Assalamoalikom. Hope you are in the best state of Health & Emaan. Al Falaah Sunday School Defence Branch completed its short, yet exciting Sunday session of 6 weeks with

great passion and excitement on 25th October. Our students learnt Surah Dukhan and Surah Qaaf, along with the tafseer of Surah Yusuf.

Heartious congratulations to those students who memorised the Surahs given in the session.

The Prophet said “Whoever recites the Quran, learns it, and acts upon it will be given a crown of light to wear on the Day of

Judgement, and its light will be like the light of the sun.” (Al Hakim)

Hadtih Qudsi:

“Our Lord descends during the last third of each night to the lower heaven, and says: ‘Is

there anyone who calls on Me that I may respond to him? Is

there anyone who asks Me that I may give unto him? Is there anyone who requests My

Forgiveness that I may forgive him?’”

(Bukhari and Muslim)

RasoolAllaah (Peace be upon him) said:

“The first matter that the slave will be brought to

account for on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. If it is sound, then the rest of his deeds will be sound. And if

it is bad, then the rest of his deeds will be bad.”

کی عظمت و جاللت کا نقش اپنے دل پر بٹھانے کی سعی کرے۔ اعضاءو هللا ا وساوس کے ہجوم سے دل کو محفوظ رکھے اور

اسماء الحسنی سے متعلق غلطیوں کی اصالح

ا سے تعلق رکھتے ہیں اس لیے خود سے نام رکھن تعالی کے نام توقیفی ہیں۔ علم غیبهللا کے لیے کوئی نام بنانا: هللا اپنی طرف سے

جائزنہیں۔ جن ناموں کا قرآن و سنت سے ثبوت ملتا ےہ صرف وہ ی نام جائز ہیں۔

ن کی پہچان ہیں وہ : کافروں نے اپنے معبودوں کے جو نام بکو پکارناهللا باطل معبودوں کے نام سے کے لیےهللا نائے ہیں جوا

بھگوان، وشنو وغیرہ۔ ایسے نام دلیل کے بغیر لینا معیوب ےہ۔استعمال کرنا جائز نہیں۔ مثال

نہیں ےہ۔ بچوں کا نام رب، صمد یا رحمان رکھنا بھی غلط۔ یہ نام صرف عبد الرب، عبدالصمد یا عبد الرحمن رکھنا

جائز ہیں۔

کرنا سنت سے ثابت نہیں یہ بدعت تعالی کے ناموں کو عالج کے استعمال هللا خاص عالج کے لیے استعمال کرنا: کے ناموں کوهللا

Salah: Life’s forgotten purpose!

Man has taken many journeys throughout time. But there is one journey

that nobody has ever taken.

Nobody—except one.

On a vehicle no man has ever ridden, through a path no soul has ever seen. To a place

no creation has ever before set foot. It was the journey of one man to meet the Divine. It was the

journey of Muhammad ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص, prophet of God, to the highest heaven.

It was al Israa wal Miraaj (the magnificent journey).

On that journey Allah took his beloved prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص to the seventh heaven—a place not even angel

Gibreel could enter. In the Prophet’s mission on earth, every instruction, every commandment was

sent down through angel Gibreel. But, there was one commandment that was not. There was one

commandment so important, that rather than sending angel Gibreel down with it, Allah brought

the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص up to Himself.

That commandment was salah (prayer). When the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص was first given the command to

pray, it was to be fifty times in a day. After asking Allah to make it easier, the commandment was

eventually reduced to five times a day, with the reward of the fifty.

Reflecting upon this incident scholars have explained that the process of going from fifty to five

was a deliberate one, intended to teach us the true place salah should hold in our lives. Imagine

for a moment actually praying fifty times a day. Would we be able to do anything else but pray?

No. And that’s the point. What greater way than that to illustrate our life’s true purpose? As if to

say, salah is our real life; all the rest that we fill our day with…just motions.

And yet, we live as if it’s exactly the opposite. Salah is something we squeeze into our day, when

we find time—if that. Our ‘lives’ don’t revolve around salah. Salah revolves around our ‘lives.’ If

we’re in class, salah is an afterthought. If we’re at the mall, the Macy’s sale is more urgent.

Something is seriously wrong when we put aside the very purpose of our existence in order to

watch a basketball game.

And that is for those who even pray at all. There are those who have not only put aside their life’s

purpose, they have abandoned it completely. What we often don’t realize about the

abandonment of salah is this: No scholar has ever held the opinion that

committing zina(fornication) makes you a disbeliever. No scholar has ever held the opinion that

stealing, drinking or taking drugs makes you a disbeliever. No scholar has even claimed that

murder makes you a non-Muslim. But, about salah, some scholars have said he who abandons it, is

no longer Muslim. This is said based on ahadith such as this one: “The covenant between us and

them is prayer, so if anyone abandons it, he has become a disbeliever.” [Ahmad]

Imagine an act so egregious that the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص would speak about it is such a way. Consider for

a moment what satan did wrong. He didn’t refuse to believe in Allah. He refused to make

one sajdah. Just one. Imagine all the sajdahs we refuse to make.

Consider the seriousness of such a refusal. And yet, think how lightly we take the matter

ofsalah. Salah is the first thing we will be asked about on the Day of Judgment, and yet it is the last

thing that is on our mind. The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said: “The first thing which will be judged among a man’s

deeds on the Day of Resurrection is the Prayer. If this is in good order then he will succeed and

prosper but if it is defective then he will fail and will be a loser.” [Tirmidhi]

On that Day, the people of paradise will ask those who have entered Hell-fire, why they have

entered it. And the Qur’an tells us exactly what their first response will be: ”What led you into Hell

Fire? They will say: ‘We were not of those who prayed.’” (Qur’an, 74:42-43)

How many of us will be among those who say “we were not of those who prayed, or we were not

of those who prayed on time, or we were not of those who made prayer any priority in our lives?”

Why is it that if we’re in class or at work or fast asleep at the time of fajr and we need to use the

restroom, we make time for that? In fact, the question almost sounds absurd. We don’t even

consider it an option not to. And even if we were taking the most important exam of our lives,

when we need to go, we will go. Why? Because the potentially mortifying consequences of not

going, makes it a non-option.

There are many people who say they don’t have time to pray at work or school, or while they’re

out. But how many have ever said they don’t have time to go to the bathroom, so while out, at

work or school have opted instead to just wear Depends? How many of us just don’t feel like

waking up at Fajr time if we need to use the bathroom, and choose instead to wet our bed? The

truth is we’ll get out of bed, or leave class, or stop work, to use the bathroom, but not to pray.

It sounds comical, but the truth is we put the needs of our body above the needs of our soul. We

feed our bodies, because if we didn’t, we’d die. But so many of us starve our souls, forgetting that

if we are not praying our soul is dead. And ironically, the body that we tend to is only temporary,

while the soul that we neglect is eternal.

ابوذر نے کہا: "جی ہاں، دی ےہ۔"

فرمایا: "تو کیا آپ نے اس کی والدہ کا ذکر کیا ےہ؟"

Sacred conversation There is a time of night when the whole world transforms. During the day, chaos often

takes over our lives. The responsibilities of work, school, and family dominate much of our

attention. Other than the time we take for the five daily prayers, it is hard to also take time

out to reflect or even relax. Many of us live our lives at such a fast pace, we may not even

realize what we’re missing.

But there is a time of night when work ends, traffic sleeps, and silence is the only sound. At

that time—while the world around us sleeps—there is One who remains awake and waits

for us to call on Him. We are told in the hadith qudsi: “Our Lord descends during the last

third of each night to the lower heaven, and says: ‘Is there anyone who calls on Me that I

may respond to him? Is there anyone who asks Me that I may give unto him? Is there

anyone who requests My Forgiveness that I may forgive him?’” (Bukhari and Muslim)

One can only imagine what would happen if a king were to come to our door, offering to

give us anything we want. One would think that any sane person would at least set their

alarm for such a meeting. If we were told that at exactly one hour before dawn a check for

$10,000,000 would be left at our doorstep, would we not wake up to take it?

Allah subhanahu wa taàla (exalted is He) has told us that at this time of night, just before

dawn, He will come to His servants. Imagine this. The Lord of the universe has offered us a

sacred conversation with Him. That Lord waits for us to come speak with Him, and yet

many of us leave Him waiting while we sleep in our beds. Allah (swt) comes to us and asks

what we want from Him. The Creator of all things has told us that He will give us whatever

we ask. And yet we sleep.

There will come a day when this veil of deception will be lifted. The Qur’an says: “[It will

be said], You were certainly in unmindfulness of this, and We have removed from you your

cover, so your sight, this Day, is sharp.” (Qur’an 50:22).

On that Day, we will see the true reality. On that Day, we will realize that

two rakàt (units) of prayer were greater than everything in the heavens and the earth. We

will realize the priceless check that was left on our doorstep every night as we slept. There

will come a day when we would give up everything under the sky just to come back and

pray those two rakàt.

There will come a day when we would give up everything we ever loved in this life,

everything that preoccupied our hearts and minds, every mirage we ran after, just to have

that conversation with Allah. But on that Day, there will be some from whom Allah (swt)

will turn away… and forget, as they had once forgotten Him.

The Qur’an says: “He will say, ‘My Lord, why have you raised me blind while I was [once]

seeing?’ [Allah] will say, ‘Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot them; and thus

will you this Day be forgotten.’” (Qur’an, 20:125-126) In Surat al-Mu’minoon, Allah says:

“Do not cry out today. Indeed, by Us you will not be helped.” (Qur’an, 23:65)

Can you imagine for a moment what these ayat (verses) are saying? This is not about being

forgotten by an old friend or classmate. This is about being forgotten by the Lord of the

worlds. Not hellfire. Not boiling water. Not scalded skin. There is no punishment greater

than this.

And as there is no punishment greater than this, there is no reward greater than what the

Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص describes in the following hadith:

“When those deserving of Paradise would enter Paradise, the Blessed and the Exalted would

ask: Do you wish Me to give you anything more? They would say: Hast Thou not

brightened our faces? Hast Thou not made us enter Paradise and saved us from Fire? He

would lift the veil, and of things given to them nothing would be dearer to them than the

sight of their Lord, the Mighty and the Glorious.” [Sahih Muslim]

But one does not need to wait until that Day to know the result of this night time meeting

with Allah (swt). The truth is, there are no words to describe the overwhelming peace

in this life from such a conversation. One can only experience it to know. Its effect on one’s

life is immeasurable. When you experience qiyam, the late night prayer, the rest of your life

transforms. Suddenly, the burdens that once crushed you become light. The problems that

were irresolvable become solved. And that closeness to your Creator, which was once

unreachable, becomes your only lifeline.

Science & Miracles

Dr Andrew Newsberg of the University of Pennsylvania attempts to enlighten us with his

hidden wisdom. He studied brain wave activity during prayer and found a direct impact on

several brain locations. The benefits of prayer are incredible! Regular daily prayers halt the

frontal lobe from shrinking with age, which is the part of the brain that regulates our

speaking, reading and memory; therefore, this helps prevent memory loss in old age.

High activity was found in the anterior cingulate, the location that regulates our

connectivity to others. A high activity in this part of the brain means a healthier and happier

person. Our self-awareness is found in the parietal lobe, the overuse of which causes feelings

of isolation and loneliness, and the limbic system is where negative emotions are stimulated.

Prayer deactivates both of these areas of the brain, removing the negative emotions and

allowing us to benefit from the frontal lobe and anterior cingulate. The result is a healthier,

happier and longer life, InshaaAllaah!


It sure does! As many verses of the Qur’an reiterate,

Allah tells us to enjoin in prayer and it is not without

wisdom that Allah says: “… Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are

assured,“ [Qur’an: Chapter 13, Verse 28].

Prayer is a healer in and of itself, activating regions of the brain that make us happier and ridding negativity. It is not

just a form of worshipping Allah , but also a form of meditation: A self-help tool to bring us to a state of

tranquillity. The more regular the prayer and the deeper our

connection with Allah , the more beneficial it is for us.

The Healing power of Prayer

“And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive

[to Allah]“ [Qur’an: Chapter 2, Verse 45].

Allah is the Almighty, the Creator and Sustainer of the universe. So who better to call upon than

Him? Who better to seek ease from pain and hardship than Him?

Does Prayer Heal?

A Perfect Example In Our Prophet

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad relied on prayer as a source of comfort. As we all know, the

Prophet was tested with many trials and tribulations in his time, and it is with prayer that he found

mental calmness.

The prayer of the Prophet was always with great humbleness, full concentration and sincere

submission to the Almighty . This is what is known as the state of khushu’, a state of full awareness

of the Almighty as we direct our minds and heart to our Lord alone.

“There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern…” [Qur’an: Chapter 33,

Verse 21].

“Certainly will the believers have succeeded: They who are during their prayer humbly

submissive…” (Qur’an: Chapter 23, Verses 1-2).

This is the state that we should aim to achieve in our prayers. It is in this state that we will find the biggest

stimulations in the brain so we may reap the true benefits of prayer, In sha Allah.

The Prophet did not only pray at times of need, but would pray in all situations and occasions.

He would pray to thank Allah, seek His forgiveness, and ask for His protection and guidance.

He would offer prayer for rain, decision-making, before undertaking a journey and even during

battles; the list is endless. And, there was not a prayer that he would offer except that, through the

mercy of Allah , it brought about some sort of blessing, guidance or ease!

How Can We Attain Maximum Benefit From Prayer?

As Dr Newberg revealed, prayer performed regularly and with a deep spiritual connection, makes a

happier and healthier person. Our Prophet is a perfect example of how and when prayer should be







offered. We take from his example four practical steps by which we can gain maximum benefit from

prayer: Engage, Connect, Submit and Make Dua.

1. Engage

Incorporate prayer into your daily life. We should always focus on improving our relationship with

Allah and the best way to do this is to engage in regular prayer. So make prayer your habit. Converse

with Allah through your duas and try to connect with Him every day. Remember Him and

He will remember you.

First and foremost, make sure you pray on time — no matter how busy you are — and do not miss any

fardh prayers, especially Fajr. A busy life may make prayer harder, but prayer makes a busy life easier!

The five fardh prayers should be our first step if we have not yet already established them daily.

Abu Huraira narrated that Allah’s Messenger said:

The first thing about which the people will be called to account out of their actions on the Day of Judgment

is prayer. Our Lord, the Exalted, will say to the angels – though He knows better: Look into the prayer of My

servant and see whether he has offered it perfectly or imperfectly. If it is perfect, that will be recorded

perfect. If it is defective, He will say: See there are some optional prayers offered by My servant. If there are

optional prayer to his credit, He will say: Compensate the obligatory prayer by the optional prayer for My

servant. Then all the actions will be considered similarly. [Sunan Abi Dawud]

Once we have established the fardh prayers, we can move on to incorporating more optional prayers

into our daily lives. The more we pray, the better our connection with Allah and the more we can seek

the blessings and benefits of prayer. Take time to look into the many prayers that the Prophet taught

us to perform and their benefits, and try to incorporate as many as you can in your daily lives. Whether it

is in times of need to seek council, or in times of ease to thank Him , you can never call upon

Allah too many times.

2. Connect

Make prayer deeper and more meaningful. We must try to concentrate and allow ourselves to enjoy a

personal and proximate relationship with our Lord . The best way to do that is to pray as the Prophet

Muhammad did — with khushu. Here are some simple tips we can incorporate in our prayers to build

a stronger connection and attain maximum benefit, In sha Allah:

When you stand to pray, remember who you are standing before and humble yourself in

His presence. Pray as if it is your last prayer. Imagine Allah standing before you and the angel

of death behind you.

Know that you are in control of your mind and body. Remain still, focus on the place of sujood and

avoid thinking of worldly matters; the time of prayer should be dedicated solely to focusing on your

relationship with Allah . So let go of your worries and let yourself indulge in His love and

greatness.

Reflect and ponder on every ayah that you recite. This will help you concentrate on finding a personal

meaning and help prevent your mind from drifting. The more you reflect, the more sincere your

prayer will become.

Try to set aside time specifically for your prayers. Go to a quiet area, with least distractions possible

and truly focus on the prayer alone. If you are praying in congregation, then let the spiritual

atmosphere inspire you, not distract you.

Do not rush off from the prayer mat when you have finished your prayer. Take some time to reflect,

recite the post-prayer duas, embrace the moment of closeness to Allah and know that He is

present and listening.

3. Submit

Remember that sujood is the position in which you are the closest to Allah . Take your time and let

yourself embrace that closeness, and be warmed and comforted by it. It is best to make dua while in this

position, as per the Prophet’s recommendation:

“A slave becomes nearest to his Rabb when he is in prostration. So increase supplications while prostrating.”

[Sahih Muslim]

Ibnul Qayyim described sujood as the secret of prayer, the greatest pillar and the seal of the rukoo’. In

this position, we can truly submit ourselves to the Almighty .

In fact, further to Dr Newberg’s research, Dr. Ahmad Sakr found that the position of sujood is one method

scientifically proven to bring peace, tranquility and happiness to the one in prostration [2]. He explains

that we are all exposed to electrostatic charges from the atmosphere and ridding ourselves of these

extra charges is beneficial to one’s health. The best way to rid these extra electrostatic charges according

to Dr Ahmad Sakr, is to prostrate with one’s forehead to the ground. This brings about a calming feeling

and dissipates electromagnetic energy.

Once again, science enlightens us on the wisdoms behind sujood. Not only do we find ourselves the

closest to Allah in this position, but it also physically brings us peace and tranquility. So whenever you

are in need of mental calmness, follow the footsteps of the Prophet and prostrate to the Almighty

. It is also the best time for us to make dua, as here, we are the closest to Allah .

4. Make Dua

I need not say more. Make dua, and trust in Allah , for He knows what is best for you. Remember that

Allah alone is sufficient for us and through worshipping the Almighty with sincere submission, our

hearts will find peace In sha Allah. Trust in Him and have faith that He will always answer your

prayers.

“And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me — indeed I am near. I respond to the

invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe

in Me that they may be [rightly] guided” [Qur’an: Chapter 2, Verse 186].

“For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.” [Qur’an: Chapter 94, Verse 5].

Whether you take it from science or take it from our beautiful religion, call upon Allah with full

sincerity and submission, and you will find bliss, In sha Allah.
