A New Way to Look at Ourselves

What Do We Know About the Digital Native? Today's students – K through college – represent the

first generations to grow up with this new technology. Their entire lives surrounded by and using computers,

videogames, digital music players, video cams, cell phones, and all the other toys and tools of the digital age.

Computer games, email, the Internet, cell phones and instant messaging are integral parts of their lives.

Students today are all “native speakers” of the digital language of computers, video games and the Internet.

What Do We Know About the Digital Immigrant? We are adapting to this new environment! As Digital Immigrants learn – like all

immigrants, some better than others – to adapt to their environment, they always retain, to some degree, their "accent," that is, their foot in the past.

What does “dial” a number mean today for the Immigrant for the Native?

What Do Digital Natives Like?

Receiving information really fast. Parallel process and multi-task. Prefer their graphics before their text Prefer random access (like hypertext). They function best when networked. They thrive on instant gratification and

frequent rewards. They prefer games to “serious” work.

What Do Digital Immigrants like? teach – slowly step-by-step one thing at a time Individually above all, seriously.

How do we catch up with them? Accept – they will always be ahead! What is the mantra – for both educators

and students?

We are all learners. We are all teachers.

What Challenges Do We Face? today the ‘right answers’ and ‘best

practices’ exist only as ideas and experiments, or do not exist at all.

One of our comfortable zones is – storytelling Stories catch people's interest. Jesus was a master storyteller. His parables made it easier to understand a

deep truth. They challenged without demanding. Preachers and Teachers also use stories and

parables to enliven interest and deepen understanding.
