Smart Metering Promises New Efficiencies and Applications
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is a key enabler for meeting the present and future
demands on our electrical grid. Smart Meters provide rich actionable data sets which enable ahost of new functionality to support both the utility and the consumer.
Consumer Engagement:Smart meters enable consumers to actively participate in planning and
deciding how to use electricity in order to moderate their consumption and monthly utility bill. With
a full, high performance AMI solution prepared for new electricity pricing models, consumers can
check the exact usage and price of electricity at any given time and optimize their energy usage.
Load Optimization:Demand Response (DR) and Direct Load Control (DLC) refer broadly to a
utilitys ability to entice or directly moderate consumer behavior in an effort to limit peak load and
manage demand in the grid.
Data Analysis and Outage Notification:AMI meters provide utilities with a wealth of previously
inaccessible data. An AMI solution, with reliable and pervasive communications, enables utilities
to receive last gasp alarms and provides rapid isolation of power outages. Voltage level at the
consumer premises is another example where varying conditions in the grid and varying
consumption rates pose challenges for guaranteed delivery. AMI data helps utilities deliver
consistent voltage to a household or business. Furthermore, utilities will be better able to better
balance and configure the grid in an effort to more precisely deliver the required load across allcustomer circuits.
Feeder Optimization:Correlating rich AMI data sets from the customer premises with
performance data from wireless sensors in the distribution feeder, utilities can more rapidly
address anomalies at the transformer and line feeder network and address potential issues in the
grid before they happen.

A Smart Wireless Solution for a Smarter Grid
On-Ramp Wireless provides a wireless solution that delivers the lowest cost and most efficient network in theindustry. The On-Ramp Total Reach Network AMI solution provides meter to cash functionality with the
industrys best overall performance. The Powered by On-Ramp AMI ecosystem includes many of the leadingmeter manufacturers and meter data management solutions.
As an example, the On-Ramp Total Reach Network supports the following:
On-Ramp Meter Communications Module (eMCM) integrated in ANSI C12.18 residential and commercial/industrial
meters from GE, Vision Metering, and others. A GE meter is shown below, in Figure 1.
On-Ramp eMCM integrated in IEC meters from GE and others.
Pre-integration with meter data management systems (MDMS) from ElectSolve (illustrated in Figure 2)
and Ecologic Analytics.
On-Ramp Wireless standards-based head-end solution supports integration with any industry
standard MDM or OMS system, as well as data analytics applications.
Key System Features
In addition to meeting or exceeding all AMI selection criteria noted in the previous section, the On-Ramp AMI
solution stands out with results:
Richest AMI Data Model:Purpose-built for AMI, the On-Ramp Total Reach Network provides the bestmeter coverage and highest system capacity in the industry. Optimized two-way communications
also greatly enhances demand response requirements to simultaneously read and control metersand provide efficient meter updates that dont affect daily operations performance.
Excellent Deployment Flexibility:The On-Ramp Total Reach Network is simple to plan and quick to
install. The network can typically be deployed at a rate of 300 square miles of coverage per day and, contrary to mesh systems, devices in newly covered zones can be activated immediately. The On-
Ramp Wireless managed service enables deployment of the end-to-end solution in a matter of weeksvs. months. This means that the benefits of the solution start showing up with the first meter installed.
Fastest ROI:The On-Ramp Total Reach Network, due to its high capacity and wide area coverage,
automates more meters on minimal infrastructure than any competing technology. The key driversof this success are relatively small numbers of infrastructure points, simple network architecture, simple network and meter management, and low site and backhaul costs.

Multi-application Support:An On-Ramp Total Reach Network can easily support DistributionAutomation applications over the same network that supports AMI. This limits network complexity
and drives down the network payback time significantly for a multi-use network. For moreinformation on On-Ramp Distribution Automation applications, see the related solutions brief.
Broad Ecosystem:Participating in the Powered by On-Ramp developer program, leading companies
such as GE, Vision Metering, Schweitzer Engineering Labs (SEL), GridSense, ElectSolve, and EcologicAnalytics are actively developing and deploying On-Ramp Total Reach Network solutions for utility
customers. More information on the Powered by On-Ramp program, On-Ramp Reference Platform,
and related integration specifications can be found at www.onrampwireless.com.
