Board of Governors General Information President’s Letter

Dear Fellow Members,

Another year has passed and while we remember those who have left us, we also move forward, with confidence, to a wonderful New Year at the Neighborhood Club.

Our staff is ready to offer superior service and superb cuisine for your dining pleasure during our long winter nights. Entertainment has scheduled many inventive and fun evenings for you to enjoy. Check the flyers for these events and consider bringing a guest or two to enjoy the “Neighborhood Club” experience. There is, being planned, some special comfort food nights with a lesser dress code. These evenings have been suggested by many and your Club is responding.

Recently, our Board of Governors approved a decrease in the initiation fee to $100. for the next 100 new members. This is in conjunction with our coming 100th Anniversary. Now is the time to encourage your friends and family to join.

Thank you to all who have aided our staff member Kim Moran, who recently lost her husband. If you care to offer assistance, call Marty and he will tell you how. Kim and her three young children will be forever grateful.

In closing, I offer to each of you, best wishes for a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Yours truly,C. Robert FoyPresident

Message from The General Manager

To all of our Members,

The holiday season at the Club is always special. I would like to again to thank the members and staff who helped decorate the Club for the holidays. They did a wonderful job transforming the Club into a holiday wonderland. Job well done!

Breakfast with Santa was a huge hit, and Joel created a breakfast buffet which everyone raved about. Santa visited and gave out presents to the girls and boys; what a blast!

The Christmas Dance was attended by nearly 100 members and their guests. Tom Pitman led the festivities with music for dancing. Joel and his staff created a spectacular menu that all enjoyed!

We have some great events in store for you this month, starting with the New Years Eve Celebration and ending with Chef/Managers Night. Please join us for both of these fantastic Club events.

Lastly, I want to thank all members of the Club for supporting the staff. Words cannot express how proud I am for the outpouring of support from the membership; it has been truly amazing.

We hope that you enjoyed a wonderful holiday season with us and your families. I wish you all a healthy and happy New Year!

I look forward to seeing everyone at the Club in 2013.

Best Wishes,

Marty

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEEThe year 2012 seemed to have flown by. Thank you to Club members who have sponsored new members. We can all enjoy The Neighborhood Club experience together with new and long-time friends during 2013.

Frequently asked question:Q. I would like information on the classes of membership in the Club. There seem to be so many that it is easy to be confused in distinguishing between classes. Can you clarify the classes?A. We agree that the definitions of the classes of membership can be confusing. At the Club annual meeting in June, 2012, a proposal to simplify the classes as defined in the Club by-laws was approved.

The classes that have full use of the Club are: Class A – Husband and wife and Class B – Unmarried, widowed or divorced person over the age of twenty-one. Most Club members are Class A or Class B.

Class C– Officers (and spouses) on active duty in USA armed forces and Class D – Single or married son, daughter, grandson or granddaughter, of a Class A or Class B member, ages twenty-one to thirty-five. There are no Class C or Class D members at the present time.

Class F – Members in good standing for at least five years who have no residence within 50 miles of the Club and Class H – Honorary members as conferred by the Board of Governors. There are several Class F and Class H members currently in the Club.

There is also a Corporate Membership which allows businesses to have limited use of the Club at lunch only.

ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEEJanuary 26: Chef / Manager Night

This is one of our main highlights in dining. Marty, Joel and staff will show off their culinary talents to you, our members, with a meal that is an experience you will not forget. Specialty wines are available to accompany this spectacular meal. Marty, Wendy, Joel and Linda will put this evening together as a ‘Thank You’ to our membership. This event never fails to be one of the loveliest evenings on our functions calendar. So, don’t forget to mark this date down and bring along a guest to show off your club and its talented staff and fabulous cuisine.

Be a Club AmbassadorFunctions are an important part of keeping our Club running smoothly. We need to suggest NCQ to our friends and business associates as THE place to have their Christmas Parties, anniversary celebration, family and school reunions, retirement parties etc. etc. etc. We, the members, are the best advertising money can’t buy!

Christmas as the Neighborhood Club

The beautiful decorations organized by Fran Foy and implemented by staff and Club members did not go unnoticed. It is a huge undertaking every year-- com-piling sorting, bow-tying, wreath hang-ing, garland twisting and bulb plac-ing for every room in the Club. Many thanks to all who volunteered for all to enjoy especially our function clients. If you are thinking of discarding an gen-tly used Christmas decorations, please contact the office. We always need re-placements for upcoming years.

BOOK CLUB IIThe book selected for January l8th is “Mrs. Tom Thumb” by Melanie Benjamin. big name to live up to for a woman of less than three feet. The future General Tom Thumb did just that. She is one of T.B. Barnum’s “oddities” that shows love and desire, strength and ambition come in all sizes. Mrs. Tom Thumb brings out the humanity in all of us. “ Life Between the Oceans” by M.L. Stedman was suggested for February and The President’s Club is considered a must read by Nancy Gibbs and M. Duffy, also for February.

MEMBERS NOTESGrandchildren of Bob and Cathy Beniers (Catrina) and Deanna and Greg Seymourian, (Abby) played a starring role in a recent production of the Nutcracker performed by Center Stage Dance Studio. Well, maybe it wasn’t a starring role — it was more of a 2 minute role, but they LOOKED like stars.

• • •At its 47th annual meeting on Tuesday, April 24, the Quincy Community Action Programs, Inc.’s (QCAP) Board of Directors celebrated the organization’s successes and honored the achievements of community members who were exemplary in their support of QCAP’s mission. Among the honorees were Neighborhood Club members Quincy Mayor Thomas P. Koch and Donald P. Uvanitte of Eastern Insurance. & Co., Inc. The Board recognized Quincy Mayor Thomas P. Koch with a 2012 Extra Mile Award, given to community members who go above and beyond in their support of QCAP’s mission and its clients. • • •If you were lucky enough to attend the Quincy Choral group Christmas performance, you would have heard our own Maryalice Yafrate and Marie Roche performing. A special presentation was a special performance at Sacred heart church of “Simplify The Season” words and music by Kathleen Ready arrangement by John Nichols, which has “gone viral” Watch for a special fund raiser in March.

Ellen Gallagher took part in the Festival of the Nine Lessons of Advent with the choirs of St. Elizabeth’s, St. Mary of the Hills and St. Agatha’s Choirs in Milton.

CHIP OFF THE OLE’ BLOCKAt the 10th annual dinner/auction to benefit the New England Center of Homeless Veterans, Auctioneer, member, Dan Flynn’s, best moment was putting his own 11-year old son on stage. After purchasing the ball, the high bidder offered to return the ball to Garrett who refused and insisted the ball go to Veterans Center for the enjoyment of all.

This year’s breakfast was a huge success, After a delicious buffet, the children awaited the arrival of Santa by singing several Christmas Carols, accompanied by Barbara Walsh on the piano. Mary Alice Yafrate traveled throughout the audience, encouraging all to participate. When Santa arrived, he was greeted with cheers and accompanied by Mrs. Santa, who helped disperse the gifts that arrived from the North Pole. The children spent the rest of the morning admiring their toys and creating Christmas crafts in the member’s lounge. Thanks to all who participated in this family event and helped make the morning exciting. Extra thanks to all staff members, but especially to Jay and Linda, who gave of their time to see that Mr. and Mrs. Santa arrived on time.
