BLUE SPRINGS SHRINE CLUBBy Fred Harle, P.P.

They always say, “April Showers BringMay Flowers.” Well, here it is April 10th,haven’t seen much rain here in our greatcity of Blue Springs, MO, but you knowwhat, if you are like me those May flowersare already starting to bloom. You knowthe kind I’m talking about, those pretty lit-tle yellow flowers that we spend a smallfortune trying to eliminate from our yardevery year. Yep, they are called dande-lions. If you don’t have any I’ll be morethan happy to bring you some of the onesfrom my front yard. That is just before Itry to get rid of them.

Today Jennie’s brother Kenny and hisLady Emma who live in Warrensburg, MOdrove up to see us. We met at Bob Evan’sRestaurant in Lee’s Summit, after whichall four of us visited the Swap Meet. Wow,what a super extravaganza. An even big-ger surprise was to be greeted by Ill. SirKevin Sleyster and being chauffeured byour Recorder, Mike Wheeler. Upon enter-ing the rear gate we were greeted by thehardest working Shriner I know , NobleMac McWilliams. Try and keep up withthis Noble and you’ll find it’ s impossible. Thanks Mac for all that you do for Ararat.

Let me tell you about our March BSSCmeeting. To begin with, our meetings withNoble Bill Fickle at the helm just get bet-ter and better . Following the usual open -ing ceremonies for our Shrine Club, we getdown to the business of trying to catch thefatted calf so to speak. See picture of ourDivan Liaison Officer, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby followed by alegion of hungry Shriners. We also treatour ladies okay . Please note picture withladies, Carol Newport, Vivian Snell,Marguerite Merryman, and Pat Stansell.

Thank you ladies for continuing to shareBSSC with all the rest of us.

Our President, Bill Fickle arranged aspectacular program for our entertainment.Jordan Mitchell, a member of DeMolay, presented a Ceremony of Life in full form.Wow, super impressive, you could hear apin drop. What a treat to see and hear sucha talented young man.

We treat our dignitaries with respect, and it’s always a pleasure to put out the oldBSSC welcome mat for any and all templeofficers. Please don’t wait for a specialinvite. The door is always open and wewant you to come and join us. See photoof President Bill Fickle, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby, and AmbassadorBud Higginbotham.

Our good buddy Noble Lou Sohn hadsome stents inserted close to his heart andhe is progressing great. He heard aboutPast President Bill Clinton doing okaywith his so he got some.

Last, but also a very important part ofour BSSC team is Noble James Gar gotta. He puts together our club newsletter , sec-ond to none, that keeps all our membersinformed about what’s going to happen, and what has happened. Not only aboutanything and everything in and about ourclub, but other clubs, uniformed units, andour temple in general. If you don’t believeit come see for yourself! BSSC meets onthe 4th Monday night of each month at6:30 pm in the American Legion Buildingon 7 Hwy in Blue Springs, MO. Call us,we’ll tell you how to get here.

That’s enough for this time! So untilnext time, a hug doesn’ t cost anything togive or get. Think about it!!!!!!

At the ONE HUNDRED THIRTY-SEVENTH ANNUAL SESSION OF SHRINERS INTERNATIONAL held in Denver, Colorado over the dates of July 3-7, 2011, a piece of legislation was adopted that changed the long standing prohibition of electioneering by or for any candidate for election in a temple election. The bylaw as amended at this session is as follows:§ 325.11 Election Regulations.

(a) Electioneering. A candidate for an elected office in a Shrine temple may print, publish and circulate during the year he is seeking the elected office, a resume consisting of his educational background, his vocational history and his Masonic and Shrine record. Except as provided in the prior sentence, the printing, publication, circulating or distribution of resolutions, letters, telegrams, tickets, email or other devices, by a unit, club, Noble or group of Nobles, suggesting, recommending, opposing or containing the names of proposed candidates for office in the temple is prohibited.

(b) Expenditures Prohibited. The expenditure of money for gifts, favors or entertainment on behalf of a candidate for elected office is prohibited.

(c) Violation. For any violation of (a) or (b), the Imperial Potentate may suspend any offending Noble, and he may declare the election of the officers void and order a new election.

(d) Notice. At least one week prior to the annual meeting or any election, the temple Recorder shall mail to each member a notice thereof containing this section.

This notice in this publication fulfills the requirement of the above bylaw section.

Hospital System HeroesFor the month of October the following Nobles have sponsored children into the Shrine Hospitals. If your name has never appeared in this column, consider getting involved. It will not only change your life, but will be a life changing experience for a child and his family.

Hospital Van DriversIf you are a member of Ararat Shrine you are encouraged to call the Hospital

Transportation Office (816) 923-5429 or (816) 923-1319 and become one of those men who transport our children to the St. Louis Hospital. This will be one of the most rewarding activities you will ever experience.

We encourage every man in Ararat to become a driver. It will require you to go to your State Driver’s License Office and obtain a copy of your driving record. As a mat-ter of fact, all drivers need to bring their records up to date in this manner.

A big Thank You to the following Nobles who have driven the Hospital Van in the month of October!

New Era for Shriners Hospitals for ChildrenShriners Hospitals for Children began accepting payments for care in our hospitals from

health insurance companies (called “third party” payors) on July 1, 2010. The St. Louis Hospital began billing insurance companies for services provided to our patients with

applicable insurance coverage effective February 1, 2011, and to date has collected 2.4 mil-lion dollars in reimbursements. We have not changed our mission or the care we provide to kids. What has changed is the way we talk about how care is provided at Shriners Hospitals for Children. We can no longer use the terms “free”, “no charge” or “no cost” when referring to care provided in our hospitals. These terms have been replaced with this phrase: We pro-vide care “regardless of the patients’ ability to pay.”

If a family is unable to pay the co-pay, deductible or co-insurance amount the hospital will work with them. No child will be refused treatment.

A Special Letter to Santa Dear Santa,

Do you remember the Christmas of 1944? That year, a teacher named Donald Yetter Gardner wrote the song: “All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth,” after he asked his 2nd grade class what they wanted for Christmas.

Almost all of his students answered him with a lisp, because they had at least one tooth missing. My parents, Ed and Marcia Norwood sang the song when they were kids in the 1950’s.

I lived in China in an orphanage until I was eight years old. We never celebrated Christ-mas. I heard the song for the first time in 2002 - my first Christmas in America - when you,

Santa, put a little toy mouse in my stock-ing that was missing one tooth. When I pushed on his tummy he sang: “All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth!”

I asked for more than my two front teeth my first Christmas. I hoped and dreamed and prayed for a pretty smile. Most of my teeth were in the wrong places because I was born in China with a cleft lip and palate. It must have been too much for my birth parents to handle, because I was left at a train station in Benxi City, Liaoning Province, when I was two days old. Someone found me and took me to the orphanage, and gave me the name: Fu Ju…which means bless-ing or great reward after much hard work.

I was adopted in October 2002, and now I have a Forever Family. My American parents kept my Chinese name as my middle name, and also gave me a new American name: Faith. My mom says both names fit me perfectly. My wish for a pretty smile is almost complete. I had surgeries in China, more surgeries at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, and multiple surgeries at the Shriners Hospital in Chicago. The Shriners even helped pay for my braces.

This Christmas 2011 – I’m not asking for something for me. I’m asking you to bring a new mini-van to the Shriners at Ararat Shrine Center in Kansas City, Missouri. You can drive it right up to their door at 5100 Ararat Drive, Kansas City, Missouri, 64129. Shriners help many children, regardless of their ability to pay, and whether they have insurance or not. They also provide free transportation to children and their families to Shriners Hospitals in the USA. The Kansas City Center has about 40 Shriners who are screened to be drivers. The Shriners in Kansas City have one van that was donated by the Warsaw Shrine Club in Warsaw, Missouri. The Warsaw Shriners saved the proceeds from Bingo games to purchase the van for the Kansas City Center. That van is 11 months old and already has 68,000 miles. The van makes four or five trips each week to Shriners Hospitals in Chicago, Cincinnati, and St. Louis. Sometimes the trips overlap, and they have to rent another van.

Santa, I know you have lots of helpers. Maybe one of them could donate a mini-van…or maybe 25 of your helpers could give $1,000 each…or 50 helpers could donate $500… or 100 helpers could donate $250…or 250 helpers could give $100. Just think how many children and families your donation will help!

I’ve waited for 17 years to have a pretty smile. Some people stop and stare at me – just like in the lyrics to “All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth.” ‘Everybody stops and stares at me. These two teeth are gone as you can see.’

My next big surgery is a facial reconstruction/jaw realignment in the Spring of 2011 at the Shriners Hospital Chicago. The Shriners have helped me and kids like me so much, I hope that your helpers, Santa, will give the Shriners a Christmas present they will never forget: a new mini-van.

Merry Christmas!Faith Fu Ju Norwood, 17 years old (Written with help from my Mom: Marcia Norwood)

Conditions Treated at the Cincinnati Hospital

Recovering from a burn injury is one thing, but proper scar management and burn reconstruction afterwards can make a huge difference in a child’s life.

Take for instance Paige Cox. Paige was critically injured in a Christmas Eve house fire 15 years ago that killed her brother, but it was nearly two years be-fore Paige became a Shriners Hospitals for Children® – Cincinnati patient.

It is not uncommon for a child to be cared for at a hospital closer to their home for immediate and even post-acute burn care but children are different from adults. They require years of reconstructive surgeries and extensive physical and occupational therapy to provide them with the best possible recovery as they grow. The Cincinnati hospital has an organized program for reconstruction and rehabilitation that has had a national and international reputation for more than 40 years.

Her mother, Mary noticed Paige’s rehab progress was not ideal. Paige had de-veloped physically limiting contractures over her arms and neck. Mary then re-membered another family at that first hospital who had been trying to transfer their child to the Cincinnati hospital. “Once I started talking to other families and the staff in Cincinnati I knew Paige needed to become a Shriners Hospitals patient,” said Mary. It was here Mary was confident that Paige would receive the best pediatric burn reconstructive care available.

Years later, Mary’s decision is still fresh in her mind, “I know Paige would not look as great as she does today or be the young woman she is, if it wasn’t for Shriners Hospitals for Children,” said Mary. “The moment we walked through the doors, I knew we were in the right hospital.”

Wow! That was quick. Wasn’t it summer last week? The CSSA, Swap Meet and Circus just flew

by. It’s the “Holiday” party, Camel’s milk and before you know it, we’re at the offi-cer’s seminar in January! Please take the next month and plan to have a successful 2012 in every aspect of Membership and the fraternity.

The single largest gift you can give the fraternity is a mem-ber. Whether you keep some-one from dropping, bring in a new one or restore an old one, a member is what we need. Take a moment and really think about the value of a Noble.

We cannot even put a price on their friendship so I won’t even try. One can’t re-ally measure the value of his contributions helping keep a Unit or Club stay alive and vibrant. I’m not qualified to place a num-ber on his worth when he’s at a Swap Meet, Circus or selling onions. I’m not there ev-ery time a Noble does a kind deed and is remembered as a Shriner, “who’d give you the shirt right off his back”. I can’t even fathom the value of a Shriner to a child who has been helped by our Hospitals.

I can tell you in monetary terms that if you get 100 Nobles, and they pay their dues, we will have $13,000 to pay our bills. From everything I hear we need many hundreds of them! You can help. You can

increase your value by making a commitment to help your fra-ternity by helping membership.

Call a fellow Noble who has not paid his dues, and ask him if you can help. Invite the fellow Noble who “doesn’t see the value in it anymore” to a Shrine event and help remind him of the fraternity and what it supports. Lastly, you can al-ways share the opportunity by carrying a pocket petition or

mini brochure with you at all times, and then using it. Please plan this last part of the year to make your value known as a proud member of this fraternity.

I have one huge surprise for you and it’s called a “Legacy Program” This is one of the most exciting programs being rolled out in many years. The Shriners Legacy Program is open to any male family mem-ber related to a Shriner, including: • Fathers • Grandfathers • Brothers • Uncles• Sons • Grandsons • Nephews • In-laws. There is a new member program as well as an ex-isting legacy program. Be on the lookout for this incredible program, “The Legacy Program”!

Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukah, Many Blessings this season!

When you read these words we will be in the midst of the Christmas season. The tree will be up and decorated. Our calendars will be crowded with activities that bring us to-

gether with family and friends. Some will be planning out-of-town, maybe even out-of-country trips. Others will be preparing to wel-come loved ones into their homes. There will be the selecting of gifts designed to show our affection and appreciation.

Christmas is a unique festival of merry making and gift-giving. The tradition of giving gifts in this season owes its origin to the Magi who came from the east to Jerusalem to greet the Babe in the manger with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

When choosing gifts let your heart be your guide. Don’t be concerned about matching gifts dollar for dollar. Beware of over-spending your budget be-cause nothing takes the cheer out of the holidays more than the prospect of facing unmanage-able debt in January.

Now, let me come right out and ask you, “Is Ararat Shrine on your gift list?” Think about it. If gifts are designed to show our affection and appreciation, wouldn’t our beloved frater-nity qualify?

Can I make a few “gift” suggestions for your consideration? 1. An “over and above” financial gift to the general budget. 2. Bring family and/or guests for a meal in our restaurant. 3. Make an effort to bring at least one new member into our Ararat family in 2012. 4. Become more active in your unit or club. 5. Become a Bingo “volunteer”. I know there is other “gift” ideas. Feel free to share these at our December 14th

Temple meeting. May your holiday season be filled with blessing after blessing!

death of Lady Arlene Kitson, wife of Ambassador Lew Kitson, in an automobile accident.

He also told that some changes had been made to the Ararat Shrine News, including slightly small-er page size and a slightly smaller font. Total sav-ings from those minor changes will be about $9,500 per year. We now have a new company doing the printing with a yearly contract. Our thanks to Office Manager Jerrie Bailey for making this happen.

Divan members were reminded to inform their clubs and units that their organizational information must be sent in to the Temple soon. If you are read-ing this, and your info is not in the office, you are late.

Christmas decorations are scheduled to be in-stalled by November 13 under the direction of Tem-ple Director Jim Waggoner.

Mixed Martial Arts fights will be held in Ben-nett Auditorium on November 19, while we Nobles are working at the Circus.

Bingo Appreciation Night will be December 12. Where we will give our thanks to those of us who have helped make our Bingo nights so successful.

The Children’s Christmas Party, scheduled for December 17 from 10:00 am to Noon, was dis-cussed and declared to be in good order. The Temple Christmas Party will be held on December 16.

The Temple will be closed on December 24, 25 and 26.

Camel’s Milk will be served on December 31, but the New Years Eve Party has been canceled. The Restaurant will be closed December 31, January 1, and January 2, except for the Camel’s Milk party on Saturday afternoon.

There was a discussion of Temple finances and cash flow, with a surplus of approximately $10,000 expected at year’s end.

The Potentate said that he wanted to have a Cold Sand Ceremony before the end of the year. Dis-cussion followed.

Illustrious Sir B. J. told the Divan that Noble Brent Marchant is working on an e-mail list of Unit and Club Directors and Presidents to streamline and expedite communications between the Temple and the Units and Clubs. Another list will be developed for Ambassadors.

Chief Rabban Richard Floyd discussed the 2011 Circus, informing the Divan that income is down with respect to last year. Novelty expenses are also down. We have a lot of advertising in place, includ-ing billboards, radio, and TV announcements and promotions. Divan Circus work assignments were distributed and Noble Richard announced that we were “Ready to Go.” He then asked Chaplain Loyd

to give us a light snowstorm on Monday.Assistant Rabban Wayne Spencer had nothing

to report. High Priest and Prophet Maurice Camerlynck

had nothing to report.Treasurer Mike Allen yielded to Chief Rab-

ban Richard to comment on the Financial Review meeting that was held a few days previously. At-tendees at the meeting were quite positive about the meeting. Treasurer Mike was very well prepared and answered questions well. The questions from the attendees were very good, and there were no tantrums. Treasurer Mike Allen agreed that it was a good meeting. There were some good questions about the restaurant, particularly restaurant income. Responses from the attendees were good. Fund rais-ing event income is up about $6,000, but the Swap Meet income is down about $3,000. Circus income was reported to be down about $16,000. There was a short discussion about opening the restaurant to the public by the meeting participants.

The Divan also discussed opening the restau-rant to outsiders at the Divan Meeting.

Recorder Mike Wheeler talked about cash flow with reference to the Circus, followed by a discus-sion of dues remissions. He also talked about a pro-posal for another Temple fund raiser concerned with selling fresh fruit to Nobles and the public.

First Ceremonial Master Steve Johnson report-ed on the Imperial Membership Meeting, character-izing it as “fantastic.” He told us that those Temples showing a consistent increase in membership have, without exception, instituted a program to “get back to the Blue Lodge.” Membership must be in the fore-front.

Second Ceremonial Master Dan Smothers said that the Festival of Champions in Warrensburg was a lot of fun. Shriners got cheers when they walked by.

Director Jim Waggoner reported that we still have problems with lax attendance at Bingo games.

Marshal Randy Berry reported that the second Free Friday on the Patio attracted about 50 people, who congregated around two roaring fires in fire pits. The restaurant sold some drinks and meals, and Noble Randy wants to continue with Free Friday in the spring. He also reported talking to the Lafayette County Shrine Club about merging with the Rich-mond Shrine Club. The Potentate will soon receive the report on the energy conservation project.

Captain of the Guard Bill Lutman reported that he had talked with Noble Nick Baldi, and he will in-stall security film on the south windows to improve their resistance to breakage. The security camera at the south door still needs to be upgraded.

Outer Guard Henry McDaniel had no com-ments.

There was a discussion of presenting the Arch Degree outside of the Shrine.

Chaplain Loyd Gentry had no remarks. The meeting was then called into executive ses-

sion until adjournment.

We finally had great weather for ourmeeting in April: no rain, no snow, no 20degrees and windy! Not that the weatherhad ever discouraged our members. Wehad the same great turnout, be the weath-er good or not so good!

Dignitaries attending this month wereLiaison Officer Dave Bushakra and LadyMolly, and Ambassador Curt Karnes andLady Sue. These two couples truly repre-sent good works and good fellowship forthe Shrine and we look forward eachmonth to seeing them.

We were happy to welcome back Daveand Nora Hutchison. They brought backa “truckload” of fish and invited us to theirhomefor the June meeting and a fish fry!

Dave, incidentally, won the 50/50 draw-ing, but that was in no way connected tothe invitation. We would never use anysort of bribery to get Dave and Nora to fixfish for us!

Our guest speaker was Sally Nance,Administrator for the Excelsior SpringsHospital. She gave us a brief history onthe hospital and all the improvementsthey have made, and the new independentliving center completed recently.

Our May meeting will be held again atCatricks Café in Lawson. Tell yourMasonic friends what fun and fellowshipwe have, and bring someone with you tothe next meeting.

Christmas is coming! It’s just around the bend. I have nothing to say this month, so I’ll cover some of those

things that I wish someone had told me. For instance, I wish someone had told

me to ignore that little black cat that came around a few months ago. Instead, I looked at him and thought he looked like he was hungry, since he was eating dog food that I had left there for the dog that seems to have adopted us. Then I decided that I didn’t want to watch that black cat starve to death, even though I am a confirmed dog man.

So, I bought a small bag of cat food. Then I bought a larger bag of cat food. Then, black cat was joined by a grey cat. So I bought another bag of cat food. When that bag was gone, I bought another bag of cat food. Now, ev-ery morning, I feed the cats. Yes, that’s the plural of cat.

Oh, yeah. They’ve now in-vited a ‘possum to join them for dinner every night.

And, the black cat still doesn’t trust me!

Kinda reminds me of some of these interpersonal relationships that we humans get into. Sometimes, we come across anoth-er specimen of our species who seems to be starving for something, so we do something that we think is really human of us. Then we form some kind of attachment to that stray, starving, human. Then the stray starts to de-pend on us, but we don’t really trust each other. Then we elect the stray to some office and the whole thing falls apart.

So it is with Santa Claus. We hear about him when we are young and trusting, and

he becomes our friend, and we talk to him in the shopping center and Bennett Audito-rium. Then we start to depend on Santa to give us things. Somewhere down the road, we find that Santa is not the real provider of all of those things, but maybe we’ve learned some other things along the way.

Maybe we learn that we’re a little luckier than some other people. Maybe we find some young human that’s starving for legs that work, or perhaps an arm where he has none. Maybe he’s asked Santa Claus for

legs or arms, but he’s begin-ning to lose his trust in that jolly old, fat, man in a red suit.

Maybe, just maybe, that youngster comes to meet a jolly, old, fat, man in a red fez who says he can help with those legs or that arm. And Santa comes to life again, only this time he’s for real.

And that brings me to the things that I wish someone would tell me today. I’d re-

ally like to hear somebody tell me that he’s found a young man that wants to wear that red Fez. I wish somebody would tell me that he’d like to be a Shriner. I wish that a whole bunch of young men would tell a whole bunch of Nobles that they all want to wear that Red Fez.

Somebody did tell me that a lot of men can be found within meeting places known as Blue Lodges. And that if we all go to those Blue Lodges, some of my wishes will be granted. We don’t need to go in there with a brass band, just go in as a jolly, old, fat, man with a red Fez on. Just go there and let them see that there’s something spe-cial about being a Shriner.

Why WINE? Wine has always been an integral part of life. At least, since people learned to make wine

and that was probably shortly after man took his first drink of stagnant water near the mast-odon feeding grounds. Wine has been a sta-ple of man’s diet for millennia, and a useful source of calories. Generally, the poorer the economy, the less fuss is made about wine, but the more vital to life it becomes.

In richer societies, wine becomes not a necessity, but an icon of the good life. Wine has been a part of religious ceremonies for as long as religions have existed. The ancient Greeks even assigned wine its own god, Dio-nysus (also known as Bacchus). Wine has also been a medicine. For most of history, wine has been safer than water, whether for washing wounds or mixing medicines.

Wine has always been an agricultural crop. Even today, entire regions from Cali-fornia to Spain, from Australia to Africa, have built economies on grape and wine produc-tion. In many wine regions, the difference between a cold, wet, summer and a warm, dry, one is the difference between prosperity and poverty.

Wine, you see, is about people. Wine is made by people, for people, and more than any other agriculture, reflects the character and tastes of the people who make it. Pour a glass of wine and you are tapping into the heart and soul of the people who made it. A French wine doesn’t taste like a German wine, and a California wine doesn’t taste like a Mis-souri wine. I suppose it might be possible to make an industrial grade wine. No personal-ity or sense of where it came from, but that’s not the kind of wine we’re talking about. That would be like comparing a McDonald’s ham-burger to a Hereford House Steak.

We’re looking for a wine that does more than make us drunk. We’re looking for a wine that gives us a sense of well-being and com-fort. We’re looking for a wine that makes us feel at peace with our world. We’re looking for a wine that makes us feel that we are living the good life. We’re looking for a wine that makes us feel good.

& Food Wine BY STEVE DOWDY

Transporters Shrine ClubBY RONALD NUTTER, SCRIBE

One lesson I have learned since be-coming a part of the Transporters is that you are never finished with

working on the trailer or the golf cart. When I first got the trailer, I had the good folks at Croft Trailer mount a bracket that would allow me to carry a spare tire for the trailer. I didn’t think until sev-eral months later about doing something similar for a spare tire for the golf cart. I have found that a trip to Tractor Supply will either find the solution I am looking for or the parts that will yield the result I am looking for or something very close to what I was trying to piece together.

The end of October brought about the Festival of Champions in Warrens-burg. This would be my first one since becoming a member of the Transporters. Due to a member of my family being un-der the weather, I wasn’t able to be there. Most of the Transporters were present to contribute to the success of the event that was reported at November’s monthly meeting. With the year quickly coming to a close, our next event will be the an-nual Circus. I look forward to seeing the new Nobles there. Remember to have fun helping while you are there, and it is for the kids!

Ararat Shrine had a great time at the FESTIVAL OF CHAMPIONS held October 29th in Warrensburg, MO.

The Festival of Champions is a high school band competition that is in its 11th season, continuing the 31 year tradition of excellence established by Music Bowl Missouri. The University of Central Mis-souri, Meyer Music and the Ararat Shrine Temple of Kansas City host the competi-tion that includes 25 high school bands from across the Mid-West, with up to 3 ad-ditional high schools participating in just the Drumline/Auxiliary competitions. The average attendance has been 8,000 con-sisting of families of the participants, area band enthusiasts and much of the local community. The profits are used to offer scholarships to the University of Central Missouri students, with a portion donat-ed to the Ararat Shrine Temple Hospital Transportation Fund.

With a full stadium looking on, Po-tentate BJ Richardson presented the tro-phy from Ararat to the High School with the most pre-sold tickets. That trophy went to Washburn Rural from Topeka. The Po-tentate and his Divan were then asked to present trophies to the three top perform-ing high schools in three divisions during the Preliminary Awards Ceremony.

The 2011 Festival of Champions was fortunate to see performances from many schools in the Kansas City metro area; namely, Raymore-Peculiar, Blue Springs, Lee’s Summit, Lee’s Summit North, Pleasant Hill, Shawnee Mission North, Shawnee Mission South, Shawnee Mis-sion West, Butler, Blue Valley Southwest, Raytown, Warrensburg, and Fort Osage. There were other schools that traveled a greater distance; namely, Parkview, Hill-crest, Tipton, Houston, Southern Boone, Topeka West and Washburn Rural from Topeka.

Ararat Shrine was recognized by the stadium announcer for the service provid-ed by Ararat in helping make this a suc-cessful event. Special “thanks” goes to the Divan and Nobles from the Greeters, Pro-vost, Shrineta, Transporters and Warrens-burg Houn Dawg Shrine Club, for helping Ararat shine. Our Nobles helped direct and park the school busses and their equipment trailers, provided pedestrian traffic control when the bands left the field, and manned the main gate where they took tickets and provided hand stamps.

Mark your calendar now to attend next year’s festival scheduled for October 20, 2012. We’ll be looking for you.

Festival of ChampionsBY DAVID kEY, PROGRAM COORDINATOR

www.araratshrine.com ARARAT SHRINE NEWS | 11

I t’s hard to believe that another year has just about run its course and we will be in the year 2012 when the next Ararat News comes out. We have had a good year this year. Everyone has been with us at most of the events that we have been able to attend, and

we had a good turnout for the circus. We have even acquired some new members this year. We were able to attend the competition at the C.S.S.A. Convention and had a good time at the parades this year. Next year will be even better as we grow and put more cars on the streets.

Since we didn’t have any news in the Ararat Shrine News last month, I was unable to tell all of the nobility about the service to the Masonic Fraternity in general and especially Ararat Temple, during the open house that was held at the Fairfax General Motors plant that was part of the National Open House event. Our President, James Blackburn, was invited by the Vice President of UAW Local 31, A.J. Shumate, along with a member of Rising Sun Lodge and prospective member of Ararat, Dave Barnhardt, to give out information on our fraternal order and the Shrine to the guests of the open house. Jamie brought his Mini Model T to the event for a static display and talked to many of those who came to the event. A hardy thank you to brothers Jamie and Dave for greeting the guests and talking to them about the Masons and the Shrine. From what I have heard, the Mini Model T was a hit with

the children and adults alike. It is great to hear that the visitors were wowed by his car when it was being displayed with all of the new cars that General Motors had on display and two of the Transformers. Well done Jamie and Dave.

As we look forward to the holiday season and good friends, good food, and good times with our families, let us take time to remember how blessed we have been and remember those who have felt the heart break of the disastrous things that nature has dealt. Let us look to the future with hope and the expectations of meeting again with our fellows in the coming year. Remember that we are going to have a Christmas Dinner this year and we all hope that everyone will be able to come to the party.

We are of course looking for more nobles to drive cars in the upcoming parade season. We will be sure to show everyone how much fun it is to motor through the parade route. We of course invite all of the members that we haven’t seen in a while to come and join us for the parades and the monthly meetings. The more the merrier. Because of the lack of mem-bers to fill the offices that were available in this year’s elections, the unit voted to hold over the current board for one more year. We hope that an influx of new members will help us fill the vacancies for next year. To do this we invite all nobles to come and join the T’s to help us grow in the future.

Lafayette County Shrine ClubBY RON ELLING, SCRIBE

The Lafayette County Shrine Club met November 10 at the Victorian Peddlar in Lexington for a deli-

cious turkey and all the trimmings din-ner. There were 21 Lafayette County Shriners and ladies present for the meal. President Delmar Dothage welcomed Liaison Officer and Marshal Randy Ber-ry and his Lady Shannon, Ambassador Curt Karnes and his Lady Susan, and Assistant Director of Uniformed Units Tim Rechterman and his Lady Linda.

President Dothage presided at the meeting. He recognized Keith Stonek-ing and his Lady Marcella and William DeMent and his Lady Cindy as new members. W.N. Gray read the minutes as reported in the Ararat News. Election of officers was held with Delmar Do-thage as President, Bill Oelrichs as Vice President, W.N. Gray as Secretary, Ber-nie Miller as Treasurer, and Ron Elling as Scribe. Committee Chairmen will remain the same as last year. Bill Oel-richs reported on kids in need through the Missouri Family Services. It was de-cided to adopt two children and spend about $50 each for gifts for them at Christmas. It was also moved and sec-onded for everyone that brings at least five canned goods to the next meeting, their meal would be free. Motion car-ried.

Nobles and Ladies in distress in-cluded Lady Virgie Stratton who is still under the weather and Bill Eastridge.

Ambassador Karnes announced the upcoming calendar of Ararat Shrine events. The Ararat Shrine Circus will be held November 17-20. Help is needed for that. Even the ladies can help and those hours will be used towards their Shriner’s Crown of Honor points. A do-nation will be made to the Hospitality Room during the Circus. Liaison Offi-cer Randy Berry reported about the new size of the Ararat News. Because of the size being smaller and there is no “flop over” according to postal regulations, there will be a savings of over $9,000 yearly.

Door prize chances were sold and the lucky recipients selected their priz-es. The money made from those ticket sales will be used to fill the sleigh for the next meeting. The next meeting will be the Christmas Social on December 8 at the Victorian Peddlar in Lexington.

14 | ARARAT SHRINE NEWS DECEMBER 2011

Illustrious Sir B. J. Richardson called the November, 2011, meeting to order at 7:37 PM in the Frank S. Land Ballroom.

Chief Rabban Richard Floyd informed the Captain of the Guard of the impending proceedings, who, in turn, informed the Outer Guard.

Captain of the Guard Bill Lutman re-ported that our Temple was under a double and trusty guard.

Chief Rabban Richard said he was sat-isfied that all present were Shriners, and then informed the Potentate that our Temple was free from jeopardy as there were none present save members of our order.

Oriental Guide Clarence Kirby pre-pared the Altar.

Chaplain Loyd Gentry remembered our Nobles who had been visited by the Black Camel and gave the Invocation.

The Legion of Honor presented the col-ors, accompanied by the Concert Band.

The assembled Nobles recited the Shrine Pledge of Allegiance and the Ararat Concert Band played the National Anthem.

Recorder Mike Wheeler read two pe-titions for creation and reported that there were no petitions for affiliation.

Oriental Guide Kirby prepared the al-tar, and the Nobles voted unanimously to accept all petitions.

There were no petitions for restoration, two demits and three remissions.

Treasurer Mike Allen gave the Trea-surer’s Report, which showed that we are still solvent. Utilities bills for October were back to normal. Total General Fund rev-enues for the year are down slightly. Fortu-nately, expenses for 2011 are also less than 2010, leaving us with a greater “profit.” The Restaurant still shows a deficit. The Res-taurant revenues are down about 30% from last year, largely due to fewer events held in the temple. Expenses are also down, but by only about 15%, which is probably a reflec-tion of the fixed expenses of running a Res-taurant. Overall, there is now a predicted year-end surplus of about $10,000.

Noble Nick Baldi reported that he had attended the Temple Financial Revue held on November 4, and said the Treasurer Mike Allen and Office Manager Jerrie Bailey did a very good job of presenting the facts and answering questions.

Illustrious Sir B. J. discussed changes to the Temple Newsletter which will save Ararat $9,500 per year. The size of the pa-per has been reduced by about two inches, which made it enough smaller that it now falls into a new, lower cost, postage class. The typeface was reduced in size by about

½ point and its appearance was changed slightly.

Illustrious Sir B. J. announced that six Nobles were eligible for 50-year member-ship pins, but none were present. Those

Nobles are Ryland R. Foster, John G. Jew-ett, Ernest H. Miller, Paul E. Nicholas, Jr., Thomas A. Parr, and Donald D. Quarles.

The meeting was then turned over to Chief Rabban for Step-up Day.

Chief Rabban Richard Floyd called for Gifts and Contributions.

Representatives of the Patrol, repre-senting the Patrol Ladies, presented a dona-tion to the General Fund and another dona-tion to the Children’s Hospitals.

The Director’s Staff made a contribu-tion to the General Fund.

The Ballroom Dancing Shrine Club presented donations to both the General Fund and to the Cornerstone Fund.

The Hunt Club, our Kansas City Chiefs Fan Club, presented a donation to the Gen-eral Fund.

No visitors were registered.Three new Nobles were in attendance

and were recognized.Chief Rabban Richard Floyd an-

nounced that parking for Nobles work-ing at the Circus would be available in the

underground garage at a cost of $2.00, with a Shrine membership card. Show your card when exiting the garage and pay the $2.00 charge. By the time the discount parking was negotiated, it was too late to print paper

coupons. Assistant Rabban Wayne Spencer de-

scribed a new fund raising opportunity. We have been approached by a fresh fruit distri-bution company with an offer to supply us with cases of fresh fruit which we can re-sell with a $1.00 profit for Units and Clubs on each package. Each Noble selling fruit would be awarded 10 Crown Jewel points per case sold. Fruit would be delivered be-tween December 15 and December 18. The proposal met with little enthusiasm because of the timing.

A gentleman attending the Festival of Champions approached Assistant Rabban Spencer and gave him a donation to “help the Kids,” which will be credited to the Hospital Transportation Fund.

The Festival of Champions was ex-tremely successful, with 28 high school bands in competition. The event started at 8:30 in the morning, and continued until 10:30 at night. It was a good show and well done. The audience cheered when the Shri-ners walked by.

The Children’s Christmas Party will be held on December 17, from 10:00 am until noon.

Chairman Mike DeGraff reported on the Potentate’s Golf Outing, thanked the workers and the players and presented a check for $3,098.96 to the General Fund.

Noble Buck Johnson, Bingo Chair-man, told us that the Bingo games are not as lucrative as he would like, and then pre-sented a $5,000 check to the General Fund. The players contributed $542 to the Hospi-tal Transportation Fund. Workers are still failing to show up for Bingo work, and the games still need help!

Hospital Chairman Ed Stowell re-ported that van trips were made to Cincin-nati and Chicago at about half the cost of air transportation. Even better, Imperial has received 100 Green Passes from Southwest Airlines, and we got 14 of them as soon as possible. Noble Ed attempted to explain the hospital 3rd Party payment program, and said that we should call Angela Martin, 314-692-6426, for detailed answers to questions. Basically, an insured patient family must pay the insurance co-pay amount. If the family cannot afford the co-pay, or is not in-sured, we’ll work something out. No child will be denied treatment and no family will be badgered or treated disrespectfully. No one will be referred to a collection agency. Treatment will be provided, regardless of the patient’s ability to pay.

Membership Chairman Rod McGrath told us that, at the Imperial Membership Meeting, every Temple with membership increases had established a program of Blue Lodge support. We should follow suit and get our Nobles back into the Blue Lodges.

Bingo Worker Appreciation Night will be held on December 10.

Ballroom Dancers S.C. will hold a Christmas Dance on December 10.

We will hold a Cold Sands Ceremonial on December 16, prior to the Temple Christ-mas Party on the evening of the same day.

The Children’s Christmas Party will be December 17, from 10:00 am till noon.

The theft of water from our Temple has been confirmed, but we have no suspects. Apparently, the theft was from the Fire De-part Connection to our fire protection sprin-kler system. We are looking for a suitable, legal method to secure the connection.

Chaplain Loyd won the half and half drawing, winning $112.00, which he donat-ed to the General Fund.

Chaplain Loyd then gave the benedic-tion.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:05 pm.

Hello Nobles and Ladies. If you are a Northlander we need YOU. We are a great bunch of guys with a WONDERFUL wives group who meet once a month for good food and fellowship

On November 1st we had our regular meeting at the VFW in Claycomo (right there be-side Stroud’s). We started the evening at 5:30 PM with a busy social hour and then at 6:30 PM had an excellent baked ham dinner with scalloped potatoes, peas, plus several salads and dessert. Wow, what a feast! Next month we will have meatloaf. Come enjoy a meal with us.

Prior to dinner President White led us in prayer and then Noble Vice President Dave McLaughlin led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Thanks guys.

Just before the meeting our very own magician, Mrs. Hoesly, conducted her raffle draw-ing for a QT gas card, which was won by our Ambassador Shaun Robinson. He then made a very generous gesture and donated the card back to the club to be sold again. Thank you Sir.

President White opened the meeting at 7:15 PM by introducing Shrine Club Ambassador Shaun Robinson and his lovely Lady. We then discussed the upcoming Circus setup, and we will meet at 9:30 am on Wednesday the 16th to unload and set up the float in front of Municipal Auditorium. Please be there if you can and help. Noble Loyd Newman is going to loan us his generator again so we can have music while the float is parked. Thanks Sir. Howard then re-minded us that the week of the Circus will be busy as we have to get the float out in front of the auditorium on the 16th then on the 19th we will have to pack it up after the start of the afternoon matinee, move it to Zona Rosa to bring in Santa Claus (a nice fund raiser for the club plus

wonderful PR) and then get it back in front of the auditorium before Sunday’s shows start. We will need all available hands to pull that one off and we won’t have Howard to help us, as he will be in the hospital. Best of luck with your surgery and you will be missed. This is the first Circus he will miss in 30 years.

We then held elections for the upcoming year and the following Nobles will fill these seats: Bobbie White/President; Bert Torrey/Vice President; Dave Dowell/Secretary; Richard Graff/Treasurer; Howard Silvers/Float Chairman; Loyd Newman/Circus Chairman; Art Kind-er/Membership Chairman and Ron Owen/Quartermaster. Thanks gentlemen for your service.

Ambassador Robinson then reminded us of upcoming events. Thanks again Sir.We truly miss not seeing many of our old friends from the club. If you haven’t been to a

meeting in a while come on back and see us. We miss your company and need you to keep our club active and functional.

Speaking of Parades and Circus don’t forget that the uniform has changed and we are wearing our red shirts with navy blue pants. If you don’t have your shirt yet let us know so we can get with our Quartermaster (Ron Owen) and get one for you.

Noble President White also asks if you can please make it to the Temple Meetings and wear your Northland Shirt or Fez.

Again, if you want some good food and want to meet some good people come on by our next meeting, December 6th at the VFW in Claycomo. Come join us for dinner before the meeting and visit with old and new friends. Hope to see you there!!!

16 | ARARAT SHRINE NEWS DECEMBER 2011

Can you believe it, 2011 is almost history. I try to take a few minutes everyday and thank God for the many ways he has blessed and rewarded

the efforts of our many volunteers and supporters of the Sedalia Shrine Club. Our Ladies are truly “God Sends” in every way. In this Scribe’s eyes, no one ex-emplifies the “Can Do” spirit more than our core of volunteers. You know who you are, so take pride in yourself, celebrate, and then get back to work. 2012 is on the way. Pray our Creator will continue to use us in accomplishing his will and giving us the means to keep our Children’s Hospitals open.

For those who attended our November Member-ship Dinner, wow, what a meal. Our Ladies spared nothing in the preparation of a traditional Thanksgiv-ing Dinner. Kudos, Ladies.

The Fun Kor again strutted their stuff for Sedalia and our Veterans at the Sedalia Veteran’s Day Parade. It was a good Sedalia turnout to watch a fine Fun Kor turnout. Attaboy guys.

The Sedalia Shrine Club will have an Auc-tion on December 10th and all the proceeds will go to the St. Louis Shrine Hospital. Bring your friends

and neighbors as we have an auditorium full of dolls, toys, Christmas knick knacks, etc. We will need help in moving this stuff around, presenting it to be auc-tioned, so if you can spare some volunteer time, please come and help. A big thank you to Don Weaver for transporting the goods to be auctioned from Warsaw to our club.

Our November General Membership Meeting met for the purpose of electing 2012 Sedalia Shrine Club officers. Your 2012 officers are: Kenny Martin as Secretary, Harold Jackson as Treasurer, Charles Brogden as Vice President and yours truly as Presi-dent.

Please get behind these guys and support your club. Together we can accomplish great things in 2012.

Please don’t forget our monthly Breakfasts on the first Saturday of every month from 7:00 am to 10:00 am. These are essential fundraisers for the financial survival of this club. Kitchen and set-up help are need-ed so please come out and help.

Pray for the New Year, our sick and disabled, and a special prayer for those brave men and women in service to this great nation.

Well, here we are in the month of May, which meansthe parade season has started. Hope that everyone hada good time at Missouri City and Richmond.

Let’s go back a couple of months for a minute. InMarch, Noble Art Kinder brought his grandson to O.B.rehearsal. We all got to meet him and made him welcome. He really seemed to enjoy watching his granddad play, however I think that might have made Art a little nervous.Art had said before we got started that his grandsonwas here visiting from Canada. It seemed to me that wemight have a future Master Mason in the works.

On a sad note, that month we also lost our last char-ter member of the O.B., Noble Loren Lundy. Hepassed away at the young age of 100, a milestonewhich he turned last August. All our prayers and goodwishes go out to the rest of his family. He was oneNoble that stood out above the rest in every way possible. He is truly missed.

Next we have a little bit about the O.B. SpringDance. It may not have been the best turnout we haveever had, but President Waco still did an outstandingjob. He made sure that those who did make it reallyhad a good time; so, “Hats off and job well done,” toour President. And let’s not forget our ladies for having the Silent Action in the back of Bennett; “A

GREATBIG THANK YOU,” from President Wacoand the rest of us as well.

Now how about the month of April? Hmmmm, let’ssee! It was reported that our President Waco, who alsoplays the bass drum, is very versatile. He can scratchhis back with one hand and continue to play well withthe other. Who knew?

On another note, the O.B. would like to welcomeback Noble Don Lanning. He took a trip to Englandfor a little while but had to come back because he didnot have a visa to be able to stay longer. He said that hewas having a great time over there with his wife, andgot to go and see his son as well. So all in all the tripmay have been short but the time was well spent.

Just to touch a little bit on the Swap Meet, the O.B.had a pretty good turnout to help in all areas from thepop wagon to picking up trash. President Waco wouldjust like to say, “THANKS GUYS.” He couldn't havedone it without us. Saturday was the best day. It wascrowded but we all managed to make it through.Sunday was not as busy, but still a pretty good turnout. So from the nobles of the Oriental Band to all of thenobles that were able to make it, GREATJOB! Hopeto see you in the fall for the next one.

Provost NewsBY BILL HUFFMAN, SCRIBE

Noble Milford Eddingfield, “Frog” was born on January 21, 1936 in Elkland, Missouri. In his teenage years Frog worked for his Dad in the summer months. His Dad was a roofer, so

he was accustomed to hard work early in life.In 1953, Noble Eddingfield graduated from Ruskin High

School, and for the next five years he stayed busy working to sup-port himself. He was like many young men, searching for what would become his career. In 1958, Frog entered the United States Army and served in the Combat Engineers. Although he did well as a soldier, he decided against that being his chosen field.

Frog hired on at General Motors in 1961, and knew he had found his niche. For the next 20 years he worked on the production line. When the opportunity came for him to enter the Outside Main-

tenance Department he didn’t hesitate, and the 12 years that followed were hard work, but he enjoyed the outdoors. In 1993, Frog retired from General Motors after 32 years.

Noble Eddingfield and Lady Judy have a son, Tony. Frog speaks very highly of Tony, who is in the computer field. Listening to him discuss Tony’s work, you sense the pride only a father has for his son. Lady Judy shares that pride. A great team and proud parents.

In 1977 Noble Eddingfield joined the Blue Lodge, entering Heroine #104. He worked the Chairs, and was made the Worshipful Master in 1985. He is currently a member of Ivanhoe Lodge #446. He is an Endowed Member. 1977 was also the year that Frog was created in Ararat Shrine. The same year, 1977, Frog became a member of the Provost Team. The Forrest Kenny Award was bestowed on Noble Eddingfield in 2002, that being the first year for the award. I don’t remember who, but Frog was approached one evening while he was on duty at the Temple working security, and told that he was being made a Sgt. His response was, “I’ve been a Sergeant for 20 years”, so they responded, “okay, then you are now a Lieuten-ant”. Since that evening, Frog has risen to the rank of Major. He served as Past Patron of the Eastern Star in 1980, and Past High Priest of the York Rite.

At present, Frog is not quite as busy, but still works with the Provost Team on most of the outside events, including Parades, Swap Meets, and the Circus. To quote him, he is “looking forward to the Circus”.

When I asked if he had any comments to cap off our visit, he kept it simple and made the following statement, “I have enjoyed being in the Shrine all these years.”

It has been my pleasure to have been a part of this story.Until next time, God Bless.

Ararat Motor CorpsBY JIM kERNS, SCRIBE

We are finally taking a deep breath after a long 8 months of fun and hard work. Our wheels started turning in April and finally slowed down in November. We practiced drills for

hours in the heat of summer, enjoyed the smiles of kids at the parades, cooked hamburgers for our good friends at Worth Harley Davidson and customers, all for making a difference. We were able to donate $5,000 to the Hospital Transportation Fund as well as several donations to Ararat General Fund. WOW!! How good it is to be a Motor Corpsman!! A very special thanks to our ladies who worked right beside us.

Our 2012 officer elections were held and we welcome “Doc” Gay back as President and Guisppe Baldin as Secretary/Treasurer. One of our new members who has worked incredibly hard on our events, Ron Facklam, was elected Vice President.

With heavy heart President Doc accepted Woody Woodward’s re-quest for Veteran status. For 17 years Woody, pictured at right, has put his heart and soul into Ararat Motor Corps. He has held positions of President and Director, as well as had the distinguished honor of being President of International Association of Shrine Motor Corps. We thank Woody for all his hard work, dedication and friendship.

We look forward to a great 2012 riding season. But for now, we will sit back, relax a bit, and enjoy each other’s company.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

NOBODY TOLD ME!By, Steve Dowdy

I went to the Potentate’s Ball last month, but it was too late for me to write about it.It wasn’t too late to get the pictures in thepaper, but I couldn’t write fast enough.

We’ve always liked the Potentate’s Ball, probably because Jerri likes to get dressedup, and when she’s happy, it’s easy for meto get happy. Besides that, wearing a tuxe-do makes me feel like James Bond! Ofcourse, it’s not the getting beat up twice inevery movie that I like to imagine, butthere’s enough other cool stuff to keep myinner Walter Mitty quite happy.

This time, the ball was a masqueradeparty. We only wore masks on our faces, unless you count the James Bond outfit. Ithought that would be the silliest thing Iever did, but I was wrong. I was reallywrong! I was great! Shriner’s wives arebeautiful anyway, but the air of mystery

added something special. Then, the Nobleslooked like some kind of royalty in theirmasks. I didn’ t have much trouble identi-fying anybody, but it was fun to pretend.

The decorations were certainly impressive, and the food was outstanding. I’m sure thatsomebody got something he didn’t like, butthat’s the way the world works. It’s reallydifficult to prepare good food for that manypeople, and it’s even more difficult trying toserve that many people, keeping the foodwarm and not dropping a plate in anyone’s lap.

Then came the band. Asmall band fromJoplin, of all places. As far as I know,Joplin has never been the music capital ofthe free world, but with this band, they’vegot a pretty good chance. The band wascalled “Diversity,” and it was appropriate. They played stuff that the old guys like meenjoyed, and they played stuff that the several

young people in the attendance really liked. There were several “kids” at the ball,

some of them were family of the Divan, some were young Nobles and Ladies, andsome were sons and daughters of Nobles.Whoever they were, they danced andlaughed and behaved politely while havinga lot of fun. Some of them even dancedwith Nobles old enough to be their fathers, and at least one young lady talked one ofour dance divas into giving her dance les-sons. Lady Eva Horrell seemed to be hav-ing as much fun as her student. It was greatseeing such a diverse group dancing to aband called Diversity. Can’t you just pic-ture them telling their friends that those oldpeople really know how to have fun!

It taught me that we can attract youngmen to the Nobility, and we can enjoy beingaround each other. That means a lot to our

fraternity. Too many young men look at usand think that they have nothing in com-mon with us. My own son, a Noble him -self, doesn’t like to come to our parties anddances because he doesn’t like “our music.”We need to find common ground, and itwas there at the Potentate’s Ball.

I think a lot of the credit must go to theFirst Lady, because I just don’t seeIllustrious Sir Kevin putting all of thattogether by himself. But, with LadyDianna’s help, and guidance, he threw ahelluva party! They’re quite a pair!

If we, the Nobility of Ararat Shrine, cancontinue in that tradition, we are going tohave a fantastic year. We CAN have fun whilehelping our kids, and it’s time we did so.

FOOD & WINEBy, Steve Dowdy

Last month we talked about the labelsthat they stick on a bottle of wine. So nowyou should have a little knowledge of howto read a wine label. But that doesn’ t helpmuch unless you know something about thetaste of the wine. Some wines simply tastebetter with some foods.

Conventional wisdom has been to drinkred wines with red meat, and white wineswith “white” meat. But what to you drinkwith ham? Ham looks pink to me, but noexpert ever says you should drink pink winewith anything. That could be because“pink” is called “blush,” but I really suspectthat it’s mostly snobbery.

The most important aspect of pairingfood and wine is not color, but “body.”Delicate or lightly flavored foods work bestwith light bodied wines. Stronger, heavierfoods should be paired with medium to fullbodied wines. There are several, perhapsmany, schemes to help evaluate which winegoes with which food, but the most reliableis simply “personal taste.” But personaltaste must be developed, so let’s look for astarting point.

The old rule of red with red and whitewith white works to some degree, butthere’s a lot of room for experimentation. For one point of confusion, all red winesdon’t taste the same, and neither do allwhite wines. Sometimes this approachworks, but there might be a better way.

Another approach to pairing is to try toreflect the character of the food with thecharacter of the wine. Some fish dishes, such as broiled salmon, have a very robustflavor, and pair very well with a robustwine such as a Pinot Noir. And veal fits in

with a Sauvignon Blanc like beer with hotdogs. Maybe I should tell you that PinotNoir is a deep red and Blanc means“white.”

Don’t forget that sauces have a great dealto do with pairing because they can com -pletely change the taste and texture of thefood. Alightly flavored sauce can comple-ment a delicate wine, but a more robustsauce needs a heavier wine with more body.

Of course, this is Kansas City, and we eata lot of barbeque. Folks, I don’t know whatwine to suggest with barbecued ribs or beefbrisket. Some full-bodied, red wine with alot of character would probably be best, maybe a Pinot Noir or even a Shiraz? I’vehad some wonderful Shiraz, and I’ve hadsome that were too spicy. How aboutChampagne? White Zinfandel probablywon’t work for me, but you might like it.Go ahead and try something and don’tblame me. Tell me if it works.

The important thing about all of this is totry something, and if you don’t like it, don’tdo it again. You will probably find that agood red wine is best with steak, and a goodwhite wine is best with chicken. Chiantigoes well with most Italian dishes, andLiebfraumilch might be good with Germanfood. I don’t know any good Mexican winethat complements tamales or tacos.

The “rules” of wine drinking don’t evenqualify as suggestions these days. But theyprobably deserve more than lip service.Respect the judgment of those who havemade mistakes before you, and think abouttheir choices before you make your ownmistake. Of course, you can always spit itout and order something else.

Greeter NewsBY DARYL kRAUSE

“It’s Never Been Greater To Be An Ararat Greeter”.

The 2011 year is coming to an end and the vote is in. The New Officer-Elects for 2012 Greeters are: President-Elect Noble Da-ryl Krause, Vice-President-Elect Noble Don Wilson, Secretary-Elect Noble Harry Mar-shal and Treasurer-Elect Past Grand Master/

Noble Rocky Weaver. Congratulations to the new Officers-Elect and a special thanks to 2011 President Doug Urie and Director Chuck Hotchkiss for a fantastic year.

The 2011 Greeter’s Fall Formal was held on Saturday, November 12th in A&B at Ararat and what a way to finish out the year. George & Dee Underwood put on one of the best For-mals EVER at Ararat, from the decorations to the meal and on to the entertainment. Upon entering the formal you were immediately greeted by President Doug / Lady Linda and George / Lady Dee with a hearty hand shake

and beautiful corsages for the Ladies. Once thru the entryway came a super spread of wine fountains with cheese & cracker appetizers that was second only to the superb decorating of the room.

How about Illustrious Sir “BJ” Rich-ardson and the Ararat Restaurant Staff? The steak & potato dinner tickled your taste buds starting with the fresh garden salad and fin-ishing with the champagne cake with rasp-berry sauce. A big Kudos goes out to them for the fast and professional service they pro-vided.

After the dinner we danced the night away to a remarkable group called “Oasis”. George kept the dance floor full as this group performed everyone’s favorite music. All you have to do is look at the pictures to see that from start to finish a great time was had by all.

There could have been no better way for the Greeters to start the Holiday Season than this Formal. If you missed it you missed one of the best parties of the year!

Because of the talents of George and Dee I can say…“It’s Never Been Greater To Be An Ararat Greeter.”

RAKLA SHRINE CLUBBy Ernie Taylor, Scribe

Amateur Radio Shrine ClubBY RONALD NUTTER, SECRETARY

Even though winter is still a few weeks off, there have been several weather events that have made significant impact on the infrastructure we depend on, such as cell phone and internet connectivity. This is an area where Amateur Radio can step in and do just about

anything. Depending on the extent of the winter season we may have this year, we might see some outages ourselves. For those who are interested in learning more about Amateur Radio and how it can help in the event of an emergency and how you can meet others who are in another part of the country or the world with minimal equipment, please get in touch with myself or anyone in the Amateur Radio Club and we will be glad to help you get started on the path on a hobby that has something for just about everyone.

For the new Nobles that haven’t looked at the Amateur Radio Club, please get in contact with anyone in the club and come to one of our next meetings. You will find a great group of people to get to know and experience a hobby that will take you places limited only by your imagination and ingenuity. When nothing else works, Amateur Radio will!
