Howard Hawks (1896 –1977)

Howard Hawks was an influential American film director, producer and screenwriter of the classic Hollywood era. He is popular for his films from a wide range of genres such as Scarface (1932), Bringing Up Baby (1938), Only Angels Have Wings (1939), His Girl Friday (1940), Sergeant York (1941), The Big Sleep (1946), Red River (1948), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) and Rio Bravo (1959).

Hawks was versatile as a director, filming comedies, dramas, gangster films, science fiction, film noir, and Westerns. Hawks' own functional definition of what constitutes a "good movie" is revealing of his no-nonsense style: "Three great scenes, no bad ones.“ Hawks also defined a good director as "someone who doesn't annoy you".

While Hawks was not sympathetic to feminism, he popularized the Hawksian woman archetype, which could be considered a prototype of the modern post-feminist movement.

His directorial style and the use of natural, conversational dialogue in his films were cited a major influence on many noted filmmakers, including Robert Altman, John Carpenter, and Quentin Tarantino. Critic Leonard Maltin labeled Hawks "the greatest American director who is not a household name," noting that, while his work may not be as well known as Ford, Welles, or DeMille, he is no less a talented filmmaker.

Mel Brooks (1926- )

Melvin "Mel" Kaminsky, better known by his stage name Mel Brooks, is an American film director, screenwriter, composer, lyricist, comedian, actor and producer, best known as a creator of broad film farces and comic parodies. Brooks won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony award. Three of his films (Blazing Saddles, The Producers and Young Frankenstein) ranked in the Top 20 on the American Film Institute's list of the Top 100 comedy films of all-time.

Brooks’ 1970s films — especially Blazing Saddles (1974), Young Frankenstein (1974), and High Anxiety (1977) — benefited from Mel being at his creative peak, with his zaniness at a high level mark, and his satires of movie genres having solid foundations upon which to play.

Mel’s 1970s films were especially appealing to moviegoers of the decade because they were full of anti-establishment philosophy and irreverent humor. Brooks’ 1970s films seemed very fresh to moviegoers of that era while by the 1980s many felt that Mel was beginning to repeat himself and had less solid targets to satirize.

After 1995’s Dracula: Dead and Loving It, a less than stellar spoof, Mel seemed at a career low. A few years later, he was back at the top with a tremendous Broadway hit, the 2001 musical The Producers. Later, after a great personal loss — the death of Anne Bancroft in 2005 — he bounced back by returning to work on the upcoming Broadway musical version of Young Frankenstein.

Robert Altman (1925 –2006)

Robert Altman was an American film director known for making films that are highly naturalistic, but with a stylized perspective. In 2006, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recognized his body of work with an Academy Honorary Award.

His films MASH and Nashville have been selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.

Altman favored stories showing the interrelationships between several characters; he stated that he was more interested in character motivation than in intricate plots. As such, he tended to sketch out only a basic plot for the film, referring to the screenplay as a "blueprint" for action, and allowed his actors to improvise dialogue. This is one of the reasons Altman was known as an "actor's director", a reputation that helped him work with large casts of well-known actors.
