HANDLING TEMPTATION

Page 4: 02 17-13-am - handling temptation

TEMPTATION

• James 1:12 indicates that we will all face temptation.• Truly it is every person’s experience

that we all face temptation.• The key to handling those

temptations is found in the rest of chapter one of James.

I. UNDERSTAND THE SOURCE OF

TEMPTATION

Page 6: 02 17-13-am - handling temptation

I. UNDERSTAND THE SOURCE OF TEMPTATION

• GOD DOES NOT TEMPT US - James 1:13 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.

• WE ARE TEMPTED BY OUR OWN DESIRES - James 1:14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.

• DESIRE LEADS TO SIN AND SIN LEADS TO DEATH - James 1:15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

• GOD GIVES ONLY GOOD GIFTS - James 1:16-18 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. {17} Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. {18} Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of first fruits of His creatures.

II. ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUR OWN

ACTIONS

Page 8: 02 17-13-am - handling temptation

II. ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR ACTIONS

• CONTROL YOUR EMOTIONS - James 1:19-20 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; {20} for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

• CONTROL YOUR ACTIONS - James 1:21a Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness,

• MEEKLY ACCEPT GOD'S WORD - James 1:21b receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

III. KEEP BUSY DOING GOD'S

WORK

Page 10: 02 17-13-am - handling temptation

III. KEEP BUSY DOING GOD'S WORK• BE A DOER OF THE WORD James 1:22-24 But be doers of the

word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. {23} For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; {24} for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.

• BE A DOER OF THE WORK - James 1:25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.

• CONTROL YOUR TONGUE - James 1:26 If anyone among you thinks he is reli gious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one's reli gion is useless.

• HELP THE NEEDY - James 1:27 Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble,

IV. KEEP YOURSELF

UNSPOTTED FROM THE

WORLD

Page 12: 02 17-13-am - handling temptation

IV. KEEP YOURSELF UNSPOTTED• James 1:27 and to keep oneself unspotted from

the world.• Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this

world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

• 1 Peter 1:14-15 as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; 15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,
