Owatonna takes a pair from Mayo in Big Nine play

Mayo dropped its second double-header of the week in baseball as Owatonna posted 7-2 and 16-15 victo-ries on Thursday in Big Nine Confer-ence action.

Parker Westphal was 4-for-4 with three RBIs in the opener for Owaton-na as the Huskies collected 12 hits and Mayo had three errors.

Mayo scored its only two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the rally came up short.

“We cannot expect to win if we are unable to make routine defensive plays,” Mayo coach Tom Senne said. “We hurt our pitchers by not helping them out.”

Mayo struggled in the field again in the second game. Both teams had 14 hits, but the host Spartans made six errors. Owatonna was up 13-3 in the bottom of the third before Mayo rallied.

Brady Schuster hit a double, home run and drove in four runs for Owa-tonna in the nightcap.

Sam Warren was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, homer, three RBIs and four runs scored for Mayo. Evan Kaese also drove in three runs and he scored three as well. Mayo scored three runs in the bottom of the sev-enth, but fell a run short.

“We shot ourselves in the foot every chance we had,” Senne said. “We wait until it is too late to play OK baseball and we haven’t realized that

that does not result in wins.“This season will be a chance for

each player show what type of base-ball player he wants to become,” the coach added.
