Hursh, General Manager Free Bus Service on New Year's Eve ACTION ITEM RECOMMENDED ACTION(s) Consider authorizing the General Manager to provide free bus service on New Year's Eve between the hours of 8:00 p.m. on December 31, 2016 and lasting unti15:00 a.m. on January 1, 2017 BACKGROUNO/RA'nONALE Transit agencies often provide free transportation of New Year's Eve to allow for a safe alternative to intoxicated driving. A review of other regional transit agency free transportation promotions in past years found that San Francisco Muni, Santa Clara Valley transportation Authority (VTA), and SamTrans provided free fares from 8 p.m. on New Year's Eve until 5 a.m. on New Year'sDay. Staff is recommending that passengersbe allowed to board AC Transit bus lines from 8 p.m. on December 31, 2016 until 5 a.m. on January 1, 2017 as a way to encourage party-goers to leave their carsat home. The District transported approximately l0,700 passengers during this same free fare period last New Year's Eve BUDGETARY/FISCAL IMPACT The financial impact resulting from the free fares on New Year's Eve is expected to be less than $20,000 based upon ridership from New Year's Eve last year.
