B.Sc. (Cairo 1950)

Ph.D. (Leeds 1957)
Dr. Amin Ghali has published over 200 papers and 4 books in the fields of structural analysis and
design. His books have been published in seven languages. His research is mainly related to
concrete structures. He is co-inventor of Stud Shear Reinforcement (SSR), to increase the shear
resistance and the ductility of concrete slabs, footings, rafts and walls. The SSR has been used in
hundreds of structures in many countries.
Research topics have been: strength of flat slabs, deflections, time-dependent deformations of
reinforced and prestressed structures, partially prestressed structures, componite members,
bridges, storage tanks, thermal effects, seismic effects and serviceability of steel or FRP-
reinforced concrete structures (deformations and cracking). Research on serviceability is in part
included in Ghali, A., Favre, R., and El-Badry, M., Concrete Structures: Stresses and
Deformations, 3rd ed., 2002, 605 pp.
Current research is on ultimate strength of prestressed members, external prestressing, stability
of continuous frames including effects of cracking, creep, shrinkage and relaxation, ductility and
strength of members reinforced with double head studs, seismic behaviour of flat-slab structures
and on a new 5th edition of Ghali, A. and Neville, A.M., Structural Analysis, 4th ed., 1997, 854
pp.
Consulting activities on major projects have included three offshore platforms in the North Sea,
major bridges in Canada, France and Bahrain and the Northumberland Strait bridge connecting
Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.

Biography
Adel Sedra joined the faculty of the University of Toronto in 1969, rising to the rank of professor
in 1978. During 1986-1993, he served as chair of the department of electrical engineering (now
electrical and computer engineering). On July 1, 1993 he assumed the position of vice-president,
provost, and chief academic officer of the University of Toronto and served in this capacity for
nine years, leading the university through two major long-range planning cycles, in 1994 and
1999.
On July 1, 2003, Sedra joined the University of Waterloo as dean of the Faculty of Engineering
where he led the Vision 2010 academic planning process.
Sedra has co-authored about 150 papers and three textbooks, including Microelectronic Circuits,
which is now in its fifth edition and in 10 languages, with well over one million copies in print.
