We appreciate that some of our pupils are completing their work on paper rather than electronically and this is

completely fine. Can we ask when the work is returned to school and given into the member of staff in

reception that the name of the pupil and the teachers/subject the work is for is written on the work. This is just

to ensure that the work is able to get to the appropriate staff member as quickly as possible.

20% of achievement points in Classcharts have been selected for this award. Well done!

What are the LLC Staff Reading this

Week?

This week, Miss Jones is reading The Gender Game

by Bella Forrest

This dystopian novel is part of a 7 book Series which

is recommended for fans of ‘The Hunger Games’ and

‘Divergent’. As a fan of both I had to read this.

This book follows the story of Violet Bates who is a

citizen of Matrus - the matriarchal society which

elevated the powers of women whilst denying men

most of their rights. As part of a deal to escape the

juvenile faculty she is part of, Violet agrees to a

secret governmental mission which involves

marrying Lee and moving to Patrus. As you may have

guessed, Matrus is the patriarchal society which

strips women of their rights whilst men enjoy

elevated powers. Each society reveals individuals

who are unhappy with their life but everyone

conforms to the government. Throughout the novel

we see Violet adapt to her new marriage and society,

make an unlikely alliance and find out more about

her secret mission.

By the end of the novel I was invested - I NEEDED to

know more. I’m currently on the fourth novel ‘The

Gender War’ and the series has kept me guessing.

It’s been weeks since the nightmare started but finally he’s coming home

where he belongs. The days have turned into weeks, It has been so long

since I’ve seen him. The private ambulance along with the nurses brought

him home, as they walked through the door there was silence apart from

the angry tearless sigh from my brave mum as she squeezed my hand

tight.

No one spoke it was airy, silence was all around. Not much sleep was had

by anyone, I could hear the sobbing of my parents as I led there still trying

to get to sleep.

Morning came, I knew I had to go into the bedroom and see him for the

first time in six weeks. The room had been made to look beautiful, with

snowdrops and candles around his bed. My heart was pounding out of my

chest as I’ve never seen a dead body before especially my little baby

brother.

‘How can this happen, why? He is only a 4 years old’. This was the

conversation going around and around in my head. As I peered over the

bed he’s was wrapped in blankets looking peaceful, just like he was

sleeping. Only a small poppy like bruise on his temple. The car must have

hit him hard and his little body just couldn’t cope with the impact.

‘Sleep tight’ I whispered ‘until we meet again’.

Did you know that the most popular baby names chosen in England so far this year are Luna and Asher?

Miss Williams’ Fact of the Week!

We pronounce the combination "ough" in 9 different

ways, as in the following sentence which contains

them all: "A rough-coated, dough-faced, thoughtful

ploughman strode through the streets of Scarborough;

after falling into a slough, he coughed and hiccoughed."

We have many famous landmarks in Cymru. Here are some facts about two of them. Can you find out about any other landmarks?

Y Stadiwm Principality – The Principality Stadium – was built in 1999. Though it’s known today by its above name, it is officially called the Millennium

Stadium and has been called The Principality Stadium since 2016.

Who designed the Stadium?

The Guardian of the Valleys is a memorial to the

miners who lost their lives in the 1960 pit explosion in Six Bells, Abertyleri. In total, 45 men were killed.

“Colli Iaith” (The Loss of a Language) was composed by a famous Welsh composer, Harri Webb. It’s a song of loss of the Welsh language over time, and all that comes with it – status, heart, and soul. It also tells of the loss of famous Welsh places, such as Elan, Tryweryn, Claerwen, and Llanddwyn, many of which were drowned to provide water to surrounding English villages. Mrs Twinberrow’s pick of the week!

The Chorus (French: Les Choristes) is a 2004 French

drama film directed by Christophe Barratier. Co-

written by Barratier and Philippe Lopes-Curval, it is

an adaptation of the 1945 film A Cage of

Nightingales (La Cage aux rossignols). Pierre (Jean-

Baptiste Maunier) is an aimless child at an austere

boarding school in France. The students and faculty

are constantly at odds with one another, until a

music teacher, Clément Mathieu (Gérard Jugnot),

arrives and starts a choir. Clément -- who has

troubles of his own -- tries to change the

reactionary policies of the school, choosing instead

to encourage his students. His efforts have a

particular impact on Pierre, who shows great

musical promise.

Miss Webb- Mine is ‘I predict a Riot’ by the Kaiser Chiefs. This song

reminds me of my teenage years when I used to listen to indie bands

and think I was cool. I tried to teach myself to play guitar once and the

first riff was one of the only things I managed to learn. It makes me feel

happy as I can picture myself when I was younger, completely carefree

and loving life. The lyrics also suggest breaking out and of course,

rioting which I like to do in the form of dancing.

Mr Smith- ‘Slow Life’ by ‘The Super Furry Animals’ always makes me

think of lush sunny days with friends, barbecues, and chilling in the

summer.

Mrs Burns- Mine is ‘I will Survive’ by ‘Gloria Gaynor’. I used to sing this

with my best friends when in school, we used to use our hairbrushes

instead of microphones. We still meet up after all these years!

This week our KS3 pupils have been busy completing their Olympic projects by designing and

participating in their own ‘At Home Olympics’. There has been some fantastic and creative work sent in

and we have loved seeing all the family competitions that have taken place over the past week, with

many parents showing the young ones how it’s done! Examples of this great work can be found on our

social media accounts.

Year 9 GCSE PE pupils are now combining all the knowledge and understanding they have gained over

the school year to answer a number of past paper questions over the coming weeks. Our Year 10 GCSE

pupils are now beginning their contemporary studies by researching the factors that affect

participation for minority groups within our society. The Prize Question for last week was won by Year

9 pupil Rhys Phillips with a perfectly applied answer to the training zones question – well done Rhys!

Home learning can and does present many different challenges for each of our pupils and we are

especially proud of all their hard work, independence and resilience in overcoming many of these new

challenges – a huge well done to all and keep it up!

Blaenau Gwent Educational Psychology Service (BG EPS)

We in BG EPS will continue to support our community in these challenging times. We recognise that the

current school closures and the concerns about Corona Virus may increase the worries of children and

families.

We will be available to provide advice to help parents and carers in meeting the learning and wellbeing

needs of their children. We have set up an ‘EPS Support Line’ for parents and carers to contact us.

and include a telephone contact and brief information about advice required. We will respond as soon as
