Commodore’s Comments June is the first official monthof the summer season. Most of us full-time Floridians look forward to the summers in Florida. When we do complain about the heat and humidity, it’s mostly as a tactic to ward off the northern invaders during the summer months. But, by now I start to miss my close VYC

friends who choose to leave us during the summers. So, hey there friends, wherever you are, we miss you very much and look forward to your return! In the meanwhile, we’re having a blast here at the Club, so no worries, see you when you get back...oh yea, and it’s really hot and humid. You may have noticed some new folks and perhaps some familiar faces at the Club these past few weeks. On behalf of the VYC, I welcome our Summer Members and their guests to the Club. I encourage our Summer Members to utilize the facilities and enjoy all the amenities available at the VYC. Many of our Regular memberships started as Summer memberships. Please do not hesitate to ask me about our Club or additional membership possibilities. Everyone is probably aware that June is known as a very popular and great month to get married. Tammy and I thought so and got married in June 25 years ago. But do you also know that the Venice Yacht Club is a great place to get married? The VYC offers our community a variety of private banquet and event opportunities. Whether your needs are a casual pool side birthday party or an elegant ballroom affair, please consider the Venice Yacht Club as the destination for your event. Contact our professional event coordinator, Denise Koppa, or our management staff for information on hosting your event at the VYC.

Interestingly, June in the Northern Hemisphere is the seasonal equivalent of December in the Southern Hemisphere and vice versa. Coincidentally, this factoid is very relevant this year at VYC because our team of Christmas planners are in full swing now, making preparations and acquiring décor items for the holiday season. The process is especially challenging this year because the vast majority of our existing holiday décor items were in poor condition and beyond reusing. The Board of Directors recently approved a reinvestment in new décor items for our Club. I am really excited with anticipation for our members and their families to enjoy the upcoming holiday season at VYC. I offer my sincere gratitude and thanks to Chairperson Kim Keitchen, her dedicated group of Team Captains, and the scores of volunteers who have worked very hard to make the upcoming holiday very special for me and our entire membership. But there is more. This group is also creating a new cataloging, displaying and storing format which will streamline the decorating process and ensure continuity for future holiday seasons. I hope I got you excited about this year’s Christmas at VYC long enough to take your mind off all the tropical heat and humidity (this is Floridian code for fun). If you are thinking more like I do and absolutely love our beautiful tropical weather, you will want to save the date of June 10 and join me for the Tropical Nights Party at VYC. Experience the best ice cold beer, frozen drinks and delicious, themed menu items while enjoying cool music provided by the band Tropical Ave. Please check out this month’s Currents or our website at www.veniceyachtclub.com for other cool events to experience this month at your VYC. One more June event that is especially dear to my heart is the birthday of my beautiful bride, Tammy. Happy birthday, my love, and please accept my apology for all the crappy birthday presents I have bestowed upon you through the years. Looking forward to another hot & humid July and pondering some nautical inspiration:

In sailing, as in life – It is not the destination – But rather the journey itself – That truly matters. ~ Herman Melville ~

Manager’s Column Summer has clearly arrived and all that it entails. The temperatures and the humidity are on the rise. Perfect time to take a dip in the Club pool and enjoy your favorite beverage. June also marks the beginning of Hurricane Season 2017. Currently, forecasters have looked into their crystal balls and predicted a lighter

than usual season… whatever that means. Regardless, be assured that should a storm approach, your Club will be ready. We have pruned the trees around the Club not only because they needed it but also just in case! You will notice a lot of new faces around the Club. As you probably know, during the summer months we offer a six-month summer membership. At the same time, we establish reciprocal arrangements with several other prestigious country clubs in the area. This helps the Club to offset the loss of our Snowbird members. If you have any questions as to what clubs are part of our summer reciprocal program, please see page 16 or call the Club. There are several fun events planned for June. Be sure to read the Currents carefully and watch your emails for details. Fair winds and following seas.Jerry Clemens, Club Manager

Message from the Fleet Captain Sail Times are a-changing in sailing. But I am not! I am getting as obsolete and cantankerous as those old timers who in my youth stated, “This wave of sailboats made of fiberglass is anabomination!Theyare constructed of ‘frozen snot’ and will never stand the test of time!”

Well, the frozen snot has stood the test of time! And the old timers? Well, not so much. What started this current rant is Fruition’s recent participation in a number of light air races. Fruition andI,botholdandoverweight, getalongjustfine.Wedo not, however, get along very well with these new ultra lightweight racing machines with their carbon masts and black carbon fiber sails.During the recentSarasota Bay Cup someone told me that when the sun was shining just right you could see right through the hull of Jim Liston’s old J-105 Cat’s Meow (now named Raptor). It could have just been sour grapes since the comment was made as Raptor passed us at great speed, exactly as Jim Liston used to do with Cat’s Meow! We go from these local high tech racing machines to the current World Series races in 45-foot catamarans called AC-45s. These boats look like black, angular metal spaceships, not graceful sailboats with their “white sails shaking.” You need an entire crew trained likefighterpilotstohandlethesebeasts. This technology is transformational, not just for America’s Cup contenders, but now for mono hulls with their hydrofoil dagger boards that, at speed, lift the sailboat entirely out of the water, greatly increasing the speed and allowing the boat to skim over the waves supportedonlybythesefoils.Isthissailingorflying? The current sailboat speed record is 65 knots. Wow, would I like Fruition to pass by one of our Yacht Club powerboats at that speed! Unfortunately, with hydrofoils she could not leave an attention-getting “pay-back” wakeofsufficientheighttogettheircaptain’sattention. Well, that rant over plus two blood pressure pills and I am able to see that these speed-related developments may be just what it takes to get the younger generation interested in sailing. But hydrofoiled Optis flyingaround Roberts Bay at 21 knots? Push my wheelchair closer and gimme a break!Bill Gately, Fleet Captain - Sail

Message from the Fleet Captain Power When I think about our April cruise plan to the Sarasota Yacht Club, I am reminded of the quote from the American dramatist Clare Boothe Luce: “No good deed goes unpunished.” What a weekend it was supposed to be, with the great facilities of SYC and the

boat show in progress at Marina Jack. With lots of the usual planning and coordination, we had twelve vessels signed up, but at the end of the day, they could only accommodate three from our group. We accepted our “punishment” and it was encouraging to see that several vessels still got out on their own to other destinations, Outlaw among them. The month of June starts our preparation for the lease renewal process for those of us with vessels moored at the Club. Watch for an email from the Dockmaster containing the new lease agreement that goes into effect on July 1. Along with the new agreement, proof of insurance and current safety inspection is required for the coming year. This month also starts our “Freestyle Cruises” for the summer months. Although there is no set formal cruise planned at this point, several vessels will be out and about, soifyoucaretoshareyourfloatplan, justsendme an email with the details. Let me close with a plug for the Venice Youth Boating Association. Most of you think of me as a “power” boater, but my father taught me to sail when I was just eight years old. I went on to own four sailboats over the years, and in my opinion there is no better way to learn the lessons of boat handling, and the effects of the wind and current, than in a sailboat. The VYBA is starting their summer program this month, and we intend to continue the family tradition by enrolling our nine-year-old granddaughter. You might consider doing the same for your kids or grandkids; it is a wonderful way to pass on a skill.See you on the water,Kitch Keitchen, Fleet Captain, PowerPh: 416-0300 • Email: [email protected]

Introducing Freestyle Cruising

For the summer months, with the temperatures rising, we would like to introduce “Freestyle Cruising.” While several of our fellow boaters leave the area for cooler climates, there are many of us who are here year round and still want to cruise, butwithamoreflexibleschedule.Youare“Free” to choose your destinations, length of your cruises and whether you want to go solo or invite others to join your float plan. If you need anyassistance with planning a cruise or would like me to coordinate your itinerary with others, just send me an e-mail at [email protected] or give me a call at 416-0300. I know that Kim and I will be traveling to several FCYC Clubs as well as other locations during these months. We look forward to seeing you on the water!

The""Joy" Club If you would like to introduce your guests, children and grandchildren to sailing on the Gulf of Mexico, or even motoring Roberts Bay and the Intracoastal

from Venice to Sarasota or Lemon Bay, we have a very practical way for you to do so. Consider joining the Joy Sailing Club. We have a limited number of openings available, and our members

have access to the Club’s beautiful 33-foot Ranger auxiliary sloop for their sailing and/or motoring

pleasure. Always ready, always clean and always fun. Contact Fleet Captain - Sail Bill Gately at

Chef ’s Corner Chef’s Corner Summary:

Blueberries have long been a favorite treat. And scientists have recently come to know that they possess amazing health benefits, too. Here'sa look at how blueberries are so beneficialandhowyoucangetyourdose.

Blueberry muffins, blueberrycream pies, blueberry cheesecake, blueberry pancakes, fresh moist

blueberries.... just reading the words is enough to evoke that summer-sweet, luscious tang and get your mouth watering. Everyone knows blueberries are delicious, but didyouknowthey'regoodforyourhealth, too?Infact, blueberries have been touted as the cure for a host of serious medical problems including urinary infections, diabetes, high cholesterol levels, Alzheimer's andcancer. First let's look at what exactly blueberries are.Blueberries are the fruit of flowering plants native toNorth America, now also grown in Australia, New Zealand and some South American countries such as Chile and Argentina. Blueberries are cultivated and also picked wild. The blueberry season in North America tends to run from mid-May to September, depending on the latitude. The fruit is best enjoyed in season when the taste is at its peak and the nutritional value at its highest. The dark blue berries can be enjoyed raw, or more commonly made into cookies, cakes, pies, scones, cereals, jellies and jams, and even pizzas. So, what's so special about blueberries? It couldbe said that the blueberry is a nutritional powerhouse. Blueberries are a rich source of vitamins C and A, potassium, folate, iron, manganese and vitamin K. And 140 grams of fresh blueberries contain three grams of thedietaryfiberthat'ssogoodforyourdigestivesystem. But the main benefits of blueberries come from theanti-oxidantstheycontainintheformofbioflavonoids.Antioxidants are important for their ability to neutralize free radicals. When our body processes oxygen, free radicals are produced as byproducts. These are highly-volatile substances that can damage our cells and are thought to be responsible for aging and a host of degenerative diseases. Fortunately, substances known as anti-oxidants found in fruits and vegetables work to neutralize free radicals and reduce their potency. They give blueberries their deep blue hue and offer a range of beneficial properties. For one thing, they're

anti-inflammatory and protect large and small bloodvessels from oxidative damage. This can protect blood vessels from damage caused by high blood-sugar levels in diabetics. This is especially important for the blood vessels in the eyes. And one of the more exciting findings about blueberries is that they canhelp arrestthementaldeclinethatoccurswithAlzheimer'sdisease. So, what's the best way to get your dose ofblueberries? Eating them raw is best but this is not always convenient. Fortunately, there are many ways to prepare blueberries that help bring out their delightful flavortothebestadvantage.Themostpopularisyoucanalso make the old-fashioned blueberry pie just like your grandma used to make. The herbs cinnamon and mace compliment the taste of the blueberries and the result isdelightful. It'sjustoneofmanywaystoincorporateblueberries into your diet. So, make blueberries a part of your diet. Not only will you have a delicious new tasteinyourlife, butyou'llalsobedoingyourhealthaworld of good. I will be showing you new and exciting ways to incorporate the blueberry experience into your life. Make your reservations now and look for those blueberries on the menu.Optimal Health!Chef Josh

Stocking the Shelves NOW for

Christmas in July

New VYBA Sailing Director Tara Foster, our first-year sailors’ instructor, has been promoted to Sailing Director, succeeding Bryan White, who resigned to pursue a unique opportunity on the high seas. Tara brings significant sailing and coaching experience. For three years she was Head Instructor at Hoover Sailing Club in Ohio, leading the

Summer Learn to Sail program and serving as the Head Coach of the Junior Race Team for two of those years. She is a US Sailing Certified Level 3 Coach, and brings a wealth of knowledge and innovative ideas to our program. Tara was a very active member of Denison University’s sailing team as Captain, then Commodore, and finally as the Alumni Advisor following her graduation from the university with a major in theatre and minor in physics. Tara has extraordinary talent, skills, and sailing knowledge to share. A Pine View graduate, she has made Florida her home since middle school and she currently resides in Englewood. VYBA Commodore’s Cup Celebration After our Commodore’s Cup Regatta and the parade of VYBA sailors, Past Commodores, and VYC board members for the Retreat Ceremony, a five-year tradition continued with VYBA’s presentation of the IOBG / VYBA Commodore’s Cup to P/C Joe Dombrowski, Venice IOBG chapter president. Then Joe presented Commodore Carper with the Cup as a perpetual reminder of the VYC’s continuing support of greater Venice youth sailors, guided by the VYC charter of 1951, and put into action when the original “Pram Club” sailed into Roberts Bay one year later. VYBA Honors P/C Merle and Pat Graser VYBA has named these lifelong sailors as Honorary Life Directors in recognition of their 50+ years of direct involvement with youth sailing. Beginning in 1963, Pat served as a volunteer sailing instructor for many years and recruited VYC volunteers to help with instruction and repairing Prams. Merle raised funds to

www.veniceyouthboating.com

build new Prams to replace the original sailboats. Instrumental in the Pram Fleet’s incorporation in 1969 as VYBA, Inc., he received the IRS 501(c)

(3) certificate) for the not-for-profit Corporation and served on its board for many years. Today, Merle and Pat attend every regatta VYBA hosts here, join our adult twilight sailors at the Tiki on Thursday evenings, and attend all of our events for sailors and parents. Each year, Pat presents her namesake perpetual award to the outstanding VYBA female sailor of the year.Pram Shed’s Boat Yard Renovation VYBA’s small, crowded boatyard with aging outside racks and crammed storage space is undergoing a complete renovation. Safety will be improved and the number of storage racks will increase. A new south wall matching VYC’s front wall will replace the old chain link fence. A crushed shell boatyard ground cover will be installed. An attractive hedge will replace the overgrown palm at the VYC’s exit driveway. At approximately $80,000 in cost, the renovation is funded entirely by VYBA through major fund raising efforts. In addition to increased safety for sailors and more sailboat storage space, the VYC’s appearance will be enhanced significantly.

The Burgee Store Committee is accepting inventory for the July 1 and 2 Christmas in July Sale. Anytime in June, please bring in your gently used items to donate for the sale. Items such as Christmas and other seasonal decorations, costume jewelry, DVDs, and dishware are requested. Changing your home décor? The Burgee Store gals, Peg, Marge and Lee, will appreciate your donations.

Further details on the grants are available on our website: veniceyachtclub.com / click on the top menu - "Community" and "Charitable Foundation." The April Jazz under the Stars event was a great success with almost 150 people attending to enjoy good music, good food, good drink and good weather. Please mark your calendars for August 10 for our Blues night. It will surely be another wonderful evening of music that is not normally heard at our Club. For more information, please contact Foundation Vice Chair, Don Healy. Eleven VYC members volunteered at the Veterans Stand Down on April 22. All attending reported it was a very rewarding experience helping homeless and other challenged veterans receive the support they needed and deserved. The Venice Yacht Club recently announced a $77,000 grant through the Community Contribution Tax Credit Program to Habitat for Humanity South Sarasota County for the construction of a home in North Port. This is the third home the Club has sponsored. The Foundation is coordinating the required 200 volunteer hours and publicity. Please watch

for information on the volunteer days from Warren Major, the Foundation’s Volunteer coordinator.

Two additional events are coming up in which I am sure you will be interested in participating. Our annual Auction Benefit is on Saturday, October 14. We have already received many auction items, including

a Holland America seven-day cruise for two, dinners for a crowd at Fins and at Bonefish Grill, a Sky Family Y annual membership, some fantastic jewelry and so much more. For more information, please contact the Foundation’s auction benefit coordinators, Bill and Joan Bowen. And finally, a new event will be launched on November 12: A 12-mile Loop around Venice bike ride. This will be a fun ride with no hills and will be open to all levels of bikers. Enjoy a pancake feast following the ride. For more information, please contact the Foundation’s ride coordinator, Dave Slaman. Thank you for your support of the VYCCF

From the Fleet Surgeon

Although several things can cause knee pain (like a specific injury) Ithought I would discuss the common causes of non-injury knee pain. Arthritis can happen at any age but

if you are under 60 and have had a rather abrupt onset of symptoms, something other than arthritis may be going on. When you hear about a patient who has a “torn cartilage,” they have a tear in one of the two menisci on either side of the knee. These tears can occur from an injury or sudden event like squatting but also can commonly occur with simple wear and tear of aging. The meniscus is a C-shaped rim of cartilage that serves as a cushion on each side of the knee. Small tears or frays can sometimes just cause pain on one side of the knee or behind the knee. If the tear is larger, patients experience mechanical symptoms like giving way, catching or just not being able to trust their knee. Squatting is usually very difficult. If x-rays shownosignificantarthritis, thenanMRImaybe indicatedtodiagnose a torn meniscus. Surgical treatment for a torn

meniscus, if conservative measures fail, is done with a 30-minute arthroscopic, out-patient procedure and usually has a quick recovery. Wearing of the joint surface itself (osteoarthritis) obviously is more likely as we age. Symptoms usually come on very slowly and progress gradually. Symptoms include pain and sometimes swelling. Diagnosis can usually be made with simple x-rays although standing x-rays are important to measure loss of joint space. If a patient has no contraindication to taking anti-inflammatories,theycanbeusedalongwithTylenoltoreduce pain. As the arthritis progresses, many patients will require consistent, daily anti-inflammatory medicationbut this should be monitored by their physician. An occasional cortisone shot can be extremely effective in reducing pain and swelling but typically has a limited life span. When all else fails, a surgical knee replacement can restore quality of life. Replacements typically last over 20 years and with current technology perhaps over 30. Knee replacement surgery can be a challenging recovery but in the right patient quality of life can be dramatically restored. Dr. Kevin

INTERNATIONAL ORDER OF THE BLUE GAVEL

I hope everyone is doing well. On April 7-8, Diane and I attended the IOBG District 8 business meeting at the Lighthouse Point Yacht & Racquet Club in Broward County. About 60 IOBG members attended a wonderful dinner on Friday, the 7th, joined by LPYRC officers

and members. At our Saturday business meeting, we discussed many items, including membership retention. The district has about 240 members. Some clubs have no IOBG members; meanwhile Venice Yacht Club has the largest membership, 27 at the latest count in December. Our next IOBG district meeting is June 2 and 3 at the Isles YC in Punta Gorda. VYC P/C Bud and Dee Higginson will attend the IOBG spring regional meeting in Portland, Oregon, on June 7-10. IOBG President-Elect Bud will be “knighted”

during a local festival. At the IOBG meeting, Bud will present the results of a membership retention survey that he coordinated with the assistance of the area vice presidents and district directors. Back here at VYC, the 2017 Commodore’s Cup Regatta was raced on April 15. Back on land, the VYBA racers participated in a Retreat Ceremony with 10 members of the IOBG and 8 VYC Directors. VYBA Chair John Sammet presented the Commodore’s Cup to me and I passed it on to Commodore Kerry Carper. John awarded regatta trophies to the top racers while KerryandIofficiallycongratulatedthemonbehalfofVYC and the IOBG.

Have a great summer.

Hints to help you get started:

It will always be four digits. If you have a three digit number, it will be preceded by a zero. It will not be part of

any other sequence of numbers such as a date or phone number.
