1 Well, this is two editions in a row! I call that a good start. I’ve received some good verbal feedback and people seem to be happy Kol Shalom is back. I cannot stress how critical your input will be to the continuance of this venture. I would like to see Kol Shalom becoming a place where we can all share ideas, opinions, thoughts, and suggestions regarding the issues of the day within both our synagogue and our Louisville Jewish Community. You write it, I’ll print it! Just let’s be respectful, and I will edit for length if necessary. As we sit together with family, old friends, and new guests, around the Seder table on Friday night, let’s all take a moment to reflect on our blessings and to give thanks for all that has been given to us, and to acknowledge our responsibility to hand our tradition on L’DOR VA’DOR. L'DOR VA'DOR – WE NEED YOUR HELP ON THIS ONE The Hebrew term l'dor va'dor literally means "from generation to generation". A major component of the work of a synagogue community is passing traditions on to keep them alive, l'dor vador, from generation to generation. Do you have siblings, children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, aging relatives, know students away at college, or have friends who you wish were more connected? If so, we would like to know and maybe to help. No hard sell, no requests for commitment, just a reaching out to let people know that there is a Jewish community that cares and will always be here if they decide they might need it. If this is of interest to you contact me at [email protected], or contact me by mail, or leave a message at the Temple Shalom office. You can also contact Rabbi.

COMMUNITY GARDEN IDEA GENERATES

NO INTEREST! Well, there was one, but one person is not enough to make this happen. I’ll ask again next year.

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE KOL SHALOM PUBLISHER FOR A MONTH?

Contact me and tell me which month you would like to take. First come, first served. You take it all for one month and have sole authority in content, and editing, no conditions, no negotiating.

Schedule of Events sponsored by The Temple

• Monday, April 23 at 7 p.m. in the library Rabbi Zohar will address the topic, “The Woman at the Window,” an intertextual study examining the feminine motif in the Bible, including issues of relationships, gender, ancient power dynamics and politics.

• Wednesday, April 25 at 9:30 a.m. in the Klein Center Rabbi Zohar will speak on Jewish-Arab co-existence in the Galilee.

• Thursday, April 26 at 1 p.m. at The Temple’s Senior University RSVP required to 502-423-1818 Rabbi Zohar will lead a session on Reform Kabbalah, examining how ancient spiritual kabbalistic teachings are integrated into contemporary Reform theology and spiritual practice. Feliza Zohar will talk about “embodied prayer,” the practice of connecting holistically, mind-body-and-spirit, to the prayer experience. She will explore how noticing and performing these gestures with intention might enrich the prayer experience.

• Friday, April 27 at 7 p.m. in Waller Chapel The Zohars will lead a musical Shabbat with The Temple musicians. They will sing original sacred music, showcasing an authentic musical voice from Israeli Reform congregations.

• Saturday, April 28 at 9 a.m. Rabbi Zohar will lead Torah study on Acharei Mot-Kedoshim.

WOTS UP? By Sandy Flaksman

Yum! Fresh, real rye bread! Real corned beef, pastrami! Pickles, too! Indeed, the first-ever WOTS Shapiro’s Deli Meat Sale will be the perfect way to say goodbye to matzah, matzah and more matzah! Grand kudos to Ellen Gray who worked with Shapiro’s in Indianapolis and will accompany Kathy Karr to Indy to bring back our goodies. A big thanks to all those who made phone calls to help increase sales. And more importantly, to those who purchased items and supported WOTS. If you missed it, keep your taste buds for future sales.

Please join WOTS for our Sisterhood Sabbath on Friday, April 27 at 6:30. We will read Torah on that Friday and a catered Oneg Shabbat to follow. Sheilah Abramson-Miles chairs the program, and Susan Glazer is compiling the service. We are thrilled that Amy Niren will be our song leader and Ann Niren, our accompanist. Sisterhood members will act as readers in both English and Hebrew. Thank you to all and to Rabbi Jacowitz Chottiner for help with Torah her support and guidance.

HOLOCAUST EDUCATION BILL PASSED BY STATE LEGISLATURE

In a remarkable event at the Kentucky State Capitol the Kentucky Senate passed a bill making instruction of the Holocaust mandatory in Kentucky public schools by a vote of 37-0. The Governor is expected to sign it into law.

The passage of the bill was due in large part to many years of effort by Holocaust Educator and teacher at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Middle School in Louisville, Fred Whittaker. The bill was named for Fred Gross and Ann Klein (z’l), holocaust survivors. The bill succeeds a precursor bill named after holocaust survivor Ernie Marks (z’l) which encouraged holocaust education in Kentucky schools but was non-mandatory.

In the lower right of the picture, taken in the chamber, are Fred Gross and Temple Shalom’s Linda Klein, daughter of Ann. To the left of Fred is Rabbi Beth Jacowitz Chottiner.

Fred Whittaker will be guest speaker at Temple Shalom’s Erev Shabbat service on Friday April 13th.

DONATIONS

Donations are to synagogue life what oxygen is to our bodies. They help to maintain our infrastructure, keep the lights on, and to support those special projects that wouldn’t happen were it not for our donors’ generosity.

For all of the months that we have been without Kol Shalom we have not had a way to thank our donors and to let you know how important your Tzedakah contributions have been to both Temple Shalom and the wider community.

As you know there is no word in Hebrew for “charity” in the typical Western sense of the word. Tzedakah means justice or righteousness and is to Jews a moral imperative. To give Tzedakah is something we do out of responsibility, not largesse.

We went back through our records and developed the list of donors from July 1, 2017 to date. It was a time-consuming task and because of that I am only able to list donors’ names here, and the funds that they supported, but not the dedications that accompanied the donations. I apologize for that and for any errors in the presentation of names (e.g. Mr. & Mrs. Keiron O'Connell rather than Paula & Keiron O’Connell), or for any missing names. If you find errors or omissions please let me know. When anonymity has been requested, I have tried to honor that request.

Beginning next month, we will revert to publishing donors and dedications on a monthly basis.
