    ZMR

zmiris a largemetropolis in the western extremity ofAnatolia and the third most

populous city inTurkey, afterIstanbul andAnkara. zmir's metropolitan area extends alongthe outlying waters of theGulf of zmirand inland to the north acrossGediz River'sdelta,to

the east along analluvial plain created by several small streams and to a slightly more rugged

terrain in the south. The ancient city was known asSmyrna (Greek:Smyrni), and the

city was generally referred to as Smyrna in English, until the Turkish Postal Service Law of

28 March 1930 made "zmir" the internationally recognized name.

The city of zmir is composed of several metropolitan districts. Of these, Konak district

corresponds to historical zmir, this district's area having constituted the "zmir Municipality"

(Turkish:zmir Belediyesi) area until 1984, Konak until then having been a name for a centralneighborhood aroundKonak Square and is still the core of the city. With the constitution of

the "Greater zmir Metropolitan Municipality" (Turkish:zmir Bykehir Belediyesi), thecity of zmir became a compound bringing together initially nine, and more recently

    elevendistricts,namelyBalova,Bayrakl,Bornova,Buca,ili,Gaziemir,Gzelbahe,Kara

balar,Karyaka,Konak andNarldere. Almost all of these settlements are former district

centers or neighborhoods which stood on their own, with their own distinct features and

temperament. In an ongoing process, the Mayor of zmir was also vested with authority overthe areas of additional districts reaching fromBergama in the north toSelukin the south,

bringing the number of districts to be considered as being part of zmir to twenty-one under

the new arrangements, two of these having been administratively included in zmir only

    partially.
