FIFTY OF Australia’s highest performing agents have just returned from Abu Dhabi following a six-day customised experience of the UAE’s capital city.

Run in partnership with Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi), Etihad Airways and Virgin Australia, the visit is the first of its two-part ‘Mega Famil’ series open to Australian agents in the coming year.

The agents were selected on the basis of their sales performance and attendance at trade events run by TCA Abu Dhabi. The attendees from across Australia were split into three different groups, experiencing luxurious accommodation, culinary

delights and attractions from across the diverse destination.

Some of the emirates’ most well-known tourist attractions were included on the itinerary, such as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Yas Waterworld and the Al Jahili Fort in the oasis city of Al Ain.

Participants were also treated to an exclusive welcome function inside the world’s highest suspended presidential suite at St Regis Abu Dhabi alongside a desert resort stay at Qasr Al Sarab by Anantara or Tilal Liwa Hotel located in the Al Gharbia region.

“With the recent broadcast of X Factor

Australia in Abu Dhabi, the visit of these high performing agents came at a time when Abu Dhabi was top of mind for Australian consumers,” said Michael Woods, TCA Abu Dhabi Country Manager Australia. “We’ve enjoyed showing the agents how amazing a holiday or stopover here can be and I’m confident that this will lead to them including more trips to Abu Dhabi when planning client itineraries.”

The second ‘Mega Famil’ instalment has been set for April 2016 and is expected to link in with a new e-learning platform TCA Abu Dhabi has been tipped to release in the coming months.

PROdUCT MANAGERS lEARN THE WISdOM OF THE SOlOMONS

THE SOlOMON Islands Visitors Bureau (SIVB) has staged a major tourism product update for key wholesale partners in Australia.

Organised in conjunction with Solomon Airlines, the event aimed to build on the ongoing promotion of the destination in this market.

The group of senior product managers participated in a mini-travel mart at the Heritage Park Hotel in Honiara where they had the opportunity to meet with their local counterparts. These included local hotel and resort management from across the Solomon Islands plus a number of inbound tour operators, transport

providers and culturally oriented tour companies. The group also visited Gizo in the destination’s Western Province region.

Josefa ‘Jo’ Tuamoto, CEO of the SIVB, said he was confident both the product update and relationship building would pay dividends for the destination in 2016.

“This year we have set an international visitation target of 25,000 staying an average length of 15 days, the bulk of which we expect to see come from Australia and New Zealand,” he said.

“We are being very direct in what we see we need to do in order to attract more visitation and one of the key objectives has been to further impress upon our industry colleagues in both countries the ever-building appeal the Solomon Islands offers.

“We must continue to do everything we can to propel our country’s tourism fortunes into the future and this week’s event is a solid example of how we plan to achieve our goals.”

International visitation to the Solomon Islands in May exceeded all expectations with numbers for the month increasing by close on 15 per cent. Figures show arrivals reached 1,681, an increase of 14.9 per cent over the 1,462 total achieved for the same period in 2014.

WHO’S THE OFFICE JOKER/MOST ANNOYING PERSON IN THE OFFICE: Scott, our only man in the office. He enjoys having a laugh and gets easily embarrassed with all our girly talk. He has a small hole-puncher that doesn’t work very well, or so we told him, LOL. He really wanted a bigger one!

FUNNIEST THING THAT’S HAPPENEd IN THE OFFICE: Our office team photo was being taken by another staff member. One of the girls didn’t have the correct shirt on so had to swap with the lady taking the photo. We all smiled and the camera went click… just as the girl taking the photo’s shirt burst open to reveal her lovely purple bra. We all laughed our head off while Scott, our token male, was more embarrassed. Needless to say it was a very funny team photo.

bEST CHRISTMAS PARTY EvER: Drinking champagne while on stand-up paddle boats floating along Currumbin Creek on a Saturday afternoon. All our families were there with us, relaxing with the kids swimming and watching the sun set. It’s often the simple things in life. Friends, water, sunsets and CHAMPAGNE! What else could you ask for?

FAvOURITE Tv SHOWS IN THE OFFICE: An Idiot Abroad as we can all relate to that person at times. We also have a good catch up on Game of Thrones.

MAIN WATER COOlER TOPICS IN THE OFFICE: We mainly practice our yoga poses at the water cooler. Nothing like a bit of downward dog with a drink of water.

bIGGEST CHANGES YOU’vE SEEN IN THE TRAvEl INdUSTRY: The world is easier to access so people are going to more amazing destinations and having truly exotic journeys. We find we are discovering new destinations through the requests of our clients...it’s always good to keep discovering and learning. Our thanks to Dale Schultz for these answers.

SWISS TRAvEl SYSTEM lAUNCHES IMPROvEd TRAdE CORNER

THE SWISS Travel System (STS) has upgraded its Trade Corner to provide agents with a better platform for information, news, offers and online assistance relating to the country’s extensive public transport network.

Re-launched in September, the Trade Corner features a new look and feel, offering greater user experience and more comprehensive content. There are

six main subject categories that serve to assist agents and tour operators with any information on the system, which includes the full range of STS product prices and specialised fact sheets plus the latest information and deals on Switzerland’s national rail network.

THE lAUNCH OF A NEW PORTAl IS SOMETHING TO GET EXCITEd AbOUTAS A result of its annual travel agent survey, Excite Holidays has launched its brand new training and information portal.

The online travel wholesaler has responded to calls for more in-depth industry knowledge by launching a portal with destination information and travel guides which agents can utilise to improve their own knowledge or pass onto their clients to add value to a booking.

The site will also feature in-depth interviews with industry experts, selling hints and tips, the wholesaler’s latest incentives and famil opportunities, quizzes and competitions, as well as the company’s latest technology innovations.

“We want to help agents become subject matter experts and enable them to gain business, increase revenue and close

more sales,” said Joana Bonto, Director of Sales and Marketing.

“By providing this additional content both for agents and their clients, we believe we can help our travel agent partners in the ongoing battle to keep their clients and win business from online booking sites.”

The blog can be found at exciteholidays.com/blog

Meanwhile Excite has announced that following consultation with agents it has abolished its fees for cancellations and amendments to bookings.

“We’re recognising the fact that booking travel is dynamic and sometimes subject to changes beyond the control of travel agents,” said Nic Stavropoulos, Managing Director and Co-Founder of Excite.

INSIdER IS HAPPY TO SPREAd THE WORd AbOUT RE-bRANd SUCCESS

ASIA TRAvEl specialist, Insider Journeys, has marked six months since their rebranding with a special dinner for invited agents in Sydney.

Since the global change in February 2015, the company’s Small Group Journey forward sales revenue and passenger numbers are both up more than 10 per cent year on year, particularly in markets like Japan and India, for which new brochures have just been released.

“I’m extremely proud of our results to date since the rebranding,” said Paul Hole, Managing Director of Insider Journeys. “Such a significant rebrand can result in a significant dip in awareness and sales. We have defied this trend and delivered strong results in the first six months since introducing Insider Journeys to the market.”

The evening was also used to announce the release of the company’s latest portfolio of Small Group Journeys.

Highlights include the introduction of a new 14-day ‘Japan Winter Discovery’ tour that focuses on the northern Alps of the country, new ‘Laos and Cambodia Mekong Discovery’ itinerary and a revamp of the 13-day ‘Highlights of Indochina’ journey.

To celebrate the new product, Insider is offering a $250 travel voucher per person for 2016 Small Group Journeys bookings of 10 days or more made before December 15.

“The latest brochure is the result of the combination of the insider knowledge of our exceptional product team and 22 years’ experience,” added Hole. “With over 80 itineraries across 11 countries, there’s truly something for everyone within our range.”

The company hosted a dinner for 100 agents to learn more about the new product, including the new 2015-17 Asian River Cruising brochure. The 90-page guide includes information on three new

ships and has itineraries across Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, India and China.

“We thank the travel agent community for embracing Insider Journeys and we want them to know we value their continued support of Insider Journeys.”

AGENTS FACE THE SHARK TANK ANd WAlK AWAY SMIlINGMARK HARADA reports from Magellan’s annual national conference in Melbourne.

THE FUTURE looks bright for Magellan Travel Group. The organisation reported its seventh straight year of double-digit membership, sales and profit growth at its annual national conference in Melbourne recently.

Over the past financial year, the travel agency group achieved a total transaction value of $860 million and an operating profit of $8.9 million, and also grew to nearly 100 members from some 122 travel agency locations across Australia.

Add to this new branding, a fully overhauled website, an exclusive and ‘market-leading’ protection solution that guards both consumers and agencies from supplier and agency failure, BookSmart, and its ‘Best Non-Branded Travel Agency Group’ award at this year’s National Travel Industry Awards (NTIA).

It is little wonder that Andrew Macfarlane, Chief Executive Officer of Magellan Travel Group, describes the organisation as a “major force” in travel and one that has changed the industry for the better for “every travel agent in Australia.”

Mr Macfarlane also spoke of the Magellan difference, saying that it ultimately comes down to the “value proposition” for agents in the group.

“We will maximise the bottom line profit for the agency by ensuring they get the lion’s share of the supplier incentives that are paid,” Macfarlane said in an interview with Traveltalk at the conference.

Macfarlane added that while other groups have made a business out of members’ profits, Magellan had tried to break the mould by working to ensure profits are made for agents and not from agents. He said the company was able to do this mainly by keeping centralised costs to a minimum and by being member-owned, and not accountable to external shareholders.

Made up of the “high achievers of the industry,” Magellan also offered the chance for members to be part of a niche group of like-minded agents, who all focus on high-end leisure and corporate business and must generate at least $5 million in revenue a year.

Speaking at the conference, Naomi

Simson, CEO of Redballoon and panellist on the Shark Tank TV reality show, told members that agents were the “dream makers” in a wholly worthwhile pursuit, but always needed to keep in mind their “purpose.”

Purpose and passion is contagious, she said, and if you stay the course, it should be easy to convince your clients to “go on the journey with you.”

Ms Simson also stressed the importance of staying curious, keeping an enquiring mind and above all, staying positive. “You’re on the front line, so be positive yourself and you will achieve positive outcomes,” she said.

“I want to help people have more good times, spend time with the people that are important, have a laugh and tick a few things off their bucket list… and I’m pretty sure that’s why you do what you do too.”

The Magellan Travel Group National Conference 2015 was held at the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins.

IndustrytalkTOURISM CHIEFS across Australia have welcomed the appointment of Richard Colbeck (pictured left) as the Minister for Tourism in the new Turnbull government.

Mr Colbeck is a Liberal Senator for Tasmania and came into parliament at the 2001 federal election. His official title is Minister for Tourism and International Education and he has been appointed Minister Assisting the Minister for Trade and Investment.

“I am very excited to have been given the opportunity to move into the ministry in a portfolio that has particular importance for Tasmania,” said Minister Colbeck.

“Tasmania took out almost half of the accolades at the recent national tourism awards and we’ve recently experienced one of the best tourist seasons. I look forward to working with the industry here and around Australia to continue its growth.”

Jayson Westbury, CEO of The Australian Federation of Travel Agents (AFTA), said his organisation was pleased to see the restoration of a dedicated tourism minister to the government.

“The travel and tourism industries are very important industries supporting Australia’s future and it is very appropriate that there is now a minister formally in place once again,” Mr Westbury said.

Peter Shelley, Managing Director of The Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC), said there were real advantages to be gained with a focused minister.

“Unlike most other export sectors, tourism brings its customers to Australia and our industry faces unique barriers to success, and therefore our priorities are different,” he said.

Martin Ferguson, Chairman of Tourism Accommodation Australia (TAA), said the appointment of a new tourism minister was an encouraging sign that the value and importance of tourism was being recognised.

“We will be calling on him to address a number of major issues that require urgent attention to drive future demand and ensure the industry is both competitive and responsive to the changing market conditions.

“With the largest expansion of hotels in Australia for over two decades, there needs to be a clampdown on unregulated commercial accommodation, and there needs to be a continued priority for Government to invest in tourism-related infrastructure, promotion and events to drive future international and domestic demand,” Mr Ferguson said.

NEW FIGURES from VisitBritain reveal the increasing value to the economy of international visitors attending football matches around the country.

The tourism body’s research report, Football Tourism Scores for Britain, shows that the 800,000 international visitors last year who attended a game spent a total of £684 million (approx. $AU1.4 billion) during their time in the country. The research highlights the mass international appeal of Premier League football and its increasingly valuable role as a global draw for visitors to Britain.

Looking at visits to specific stadiums, Old Trafford in Manchester and Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium in London were neck and neck, both receiving 109,000 international visits. Wembley’s popularity has also grown significantly, with visits more than doubling since 2010.

Topping the international league table for visitors who caught a game was the Irish Republic with 121,000. Australia ranks in the top ten with 32,000 Aussie visitors attending a football match during 2014.

“Britain is home to many of the world’s favourite football clubs so it’s no surprise that more and more international visitors are going to football games while they are here,” said Tracey Crouch, UK Tourism Minister.

VisitBritain is offering fans the chance to win a VIP football trip to Britain, including flights, accommodation and VIP match day seats as well as tickets to a selection of attractions. To enter, head to: visitbritain.com/football

THE WORld’S first interactive Antarctic experience giving visitors a taste of the Southern Ocean is set to open in Australia in December.

The ‘Antarctic Journey’ at the Nobbies Centre on Phillip Island in Victoria is a joint venture between Phillip Island Nature Parks and WWF-Australia.

Comprising three levels, the centre will be showcased as the gateway to the southern continent on the uppermost level, finding some interesting links between this temperate island and the frozen lands of Antarctica.

Visitors will then descend into the area

known as ‘The Lab’ where they will be entertained and educated through a range of interactive and informative experiences. Guests will feel the freeze as they enter the Antarctic ‘Chill Zone’, try to sink a bowling ball, compare their thermal image with an Emperor penguin or check out a sea spider under a microscope.

The unique wildlife, ongoing research activities and the critically important conservation values of this remote continent will come alive before their eyes.

The final level is one of complete immersion in a state-of-the-art multimedia experience, an audio visual spectacle

which puts you right in the heart of the action. Thanks to cutting-edge augmented reality technology, visitors can stand on an ice floe and pat a penguin, stroke a seal or marvel at a whale within arm’s reach.

As the first attraction in Australia to share the WWF brand, this development promises to be a world-class addition to the much-loved Penguin Parade, Koala Conservation Centre, Churchill Island Heritage Farm and Wild Oceans EcoBoat tours, all operated by Phillip Island Nature Parks.

I RECENTlY spent a day at Lufthansa’s main operations base in Frankfurt and discovered some fascinating insights into this iconic company and their bold quest to become the first western five-star airline.

As the largest aviation group in the world with an annual turnover of €30 billion (approx. $AU46 billion) and 205,000 passengers daily, Lufthansa is very serious in its five-star quest and is gearing up to make this happen sooner rather than later.

Besides its own passenger airline, Lufthansa is a holding company for several other aviation-related businesses including Austrian Airlines, Germanwings, and Swiss International.

With their ongoing commitment to deliver the ultimate flying experience, including maximum comfort and convenience along with systems to cancel noise and improve air quality and even the taste of your food, Lufthansa are

determined and steadfastly going about achieving their five-star goal.

One of the five founding members of Star Alliance, the world’s largest airline alliance formed in 1997, Lufthansa has recently launched its premium economy service in recognition of the growing gap between first class and economy and the need for something in between.

After benchmarking every other premium economy product in the market they are positioned to be in the top tier of premium economy providers. Add to this a renewed emphasis on customer service and everybody will be smiling. Indeed Lufthansa use the pneumonic ‘Smile’ very effectively – Surpass My Individual Lufthansa Experience!!

I recently experienced the Lufthansa premium economy and for value comfort and service I was definitely smiling. (See my review at traveltalkmag.com.au)

sAteLLIte PoWers uPMunich Airport will open its new satellite terminal in April. The satellite, which broke ground more than three years ago, will be operated jointly by Munich Airport and Lufthansa, which will hold 60 per cent and 40 per cent ownership respectively.

The new facility will have 27 adjacent aircraft park positions, allowing passengers to board flights directly without a bus transfer and increasing the airport’s handling capacity by 11 million passengers per year.

As the satellite will have no public access, check-in, passport control and security screening will take place in Terminal 2. An underground transport system will transfer passengers to the satellite terminal in less than a minute.

SkytalkMAGIC MUNICHWhile Lufthansa strives for their top marks, Munich became Europe’s first airport to gain Skytrax five-star status earlier this year. This coveted title is considered the ‘Oscar’ of the aviation world.

Being a five-star airport means passengers enjoy simplified processes along the entire travel chain, clear signage and easy navigation. Munich sets itself apart from other airports with its excellent service quality, appealing and modern ambiance and outstanding comfort. A key criterion is also impeccable cleanliness in all areas.

Quite simply this is an airport that is an absolute pleasure to hang out in or even have a snooze in style via napcabs – stationary pods you can rent for some quick zzz’s or just some peace and quiet. There’s free tea and coffee, free Wi-Fi and even a supermarket and – wait for it – even its own brewery. Travellers from all over the world and locals alike have been enjoying Airbräu’s Bavarian dishes and freshly brewed beer for more than 15 years.

Naturally, Bavarian cuisine is also on the menu and favourites include Weißwürste (Bavarian-style pork sausage) and roast

pork in a traditional beer sauce. You can take a tour of the brewery or simply sit back and enjoy Europe’s largest covered beer garden. So for this sausage and beer-loving germanophile, it’s my kind of airport.

If you need to work off some of the wonderful beer and sausage then make your way to the Hilton located directly between Terminal 1 and 2 and visit their fantastic Fit & Fly Spa. The 17-metre long daylight-filled pool area is at the heart

of the spa while an air conditioned gym with 130-square-metres of equipment and personal trainers available upon request allow fitness-minded travellers to sneak in a power workout.

The Hilton is one of the best airport hotels I’ve ever stayed in for a stopover. From the transparent palm atrium to the modern, comfortable, quiet rooms, it’s a haven that will prepare you for – or restore you from – your travels.

QANTAS WIll meet increasing demand from Australians travelling to Bali with new direct seasonal services over the Christmas and New Year period.

During December this year and January next year, Qantas will operate four services per week between Sydney and Bali with its B737 aircraft. This adds to Jetstar’s 65 services per week from Australia and will see the Qantas Group operate a total of 603 services over the upcoming peak travel season.

“We know how attractive Bali is as a

holiday destination, so through efficient use of our aircraft, we’ve unlocked more domestic B737 flying time, delivering on our strategy to offer a dynamic and flexible network,” said Gareth Evans, CEO of Qantas International.

“It means we can give customers more choice and cater for the spikes in demand we see over the summer peak.”

On the new seasonal services, Qantas passengers will get a checked baggage allowance, in-flight entertainment and food and beverage, all included as part

of the fare. Economy customers will experience a new dining experience with more choice and faster service. Business passengers will be offered a Rockpool-designed menu and Kate and Jack Spade amenity kits with Aurora Spa ASPAR products.

The services will operate on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from December 4 to January 29, 2016, inclusive with fares starting from $733 return.

lAN AIRlINES has introduced its new Boeing 787-9 fleet on the route from Sydney to Santiago in Chile.

The inaugural Sydney-bound flight from Santiago took place recently, further signalling LAN’s commitment to offering one of the most modern, efficient and diverse fleets in the industry.

The 787-9 model replaces the 787-8, bringing with it more capacity and services to transport 27 per cent more passengers between the two regions. The introduction of Boeing’s newest 787 model follows on from LAN’s successful launch of the 787-8 commercial service on this schedule in April.

“LATAM is continuously looking for new ways to maintain outstanding in-flight

services, leadership and commitment to innovation and technology,” said Patricio Aylwin, Managing Director Asia Pacific, LATAM Airlines Group. “We are delighted to receive this next generation aircraft onto our schedule in the Pacific region as part of a wider initiative.

“The introduction of the 787-9 demonstrates LAN’s continued focus to feature more efficient aircraft across its network and contributes to our plan of expanding our capacity and presence in this region.”

The airline has configured the new cabin with 283 economy class seats and 30 premium business class seats. Business class provides fully flat seats that recline 180 degrees, including an integrated

footrest, memory system to save the user’s seat configuration and a lumbar massage system to further increase passenger relaxation. In economy, ergonomic reclining seats provide a headrest with four configurations, providing greater comfort to passengers.

LAN Airlines currently operates seven one-stop flights each week from Sydney to Santiago, Chile, with onward connections to more than 115 destinations in South America operated by both LAN Airlines and TAM Airlines.

KIWI COOl RUlES Traveltalk’s JENNY ROWLAND gets a taste of Kiwi hospitality on an Air New Zealand flight from Sydney to Houston.

WHY ARE the Kiwis so damn cool? From the new Air New Zealand lounge at Sydney Airport (which comes equipped with Grant, the most charming and knowledgeable bartender who made me a delicious signature Kiwi-tini cocktail and then recommended a great NZ chardy) to the snappy, fun and entertaining safety video on board – the Kiwi-cool was already upon me.

My flight from Sydney to Auckland for my connection to Los Angeles and then on to Houston was great. However, Los Angeles will soon be a stopover of the past as Air New Zealand will be commencing direct flights to Houston before Christmas. What a pleasure it will be to experience

Kiwi hospitality all the way to the USA! Air New Zealand intends to fly between

Auckland and Houston up to five times a week from mid-December, using their refurbished Boeing 777-200 jets on the route, the longest in the airline’s network. The new route offers an alternative and Kiwi-cool way for Australians to fly to America, albeit via a stopover in Auckland.

But it’s not just about the convenience of the route. The difference is the way the crew make you feel. To them, you’re not just another passenger – they treat you like a real person right from the Kia Ora get go.

The business class experience from Auckland to LA is what makes even a seasoned traveller get excited about flying

business class. Great food and fab NZ wine, a comfy flat bed made up for you by the cabin crew and an extensive movie and entertainment collection. Prompt take off and early landing all combined to make this a memorable flight for all the right reasons.

With their new direct flights to Buenos Aires and Houston coming soon, this uber cool carrier will win and keep a whole new legion of fans! And Grant, kiwi-tinis are gonna be in big demand.

# Air New Zealand’s direct flights between Auckland and Buenos Aires will also commence in December, the airline’s first ever scheduled service to South America. airnewzealand.com

AIR NEW Zealand has unveiled its new flagship lounge at Auckland International Airport featuring an ultra-modern design and tailored seating zones.

The lounge covers more than 2,000-square-metres, seats 375 people and overlooks the runway. It also features

a covered terrace and fireplace offering a year-round outdoor area. Additional features include 24 different styles of seating, a new food theatre, a central bar, separate kids’ area, business zone and enhanced connectivity.

There’s also a New Zealand-centric

design featuring large scale digital screens with looping time lapse imagery of local scenery and a ‘digital ceiling’ over the bar area to reflect the changing New Zealand sky. The opening is part of a four-year, $100 million program to redevelop the lounge network.

CRYSTAl YACHT Cruises has unveiled the complete itineraries and fares for 2016 through to the beginning of 2018 for its glamorous new yacht Crystal Esprit.

The first guests will sail on December 23, 2015, on a round-trip from Mahé with stops at neighbouring islands. Guests will also enjoy an inclusive post- and pre-cruise New Year’s Eve extravaganza in Dubai complete with three- or four-nights at the Dubai Taj Hotel and a fireworks display.

Being small means Crystal Esprit can reach remote and coveted locations not easily accessed by her larger cruise ship sisters. A range of seven-day itineraries is currently being offered in the Seychelles, along the Adriatic Coast and from Oman, Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

The 62-guest all-suite yacht boasts high-end finishes, modern technology and features like a two-passenger submarine, four 10-passenger zodiacs for special excursions, water skis, wakeboards, kayaks and jet skis.

The all-inclusive fares for Crystal Esprit begin at $US2,966 (approx. $AU4,200) per person including all taxes.

UNIWORld HAS announced that Elisabeth von Trapp, granddaughter of the legendary Maria and Baron von Trapp whose story inspired The Sound of Music, will return to its ships in 2016.

THE GENEROSITY of passengers has helped MSC Cruises raise €4 million (approx. $AU6 million) on board its ships for UNICEF.

Company executives, UNICEF officials, stakeholders and hundreds of children attended a special ceremony at Expo Milan 2015 recently where a symbolic cheque was handed over to Phillipe Baud, Deputy Director of UNICEF Switzerland, by Daniela Picco, Head of Strategic Partnerships at MSC Cruises (pictured right).

MSC Cruises and UNICEF joined forces in 2009 under the ‘Get on Board for Children’ initiative, which encourages guests on board to make a contribution to the charity.

“MSC Cruises and UNICEF have long-established a strong relationship, having worked hand in hand since 2009 on a program that positively impacts the life of thousands of children around the world,” said Pierfrancesco Vago, MSC Cruises’ Executive Chairman.

“We are thus extremely proud to have reached the €4 million milestone and wish to thank our guests for their continued generosity in support of UNICEF and our joint program.”

The partnership was expanded in 2014 with a new life-saving initiative to provide assistance to malnourished children by delivering Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) to treat severe malnutrition in developing countries and in those affected by crisis situations. So far more than €1.3 million (approx. $2 million) has been put

to use to help children and their families in Ethiopia, South Sudan, Somalia and Nepal.

Apart from fundraising activities on board its ships, MSC organises ‘edutainment’ activities for children and their parents to raise awareness of UNICEF’s work and the needs of children around the world. msccruises.com.au

IN ONlY its second season sailing Europe’s rivers, Evergreen Tours’ sister company, Emerald Waterways, was recognised in a number of tightly fought categories at the 2015 Cruise International Awards.

In the ‘Best New River Ship’ category, Evergreen’s newly christened Star Ship, Emerald Dawn, received a nod thanks to its sleek design and innovative features including the heated pool which turns into a cinema each night.

In the ‘Best River Cruise Line’ category, Emerald Waterways itself was highly commended, despite still being a young company.

“We’re thrilled as these awards reinforce the overwhelmingly positive feedback we’ve received from our guests over the past 18 months,” said Angus Crichton, Evergreen Tours General Manager. “As the newest cruise line it’s an honour to be compared with some of the largest cruise lines on Europe’s rivers and Evergreen are proud to exclusively offer Emerald Waterways’ cruises in the Australian market.”

All Emerald Star Ships boast the same innovative design features, including the 24-square-metre onboard heated swimming pool that transforms into a cinema at night, two restaurants and a special cabin design featuring an indoor glass balcony. A fifth Star Ship, Emerald Belle, will join the fleet in 2016.

IRRAWAddY RIvER, MYANMAR A relatively new destination for river cruising, Myanmar will slowly emerge from the far-reaching shadows of its more developed neighbours in 2016 and with good reason. Now is the time to visit, though, as it is still an untouched destination.

Guests who set sail aboard APT’s new Burma river ship, the RV Samatha, on the Irrawaddy in 2016 will enjoy dinners personally designed by the company’s Asia ambassador, celebrity chef Luke Nguyen. Also exclusive for APT guests is the chance to sample Luke’s specially designed degustation menu in the ship’s private dining room, an intimate eight-seat venue.

lOWER GANGES, INdIAVisit Mother Theresa’s house, learn about the local Hare Krishna community and culture or enjoy a tour of the Hazarduari Palace in Murshidabad. There is also the chance to go shopping at shore-side bazaars.

Sailing aboard the new RV Ganges Voyager on a round trip from Kolkata to

Murshidabad, guests can enjoy suites with private ensuites, flat-screen TVs, on-demand movies and balconies. The ship, which accommodates just 56 people, also features a sun deck, dining room, air-conditioned lounge, spa and gym.

CHObE RIvER, bOTSWANAA river cruise safari offers the chance to see hippos, elephants, buffalo, lions and leopards congregating along the river banks. With just 14 suites, the Zambezi Queen features internet access, a plunge pool, sun deck and shaded area, as well as an open restaurant and lounge area with panoramic windows for viewing the animals.

GARONNE ANd dORdOGNE RIvERS, bORdEAUXIn 2016 APT will introduce Bordeaux river cruising, with a choice of five itineraries available covering the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. Sailing aboard APT’s boutique 74-suite luxury river ship, the MS AmaDolce, guests can visit Bordeaux, Cadillac, Pauillac, Blaye, Libourne and Saint-Émilion.

River cruising in France is all about the food, wine, history and unforgettable scenery. For example, guests can enjoy a private dinner at the Château Pape Clément in Bordeaux matched with paired wines, or visit to a family-owned cooperage before a wine tasting in Ludon-Médoc.

AMAZON RIvER, PERUAround one third of the world’s recorded plant and animal species can be found here, including many varieties of monkeys, more than 3,000 species of fish, an array of native birds and the almost unearthly giant Amazon water lily pads.

Guests can swim with pink river dolphins, hike through lush rainforest, enjoy a night safari, fish for piranhas, canoe tranquil waterways, cruise on a skiff over otherwise inaccessible tributaries and visit a riverside community to gain an insight into their way of life.

Travel with APT and you’ll enjoy an exclusive four-night cruise aboard the Delfin II, a boutique river ship for just 28 guests.

PRICES: APT’s ‘African Journey’ costs

River cruising grew by more than 60 per cent last year with nearly 80,000 Australians enjoying this form of travel. Here, Debra Fox, Chief Marketing Officer for APT, shares her pick of some of the best new river cruises for 2016.

dEbUT bROCHURE OFFERS MORE CHANCES TO ENJOY THE SCENIC SURROUNdINGSA new tour, new extensions and early bird savings are all part of the first Southeast Asia River Cruising brochure from Scenic.

Featuring the company’s full collection of Mekong and Irrawaddy river cruises, the brochure also includes a number of new Enrich experiences and Freechoice activities, three new extensions in Vietnam plus a new tour for 2017.

The 2016/2017 program signals the inaugural season for Scenic Spirit which launches on the Mekong in January, travelling over eight days between Ho Chi

Minh City and Siem Reap. Meanwhile Scenic Aura will launch in September next year on the Irrawaddy and will spend 11 days journeying between Mandalay and Pyay.

Both ships provide a boutique environment with all balcony suites – 34 suites on Scenic Spirit and 22 suites on Scenic Aura – all featuring a separate bedroom, living room and balcony. The ships have a choice of dining venues from a la carte to casual dining, a resort-style pool deck and bar area, spacious bar and lounge, sun deck with open air cinema, complimentary beverages, a butler service for all travellers and a guest laundry.

As with all Scenic river cruises, guests enjoy included tips and gratuities, expert local guides, all Scenic Freechoice activities, Scenic Enrich special events and Scenic Sundowners cocktail receptions.

“Our expansion into Southeast Asia has been a huge success since we launched our Mekong river cruises last November,” said Adam Burke, Journey Designer Asia. “Both rivers offer a wealth of fascinating opportunities and with Myanmar only recently opening up to tourists there really is no better time to visit the Asia of old.”

New Freechoice activities include a Red Bridge cooking class in Hoi An, a cycle journey around Hanoi’s West Lake, an art tour of Saigon and a tour of Dong Ha Hiep Island by sampan.

In 2017, guests can also enjoy new Enrich events in Siem Reap including a themed gala dinner and Apsara dance performance, and a tethered balloon ride over Angkor Wat at sunrise.

Three new extensions allow guests to explore even more of Vietnam – Mai Chau Eco Lodge (Mai Chai and Hanoi), Veteran’s Legacy (HCMC, Vung Tau and Nui Dat) and Beach Retreats (Danang, Nha Trang and Long Hai). There is also a new tour cruise and tour for 2017 – the 22-day Indochina Explorer and Luxury Mekong travels from the north of Vietnam, along the Mekong through Laos and Cambodia, concluding in Ho Chi Minh City, the capital of Vietnam.

Scenic has early bird offers on bookings made by January 31, 2016 whereby if guests book any journey to Indochina of 13 days or longer, or of 14 days or longer to Myanmar, they’ll fly free to Southeast Asia, including taxes. That represents a saving of up to $3,070 per couple. scenic.com.au

WHAT’S HOT 2016: INdIA

38 | w w w . T r a v e l T a l k m a g . c o m . a u

INdIA IS vast. Vast in space, population and culture. Indeed, it is a country where cultures meet, from ethnic groups who pride themselves on their ancient traditions and still live as their ancestors did, to the urban middle classes who speak mainly ‘Hinglish’ (English with a smattering of Hindi thrown in) and dress in western-style jeans, leather boots and shawls while talking on their mobile phones.

But the India that I know and am familiar with is one of village life, surrounded by wheat and rice fields with locals constantly busy tending to their crops and their cows and/or buffalos. So stepping out of that life and onto a fast train bound for the Jaipur Literature Festival was a rude awakening. This modern event was a world away from village life, attended by well dressed women in designer clothes and short haircuts speaking in English on their Smartphones.

India has a significant middle class population – 160 million individuals and expected to grow to around 267 million within five years. According to The Economic Times, the growth in the number of middle class households will

translate into huge demand for products such as cars, televisions, computers, air-conditioners, microwave ovens, credit cards… and books.

Stepping out of Jaipur Station among these chic, urbane women was like walking down Oxford Street in London, with chauffeur driven cars waiting for them. The woman I had been sitting next to offered me a ride in her car as I had lent her IR200 (about $4) to pay the porter to carry her bags at Delhi. She was late and had no change, so I got to ride in one of the fancy cars waiting at the station as we zoomed towards ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’ (as widely quoted by the writer, Tina Brown).

The Jaipur Literature Festival has been a go-to event since 2005. It is held in January every year at the famous Diggi Palace, a family-owned haveli (a royal heritage palace) that doubles now as a hotel. It is frequented by both local and international writers.

There are one-hour sessions under canopies dotted around the complex and you simply choose the one that interests you. Some of the sessions have a single author with a moderator and others

are panel discussions on a previously advertised topic. The range of these topics is as vast as India – from its political scene to historical accounts of its coloured past to more personal accounts of writing memoirs.

Some of the titles are unusual. One in particular was called ‘Selfie: The Art of Memoir.’ Lots of young people were there hoping to get advice on the perfect shot, only to find out that it was about memoir writing.

As for me, I loved the ‘Greatest Show on Earth’ and all it had to offer. Roll on January 2016. Picture courtesy Sharon Thrupp.

WHAT’S HOT 2016: ASIA

42 | w w w . T r a v e l T a l k m a g . c o m . a u

IT SEEMS Aussies visiting Asia are becoming increasingly intrepid. While Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand are as popular as ever, it’s destinations that lie off the well-trodden tourist tracks that are gaining in popularity.

INdOCHINAIndochina, and more specifically destinations that include cruising itineraries and that are less familiar to tourists, is emerging as most popular for 2016 at Wendy Wu Tours.

“Cruising the Pacific and Europe has been done by many Australians. The typical cruiser is now looking for something different and a little closer to home,” said Amanda Bruno, Marketing Manager for Wendy Wu Tours.

“With so many impressive sights and natural wonders on offer in Indochina, there are some great new products emerging for 2016 that combine land and cruise to appease all types of travellers. Many return customers are seeking smaller, lesser-known towns to discover such as Ya’an in China and Hue in Vietnam.”

These destinations are increasingly appealing to cruise customers with better ships and facilities now available along many of Indochina’s waterways.

“Cruising through Indochina allows passengers to experience a side of these destinations, stopping in smaller villages and venturing further into these

fascinating countries,” said Amanda.Introduced for the 2016 season is the 20-

day ‘Mekong Odyssey’ tour that combines land touring along the coast of Vietnam, an overnight ‘junk’ stay in Halong Bay, a seven-night cruise on the RV Mekong Pandaw from My Tho in the Mekong Delta to Siem Reap in Cambodia, the gateway to Angkor, and three days land touring in Cambodia.

Priced from $8,480 per person twin share, it is fully inclusive of all land and cruise accommodation, meals, comprehensive touring with guides and entrance fees, visa fees for Australian passport holders, tipping and fuel surcharge, which is subject to change.

CHINAIt’s a vast destination overflowing with history, intrigue and paths rarely travelled by westerners and that’s what is making China so attractive to Australians as we head into 2016.

Travel Directors make a point of exploring lesser-known regions of the world and have recently released a new 26-day day tour from southern China along the Old Burma Road as part of their ‘The Road to Mandalay’ itinerary.

Beginning in Kunming, China’s city of eternal spring, the journey moves to the Shangri-La towns of Lijiang and Dali in the Tibetan foothills before joining the Burma Road through China’s rarely seen volcanic

landscape around ancient villages in the Tengchong area.

Crossing into Myanmar at the historic border town of Ruili, the tour continues by train through Shan villages to the old British Hill Station of Maymyo, introducing travellers to a place unspoiled by mass tourism.

The tour ends with a cruise down Myanmar’s lifeblood, the Irrawaddy River, and a hot air balloon ride over the ancient temples of Bagan before taking the road south to the capital Yangon.

Departing on February 22 and October 31, 2016, the entire itinerary including all flights, accommodation, transport, transfers, meals, tips, gratuities and experienced guides costs $13,990 per person twin share with reasonable single supplements available for solo travellers.

MYANMARCambodia and Vietnam continue to drive demand in Asia at InterAsia Tours but they’ve noticed an emerging trend for travel to Myanmar.

Dan has also noticed an increase in independent rather than group travel to a destination well suited to all travellers.

“Predominantly our clients are discerning and choose us often over cheaper online products because they prefer to deal with

“We see more and more requests for independent travel these days rather than groups – when groups are requested, they want small groups not coach loads.”

The 16-day ‘Myanmar Explorer’ tour is priced from $3,822 per person twin share and departs on October 1, 2016. The tour is a cost-effective choice for visitors wanting an in-depth exploration of the country.

WHAT’S HOT 2016: SOUTH AMERICA

EYES IN THE SKYThere are many interesting buildings in Santiago. The Presidential Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Central Market are all well worth a visit while San Cristóbal Hill offers panoramic views of the city and surrounds. But the best seat in town is at the top of the tallest skyscraper in Latin America.

Only recently opened as a public viewing facility, Sky Costanera is an observation deck at the top of the Santiago Tower, which rises 300 metres above the streets and affords 360-degree vistas of the sprawling city.

The views are incredible, particularly at sunset, and give a real sense of the size and density of Santiago while also helping you get a geographical feel for the layout of the city.

And when you’re done gazing at the views, pop downstairs to the largest shopping mall in South America. It features six floors of retail outlets, including designer labels, department stores and restaurants. A great place to spend a few hours and a few pesos. skycostanera.cl

THE CRUElTY OF MANKINdThe Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos (Museum of Memory and Human Rights) is a sobering place, containing an exhibition unlike any I have seen before. It doesn’t deal with ancient relics, long-lost civilisations or scientific achievement. It is a moving and graphic illustration of man’s inhumanity to man.

It was on September 11, 1973 when a military coup swept Augusto Pinochet to power. The presidential palace in the centre of Santiago was bombed, causing then President Salvadore Allende to commit suicide rather than submit to the rebellion.

The exhibition charts the course of the coup, from its early rumblings, to the events of September 11 through to the brutal aftermath. During Pinochet’s regime, more than 3,000 people were arrested, imprisoned, tortured and killed, the youngest of whom (Carlos Fariña) was just 13 years old.

The memorabilia, TV news reel footage and archive pictures tell the story but there are two particular sections that will stay with me forever. One is the metal bed

where detainees were subjected to electric shock torture. The other is the specially-designed viewing area where the faces of all those who went ‘missing’ stare back at you from the opposite wall. A human tragedy given some very real human faces.

GIddY UPAll I needed was a poncho and a chupalla and I could have been Clint Eastwood in A Fistful of Dollars. We were taking a 10-kilometre horseback ride 300 metres up into the La Dehesa hills about half an hour from Santiago with our impossibly rugged host from Andes Riders, Cristián Waidele, who carries a knife that would put Crocodile Dundee to shame.

We were trying to be huaso’s (the Chilean version of the gaucho) but truth be told our mounts were so docile we could have nodded off and still stayed aboard. But occasionally my horse would break into a sudden trot and I’d have to hang on to the reins with one hand and my camera with the other. For up here, with the snow-capped Andes in the distance and Santiago laid out below,

‘Wine Capital of the World’ by Great Wine Capitals.

First planted in the mid-1980’s, the region was the first to try cool climate wines and now turns out crisp, fresh varieties. The man largely responsible for this pioneering work was Pablo Morande, a ninth-generation winemaker who started with 20 hectares and took eight years to see success.

Bodegas RE is his vineyard and visitors can enjoy some of the many varieties of wine (think Pinotel, Syranoir and Chardonnoir) and other products they make, including balsamic vinegar and heady fruit liquors. You can even have lunch in the barrel room (although bring a jumper because it’s pretty chilly in there).

THE HIllS ARE AlIvEAnd if you’ve made it as far as Casablanca, you might as well make a day of it and keep going for half an hour to Valparaiso. A city

on the west coast, Valparaiso was a thriving port until the Panama Canal opened and virtually destroyed its seafaring trade overnight.

The centre of the city is authentic, if a little worn around the edges, but it’s the hills above Valparaiso that make it worth a visit. Here, you’ll find houses, restaurants and bars colourfully decorated in street art. The place has a delightfully grungy/artistic feel about it and a great place to unleash your inner bohemian.

The other thing Valparaiso is famous for is its antique funiculars, which transport visitors up and down the aforementioned hills above the city. Some of these were built in the late nineteenth century and the only way I can describe the experience is if you imagine riding down a steep slope in a garden shed. Exhilarating and terrifying in equal measure.

EMERGE FROM THE ICEEtched into the western side of Chile and nestled below some of Patagonia’s largest ice fields are the inlets that make up the country’s fjord lands.

Carved from the surrounding glaciers, the fjords display an earth which seems to be emerging from an ice age, as these glaciers continue to plunge and calve, eating away at the granite below.

Exposed rocks become homes for micro life which slowly biodegrade to make new soil for flora to flourish and feed wandering fauna. In due course this also biodegrades to make homes for more life and so the area continues to evolve before our eyes. Yet this evolution is all so relatively fresh that travellers may feel as if they are witnessing the beginning of time – a true unveiling.

Human population is rare in these fjords and the weather is simply something the traveller prepares for and embraces. Here, ecosystems can be witnessed up close and personal and all is 100 per cent organic.

WHAT’S HOT 2016: WAKATObI

WHEN YOUR clients ask for the ultimate island escape, look to Wakatobi Dive Resort, even if they don’t plan to spend their entire vacation underwater.

Scuba divers the world over put Wakatobi at the head of their list of dream destinations, but so do a growing number of other travellers looking for an authentic vacation experience that blends nature, luxury and adventure.

Tucked away on a remote tropical island and surrounded by some of the most pristine and biologically rich coral reefs in the world, this intimate beachside resort exudes a barefoot-casual style that is complemented by premier, concierge-level service and five-star dining.

Direct charter flights from Bali to a private airstrip cut travel time to less than three hours and allow for easy international connections. To further enhance the travel experience, Wakatobi’s concierge staff is on hand in Bali to coordinate all details of transfers and layover excursions and stays.

Divers and snorkelers come to immerse in spectacular underwater landscapes.

Coral gardens begin right off the beach at Wakatobi’s famous House Reef, which has been named the world’s best shore dive.

A fleet of custom dive launches provide access to more than 40 additional sites located within Wakatobi’s private marine reserve. But one doesn’t need to be an avid diver to enjoy this magnificent underwater realm, as many of these same sites offer acres of shallow and sheltered reefs ideal for snorkelers of all ages and abilities.

An additional range of beach activities and waters sports includes kayaking, stand up paddleboarding and the new kiteboarding program.

With steady trade winds blowing from May through September, the shallows inside the reef are ideal for learning to kiteboard, while the offshore waters provide challenging thrills for experts. Wakatobi is becoming known as a kitboarding destination and in recognition of this growing popularity the resort now includes kiteboarding activities as a standard part of the activities package.

A collection of spacious beachside bungalows and waterfront villas ensure

ample privacy and can accommodate families as well as couples. Nanny service and children’s programs are available; guests can also select private guides and even private boats. Land activities include an on-site spa, nature walks and island tours.

An added element of the Wakatobi vacation experience that consistently draws five-star ratings from guests is the cuisine. At the resort’s beachside restaurant, internationally-trained chefs create a savoury array of Indonesian and continental favourites. In-room dining, picnics and private beachside table settings are also available.

Several FX rollback opportunities in the year ahead will add even more value for your clients. Contact Juliette Myers for commission details, inquiries and assistance with your bookings:

soutH AfrICAIT SEEMS X will definitely mark the spot when the 10th incarnation of Tankwa Town takes place next year marking a decade of evolution for the AfrikaBurn event.

Taking place from April 25 to May 1, AfrikaBurn (afrikaburn.com) is a community of people who come together to create art, burning structures, costume, performance, theme camps, music and mutant vehicles. It takes place in the Tankwa Karoo, an arid semi-desert area located in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, and aims to be radically inclusive and accessible to anyone. The theme of next year’s event is ‘X’ and general tickets go on sale this month.

Slightly less off-the-wall but still quite radical is the Up the Creek festival (upthecreek.co.za) that has been running

for every year for more than 25 years. Held on a farm just outside Swellendam, it combines concerts from local bands with the chance to get out on a lilo and float on the Breede River. Organisers say it’s a bit like Woodstock but with water thrown in for good measure.

Definitely one for the young, hip crowd, Up the Creek 2016 takes place from January 28 to 31. Children under 18 are not allowed and a full weekend ticket costs R900 (approx. $AU90). Tickets include access to camping space (no reservations allowed, space works on a first-come-first-served basis) and campers have access to shared ablutions, two sets of hot showers and toilets. There’s a motel option for those who don’t want to camp.

Things are likely to be a little more sedate at the annual Pick n Pay Knysna

Oyster Festival (oysterfestival.co.za). This is South Africa’s premium lifestyle and sport festival which attracts sport lovers, families and those in search of a great party. The 33rd incarnation of the event takes place in the Western Cape Province town in July.

A different kind of sea creature is the focus of the annual Sardine Run, held between May and July (sardinerun.com). Millions of sardines travel north from the southern oceans off South Africa’s Cape Point, hugging the shore as they make their way up along the coastlines of the former Transkei (northern Eastern Cape) and KwaZulu-Natal. Their shoals can be 15 kilometres in length, three and a half kilometres wide and nearly 40 metres deep.

The Sardine Run is a spectacle in itself but added to this are the hundreds of predators that come to feed, rivalling the

Back on dry land, the Kaapse Klopse is a New Year’s carnival that usually takes place in the streets of Cape Town on January 2nd, a date known as Tweede Nuwejaar (second New Year). Rooted in slave culture, the tradition is a modern day take on the celebrations held when the slaves in the Cape were given a holiday at the start of a new year.

Costume preparation – usually boldly coloured satin fabric, bow ties, umbrellas and hats – begins in August, although some troupes start their rehearsals and preparations as early as July. Up to 10,000 banjo-strumming minstrels take to the streets of District Six, winding through the central business district of Cape Town on their way to Green Point Stadium.

Elsewhere in South Africa, bird watchers should pencil in mid-October to November when the country is on the flight path of birds from the north. If it’s the spread of the Cape flower season that you wish to catch, visit the area when the winter rains are over at the first sign of spring, namely August and September. And if you are going on a game safari, the best time is July through September, when the visibility is best and it’s birthing season.

NAMIbIA TIPPEd FOR THE TOP Namibia is a one-of-a-kind country offering some truly unique landscapes as well as various experiences that you just can’t find anywhere else in the world.

It also has an exclusive edge over most other destinations. It is the second least populated country in the world meaning that you can experience this pristine and unforgettable land in relative privacy.

The majority of Namibia is malaria-free which, along with the numerous activity options, makes it an ideal destination for families. Honeymooners can delight in the romantic experiences available, including sleeping under the stars, picnicking in the dunes or taking a hot air balloon ride over the flame-coloured landscapes. There really is something for everyone in Namibia and a country unlike any other in Africa.

For first-timers to the continent, Namibia offers excellent game viewing and although there is a great sense of adventure, the country is safe and welcoming. For those looking for even more adventure there are activities including the chance to track desert-adapted elephants on foot, kayak with seals or join a tandem skydive.

RECENT RESEARCH shows that cycling in Australia has risen dramatically in the last few years with almost one in five people now riding a bike regularly or occasionally.

For some it’s an enjoyable pastime while for others it’s a way of life, even influencing their holiday activities, attitudes and preferences.

Tourism New Zealand has been quick to tap into this developing trend, offering 23 routes around the country for both beginners and hardened cyclists to enjoy. A new ambassador will be announced shortly to support the tourism board’s cycling campaigns in 2016. In the meantime, here are a couple of routes to consider.

HAWKE’S bAYHawke’s Bay Trails stretches between the twin cities of Napier and Hastings on the North Island and is made up of three great rides: water, landscapes and wineries. Graded ‘easy’, the flat terrain of the region combines with the mild weather of the east coast to make the cycling great all year round.

Each track offers a unique Hawke’s Bay experience showcasing popular attractions alongside diverse scenery, coupled with great food and wine opportunities. In particular, the ‘wineries’ ride is the latest addition to the network and takes visitors around some of the region’s best known wineries, linked by a flat, off-road trail for safe and scenic cycling.

OTAGO CENTRAl RAIl TRAIlCovering 150 kilometres of the South Island, the Otago Central Rail Trail is New Zealand’s original great ride and is open all year round. The track is all off-road with no traffic, so cyclists can just enjoy Central Otago’s big skies and distinctive landscape, ranging from mountainous and rugged rock to river gorges, viaducts and high country sheep stations.

With old stream train tunnels to cycle

through and 20 towns along the route, it’s also one of the most popular trails in the country. You can even buy a ‘Rail Trail Passport’ to mark the occasion and prove you rode it.

Both trails are part of Nga Haerenga (The New Zealand Cycle Trail) which is a government initiative to build and operate a network of cycle routes through the country.

The sections through Hamilton City and between Cambridge and the start of the rowing course at Lake Karapiro are completed and can be experienced now. te-awa.org.nz

Taranaki: A new experience with Forgotten World Adventures will see visitors enjoy a rail biking experience through some of the North Island’s most isolated and unspoilt landscape. Pedal a rail bike along a section of the 140 kilometre-long decommissioned Stratford/Okahukura railway. forgottenworldadventures.co.nz

Wellington: The Trench Experience at The Great War Exhibition will offer a glimpse of life on the battlefield in the First World War. Due to open early in 2016, this part of the exhibition will allow visitors the chance to fully immerse themselves in the sights, sounds and smells of trench warfare. greatwarexhibition.nz

Southland: More than 300 trucks and 150 petrol bowsers, a significant Henry Ford collection and a vast array of motoring memorabilia are due to be unveiled at Bill Richardson Transport World later this year. It is hoped this new attraction will help bring 60,000 people a year to the region within the next decade. The venue will have purpose-built conferencing and event facilities, a café, shop and Lego learning space. hwr.co.nz newzealand.com/au

INTREPId TRAvEl has added a new trip to their North America range that rewards hardy travellers with the rare opportunity to experience the Northern Lights.

Officially known as the ‘aurora borealis,’ the Northern Lights occur when highly charged particles from the sun interact with elements in the Earth’s atmosphere. This results in a natural light show of greens, violets and blues that takes place above the magnetic pole of the northern hemisphere. Alaska is one of the best places to view them.

‘Alaskan Northern Lights’ is an eight-day itinerary going from Anchorage to Fairbanks. The trip will showcase the magic of a remote Alaskan winter as it travels through natural wilderness and rugged

terrain revealing ample wildlife viewing opportunities, including moose, wolves, bears, caribou and reindeer.

Apart from the light show travellers will also get the opportunity to embark on a guided snowshoe hike through the forests of Denali National Park and take an optional flight over Mount McKinley, the highest mountain in North America.

Guests can also visit the historic gold-mining town of Talkeetna, walk through frozen boreal woods with reindeer in Fairbanks and soak in the outdoor hot mineral waters at Chena Hot Springs. The trip costs from $3,920 per person and departs on March 5 and 19, 2016.

AIR CANAdA will offer its new premium economy and international business class products on its daily B777-200 non-stop flights between Sydney and Vancouver next year.

From May 17, North America’s leading airline will offer 40 seats in international business, 24 seats in premium economy class and 236 seats in economy class.

Business passengers will enjoy Air Canada’s next generation lie-flat ‘Executive Pods’, which feature an adjustable pneumatic cushion headrest, an 18-inch personal entertainment screen and noise-cancelling headsets. The seats are also arranged in 1-2-1 configuration, guaranteeing direct aisle access with window views.

Premium economy offers passengers greater legroom and recline, along with wider seats equipped with a 9- or 11-inch enhanced definition, intuitive-touch personal entertainment screen. In addition, there are premium meals, complimentary bar service and priority check-in and baggage delivery at the airport.

The new-look B777-200 aircraft will also offer a re-designed economy cabin, offering an upgraded in-flight entertainment system available free at every seat.

“This development comes just one month after we announced plans to launch non-stop Brisbane-Vancouver services in June 2016 using our new B787-9 Dreamliner aircraft,” said Paul McLean, Air Canada General Manager Australia and New Zealand.

THE Old Dart has a great story to tell in 2016… and some of the most famous writers in history will be part of it.

Next year sees a plethora of literary anniversaries, involving William Shakespeare, Charlotte Bronte, Beatrix Potter and Roald Dahl. Each will be marked with a series of special events, exhibitions and feature films, designed to attract and appeal to international visitors.

Stratford-upon-Avon is the place to be as Shakespeare’s England (shakespeares-england.co.uk) hosts a range of new exhibitions to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the playwright’s death. These include a new immersive theatrical experience at the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), a reimagining of New Place (one of five properties in the town that are looked after by Shakespeare’s Birthplace Trust and also Shakespeare’s final home) following a major restoration project, and Shakespeare’s school room, open for the first time at King Edward VI School.

In addition, a new exhibition will open at the RSC highlighting the work of the directors, writers, actors and designers who have shaped the theatrical company

throughout its 130-year history.Born in London in 1866, Helen Beatrix

Potter was best known for her imaginative children’s books such as The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of her birth will be held at The World of Beatrix Potter (hop-skip-jump.com) in Cumbria, which showcases Peter Rabbit’s garden, Jemima Puddle-duck’s woodland glade and Mr Tod’s underground home. You can also visit Hill Top, the 17th century farmhouse that is a time capsule of her life.

Movies will play a big part in celebrating the legacy of Charlotte Bronte and Roald Dahl next year. The Brontës traces the story of the sisters with details of an A-list cast and crew to be unveiled on April 21 2016, the 200th anniversary of Charlotte Brontë’s birth. The BFG is also coming to the silver screen in 2016 and fans can learn more about the author at the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre in Buckinghamshire as it celebrates the 100th anniversary of his birth.

Another important landmark will be celebrated in the UK next year with a large number of events planned to mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of Capability

Brown (capabilitybrown.org). The world-renowned landscape designer built more than 170 gardens in Britain, mostly for the aristocrats of the 18th century.

One of Brown’s most famous projects was at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. Still owned by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, this estate in the heart of the Peak District National Park receives more than half a million visitors a year, many of them travelling especially for the gardens. Another famous Capability project is Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire and a few gardens are now part of a luxury hotel, including Bowood in Wiltshire and Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire.

SCOTlANdScotland’s achievements in innovation, architecture and design will be celebrated in 2016 with a 12-month program of events.

It’s a great opportunity to visit cities such as Dundee, which has become the first UNESCO City of Design in the UK. The award recognises the huge contribution the city has made to design worldwide, including leading biomedical research, comics, orange marmalade and video

GOURMANdS WIll have even more reason to flock to the Emerald Isle next year with several major celebrations planned.

The NI Year of Food & Drink 2016 will promote the destination through its cuisine as well as being a celebration of the success of the local industry. Food and drink tells the story of Northern Ireland’s culture, heritage, people and landscape.

Food experiences have become more important in tourism than ever before and offer a destination the opportunity to differentiate and celebrate indigenous foods. A themed calendar is being produced that will offer visitors the chance to ‘taste’ the country.

Current highlights include a Belfast Food Tour (belfastfoodtour.com), the Mourne Food Cycle Tour (enniskeenhotel.co.uk) and the Walled City Brewery (walledcitybrewery.com). In addition, several restaurants in Northern Ireland have received Michelin stars and major awards, while Derry has been shortlisted in the ‘Foodie Towns of Ireland’ (foodietowns.ie).

The coastal town of Kinsale boasts the greatest concentration of restaurants in the country and has long been known as the ‘Gourmet Capital of Ireland’. The 40th Kinsale Gourmet Festival

(kinsalerestaurants.com) runs from October 7 to 9, 2016, and includes the Cork Chowder Cook Off, where top restaurateurs from the local city and the county come together to see who will be crowned ‘Cork Chowder Champion.’ Other events include A Taste of West Cork 5 Course Dining Experience, the Mad Hatters Taste of Kinsale and A Fruits de Mer Luncheon.

Ireland has long been famous for the quality of its whiskey and Teeling (teelingwhiskey.com) is the first new distillery in Dublin in 125 years. Located in The Liberties, this independently-owned distillery has the capacity to produce more than 500,000 litres of whiskey annually and is dedicated to bringing choice and breadth back into the category.

The visitor centre is the only fully operational and working distillery open to the public and is expected to become one of the city’s top tourist attractions. It provides an experiential journey into the history of Teeling and the unique Dublin whiskey distilling process and tasting.

Once that has whetted your appetite, head over to the first Irish whiskey museum in the world. Located in the heart of Dublin and in an historic setting, the Irish Whiskey Museum (irishwhiskeymuseum.ie) takes visitors on

a journey through time, unveiling the intriguing tale of Irish whiskey. And no trip to Dublin would be complete without a visit to the Guinness Storehouse (guinness-storehouse.com), recently crowned Europe’s best tourist attraction in the prestigious World Travel Awards.

HIP & TRENdYThe Dean Hotel is a new boutique property in Dublin’s city centre. Opened just under a year ago, this hotel is quite hipsterish. Each room has contemporary Irish art, marshal amps for your gadgets and turn tables with vinyl supplied. Or head up to Sophie’s Restaurant for great food and views of the city. deandublin.ie

1916 COMMEMORATIONSThe Irish Government has identified 2016 as a year of national commemoration in the context of the decade of centenaries running from 1912-1922. To mark the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising in the GPO building in Dublin, a wide-ranging events program is being put in place, designed to remember the past, reflect on the country’s achievements and re-imagine the Ireland of the future. ireland.ie
