The 2009 Utes are faced with the daunting task of replacing the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Year at quarterback, three starting receivers, the starting running back, two starting offensive linemen, the offensive coordinator and the offensive line coach. Now for the good news. There is strong competition at quarterback, receiver is loaded with talent and game experience, the “second-string” running back led the 2008 Utes in rushing and he is back, three of the best offensive linemen in the conference return, the new offensive coordinator has played a key role in the game plan for the past four years and the new offensive line coach is a 12-year veteran of college coaching.

Dave Schramm takes the controls of the Ute offense after spending his first four years coaching the running backs. In addition to his coordinator duties, Schramm will coach the quarterbacks. Sliding over from the defensive side of the ball to take Schramm’s place with the running backs is third-year Ute assistant Aaron Alford. Alford managed the cornerbacks his first two years. New to the staff, but experienced in the field, is offensive line coach Blake Miller. Miller was recruited from Rice, which won a school-record 10 games last year and finished tenth in the nation in total offense.

Quarterback The battle to replace one of the nation’s best quarterbacks began the minute the Utes beat Alabama in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Junior Corbin

Louks, the understudy to all-time Utah win leader Brian Johnson for the past two years, owns squatter’s rights – at least for now. Louks played in 19 games in his first two seasons—primarily in run situations—and his 4.42 40 speed led to some dazzling gains. His charge will be to prove his passing game equals his foot speed. Hoping to unseat Louks as the starter is redshirt freshman DeVonte Christopher, the 2007 Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year. Christopher put up phenomenal numbers in high school (passing for over 3,200 yards and 44 touchdowns as a senior) and is participating in his second spring camp at Utah. The competition got stiffer in January, when junior college All-American Terrance Cain joined the team. Cain led the NJCAA in passing yards (3,138) and touchdowns (29) in 2008, while completing 68-percent of his passes.

Wide Receiver Even with the starting lineup wiped clean, this could rate as the best receiving corps in the league. David Reed, whose acrobatic catches are reminiscent of former Ute great and current NFL starter Steve Smith, is one of the nation’s most exciting receivers. Reed averaged a team-high 17.1 yards per catch and scored six touchdowns in his first year at Utah. Senior Aiona Key arrived too late to break into the rotation at receiver last fall, but he’ll have plenty of time to make the cut this season. At 6’4”, with great leaping ability (he blocked three kicks in three games last year), Key has the tools to dominate a game. Junior Jereme Brooks played in 25 games his first two years on campus (starting in seven) and he offers all sorts of options. A slippery receiver and runner, Brooks has also thrown two passes—completing both—one for a touchdown. John Peel, projected to start in spring camp, is awaiting word on an all-but-certain NCAA extension. Injured for most of his first four years, he played in all 13 games last year. Utah’s talent doesn’t stop with the starters. Senior Elijah Wesson has played since his true freshman year, and like Brooks, is a dual threat. Looking to break into the rotation are physically gifted redshirt freshman Luke Matthews and mid-year JC transfer Shaky Smithson.

Running Back Utah’s run game should recover nicely from graduation losses. Senior Matt Asiata played starter-like minutes in 2008 and led Utah (sixth in the conference) with 707 net rushing yards. He tied for second in the league in rushing touchdowns with 12, many coming out of the “Asiata Formation” off the direct snap. Asiata uses his 5’11”, 230-pound size to his advantage, averaging 4.8 yards per carry last fall. Unlike Asiata, who rolls over opponents, junior Eddie Wide (5’10”, 195) out cuts and out runs them. Wide averaged 6.1 yards per rush in a changeup role. As good a combination as Asiata and Wide make, playing time is certain for redshirt freshman

Junior quarterback Corbin Louks played in 19 games the past two seasons.

OffenseStrengths: Running Back, Receiver, Offensive LineQuestion: Quarterback

Senior wide receiver David Reed averaged a team-high 17.1 yards per catch in his first season with the Utes in 2008.

Senior running back Matt Asiata ranked second in the MWC with 12 rushing touchdowns in 2008, including this one against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.

Sausan Shakerin, whose “official” introduction to NCAA ball has been eagerly anticipated. “Shak,” a blend of Asiata and Wide at 6’2”, 215 pounds, was the 2007 Utah Class 5A MVP.

Offensive Line All-America candidate Zane Beadles (6’4”, 305), one of the best left tackles in the nation, heads a trio of returning starters up front. Beadles, first-team all-conference a year ago, opted to stay in school for his final season rather than testing the NFL waters early.

He’ll play alongside two other all-conference candidates – junior guard Caleb Schlauderaff and junior center Zane Taylor. New starters will man the right side, but they have game experience. Junior Neli A’asa, a former defensive tackle-turned tight end-turned offensive guard, will bring great athleticism to his new position. Sophomore Tony Bergstrom, a 6’6”, 300-pound up-and-comer, played in 10 games and started one as a true freshman last year. Bergstrom is listed ahead of another 6’6”, 300-pounder, senior Viliamu Nau, at right tackle. Senior Tyler Williams (three varsity letters) at center and junior Walter Watts (two letters) at guard are the most experienced backups. Youngsters with two-deep aspirations include redshirt freshman Derek Tuimauga and true freshman Sam Brenner.

Tight End Utah’s Most Improved Offensive Player in 2008, Chris Joppru got four of the five starts accorded to the tight end position. When the Utes opt for a double-tight formation, junior Brad Clifford will team up with Joppru.

Plenty is new on the defensive side of the ball, but the most important piece of the puzzle remains in place: Utah’s defensive scheme, which has remained essentially intact for the past 15 years. New defensive coordinator Kalani Sitake, whose first four years on the staff were spent coaching the linebackers (a position he retained in his promotion to DC), has a firm understanding of the defensive philosophy. Sitake’s credits also include his important role – even as a position coach – in Utah’s game planning and play calling. The hiring of veteran NFL and college defensive line coach John Pease lends yet another layer of experience to the Ute defensive coaching staff. Pease will also serve as the assistant head coach. The other change is at corner, where J.D. Williams takes over after seven years in the Pac-10. Seven starters return for the defense, and though the starter losses grew from two to four when all-conference juniors Paul Kruger and Sean Smith declared for the NFL draft early, the defensive outlook is bright. Linebacker Young a year ago, linebacker is perhaps the most seasoned position on the team now. Starters return at every position, led by senior All-America candidate Stevenson Sylvester at rover. Second-team all-league as a junior, Sylvester finished

second on the team in tackles with 73—a figure that included eight TFL and 3.5 sacks. He laid the groundwork for future All-America kudos in the Sugar Bowl, when he ravaged Alabama with three sacks and seven total tackles. Returning to man the middle, where he serves as the field manager for the defense, is senior Mike Wright. He led Utah in tackles (81) in an honorable mention all-conference season last

year. Starting stud linebacker Nai Fotu will miss spring ball while he recuperates from a late-season knee injury. Known for his speed and crushing tackles (he had 5.5 TFL last year), Fotu will be back at work in the fall. Until then, his absence allows versatile senior Kepa Gaison to play even more snaps than usual. Gaison enters spring as the co-starter coming off his magnificent performance in the Sugar Bowl. A former walk-on kicker who can play all three linebacker spots, Gaison had six tackles and two sacks against the Tide. Also in the fray is J.J. Williams, the starting rover for the last half of his freshman season in 2006. He returned from an LDS Church mission in time for spring ball. Three talented sophomores jockeying for future starting jobs are Mo Neal, Matt Martinez and Chaz Walker. Neal and Martinez go into spring as the co-backups at both “mac” and stud, while Walker joins Gaison as the

Left tackle Zane Beadles, a first-team all-MWC pick in 2008, is one of three returning starters on the offensive line.

Senior linebacker Stevenson Sylvester, second-team all-MWC in 2008, was second on the team with 73 stops.

Senior defensive end Koa Misi was second-team all-MWC and ranked third on the team with 8.5 tackles for loss in 2008.

primary backup at rover. If Neal and Martinez can avoid the health problems that hindered them in the past, Utah will experience little, if any drop-off, when the sophomore backups take the field.

Defensive Line Perhaps the most underrated defensive end in the league, look for senior Koa Misi to blast out of Kruger’s shadow this fall. Misi, second-team all-league last year, has started 24 games (playing in all 26) in the past two seasons. His 68 total tackles were tops among the linemen (third overall) in 2008 and his 8.5 tackles for loss ranked third on the team. First in line to replace Kruger at left end is 250-pound sophomore Derrick Shelby, who excelled as an undersized redshirt-freshman tackle a year ago. Shelby became the starting nose tackle by default due to injuries, but quickly earned the job on his own merits. The return of injured tackles Kenape Eliapo and Lei Talamaivao allows Shelby to move to his natural position at end.

Eliapo reclaims his starting post at nose tackle, which immediately puts him in the mix for all-conference accolades. Injured in the season-opener a year ago, Eliapo came back from a broken foot to start in the Sugar Bowl. He displayed his immense strength and athleticism with a monstrous 11-yard sack deep in Utah territory that snuffed a potential touchdown drive by Alabama. Immediately after replacing the injured Eliapo in game two last year, Talamaivao broke his leg and was lost for the season. He’ll return this spring as the starting tackle, armed with three years of eligibility. Talamaivao played as a true

freshman in 2007. Typical of past Utah teams, backups figure to play a key role for a line that pressures the quarterback on nearly every play. Expected to impact the game-day rotation are redshirt freshman Dave Kruger and junior Christian Cox at the ends, and sophomore Sealver Siliga and junior Junior Tui’one at the tackles. At 6’5”, 272 pounds, the younger brother of Paul Kruger could also slide inside. Siliga played as a true freshman last season and is Utah’s biggest lineman at 325 pounds. While Cox and Tui’one lettered last year, their contributions will increase exponentially this fall. Redshirt freshman Nick Binks and senior Tatum Drecksel will also find their way onto the playing field.

Defensive Back On paper, the strength of the defensive backfield is at safety, where all-league candidates Robert Johnson and Joe Dale return. The agile 6’2” Johnson has seven interceptions in his first two seasons as the starting free safety. From his strong safety post, Dale led Utah’s secondary (fourth overall) with 66 total tackles last year and had three interceptions. Redshirt freshman Reggie Topps hopes to spell Johnson at times, while Justin Taplin-Ross, used mostly on special teams in his first two years, backs up Dale. Cornerback is a different story, where first-year assistant J.D. Williams must start virtually from scratch after losing all-conference corners Sean Smith and Brice McCain. R.J. Stanford, Utah’s starting nickel a year ago, takes over at one corner. A great cover man, Stanford is Utah’s fastest

DB with 4.29 speed in the 40. Sophomore Brandon Burton played in 10 games last year and appears the heir apparent at the other corner. At nickel, senior Damilyn Tanner is the leading candidate. Backups hoping to unseat the projected starters include mid-year JC transfer Kamaron Yancy, senior Justin Jones and junior Lamar Chapman.

For the first time in Kyle Whittingham’s head coaching career, he enters a season without the services of sensational kicker/punter Louie Sakoda. Sakoda, a four-year starter, graduated as the most decorated All-American in Utah football history. He was a unanimous Consensus All-America kicker in 2008 and a first-team All-America punter in 2007. The three-time MWC Special Teams Player of the Year was also the first-ever Ray Guy and Lou Groza finalist from Utah (both in 2008). Even sans Sakoda, special teams coordinator Jay Hill is optimistic about the kicking game. One reason is strong-legged senior Ben Vroman, who has handled every kickoff for the past two years. Vroman ranked second in the nation last year in touchbacks with 44, while averaging 68 yards per kickoff. He’ll get first crack at the place-kicking duties, where heavy competition is expected from sophomore Coleman Peterson and incoming sophomore junior college transfer Joe Phillips. Vroman is the clear cut leader to handle kickoffs again. At punter, big (6’3”, 200 pound) redshirt freshman Sean Sellwood has aspirations as the next Sakoda. Vroman backs him up. The entire kick team is new, with redshirt freshman Patrick Greene preparing to snap for both punts and field goals, and redshirt freshman quarterback DeVonte Christopher first in line to hold for the latter. Utah’s punt return situation could actually improve with the turnover. The 2008 Utes struggled mightily with punt returns and tried eight players with mixed results. Redshirt freshman Luke Matthews and JC transfer Shaky Smithson hope to change Utah’s fortunes in this area. Kick returner is the one known entity of the special teams. David Reed won honorable mention all-conference honors here a year ago by averaging 25.4 yards per return. Again, Reed draws comparisons to former Ute Steve Smith (an NFL all-pro at both receiver and returner) with his speed and instincts. His backups are Elijah Wesson and Jereme Brooks – both established kick returners.

Kenape Eliapo (92), who is slated to start at nose tackle, returned late in the 2008 season after suffer-ing a foot injury in the season opener at Michigan.

Special TeamsStrengths: Kick ReturnsQuestions: Kicker, Punter, Punt Returns

Senior safety Robert Johnson (17) has seven interceptions in his first two seasons.

n four years as Utah’s head coach, Kyle Whittingham has won 73-percent of his

games, gone 4-0 in bowl games, led Utah to its best season in 115 years of football, engineered the biggest win in school history and been named the National Coach of the Year.

The best news is that Whittingham will be following his own act. On Dec. 29, 2008, five days before Utah soundly beat Alabama in the Allstate Sugar Bowl, he signed a five-year contract extension with the Utes. For his role in Utah’s 13-0 record and No. 2 national ranking, Whittingham was honored by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and the Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards committee as the 2008 National Coach of the Year. The 2008 Utes—the only FBS team to go the entire season without a loss—received 16 first-place votes and 1,519 total points in the AP poll, trailing only Florida, which won the BCS National Championship game. It was the best ranking in school history, as was Utah’s No. 4 final USA Today finish. Utah capped its remarkable year with a 31-17 Sugar Bowl rout over an Alabama team that had spent five weeks at No. 1. In the first 13-win season in school history, Utah beat four top 25 opponents, among them two that finished in the top 10. An undefeated league record helped Whittingham win Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year honors. His 37-14 career ledger includes a 7-3 advantage over BCS schools and bowl wins against Georgia Tech (2005), Tulsa (2006), Navy (2007) and Alabama (2009/2008 season). Utah’s Sugar Bowl upset marked the second time the school earned a BCS bowl invitation and came away with a convincing victory. Whittingham was transitioning from defensive coordinator to head coach

when the 2004 Utes trounced Pittsburgh 35-7 in the Fiesta Bowl. Utah owns the longest current bowl win streak in the nation at eight games and Whittingham has had a hand in all of them. Prior to assuming the head coaching duties in 2005,

Whittingham was the Ute defensive coordinator for bowl wins over Fresno State (1999), USC (2001) and Southern Miss (2003), and the co-head coach in Utah’s BCS-busting 2005 Fiesta Bowl win over Pittsburgh. He came to Utah as the defensive line coach in 1994 and was promoted to defensive coordinator a year

later. In his 15-year tenure, Utah has logged a 123-55 record and played in nine bowl games (winning eight). Since 1994, Utah has been ranked 50 weeks in the AP poll and boasts three top-10 finishes (No. 10 in 1994, No. 4 in 2004 and No. 2 in 2008). On an individual level, Whittingham has coached four All-Americans, including three consensus first-team selections: defensive lineman Luther Elliss (1994), defensive back Eric Weddle (2006) and place kicker Louie Sakoda (2008). Sakoda, the only unanimous Consensus All-American in Utah football history, is also the only Ute ever to win major first-team All-America honors at two different positions. He was a first-team punter in 2007 (FWAA) and a first-team kicker in 2008 (Consensus). Morgan Scalley was a second-team All-America defensive back in 2004. Whittingham has seen his players win conference Player of the Year honors on defense, special teams and offense. A Ute won MWC Defensive Player of the Year three years running in Scalley (2004) and Weddle (2005-06), while Sakoda was a three-time MWC Special Teams Player of the Year (2006-08). Quarterback Brian Johnson was named the 2008 MWC Offensive Player of the Year. Whittingham has mentored 36 first-team all-conference players as either a defensive coach or head coach at Utah.

In addition, a Ute has won the MVP award in all four bowl games with Whittingham at the helm. In 2005, Weddle was named Defensive MVP and Travis LaTendresse Offensive MVP of the Emerald Bowl; in 2006, Sakoda was the Armed Forces Bowl MVP; in 2007, Brian Johnson was the Offensive MVP and Joe Dale the Defensive MVP of the Poinsettia Bowl; and Johnson repeated a year later, winning MVP honors at the 2009 Sugar Bowl. To date, Whittingham has sent 22 players to the NFL—12 as draft picks and 10 as free agents. Whittingham protégés on active NFL rosters are Martail Burnett, Jonathan Fanene, Quinton Ganther, Ma’ake Kemoeatu, Gabe Long, Sione Pouha, Brett Ratliff, Paul Soliai, Kelly Talavou and Weddle. As a first-year head coach in 2005, Whittingham inherited a team missing many of the biggest stars off the 12-0 2004 team, including five draft picks (among them No. 1 NFL draft pick and Heisman Trophy finalist Alex Smith). Nonetheless Utah went on to beat No. 24 ranked Georgia Tech in the Emerald Bowl. A year later, his 2006 team capped an 8-5 season with a win over Tulsa in the Armed Forces Bowl. In 2007, Utah (9-4) overcame numerous injuries to win eight of its last nine games and beat Navy in the Poinsettia Bowl. Whittingham’s Utah legacy began in 1994, when he coached the defensive line for a team that led the league in every defensive category. In 1995, he became the defensive coordinator, replacing his father Fred, who left for a job in the NFL. Utah led the conference in total defense three times under his direction (2000, 2001 and 2002). In 2002, Utah ranked No. 1 in the MWC in total defense, scoring defense and rushing defense. Utah led the league in scoring defense four times from 1999-2005 (ranking No. 2 in 2003, 2004 and 2005). The Ute defense recorded 14 top-20 statistical rankings from 1995-2004. Whittingham began his coaching career in 1985-86 as a graduate assistant at Brigham Young. He went from there to the College of Eastern Utah as the defensive coordinator in 1987. Next came Idaho State, where he spent six years (1988-93), his last two as the defensive coordinator. A linebacker for Brigham Young from 1978-81, Whittingham earned first-team all-WAC and WAC Defensive Player of the Year honors in 1981. He played in the Hula and Japan Bowls, then launched a professional career that included stints with the Denver Broncos (1982 training camp) and the U.S. Football League (USFL) Denver Gold (1983) and New Orleans Breakers (1984). He played on the Los Angeles Rams’ replacement squad in 1987. Whittingham graduated from BYU in 1984 and received his master’s in 1987. Born Nov. 21, 1959, he was raised in Provo, Utah. He is married to the former Jamie Daniels. They have four children: Tyler, Melissa, Alex and Kylie.

Aaron Alford, in his third year on the staff, was assigned the running backs in February after two years coaching the cornerbacks. Alford has also held assistantships at Akron (2004-06), Wyoming (2002), Western Illinois (2001), Southern Utah (1999-2000) and Kent State (1998). UTAH 25, #24 MICHIGAN 23Ann Arbor, Mich.Michigan Stadium [108,421]

ANN ARBOR—Brian Johnson, Louie Sakoda and a swarming defense led Utah to a 25-23 win over Michigan in the Big House before a capacity crowd of 108,421. Johnson passed for 305 yards and a touchdown while completing 21-of-33 passes. Sakoda put on a dazzling display before an ABC/ESPN 2 audi-ence, making all four field goal attempts, including a career-long 53-yarder in the third quarter that gave the Utes a 25-10 lead. Sakoda also averaged 47 yards on six punts. Paul Kruger (9 tackles, 2.5 TFL, half a sack), Nai Fotu (7 tackles, 2.5 TFL, 1 sack) and Koa Misi (1.5 sacks) led a Ute defense that allowed Michigan just 203 yards (36 rushing). Michigan, held to four rushing yards in the first half, converted on only 3-of-14 third down attempts. Sean Smith had an interception and two pass breakups.

#22/23 UTAH 42, UNLV 21Salt Lake City, UtahRice-Eccles Stadium [45,587]

SALT LAKE CITY—A 21-point third quarter boosted No. 23/22 Utah to a 42-21 victory over UNLV before the third-largest home crowd in Utah history (45,587). UNLV scored on its first possession of the game and led until Brian Johnson’s 56-yard, second-quarter touchdown run. UNLV struck again to take a 14-7 lead, only to see Matt Asiata tie things up with his first career touchdown. The second half was all Utah—and including Asiata’s second-quarter TD run—the Utes scored 35 unanswered points before UNLV would find the end zone again late in the game. Johnson passed for 183 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 80 yards and a score. Stevenson Sylvester had nine tackles (1.5 for loss), and Koa Misi had six tackles, a sack, 1.5 TFL and a forced fumble for a Utah defense that held UNLV to just nine rushing yards in the second half.

#22/22 UTAH 58, UTAH STATE 10Logan, UtahRomney Stadium [19,061]

LOGAN, UTAH—Utah trounced Utah State 58-10 in Logan – setting a record for the most points scored by either team in the rivalry series. The win began inauspiciously for the Utes, when they fumbled away a punt on their own 24-yard line to set up an Aggie score. But the Utes didn’t do much else wrong after that – piling up a season-high 461 yards of total offense to 116 for USU. The Aggies produced just 39 first half yards against Utah’s starting defense. Brian Johnson completed 22-of-31 passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns, Darrell Mack rushed for a season-high 75 yards, Matt Asiata rushed for 56 yards and three touchdowns, and Eddie Wide ran for a career-high 69 yards (all in the fourth quarter). Louie Sakoda made all three of his field goal attempts, including one from 48 yards, and set a personal record with seven PATs. Paul Kruger tied the school record with four sacks and all five of his tackles were for a loss. Utah’s defense didn’t have many chances to pad its stats: The Utes ran 82 plays compared to 48 for Utah State.

COLORADO SPRINGS—Darrell Mack scored the go-ahead touchdown with 0:58 remaining on a 9-yard run, and Joe Dale intercepted an Air Force pass, to clinch a 30-23 Utah win over previously undefeated Air Force. The Falcons en-tered the game as the nation’s second-ranked rushing offense (averaging 358.0 yards), but were held to just 53 ground yards. It was the lowest rushing total for Air Force since 1980. Mike Wright (10 tackles) and Koa Misi (9 tackles, 2.0 TFL) tied career highs to help Utah hold AFA to 191 total yards. Air Force totaled minus-three yards in the first quarter and 11 yards in the third quarter. Running backs Matt Asiata (116 yards) and Mack (101 yards, 3 touchdowns) paced the Ute offense, which came to life in the second half by scoring 21 points. David Reed had a career game with 73 receiving yards and a touchdown on just two catches.

#17/17 UTAH 37, WEBER STATE 21Salt Lake City, UtahRice-Eccles Stadium [45,117]

SALT LAKE CITY—Brian Johnson was 12-of-13 passing for 123 yards and two touchdowns in the decisive second quarter and Utah went on to beat Weber State 37-21. The Utes broke open a 7-7 game with a 17-0 second quarter run—aided by the best defensive period of the night. Weber was stuffed for minus-11 rushing yards and 25 total yards in the second quarter by a Ute defense that also pitched a shutout in the third quarter. After Utah scored 30 straight points to put the game out of reach, Weber scored twice in the fourth quarter against the Utes’ second string defense. Louie Sakoda broke two school records on a night when he made all three field goals and was 4-of-4 in extra points. He moved his career scoring total to 238 points—breaking a 76-year-old school record in the process. Sakoda also made his 45th career field goal for another school record. In his three quarters of play, Johnson completed 18-of-22 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns. Kepa Gaison and Mike Wright had six tackles each to lead the defense, while Greg Newman chipped in five tackles, two TFL (for 17 yards), a sack and a fumble recovery.

#15/15 UTAH 31, OREGON STATE 28Salt Lake City, UtahRice-Eccles Stadium [45,599]

SALT LAKE CITY—Brian Johnson executed the two-minute drill perfectly and Louie Sakoda booted the game-winning field goal as time expired in a 31-28 win over Oregon State. Johnson found his groove with Utah trailing 28-20 and 2:11 remaining in the game. He completed seven of his last eight passes for 91 yards—including a 25-yard touchdown pass to Bradon Godfrey—and then ran for the game-tying two-point conversion. Utah then forced the Beavers to punt, which set up Sakoda’s 37-yard field goal. Brent Casteel had a career-best 105 receiving yards—with instrumental catches of 24 and 16 yards in Utah’s final two scoring drives—and a rushing touchdown. Mike Wright led the defense with a career-high 15 tackles. Wright also had a 9-yard sack in the first quarter that re-sulted in OSU taking a field goal over a touchdown, and a critical fourth-quarter pass breakup in Utah territory that resulted in an OSU punt.

#14/13 UTAH 40, WYOMING 7Laramie, Wyo.War Memorial Stadium [17,123]

LARAMIE, Wyo.—Utah found five different ways to score a touchdown, and along with field goals and PATs, crushed Wyoming 40-7. Sean Smith scored the game’s first touchdown on a 25-yard interception return. The Utes, whose other touchdowns came on a rush, a pass, a blocked punt and a fumble recovery, were up 20-0 before they scored their first offensive touchdown. Louie Sakoda made both of his field goal attempts in frigid gusting winds, including a 50-yarder. Aiona Key blocked a punt and ran it in for a score—his first TD as a Ute and Utah’s first touchdown off a blocked kick since 2004. Matt Asiata rushed for a touchdown and made his first career TD reception. Utah’s final score came after RJ Rice recovered a fumble on a muffed punt in the end zone. Sakoda’s punting pinned Wyoming deep in its own territory and his 81-yard boot in the fourth quarter was the longest by a Ute in 20 years.

#14/13 UTAH 49, COLORADO STATE 16Salt Lake City, UtahRice-Eccles Stadium [44,793]

SALT LAKE CITY—Utah’s offense erupted for 49 points against Colorado State in a 49-16 win in Rice-Eccles Stadium on Oct. 18. The Utes, who scored on their first drive when Brian Johnson found Freddie Brown for a 32-yard touchdown pass, piled up a season-high 549 yards of total offense. Led by backup quar-terback Corbin Louks’ career-high 109 rushing yards, the Utes also produced a season-best rushing game with 327 net yards. Everyone from the offense got into the act, with Johnson throwing for 185 yards and two touchdowns, Louks scoring on touchdown runs of 21 and 69 yards, receivers Brown (78 yards) and David Reed (73 yards) having career days, and running back Matt Asiata scor-ing two touchdowns. Utah’s defense got tough after giving up a touchdown on its first series and held CSU to three points in the second half. Stevenson Sylvester had nine tackles, a forced fumble and a pass breakup and CSU converted on just 3-of-15 third down attempts.

#10/9 UTAH 13, NEW MExICO 10Albuquerque, N.M.University Stadium [40,094]

ALBUQUERQUE—Utah ran its record to 9-0 for just the second time in school history with a 13-10 victory over New Mexico. Brian Johnson became Utah’s all-time winningest quarterback by completing 72-percent of his pass attempts (23-32) for 195 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 41 yards. Louie Sakoda scored seven of Utah’s 13 points, making field goals of 43 and 38 yards and converting his lone PAT of the game. He also dropped four punts inside the 20-yard line, including a huge play with 1:58 remaining when he pinned the Lobos on their own 1-yard line. Koa Misi and Robert Johnson each had eight tackles to spearhead a Ute defense that shut out the Lobos in the first and fourth quarters. Utah held New Mexico to 100 yards below its season rushing average and limited league-leading rusher Rodney Ferguson to 34 yards—his lowest output of the season.

#10/9 UTAH 13, #11/11 TCU 10Salt Lake City, UtahRice-Eccles Stadium [45,666]

SALT LAKE CITY—Brian Johnson capped a last-minute, 80-yard drive by throwing a touchdown strike to Freddie Brown and Utah came from behind to beat No. 11 TCU 13-10. The Utes never led in the game until their final drive, which began with 2:48 remaining and Utah trailing 10-6. Johnson completed 7-of-9 passes in the last two minutes—including an 11-yard completion to Brown on fourth and five that got Utah to the TCU 15-yard line. Brown finished with a career-high 105 yards on nine catches. Others who made big plays on the game-winning drive were receivers Bradon Godfrey and Brent Casteel. But most of the game centered on two of the best defenses in the nation. After relinquish-ing 10 points in the first nine minutes of the game, Utah held the Horned Frogs scoreless the remainder of the way. TCU rushed for 99 yards and a 10-3 first quarter lead before the defense settled in—holding the Horned Frogs to minus-one yard in the second quarter and 15 rushing yards in the third quarter. Ste-venson Sylvester led Utah with a season-high 10 tackles, and chipped in on one of the team’s four sacks, which counted for a total 48 lost yards. Joe Dale had nine tackles and a 16-yard sack, and Sean Smith had an interception (which he returned 37 yards to set up a Louie Sakoda field goal) and two pass breakups.

#8/7 UTAH 63, SAN DIEGO STATE 14San Diego, Calif.Qualcomm Stadium [19,342]

SAN DIEGO—Brian Johnson threw five touchdown passes, Freddie Brown had a career-high 110 receiving yards and two TDs, and Deshawn Richard scored back-to-back touchdowns on interception returns to lead Utah to a 63-14 victory over San Diego State. Utah, which clinched a share of the conference title with the win, recorded 520 yards of total offense, converted on 13-of-14 third downs and never punted. Louie Sakoda tied the school record by making nine extra point kicks and was one of the only starters still playing in the fourth quarter. The rout began early when Stevenson Sylvester forced a fumble on SDSU’s first drive and Koa Misi recovered. Johnson then marched the Utes 53 yards and found Colt Sampson in the end zone for his first of five first-half touchdowns.

#8/7 UTAH 48, #14/16 BRIGHAM YOUNG 24Salt Lake City, UtahRice-Eccles Stadium [46,488]

SALT LAKE CITY—Utah won the Mountain West Conference title outright—cap-ping an undefeated regular season with a 48-24 win over No. 14 Brigham Young on Nov. 22. Brian Johnson was brilliant in his final game in Rice-Eccles Stadium, completing 30-of-36 passes for 303 yards, four touchdowns and no intercep-tions. The second-largest crowd in school history (46,488) witnessed a close game for three quarters before the defense went on a rampage—intercepting BYU’s Heisman hopeful Max Hall five times and stripping him of the ball to stop another drive. The interceptions (two by Joe Dale) put the ball back in Johnson’s hands and he steered Utah to 21 unanswered fourth-quarter points. Senior receivers Freddie Brown (97 yards) and Brent Casteel (60 yards, 2 touchdowns) excelled in their home finale, and senior kicker/punter Louie Sakoda was perfect kicking—making both field goals and all six PAT attempts, while averaging 44.2 yards on his punts. Junior running back Matt Asiata ran for a touchdown and passed for another. Paul Kruger demoralized BYU with an interception (which he returned 30 yards to the Cougar 4-yard line), a fumble recovery, two pass breakups and six tackles. Other interceptions came from Robert Johnson and Sean Smith. Mike Wright led Utah with nine tackles.

SUGAR BOWL#7/7 UTAH 31, #4/4 ALABAMA 17New Orleans, La.Louisiana Superdome [71,872]

NEW ORLEANS—No. 7-ranked Utah, playing in its second BCS bowl game in five years, stomped heavily favored and No. 4-ranked Alabama 31-17. The Utes, who finished as the only undefeated FBS team in the nation, scored on their first three possessions to take a 21-0 first quarter lead. Alabama made a run in the second and third quarters, trimming Utah’s lead to 21-17, but could not find the end zone for the final 25 minutes. Sugar Bowl MVP Brian Johnson feasted on the nation’s No. 3-ranked defense, completing 27-of-41 passes for 336 yards and three touchdowns. Freddie Brown had a career-high 125 receiving yards, and Bradon Godfrey, David Reed and Brent Casteel all caught TD passes. The Ute defense was just as overpowering, sacking Alabama QB John Parker Wil-son eight times (three by Stevenson Sylvester) and intercepting him twice (both by Robert Johnson). Utah also stymied a Tide run game that was averaging 196 yards per game but could get just 31 against the Utes. Sylvester and Mike Wright had seven tackles each. Kepa Gaison and Sean Smith combined for 12 tackles and three sacks.
