Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,�

�

� Elijah and Peter each encountered the Lord in an unusual

way in today’s readings. Elijah expected the Lord to come in the

wind, in an earthquake, or with fire, but instead it was in a tiny

whispering sound. The Lord appeared like a ghost to the disciples

during a storm and Peter dared to walk across the raging sea.�

How do we encounter the Lord?�

Monday is the Feast of Saint Lawrence. He was a deacon.�

He was roasted over an open fire, yelling out “I’m done on this side. Turn me over.”�

Tuesday is the Feast of Saint Clare. She was a fr iend and follower of Saint Francis. She formed�

a group of women known as the Poor Clares. She served them like Christ, the servant king.�

�

Wednesday is the Feast of Saint Jane Frances de Chantal. She was a young woman when she became�

a widow. She founded the Order of the Visitation, a religious order for the widowed, old and ill.�

�

Thursday is the feast of Saints Pontian and Hippolytus.�

They were at odds during their lives but reconciled in the end.�

�

Friday is the Feast of Saint Maximillian Kolbe. He chose a young father �

at random for freedom of starvation by the Nazi captors.�

Saturday is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. IT IS NOT A HOLY DAY�

OF OBLIGATION THIS YEAR! Catholics believe that God assumed Mary’s body into heaven. Byzantine Christians

call today the “Dormition” or “Falling asleep.” Still others call today her “Harvesting” into heaven. Pope Pius XII

declared the Assumption a dogma of the faith in 1950 to remind us that creation is good, we are good!�

THE PRESENCE OF GOD�

� After the miracle of Jesus walking on water, the

disciples exclaimed, “Truly, you are the Son of God.”

Most Christians will probably never experience such a

dramatic miracle. Like Elijah, we await the manifesta-

tion of God in other moments. Perhaps the biggest chal-

lenge for the believer is to be constantly attuned to the

possible presence of God in the everyday events of life.

This is a stance that takes some people years to develop.

Others seem to find the Lord easily in the simple things.

As the week unfolds, let us look for the presence of God

in the little things around us. Perhaps, like Elijah, we

will be surprised at what we find; and, like the disciples,

we can add our voice to the confession, “Truly you are

the Son of God.”�

�

INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK�

� There is something very sacred about silence.

Silence connects us. It is where the heartbeat of all of

creation � and its life blood and source � are embraced

and where oneness is experienced. When in the presence

of an environment that is silent, the worries, tribulations,

struggles, and challenges of life seem to fade away and

we can experience a peaceful whisper. We can call that

whisper God. Through the practice of contemplative

prayer, we can find our way to that inner place of silence

even in the midst of great distraction, busyness, and

noise. The silence becomes one with us and grounds us.

When we become friends with silence, friends with God,

we can hear the gentle whisper of God’s voice saying,

“Come, stay here. Trust me and you will not fall.”�

�

PRACTICE OF HOPE�

� God meets us in the most unexpected places,

sometimes in the tiny whisper as at the cave at Horeb,

sometimes in the midst of the storm�tossed sea. When

we find ourselves in deserted places, we seek to have the

courage to meet the Lord in whatever way he appears and

allow ourselves to be transformed. Seek inspiration in

the witness of those whose lives have been transformed

by their encounter with God. Who has been an example

for you, showing courage to meet God wherever God

chooses to be revealed? �

� Consider the new perspective that emerged from

Thomas Merton’s openness to encountering God. In

Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander, he wrote of standing

on a corner in Louisville, Kentucky, and realizing that he

is at one with each person there. Contemplative prayer is

nothing else than a close sharing between friends; it

means taking time frequently to be alone with him who

we know love us.” (CCC #2709, quoting St. Teresa of

Avila). Seek to encounter God as a friend and rest in the

knowledge of God’s love for you.�

Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, it will not be possible

to hold the Summer Celebration this year. Both the Car

Show and Labor Day Festival are cancelled. A couple

of alternate ideas are being considered for September and

October. More information will follow.�

�

Affidavit for volunteers and Virtus. If you don’t have a

The Saint Francis of Assisi Christian Mothers will meet

at 6:30 pm on Thursday, August 13, at the social hall in

� On Saturday, August 15, we celebrate the feast of

the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven.

Because she belonged to Christ, Mary, our queen, is

raised on high, a great sign for all who believe in her Son.

This is Mary’s greatest feast! It is the solemnity of her

death, burial and resurrection � her Passover. It is also the

patronal feast of the Diocese of Greensburg.�

�

� Celebrating Mary’s Assumption into Heaven

strengthens our belief that the human body is sacred and

destined for glory. Just as Christ was raised from the

dead in bodily form, we recognize that when she fell

asleep in death, Mary was also raised bodily into heaven.

Assumption Day is sometimes thought of as Mary’s

“harvesting” into heaven and is a day to thank God for the

bounty of growing things. The blessing of flowers, herbs

and garden produce is traditional this day.�

�

This year this Holy Day is NOT a day of obligation.�

�

Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus � Song of Heaven�

� The words of the Sanctus are rooted in scripture.

They recall the song of the seraphim in the Isaiah’s vision

of God in majesty and the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ en-

try into Jerusalem, yet the liturgy adds something new to

these ancient texts. The seraphim sang, “the earth is

filled with his glory” but the liturgy proclaims, “heaven

and earth are full of your glory.”�

� In the Eucharist, earth and heaven meet. For a

moment in time, we join in the song that the angels sing

for all time. The Sanctus raises us to heaven but does not

remove us from the earth. It is the song of the King who

took on our human flesh so that we might share in His

divine life.�

�
