed”. The other was examining “why waiting times online were so long”.

Users have complained of waiting as long as 10 minutes for an operator before abandoning the effort. One operator told iNews yesterday that the directory service had been “offline for some time, more than a week”.

Both international and local assistance services operate from three regional call centres: 550 staff operate the Kingston office 24 hours per day; 165 are employed in St Lucia; and 65 more in Montego Bay.

Inquiries from Cayman go primarily to Kingston, Mr Hurt said, on a system that routes calls to unengaged operators. Local spokesman Daniel Tatum suggested that “deployment of a new system with a great deal of intelligence”, may have temporarily affected the service.

Three Hurt After Car FlippedStaff Reporter

One person was taken to hospital and two treated by paramedics after a car flipped and smashed into a house.

The accident happened on Monday night just after 7pm on Bodden Town Road heading towards East End.

One of the people in the car was taken to George Town Hospital but was discharged after receiving treatment for a back injury.

Two other people were treated at the scene of the crash, near Moon Bay Condos, but their injuries were not serious.

Police Link Nightclub AssaultsPaul Kennedy

Two separate assaults outside the same nightclub may well be linked, according to police.

Officers were called to Elements Nightclub on West Bay Road in the early hours of Saturday morning after a female tourist was assaulted.

A short time later a man, who lives on the Cayman Islands, was also attacked.

The woman was taken to hospital with head wounds but was released later that day.

The man refused to co-operate with police.Police officers are examining CCTV footage to try and

identify the man responsible.

Businessman Robbed at Gunpoint Kevin CrearyA businessman carrying his day’s takings was robbed at gunpoint as he made his way home.

According to reports received by the police, three gunmen confronted a man as he prepared to enter his home in West Bay.

The robbers jumped the 44-year-old as he was carrying his daily takings home.

All three suspects were said to be wearing dark clothing, two of them appeared to be carrying firearms.

The bag with the money was grabbed from the businessman, soon after.

One of the thugs hit the businessman on the head with a firearm.

After taking the cash, the suspected robbers ran off, firing a gunshot in the direction of the victim.

The business received treatment for a head injury

inflicted by the weapon but he was not shot.

Meanwhile police are continuing to investigate a daring robbery attempt at a city bank.

At some time over the weekend thieves tried to tunnel their way into the Butterfield Bank at the Compass Centre.

Although they managed to dig a hole they did not get into the vault and fled empty handed.

In another incident, an attempted robber was locked up in refrigerator at the Paradise Restaurant at the Georgetown Waterfront.

According to reports, a man who tried to rob the Paradise restaurant was locked up in a refrigerator by members of the staff.

The robbery was foiled by when the man was discovered and

securely locked inside the refrigerator by staffers until the police arrived.

Face of Daybreak Dropped from StationPaul Kennedy

Executives at Cayman Islands Television have ditched long-running host Sheena Hurlstone from it’s morning magazine show.

Ms Hurlstone has been the face of Daybreak and has worked at the station for more than 17 years.

It is understood the move to drop the well-known presenter was due to cost-cutting.

She said: “It is surprising and disappointing that a decision was taken by the station to make me redundant after 17 years as a devoted and loyal employee.

“I was not in this for the pay-check. I loved Daybreak and I felt it had become part of my life. I loved going out and meeting so many wonderful people.

“I felt I was not only part of building the show but also part of rebuilding the show after Ivan.

“It is going to be so painful not to see everyday people who have become my friends but I’m sure we’ll stay in touch.

“But moving forward I need to see what opportunities are available and grab them with both hands.

“It is indeed not the most opportune time for a dedicated Caymanian to be made redundant in this very difficult economic climate. However, I do wish the station well and I intend to use this as an opportunity to open a new chapter in my life.

“I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the many viewers, supporters, and clients who have been instrumental in the growth and popularity of the show, which I have hosted and produced for so many years. I look forward to exploring what options may be available and to moving forward with the support of my family and, most importantly, my son.”

CITN management said they would not comment directly on personal matters but General Manager Michael Martin said: “Sheena Hurlstone is no longer wwith CITN.

“We wish her the best of luck in her future endeavours,”

It is understood that Hurlstone has been targeted for redundancy as a result of her being one of the highest paying staff members at the station.

The TV firm has not yet revealed who will host Daybreak or what the future plans are for the show.

CITN is believed to be undergoing another review of news programming, including the format of the morning show, before the end of the year.

Meanwhile an international TV company that provides sport and programmes to nearly 50 countries may be relocating to the Cayman Islands.

Iceman Production, which provides sports marketing services

and television programmes, is planning to locate here, said Roger Piggot, chief executive officer, producer and director.

“The opportunities are enormous,” he said. “What I love is the culture; it’s safe, laid back.”

The operation was originally going to move to the US Virgin Islands.

But in a dramatic U-turn they now say they are planning talks with the Government within the next week.

Mr Piggot added: “We are going to come in, bring our world-class editing and production facilities into Cayman.

“The Cayman Islands will be recognised in the global sports market for broadcast as a supplier of international programming.”

Former Gov. Jack Faces Damages Claim Continued from page 1

The trial is set for two days, Thursday and Friday, but, while listed as “in chambers”, the court “has indicated it has not made up its mind,” Mr Hogarth said.

“If people turn up on Thursday morning, the judge will decide how to handle it,” he said, suggesting that sufficient public interest in the case would weigh into Lord Justice Moses’ determination.

“That ‘in chambers’ does not necessarily exclude the public,” Mr Hogarth said.

Neither former Governor Jack nor Mr Bridger are expected to attend the trial, while court documents name only the “Acting Police Commissioner”, without specifying David George or James Smith, both of whom presided over the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) during the tenure of Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) Martin Bridger.

Mr George arrived in the Cayman Islands as part of the same Metropolitan Police team as Mr Bridger in the autumn of 2007, summoned by Governor Jack at the behest of Mr Kernohan in pursuit of a “national security” investigation into alleged RCIPS leaks to a local newspaper.

Both the RCIPS and newspaper proprietor Desmond Seales were cleared of any wrongdoing, but Mr Bridger claimed “other matters” required further investigation.

Mr Kernohan and Detective Chief Superintendent John Jones were suspended the following March, ostensibly to clear a path for Mr Bridger, who subsequently placed both officers under investigation. Meanwhile, the SIO lodged four minor charges -- ultimately dismissed -- against Deputy Police Commissioner Rudolph Dixon. Mr Jones was eventually exonerated and reinstated, while Mr Kernohan was sacked for disobeying gubernatorial orders to return from the UK where he was caring for his ailing father. Mr

Kernohan was finally exonerated on 1 May 2009.

Mr Bridger left the Cayman Islands after the court forced him and his Operation Tempura team to apologise to Justice Alexander Henderson, arrested for misconduct, but awarded

$1.27 million in late 2008 after the court overturned the arrest.

Estimates of the total cost of Operation Tempura ---- salaries, expenses, rental accommodations, transport -- run as high as $10 million.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Jerry Angelo was fired as the Chicago Bears’ general manager Tuesday following a team collapse marked by injuries to Jay Cutler and Matt Forte and a drug scandal involving receiver Sam Hurd.

Angelo (pictured) had been on the job 11 years, a stretch in which the Bears reached one Super Bowl and advanced to another NFC championship game. An 8-8 record this season, a questionable draft record and an inability to fill big holes, particularly on offense, led to his ouster.

His dismissal comes after a wild season in which the Bears at one point seemed a lock to make the playoffs. A five-game losing streak, however, spoiled a 7-3 start and kept Chicago out of the playoffs for the fourth time in five years.

Cutler broke his right thumb trying to help make a tackle following an interception during a win over San Diego on Nov. 20. The Bears didn’t win again until the season-finale at Minnesota on Sunday.

It didn’t help that Forte sprained a ligament in his right knee against Kansas City on Dec. 4, leaving the offense without its two best players. Those would be blows for any team, but they were crippling for Chicago. Throw in Hurd’s arrest on federal drug charges in mid-December, and what looked like a promising season

turned into a disaster for the team and organization.

The injuries exposed a glaring lack of depth as the Bears tumbled out of playoff contention.

The low point might have been the loss at Denver when Marion Barber ran out of bounds late in regulation. That stopped the clock, giving the Broncos enough time to tie the score. If that weren’t enough, he lost a fumble in overtime, helping set up the winning field goal.

Meanwhile, backup quarterback Caleb Hanie was a bust filling in for Cutler, going 0-4 as the starter before the Bears turned to Josh McCown.

Chicago claimed Kyle Orton off waivers after Cutler went down, but Kansas City had priority and got him. The Bears then brought in Josh McCown, and Angelo left himself open to second-guessing when he decided not to go after Donovan McNabb once Minnesota let him go.

The lack of a reliable backup quarterback, continuing issues on the offensive line and the inability to land a top-tier receiver increased the heat on the general manager.

Roy Williams struggled to hold onto the ball and get open in his first season with the Bears after a disappointing run in Dallas. Hurd, another Cowboys import, was quickly waived after being charged with trying to set up a drug-

dealing network following his arrest with more than a pound of cocaine.

The arrest only compounded Angelo’s problems. Now, Angelo’s out and the Bears are picking up the pieces.

For all the criticism, Angelo did have successes. The Bears won four division championships, including the 2006 team’s run to the Super Bowl and last year’s trip to the NFC championship game. He traded for Cutler and signed Julius Peppers. But he also had a spotty draft record that included such high-profile disappointments as Cedric Benson and Rex Grossman.

Former first-rounder Chris Williams has mostly struggled, and first-round pick Gabe Carimi missed most of his rookie season with a right knee injury. Angelo also was unable to find a top receiver, through the draft, a trade or free agency.

Chicago didn’t anyone ready to step in when a solid but aging line that helped the Bears reach the playoffs in 2005 and 2006 began to go downhill.

Offensive coordinator Mike Martz called for deep drops and Cutler took repeated poundings. That changed after Cutler made his feelings clear. The Bears started getting the ball out of his hands quicker, handing the ball off more to Forte and piling up the wins. But just when it looked as if they had saved their season, everything came apart.

Jeff Fisher interviews with DolphinsDAVIE, Fla. (AP) — Jeff Fisher landed at the Miami Dolphins’ complex on Tuesday. Now the question is whether the Dolphins will land Fisher.

A person familiar with the team’s coaching search said Fisher was interviewing for the job. The person confirmed the interview to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Dolphins hadn’t commented.

Fisher (pictured) arrived aboard owner Stephen Ross’ helicopter. He’s believed to be the Dolphins’ top choice, and Ross is willing to pay big money, but competition from other NFL teams may be fierce.

The Buccaneers and Rams fired their coaches on Monday, increasing to five the number of top vacancies. The Rams’ vice president and chief operating officer, Kevin Demoff, happens to be the son of Fisher’s agent, Marvin Demoff.

Fisher coached the Titans franchise for 17 years and led Tennessee to the 2000 Super Bowl. He stepped down a year ago as the league’s longest-tenured coach, saying he needed a break, and sat out the 2011 season.

The Dolphins fired Tony Sparano with three games to go in his fourth season as their coach. Interim coach Todd Bowles was interviewed

on Monday.Fisher has a career record of 142-

120 (.542). He led his team to at least 12 wins four times. He coached more games for one franchise than all but six coaches, all Hall of Famers.

However, his most recent playoff victory came in January 2004. His most recent winning record was in 2008 when the Titans squandered the No. 1 seed in the AFC by losing in the divisional round.

The Dolphins (6-10) missed the playoffs for the ninth time in the past 10 years. The losing season was their third in a row, the franchise’s longest such stretch since the 1960s.

Page 21: 04-01-2012

The way the Green Bay Packers blew through the regular season, it would be foolish to pick against them repeating as Super Bowl champions.

Yet they aren’t on the hottest streak nor playing the best football as January rolls around. And as the Steelers, Giants and, yes, the Packers have proven in recent years, being a wild card isn’t an overbearing burden, so don’t dismiss Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Detroit or Atlanta entirely.

New England, the top seed in the AFC with a 13-3 record, and New Orleans, No. 3 in the NFC, haven’t lost in the second half of the schedule. Like Green Bay (15-1), both have dynamic, sometimes unstoppable offenses led by magnificent quarterbacks, bolstered by a deep and dangerous group of receivers.

All three also have so-so defenses that often require Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Tom Brady to win shootouts. That’s a difficult way to prosper in the postseason, particularly when playing against a rugged, versatile defense such as the 49ers, Ravens and Texans possess.

“A lot of it is working on what we need to work on; working on things that have been a problem for us, that if they come up again we need to handle better,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said, not mentioning in particular a penchant for

falling into deep holes. New England rallied from 17-0 and 21-0 deficits to win its past two games.

Remember, also, that New England has lost its past three postseason games, including at home to the Ravens and Jets the past two years.

Behind Brees’ record-setting performances, the Saints soared past all eight opponents at home, but if they can handle the Lions next Saturday night in the Superdome, then they must head to San Francisco. And if they get by the

formidable Niners, who rode a stingy, big-play defense to a 13-3 mark, a date at potentially frigid Lambeau Field is likely.

That is, if the Giants don’t start partying like it’s 2007. They were seeded fifth that year, but closed the regular season with a close loss to unbeaten New England. Then the Giants knocked off division winners Tampa Bay, Dallas and Green Bay before shocking the Patriots for the championship.

New York won three of its last four, including impressive defensive efforts in wins over the Jets and Cowboys to grab the NFC East title. Defense was an issue for much of the season, but with the pass rush suddenly reborn, the Giants can be dangerous.

“Different guys, different teams. I’d love to have the same ending as the ‘07 team,” Giants guard Chris Snee said. “We certainly have the capability of doing that, as we have shown. I’m happy just to be in the playoffs. We’ll take it from there. I don’t spend too much time reminiscing about that glorious time in our life.”

Baltimore, like New Orleans and Green Bay, went 8-0 at home and is

an entirely different team on the road (4-4). Still, with some help from outside — ironically, the AFC North rival Steelers are the most likely to provide it — the Ravens might not have to leave the Inner Harbor to get to Indianapolis in February.

Ah, the Steelers. The loss of running back Rashard Mendenhall to a torn right knee ligament is particularly damaging for a veteran team that has been to the Super Bowl three times in the past six seasons, winning twice.

Pittsburgh was the only contender not to lose to a weak team, falling twice to Baltimore, and to San Francisco and Houston. The Steelers won seven of their last eight as their supposedly aged defense looked fresh and frugal.

“We have a lot of veterans who know what January football is all about,” said safety Ryan Clark. “Now’s the time to go play it.”

David Beckham has decided not to join Paris Saint-Germain for family reasons, according to reports in France.

The former England captain, 36, had been widely linked with a move to the Qatari-owned French club but could now extend his spell in the United States with Los Angeles Galaxy. “It’s over. It’s a shame,” PSG sporting director Leonardo told L’Equipe.

“But the welfare of his family in LA, the wish not not to change everything in his life, weighed heavily.”

Beckham has been weighing up his options since helping LA Galaxy win the MLS Cup with a 1-0 win over Houston Dynamo.

Joining PSG would have resulted

in the midfielder joining forces again with newly appointed PSG manager Carlo Ancelotti and sporting director Leonardo, having worked with both men at AC Milan during loan spells in 2009 and 2010.

But the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star looks like remaining in the US following discussions with his family and business partner Simon Fuller.

It is understood Beckham’s wife, Victoria, and four children feel settled in California and are happy to stay.

Beckham’s contract with Galaxy expired on 31 December but the club and Major League Soccer (MLS) have now offered him a one-year rolling deal.

Crucially, the new contract would

include dispensation for Beckham to be a part of the Great Britain football team at the 2012 London Olympics, should he be selected.

Beckham likely not to move to France

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said referee Lee Probert cost his side victory in the 2-1 defeat at Fulham.

The Gunners looked set to clinch three points at Craven Cottage until the home side staged a late comeback.

Wenger was unhappy with the decision to send off defender Johan Djourou for two bookable offences and felt his team should have been awarded a penalty.

“The referee influenced the game in completely the wrong way, in my opinion,” said Wenger. The Gunners now lie fifth in the Premier League, one point behind Chelsea, following their fifth away defeat of the season.

Djourou was dismissed on 78 minutes for pulling back Bobby Zamora but Wenger thought the Swiss international was harshly treated and accused Fulham of trying to get the defender sent off.

“When Djourou got the first yellow card, they tried every time to get him a second yellow and the referee was naive enough to give it,” said Wenger.

“I saw it coming, you know. I do not need to make stories for newspapers. I tell you the game I have seen. I don’t care about the rest.”

Wenger also thought his side should have had a first-half penalty.

Asked if Gervinho has been fouled inside the area by Philippe Senderos, Wenger said: “200%, but we know we don’t get penalties.”

Arsenal dominated the first half but only had Laurent Koscielny’s header to show for their efforts.

Fulham then sealed victory with goals from Steve Sidwell and Zamora in the final five minutes.

“In the second half, we were tired in the last 10 minutes,” added Wenger. “We lost the game because we were down to 10 men.”

Wenger’s anger contrasted with the joy of Fulham boss Martin Jol, who experienced victory over his managerial rival at the ninth attempt.

“I am relieved after any game when we get the points on the board and against a top side like Arsenal,” Jol said. “We did it before against Liverpool and Chelsea so we have some players with excellent quality who can make the difference as you saw.”

The Dutchman laughed off Wenger’s suggestion that Fulham tried to get Djourou sent off.

“The only thing I did was put Kerim Frei on the flank. He is an exciting player and he wanted to go one-v-one

all the time.“That was probably the problem for

Djourou. He probably could have had a second booking before that, to be fair.”

Speaking about his side’s victory, Jol added: “It was amazing. We played ever so well in the second half. Sometimes if you can’t score at the right times you end up with a draw but I think in the end the win was deserved.”

Continued from page 24As the American’s gathered pace it looked as though their size and strength would swamp the Cayman U21’s and indeed the Panther forward pack dominated the set piece. The Cayman front row struggled against a far more experienced front 3 and the Cayman lineout misfired time and time again especially after hooker Daniel McGrath was substituted after only 20 minutes still suffering from the ill effects of food poisoning picked up over Christmas break.

The Panthers scored again to take the lead before the half with a Dillon Sauerwein converted try to take the game to 5-10.

Cayman soon responded with another kickable penalty from Cribb to bring the game to within 2 points but by this stage Cayman were wondering why they did not have a more comfortable lead. The strong winds were plaguing Cribb’s kicking and with the Panther’s seemingly willing to give ample opportunity for shots a goal with a host of penalties within their own half the Panthers knew that they were lucky to have the lead after 40 minutes.

The Panthers extended their lead further in the second half as Tristan Gray crossed the line out wide after a long period of Panther phase play against some dogged Caymanian defense to take the score line to 8-15.

With the heat taking its toll on all

the players fresh Caymanian legs were brought on to change the tide and bolster the Cayman pack and back line. The Changes did the trick as Cayman again pressured the Panthers in their own half and were rewarded yet again with a kickable penalty which Cribb slotted to take the score to 11-15. The Caymanian momentum continued to build as

the seconds ticked away and once again the quick feet of Joel Clark broke the Panther’s defensive ranks and the crowd went into rapture as it looked as though Jeffrey Robinson had scored a decisive try close to the posts to once again take the lead for Cayman but the try was disallowed and a penalty was awarded to the Panthers as Robinson had made 2 movements on the ground to cross the line.

The call was a heartbreaker for the Caymanians and it looked as though the game would end with a score line in favor of the American’s but the never say die attitude of the young Cayman team saw out the a tense final 2 minutes as a scrum close to the Panther’s try line was secured by the Cayman forwards and a dummy pass from Robbie Cribb sent him through to put the winning points on the board 16-15. The missed conversion would have given some breathing space for the Cayman team but in the end it wasn’t needed as some feverish defense from the Caymanians wound down the clock and the final whistle was blown.

The Cayman Islands Rugby Football Union continued a rich vein of form against their bigger, more powerful American neighbours on Monday, 2 January 2012 (having recently triumphed over the USA South Men’s VII’s team in Barbados 19-14 on November 12 2011 in Barbados) with a slim 16-15 win over the USA South U21 Panthers on home soil.

The USA South U21 Panthers

arrived on island via cruise early Monday morning with the cream of rugby talent from the Southeast United States. The U21 Panthers, thought to contain as many as eight former junior Eagles as well as a number of top prospects looking to be nominated to the full USA Junior World Trophy squad for 2012 were obvious favorites to beat the young Caymanians.

USA Rugby South is the territorial union for teams playing in the Southern United States. It is one of seven union’s that govern specific regions of USA Rugby and is comprised of the North Carolina Rugby Football Union, the Georgia Rugby Union, the Palmetto Rugby Union, the Deep South Rugby Football Union, the Florida Rugby Football Union and the MidSouth Rugby Football Union!

Kicking off in front of a large crowd at the South Sound rugby pitch the Cayman U21’s started strongly and had the first opportunity at points when awarded a kickable penalty but with strong southern winds the usually sure footed Robbie Cribb pushed the ball wide. Cribb later made up for the mistake when full back Joel Clark and inside centre Mike Wilson made inroads against a flailing Panther backline to bring up the opening try of the game but Cribb was again wayward with the conversion to make the score 5-0. The Panthers quickly responded with a kickable penalty of their own from Nick Vidger to make the score line 5-3.
