TASK 3: READING

Read the text. Then read the statements below and decide whether they are True (T) or False (F). Dinosaurs Millions of years ago, long before there were any people, there were dinosaurs. In spite of the fact that nobody has ever seen a living dinosaur, most people think that they are fascinating animals. All that is known about them has been learned from their remains, because the last dinosaur became extinct or died out over 64 million years ago. The oldest dinosaur remains were mainly found in rocks, which are more than 220 million years old. We know that dinosaurs lived on Earth for about 160 million years. The first dinosaurs were small animals, which changed over time forming thousands of different species, including the largest animals that ever walked on Earth. Although the word dinosaur means ‘terrible lizard’, the name is misleading because dinosaurs were more closely related to the crocodiles and birds of today than to lizards. While many of them were very big - some were even larger than any other animal that has ever lived on dry land, some were as small as chickens. The small ones walked on their back legs, while others walked on all fours. Some dinosaurs had long necks and small heads. Others had huge horns or bodies covered with plates of bone. Some dinosaurs were meat-eaters, but most ate plants. We do not know what colour they were, but some scientists think that their bodies were probably brown and green like most living reptiles. In the time of the first dinosaurs, the dry land of the earth formed one continent. Animals were able to reach all parts of this huge area. As a result, when the continent slowly split up to form seven separate continents, dinosaurs lived on all of them. This means that their remains can be found on every continent even on Antarctica. For most of the time that dinosaurs lived on Earth the climate worldwide was quite warm. There were few high mountains. Dinosaurs lived near thick forests and slow-flowing rivers. Although people have been digging up dinosaur bones for all human history, dinosaurs were scientifically described only in the early nineteenth century. Since that time, scientists have identified nearly a thousand different dinosaur species from all continents. While some of them weighed a few kilogrammes, others’ weight reached tens of tons. There are many theories as to why the dinosaurs became extinct. The majority of scientists believe that an asteroid hit the earth and threw many tons of dust into the atmosphere, blocking the sun and creating a ‘long night’. Due to the lack of sunlight the plants died out and because almost 90 percent of dinosaurs were plant eaters, they all died too. Another theory states that the earth’s climate changed gradually over a long period of time and the dinosaurs were not able to adapt to the cooler and drier climate.

Off-road riding

A. Off-road riding, or riding bicycles on rough bumpy roads, is becoming more and more popular among women in the UK these days. Almost 15 percent of female members of the cycling club ride off-road, and mountain bikes are widely used. Our magazine ‘Safe Ride’ decided to learn why off-road riding is gaining such popularity among ladies. So earlier this year our readers were invited to write about their experiences. B. Most of the readers mentioned that exploring the world by riding a mountain bike is a very different experience. You cannot go far by walking, and ordinary bikes will easily break on the rough surface of the mountains. Some female riders started riding as a hobby while on holiday. Others started because their husbands, or ‘mad friends’ were doing it. One woman claimed she would never see much of her husband if she hadn’t started riding a mountain bike!

C. Half of the readers of our magazine said that they had ridden with a group, which consisted of women only. They thought that women were more supportive, more cooperative, more patient and less competitive than men. Such groups got enjoyment simply from riding in the countryside and not from riding for competition. Men were considered to be too keen on taking risks, and demonstrating the capabilities of their bicycles. However, some women felt that mixed company of men and women encouraged them to try harder.

D. Buying the right bike isn’t an easy task. For most women, the first bike was most commonly either too large or too small; it was hard to get good advice from a shop assistant who doesn’t see mountain biking from your point of view and isn’t a good advisor when it comes to choosing a bike. Often, shop assistants think that women cannot enjoy riding heavy mountain bikes.

E. Most of the women complained that shop assistants were not helpful. They were more interested in selling products the buyer didn’t want or need. Some of them even made sarcastic comments. Some women didn’t feel they were treated as real customers should be treated. ‘Is the bike for your son?’ is not a good question to ask a woman who is ready to spend a lot of money on a special present for herself.

F. More than 50 percent of the women suggested that you should start riding bikes with someone at your own level. This way you can gain experience and confidence gradually. You should plan to cover fewer miles than you would if you were riding on a smooth surface. And remember that there are few places to eat and drink off-road. One reader of our magazine was particularly encouraging: ‘Once you start, you’ll probably want to ride more as you discover a new sense of freedom – and that’s priceless’.

TASK 5: READING Read the text and the questions below. For each question mark the correct answer: A, B, C or D. I always had a feeling that I would study at Royal Holloway - one of the largest multi-faculty colleges of the University of London which has a well-known history and reputation. I had visited the campus a few times to see my brother and I decided to follow in his footsteps! Going to university was never a subject for debate in our house as I come from an educated family. I think my parents would have gone mad if I’d suggested not going, but fortunately I wanted to go!

One of the top universities in the UK, Royal Holloway, is quite expensive. However, I did manage financially without support from my parents as I received considerable support from the government. The third year was the most difficult financially, and I spent very little time going out with my friends. I think I spent too much on food; I did not want to eat only beans and noodles – usual food for a student. I had a proper oven and stove to cook good meals. I also needed to buy more books, though fortunately as my brother had been at Royal Holloway and had studied similar subjects, I was able to use his books.

To be admitted to Royal Holloway I needed high marks. I worked hard to get them and I succeeded. At first, I thought that university seems like a big challenge. I was not really sure how to write university essays, but soon got used to it. I think the most important thing in the first year is to develop the skills needed for the second and third years. I did not find it hard moving away from home. I was looking forward to being independent. After finishing university I moved back home and that was difficult to get used to! I was fortunate enough to have many friends in my first year, and, though I met new people in both my second and third years, a number of those from the first year are still my closest friends today.

I believe I made the right choice when I chose History. On the one hand, History was one of my favourite subjects. On the other hand, after finishing the Faculty of History, the doors are open to many different careers. History is generally well-respected in the employment world. I was offered a job as a reporter for the House of Commons in Parliament. For me it was a relatively simple process, and I’m sure the reference letters from two of my professors at Royal Holloway must have helped a lot!

1. The writer of the article is

A. a student at Royal Holloway. B. a Royal Holloway graduate. C. one of the staff at Royal Holloway. D. the head of Royal Holloway.

TASK 3: READING Read the text. Then read the statements below and decide whether they are True (T) or False (F).

A father and a son

One of the strongest relationships is that between a father and a child. While we turn to our mothers for love and support, we often need our fathers for approval and praise. Many famous men and women have talked about the importance of their fathers to them. Lee Iacocca, the president of The Chrysler Corporation, says he learned a great deal from his father – Nicola Iacocca. His father came to the United States from southern Italy at the age of twelve. He believed in America and its values. He felt that in America you had the freedom to become anything you wanted to be if you were willing to work hard and he did just that. When Nicola was twenty, he opened a car rental business. Later, he started several other businesses. It took him quite long to become a millionaire. Like his father, Lee Iacocca was interested in cars. After graduating from Princeton University in 1946, he got a job with the Ford Motor Company selling cars in Chester, Pennsylvania. Lee phoned his father every day for advice until his death in 1973. His father always said – be prepared to take risks, but always save for difficult times. As a result, Lee Iacocca has always been very careful with money. Lee Iacocca became the president in 1978 and the chairman in 1979 of The Chrysler Corporation, an American automobile manufacturer. He completely transformed the unsuccessful company into one of America’s most successful and profitable businesses. To do so he needed to take out a loan from the bank. Lee’s father was always warning him when he was a small boy not to get into debt, and if he ever borrowed anything, even 20 cents, his father advised him to write it down so as not to forget to pay it back. Iacocca wrote in his autobiography: ‘I often wondered how my father would have reacted if he’d lived long enough to see me go into debt in 1981 to keep The Chrysler Corporation in business. This was a lot more than 20 cents – the total came to 1.2 billion dollars. Although I remembered my father’s advice, I had a funny feeling that this was the loan I’d remember even without writing it down.’ Lee Iacocca also learned another important lesson from his father: aim for excellence in everything. Iacocca has always tried to follow this advice and be the best at everything. ‘People say to me, You are a great success. How did you do it? I go back to what my parents taught me. Try hard, get all the education you can, but then, do something. Don’t just stand there. Make something happen.’

The history of tattoos

A. Once considered anti-social activity common only among drunkards and sailors, tattooing is now recognised as a well-established art form. Nowadays, having a tattoo is as normal as pierced ears. According to America’s main cultural journals and newspapers, tattooing is body art that uses, special ink to permanently colour the skin. Despite its current acceptance, it was not until the early 1970s that singers and musicians such as Janis Joplin and The Rolling Stones started to openly show the tattoos on their bodies. In 1981 The Rolling Stones showed their dedication to tattooing by releasing the 16th British album Tattoo You. B. The art of tattooing has been practised for a very long time in civilized human history. The history of tattoos is ancient and seems to date thousands of years before the birth of Christ. The first records of tattoos were found in ancient Egypt. Wall paintings as old as 2000 BC are evidence of the use of tattoos in ancient Egyptian society. Today tattooing is officially recognized as an art form and many museums, galleries and educational institutions around the world organise tattoo art shows. C. Because the term ‘tattoo’ has almost the same pronunciation and the meaning throughout the world, scientists have found it difficult to determine the place of its origin. Some scientists think that the term ‘tattoo’ comes from the Polynesian word ‘tatao’, which means ‘to tap’. However, other scientists believe that the modern word ‘tattoo’ comes from a Tahitian word ‘tatu’, which means to mark something. It should be noted though that the Georgian term sviringi has no resemblance to the English pronunciation. D. People of many different civilisations in the past coloured their body parts for different reasons. In a few groups and religions, tattoos are an integral part of their beliefs. Those who belong to these religions are obliged to have a tattoo on their body. While for some groups tattooing is a ritual, for others it’s simply a joyous way to show their beliefs to the world. In some countries, tattoo marks help to demonstrate that a person has a high rank. Today, many musicians feel that it is their duty to have a tattoo of their group’s name on their shoulders. E. The first electric tattoo machine was invented in 1890 by an American tattoo artist named Samuel O’Reilly. The electric tattoo machine gave birth to a new era of tattooing in which people started to put different kinds of tattoos on various parts of their bodies. More and more people put different marks and figures on their bodies. Though tattoo machines are becoming more complex as the years go by, the mechanical principle behind them remains the same whether it is electric or digital. F. Tattooing took centuries to become so widely accepted. Today one can find tattoos as a fashion symbol rather than a simple mark. Tattooing indeed has spread across oceans. Even people in less developed countries have tattoos. The tattoo art that seemed like nonsense to previous generations has truly become an integral part of the fashion of the new generation.

TASK 5: READING Read the text and the questions below. For each question mark the correct answer: A, B, C or D.

Several years ago, a British TV company decided to carry out an experiment and find out if a student’s success and behaviour depended on the quality of his school. For this purpose, the TV company selected a student from a poor family, Ryan Bell. At his school, which was not considered the best, Ryan regularly caused problems and was in conflict with his teachers and other students. He was not a good student and his grades in every subject were below average. The experiment was a stroke of luck for the 14-year-old boy. The TV company sent Ryan to an expensive private school where he had every opportunity to study well. When he was asked if he might have trouble adjusting to the new school, Ryan simply responded, ‘Don’t worry, all 14-year-old guys are the same – we like cars and girls!’

In many ways Ryan’s first year at his new school was a success. He was brilliant at Latin and joined the rugby team where he was one of the best players. His mother was very proud. She hoped her son would get a good education, earn money and even support her. Ryan had never dreamt of going to university before. Now, he started talking of becoming a TV journalist. At his new school Ryan got on well with the other students. There were a few problems but they were not serious at first. The first incident was when Ryan was caught drawing graffiti on the wall. The school didn’t pay attention to that, but when Ryan took another boy’s mobile phone without asking, the school authorities did not allow him to attend classes for a week.

A week after that, Ryan and his school friends went to the nearest town and bought some beer. Ryan drank so much that he got sick and was taken to hospital. The school sent him away and did not allow him to return to school because he had already been in trouble twice before. Many people thought it was unfair because he was due to take his exams a month later. The school insisted that the rules were the same for everyone. After Ryan left his second school, the public started to criticize the experiment. Some argued that Ryan had been under too much pressure and that it was unfair not to allow him to attend classes. Everyone seems to agree that Ryan should be given a chance to continue his studies at the university.

1. A TV company is mentioned in the text to tell us that A. the school has its own TV station. B. this TV company decided to do an experiment. C. TV affects students. D. TV programmes are good for students.

TASK 3: READING Read the text. Then read the statements below and decide whether they are True (T) or False (F).

Atlantis – an everlasting mystery

The legend of Atlantis is one of the oldest and most fascinating of all the world’s mysteries. It has confused both skeptics and believers. Where exactly was Atlantis and where is it now? What caused its disappearance? Exactly how advanced were the Atlanteans? Many international archaeological teams have set off to find answers to these questions, but with no success. The legendary continent of Atlantis has caught the imagination of scholars for centuries. The earliest known records of this mythical land appear in the Greek philosopher Plato’s dialogue Critias. Plato wrote about Atlantis’ architecture, engineering and ceremonies in detail. Many people, even Plato’s own students, thought this place was imaginary, but Plato argued that Atlantis was real and filled with more wonders than anyone could imagine. Plato believed that this great continent was technologically advanced but had been destroyed by a tsunami and had sunk in the sea. Plato believed that Atlantis was located somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. In fact, the ocean got its name from Atlantis. Plato claimed that Atlantis was an underwater continent approximately the size of Libya and Asia put together. Modern scientific surveys of the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean show no sign of this continent. However, modern satellite photos of southern Spain reveal rectangular forms on the ground appearing to match descriptions made by Plato. ‘Today’s scientific discoveries may change attitudes about Atlantis and prove that it was not a myth, but a true story, as Plato always claimed,’ says Georgeos Diaz-Montexano, a Cuban archaeologist who has spent the last 15 years searching for the underwater continent. The Cuban archaeologist believes the rectangular features could be the remains of a ‘silver’ temple devoted to the sea god Poseidon and a ‘golden’ temple devoted to goddess Cleito - all described in Plato’s work. The Cuban archaeologist claims that the war between Atlantis and the eastern Mediterranean described in Plato’s writings closely resembles accounts of attacks on Egypt, Syria, Lebanon and Israel during the 12th century BC by mysterious invaders known as the Sea People. Georgeos Diaz-Montexano proposes that the Atlanteans and the Sea People were in fact one and the same. After seeing a satellite photo of the supposed underwater continent the Cuban archaeologist tried to attract other archaeologists to excavate the site. But this was impossible as the features in the satellite photo are located in Donana National Park in Spain. Eventually in 2009 and 2010, the team of archaeologists and geologists studied the site using a combination of deep-ground radar, digital mapping, and underwater technology without digging the park up. Experts believe that further study will allow them to come to a final conclusion.

History of a hairstyle

A. Hairdressing is the art of arranging hair or, in other words, modifying its natural state. Hairdressing has been an important part for both men and women’s appearance since ancient times and, like clothing, has a number of functions. In almost all societies, people have found it necessary to have their hair cut in order to keep it out of the faces. Another extremely important function of hair styling, especially in traditional pre-industrial societies, was to frighten enemies. For this purpose some men fastened bones, feathers, and other objects into their hair to look more violent. B. Christian and Buddhist monks shave their heads to indicate “renunciation”, which is the act of rejecting the physical pleasures of the world. Monks shave off their hair to symbolise simplicity and their separation from materialism. The symbolism of a particular hairstyle is also seen in the single long lock on the shaved heads of Muslim men by which, they believe, Allah will pull them up to heaven. C. Hair arrangement can also clearly show how old a person is and whether a person is married or not. Boys in ancient Greece cut their hair and Hindu boys shaved their heads at the age of sixteen. In medieval Europe unmarried women wore long, elegant hair uncovered, while married ones kept their hair covered with scarves. When a member of their family died, the ancient Egyptians usually grew their hair long, while Hindu women usually cut their hair off. D. From the late Middle Ages, hairstyles in the West have been greatly influenced by changing fashion. In the 17th century, for example, courtiers who followed Louis XIV, the king of France, wore wigs, that is artificial hair, because Louis XIV did not have hair and wore a wig. In the 20th century women of all classes followed the example of film stars with styles such as the silver blond hair of Jean Harlow, a famous American actress. This trend continues in the 21st century too. E. In the 20th century with the growth of the economy and improvements in mass communication, both men and women started to use various styles, cuts and colours of hair. Many hairstyles were connected to historical events. Some young women wore short, sleek bobs. By smoking cigarettes, wearing heavy makeup and styling their hair, women demonstrated their independence and protested against traditional social norms and customs. F. Today women and men can choose from a broad range of hairstyles, but they still are not totally free in their choice, as they are still expected to wear hair in accordance to their gender. For example, in most countries, men with long hair and women with very short and untidy hair may surprise people. This is somewhat less true for African-American men, who wear their hair in a variety of styles that may be exactly the same for men and women.

TASK 5: READING Read the text and the questions below. For each question mark the correct answer: A, B, C or D.

At the age of 29 I had everything: my own company, two houses – one in London, one in Paris – and a husband. One year later I was homeless and penniless.

My parents were rich and I grew up in a large house in London. I went to a private school and at the weekends I spent most of the time with my pony. My mother left when I was eight and I lived with my father. I had several French nannies whose job was to look after me at home. This was good for my French, which I spoke fluently by the time I left school. I was never really close to my father. He was too busy looking after his business and was happy with me as long as I produced good school reports.

After school I got a degree in business, as I thought this would be good training for the future. In some way it was, but the most useful skill I had was my ability to deal with people well and make good social contacts. Soon with my father’s help, I started my own company. I had a lot of money and an interesting social life. When your life’s like this, you never think what it’s like to have problems. You don’t know what it’s like not to have money.

One evening I met Richard. He was so charming, and seemed so full of original ideas. I wanted to marry him immediately, but my father was against our marriage. I couldn’t understand why. It was true that Richard didn’t have a job, but he was very educated and talented, and was full of really promising ideas. I helped Richard borrow money from the bank and put my company and houses as a guarantee. In the end, we got married, but without my father’s permission.

One morning I woke up and Richard wasn’t there. I had two months to sell my houses in London and Paris. My company had already been taken away by the bank. I didn’t have any money left. My father refused to help me, and I had to look for a room in a house where homeless people lived. None of my ‘friends’ wanted to see me, and no one would help. I wonder if I will ever get out of this situation. I feel horrible. I realize I made too many mistakes – I just looked at people’s appearances and never looked at what was beneath the surface. Looking back, I can see how stupid I was.
