CAWSAND BAY:
A popular anchorage with good holding and plenty ofspace, just off the twin villages of Kingsand andCawsand. Sheltered in the prevailing winds, particularlythe south-west, this can be a wonderful lunchtime orovernight stop. There's plenty of room to land on thebeach and sample one of the several good pubs whilstadmiring your boat. Although only a few miles fromPlymouth Yacht Haven, this bay feels like a differentpart of the world, largely because it's tucked away ona peninsula and takes what seems like several days totravel to by road!
POLPERRO:
Approximately 16 miles west of Plymouth and nestledamongst spectacularly rugged cliffs, Polperro makes agreat lunchtime or overnight stop in settled weather.Often bypassed because of its proximity to Fowey,Polperro is the epitome of the Cornish fishing village, with a steep hill running down past whitewashedcottages to a classical granite harbour. Berthing withinthe harbour is limited and tidal, but there are a handfulof vistors moorings in the entrance, and small boats canland at the end of the eastern pier. It’s one of ourfavourite destinations for a day out!

FOWEY:
Probably one of the best known of the Cornish harbourswhich you probably don’t need us to tell you about! Butif you haven’t yet found your way here, it makes theperfect weekend destination if cruising from PlymouthYacht Haven – a mere 22 or so miles distant, withdeepwater access, sheltered moorings, beautiful sceneryand plenty to do ashore – eateries to suit every taste, and plenty of interesting galleries and shops. Theapproach and entrance to Fowey is straightforward; butin busy times call Fowey Harbour Radio on VHF Ch 12 andthe helpful harbour staff will guide you to a mooring. There are no marinas in the harbour but there are threeshort-stay (max 2 hours) walk ashore pontoons – two inFowey and one in Polruan on the eastern bank. Howeverthe best thing to do is either pick up a visitor’s mooringin the harbour and either use your dinghy or the watertaxi to get ashore – call Fowey Water Taxi on VHF Ch 06.Our tip for a visit here is not to overlook Polruan –it has two great pubs, the Lugger and the Russell,a brilliant grocery and general store and somespectacular clifftop walks.
Beyond Fowey, the coast turns to the SW and hides avariety of fascinating spots. Anchor off Polkerris andenjoy as trip to the Rashleigh Arms or “Sams on theBeach” – a particularly good spot for children as thebeach is sheltered and great for swimming.

MEVAGISSEY:
On the Western side of St Austell Bay are the twinvillages of Mevagissey and Gorran Haven. Mevagisseywelcomes visiting yachts whenever possible. Berths areavailable on the South pier, which is safe as long as thewind is not in the East. If wind is from the East it’srecommended to proceed to Fowey. Visiting craft mustnot moor in the inner harbour and should ask permissionif they need to enter. For bilge keel yachts and twin hullsthat can take the beach safely there is normally spaceavailable on the East side of the West Quay. There is atrot of 3 cylindrical visitors buoys, to moor fore and aft, inside the harbour mouth adjacent to the north pier. Theharbour master can be contacted on VHF channel 16,using channel 14 as a working channel, or telephone01726 843305.
EXPLORING EAST OF PLYMOUTH:
From Plymouth to Salcombe is an easy run ofapproximately 20nm. However, there are numerousanchorages and coves worthy of exploration beyondthe River Yealm.
CELLAR BAY:
Tucked just inside the mouth of the River Yealm, thissecluded spot is a perfect swimming destination insettled weather. Deep keeled boats will need to checktide-tables and be aware of the sandbar in the riverentrance, but this really is an ideal spot for a picnic. On a rising tide, it's great to follow a stop here with ameander up the creek at Noss Mayo, where you cantie up alongside the pub at high water and sample thedelights of these pretty twin villages.

STOKE BEACH:At the western end of Bigbury Bay and approximately3 miles to the east of the mouth of the River Yealm. Withthe wind in the north or west, a pretty and shelteredshort stopover, and a popular yet uncrowded beach forswimming.
MOTHECOMBE BEACH:Mothecombe Beach, identified by the old tea-room,constructed by the owners of Flete in the last century forprivate picnics, is privately owned by the Flete Estate, but is open to the public on certain days of the week. For more information, visit www.flete.co.uk. The estuaryto the east and north of the beach dries at LW, but is amecca for paddleboarding, kayaking and windsurfing, and can be explored upstream by dinghy for a couple ofmiles. The estuary is carefully managed as a haven forwildlife, and kingfishers, cormorants and herons are justsome of the many species which may be spotted.
THE RIVER ERME:Quite possibly one of the most unspoilt stretches of theDevon coastline, the mouth of the Erme is a beautifullocation in settled conditions. There is limited depthinshore; it is possible to wade across the river fromMothecombe to Wonwell an hour either side of low tide. However, don’t let this put you off as the wide expanseof flat sands are firm enough to dry out motor boats andbilge keelers, and in offshore winds, an anchorage canbe found on the western side of the estuary mouth.Between the Erme and the River Avon, the cliffs arespectacular, backing onto mainly National Trustfarmland. There are a small number of offlying rocks, soa large scale chart of the area is as ever, recommended.Another 3nm to the east will be found Burgh Island, which is always best passed to the south.

One of the reasons for Plymouth’s popularity as a homeberth is it’s central location, ideally placed whicheverway the wind is blowing.
To the west lie the evocative and beautiful cruisinggrounds of Falmouth, Mylor and the Helford River, then onto Penzance and the unique Scilly Isles, then onto the legendary welcome of Ireland.
Crossing the Channel, another iconic trip, to the newmarina of Roscoff, ideal with the ferry port literally nextdoor to the marina. Then on to Brittany and then south“until the butter melts’.
Going east from Plymouth, Salcombe or Dartmouth arethe perfect Devon harbours to visit, and use for aspringboard on to the Channel Islands, Normandy orWeymouth, Poole, Lymington and the Solent.
