Westbridge Primary School Year 3 Curriculum Information – Summer 2 nd Half 2018 English Pupils will have opportunities to learn to: draw inferences such as inferring characters' feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions, and justify inferences with evidence; plan, write their own mystery stories; discuss writing similar to that which they are planning to write in order to understand and learn from its structure, vocabulary and grammar; discuss and record ideas; organise paragraphs around a theme; in narratives, create settings, characters and plot; assess the effectiveness of their own and others’ writing and suggest improvements; propose changes to grammar and vocabulary to improve consistency, e.g. the accurate use of pronouns in sentences; proof-read for spelling and punctuation errors; read aloud their own writing, to a group or the whole class, using appropriate intonation and controlling the tone and volume so that the meaning is clear. Mathematics Pupils will have opportunities to learn to: solve money problems; identify right angles, recognise that two right angles make a half-turn, three make three quarters of a turn and four a complete turn; identify whether angles are greater than or less than a right angle; describe movement using coordinates, compass points and turns identify lines of symmetry; read time to the nearest minute; solve measures word problems involving time; use calendars; compare time; order time. Science This half term the children will continue to learn about ‘Forces and Magnets’. They will learn about forces in the context of pushing and pulling, and will identify different actions as pushes or pulls. The children will work scientifically and collaboratively to investigate friction, by exploring the movement of a toy car over different surfaces. Furthermore, they will conduct an investigation into the strength of different types of magnets. The children will have a chance to explore the way magnetic poles can attract and repel in an exciting activity, making their own compass and using it to find hidden items. Computing The focus this half term will continue to use the programme KODU. They will have the opportunity to design their own game. This half term Year 3 will be learning about religious buildings. They will understand that

there are often special rules about acceptable behaviour and dress when visiting a religious

building. They will be learning about the following religious buildings: Christian church,

Muslim mosque, Jewish synagogue, Hindu mandir Sikh gurdwara and Buddhist vihara

Art/DT

This half term the children will design and make photo frames. They will

gain an understanding of ways in which structures can be made stable, recognising conflicting demands on the structure; have

designed and made a complete personalised free-standing photograph frame, appropriate

for a particular person.They will also have the opportunity to look at

different sculptures and try to make one out of clay.

Music

In Music this half term, Year 3 will continue to have sessions with the music teacher learning to control their voices when singing and using drums and percussion instruments effectively

to compose music.

PE

Pupils will continue to learn all about outdoor games.The children will learn skills with running jumping, throwing and catching

in preparation for Sports Day.The children will also have the opportunity to learn the basic skills of

tennis. They will focus on holding the racket and hitting the ball over a net.

History/Geography

This half term the children will be finishing off learning aboutLeisure and Entertainment in the 20th Century.

In Geography the children will learn about the counties of England. They will investigate a country of their choice looking at: climate, landscape, currency, people, and food, just to name a few. They will then compare

their country to England and identify similarities and differences

Attends school ON TIME, EVERY DAY Wears the correct uniform to school each day Actively demonstrates Grace, Love, Fellowship and the 4Ps Completes and returns their homework every week

Our new curriculum targets are as follows: Writing: Must: I can use –s and –es to make plurals and extend sentences with conjunctions –and, but, because. Should: I can use commas to separate items in a list and use present perfect tense. Could: I can use present perfect tense and use heading and subheading to aid presentation.Reading: Must: I can discuss reasons for events by beginning to use clues in a story. Should: I can discuss reasons for events based on evidence in the text.Could: I am beginning to read between the lines to interpret meaning and explain what characters are feeling and thinking. Mathematics:Must: I can explain my method to find the answer. Should: I can prove/disprove a statement using examples as evidence.Could: I can decide whether a statement is always/sometimes/never true and give examples.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

Home School Communication: I will be in the playground before/after school on most days if you need any information. If you have any worries or concerns, please contact the school office to make an appointment with me for a formal meeting.

Attendance and Punctuality: We have high expectations for attendance and punctuality. Make sure that your child comes to school ON TIME, EVERY DAY. If you do not send your child to school on time, every day, THEY WILL MISS VALUABLE LEARNING TIME THAT CAN NOT BE REPLACED!

Behaviour: We have high expectations for work and behaviour; therefore, it is essential that you give your child a daily reminder about the importance of demonstrating: Grave, Love, Fellowship, Pride, Perseverance, Positivity and Potential (4Ps) in everything that they do.

Uniform: Please ensure that your child wears the correct uniform each day to promote a sense of pride and belonging in our school community. Children must wear plain, sensible black shoes to school (shoes with too much decoration, additional colours or trainers are not part of our school uniform).

PE: Children will have PE every Thursday (outdoors). Please ensure that your child brings the correct PE kit (white t-shirt, black shorts/track-suit and trainers/plimsolls. Because it is outside this half term, please ensure that your child is equipped for the weather) to school.

Homework: Children receive homework every Friday. Remember to ask your child to explain their homework to you and support them as necessary. Please ensure that your child completes their homework each week and returns it to school by Wednesday. If the homework is not returned on time, it will not be marked.
