A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf Sentient Theatre “If I could not grasp the truth about Women in the past, why bother about Women in the future?” -Virginia Woolf The F-word is getting dirtier, with women worldwide proclaiming, “I don’t need feminism because…” A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf is a gently challenging, provocative and intelligent reflection on a subject no one on this planet can avoid: why does feminism and 'a room of one's own' still matter? Sentient Theatre’s production breathes new life into the history of women and literature in this stage adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s 1928 essay. Adapted and directed by Peta Hanrahan, A Room of One’s Own features four performers – Carolyn Bock, Anna Kennedy, Jackson Trickett and Marissa O’Reilly – as the four corners of Virginia Woolf’s mind in conversation with each other and the audience. The work explores and tests feminist theories from an historical perspective, delivering the main themes and ideas from the novelette to a present-day audience, while keeping Woolf's language intact and charming humour alive. “I say this without reservation: this is the most important work of my life, bringing the voice of Virginia Woolf back to a contemporary audience. Her logic and depth of insight changed everything for me when I was a young artist and now I see around me, again, the urgent need for her words and philosophy for a new generation.” - Peta Hanrahan. A Room of One’s Own is an invitation to investigate the ongoing relevance of feminism by reflecting on our past. It aims to move beyond anger and find new answers to the question – “where are my mentors and where is my tradition? “ This luminous, accessible production from Peta Hanrahan captures the beauty of Woolf's prose and the complexity of her ideas. It's refreshing – especially in an age where social media amplifies outrage.” Cameron Woodhead The Age ★★★★ A Room of One’s Own is a mix of the artistry of our new generation of theatre makers combined with the wise and timeless work of a past genius… I was immersed by this play; every aspect was of the highest quality.
