Annual Appreciation Gathering for the Retired Ministers and �eir Spouses

The annual appreciation gathering for the RetiredMinisters and their spouses was held on November 6,2019. 13 retired ministers and spouses attended thisyear’s gathering.TheOpeningServicewasheldHonpaHongwanjiHawaiiBetsuin.At the service,BishopEricMatsumoto and Mr. Pieper Toyama expressed theirappreciationonbehalfofthecurrentactiveministersandthemembersofHHMH.

Nembutsu Followers.Yes, I am imperfect and negativeimpulses and self-centered thoughts do not disappearuntilbirthinthePureLand,butthereisalsosomethinghappeningasweliveourlife,daytoday.

IhavebeenemphasizingthatthelifeofaShinBuddhistis one of responding in gratitude to the Wisdom andCompassion of Namo Amida Butsu by reciting theNembutsuandtryingtoliveourlifeguidedbytheDharmaasitisoneoftheTenBenefitswereceiveinthepresentlife.However,ourrespondingingratitudeisalsotheworkingsofAmidaBuddha.Tobesure,itisIwhoisrespondingingratitude,butfurtherIamalsobeingnurturedbytheLightofAmidaBuddha.Infact,thesourceofanythingpositiveorgoodcomesaboutbecauseofAmidaBuddha’sLight(s)whichisilluminatingus.IntheLargerSutra,itsaysthat“Sentient beings who encounter this light have the three defilements swept away, and they become soft and gentle in body and mind. They dance with joy, and the good mind arises (underline is mine) in them. When those suffering pain and travail in the three evil courses see this light, they all find respite and are freed of afflictions. After their lives have ended, they all gain emancipation.” The key words here are “find respite” and “freed from the afflictions” and the Chinese character for “see” which also has the meaning of to “meet” or “encounter.” WearebeingnurturedandencouragedbyAmidaBuddha’s12Lights.

Let us, as individuals, but also, collectively, as theHongwanji Sangha respond in gratitude! The Sanghamustcometolife!WhatismostimportantisrecitingtheNembutsuinawareness,joyandgratitudeandtryingtoliveguidedbytheDharma.Inordertodothis,wemustknowwhat theDharma orTeaching is saying.Thus, IhumblyaskthatyoutogetherwithotherfamilymembersandfriendscometolistentotheBuddha-Dharmawhichcanenrichalloflives.Imperfectaswemaybe,itisourhumble,respectful,warmandharmoniousrelationshipsand interactions with people that is one of the crucialelementsinthesharingofJodoShinshuwithothers.

NamoAmidaButsu/EntrustinginAll-InclusiveWisdomandAll-EmbracingCompassion.

Jikoen Joya-ENew Year’s Eve ServiceDecember 31, 2019 6:00 p.m. Please join us with family and friends to greet the New Year on Monday, December 31 at 6:00 p.m. for Jikoen’s New Year’s Eve Service and ringing of the bell. 

Generally, this is a time for re�ection! A year end service to bring the year to a close. 

It gives us an opportunity to re�ect on the past year and to rejoice with gratitude the life we have at the present time! 

Come and celebrate the end of 2019 and welcome the beginning of 2020 with us! 

Refreshments of saimin, sparkling cider and sweets will be served following the service.
