In answer to the resolution of tile Senate, of tile 23d ultimo, I have tie honor to report, that " tlhe number ofarms required annually to supply the militia of the West is estimated at 3,500 muskets. This estimate is foundediponI the following considerations, viz: Tlie annual appropriation of $200,000 for arming and equipping tile militia,it is estimated, will iinsure Ia product of 14,000 muskets annually, and defray all the incidental expenses of inspect-ing, packing boxes, carriage to tlhe arsenals, and transportation to the respective States and Territories. Thatnumber of muskets, or other arms equivalent thereto, is therefore require(l for annual distributionn to tih whole bodyof the militia of the United States; and it is estimated that one-fourth of that number (3,500) will be required fortile militia of tie West. This proportion is founded upon the consideration that such of the western States andTerritories which would be supplied from the western armory contain one-olurth of' the entire population oft th(IUnited States.

To ascertain " tle probable Inuber of arms necessary to be placed in the military deposits located on tilewestern waters," tlhe following flets and views are respectfully submitted.

The total number of' arms, in good order for service, now deposited in the several depots of tile United States,is as follows, viz:Muskets, ---- 268,890Rilles, ---- - - - - 20,689Pistols, - - - - - - 34,859Cavalry sabres, - - -- 25,06fiArtillery swords, - - - - - -7

Total number in all the depots, - - 357,262Of the foregoing, tle following are deposited in the depots of tile West, including Pittsburg, viz:

MIuskets, ----3,96Rilles, - - - - - - 6,201.Pistols, - 10,654Cavalry sabres, --- 10,567Artillery swords, - - - - - 44

Total number in the western depots, - - - 65,54If the principle assumed with respect to arms for the militia be taken in this case also, viz: that the general

stock of arms in the country should be distributed to the principal sections of it, in a ratio proportionate to the popu-
