W/lll GREAlIS EXPOSED: In an effort to clarify t he position of your RPM Editor, we wo uld like to make some facts known
to our distant readers (since all of t his is common knowledge to our . rea~ers in our immediate area). Walt Grealis who
publ ishes and edits Rf'!o1 has had a thorough background of promotion work with two breweries in Canada and prior to start-
ing RPM wa s Promotion Man ager of MacKay Records (London), Promotion and sales with Apex (Ontario) and finally, promotion
with lamarac Records (Canada) , a position he had to give up to dedicate more time to RPM and furt he ring the cause of
Canadian t al ent. Publishing RPM is only part of t he job,Walt also writes on t he Canadian scene for t he American Trade
magazine "Music Bus iness" and is Personal Manager of SH IR LEY MATT HEWS, JAYSON KING, DAVE MICKIE, RONNIE WHITE and
GREG HAMBLETO N. Recently Walt started Colonel Walt Music, a BMI firm dedicated to further promote Canadian songs and
songwriters. His firm Walt Grealis' IMAGES is uniquely dedicated to building Canadian Music and Canadian artists. He
maintains an open door policy and advises and assists artists regardless of who they are associated with. The net
result will be a bigger and better •usic industry in Canada. "We are co111pletely above board and beyond reproach. I
don't write RPM, t he industry does. I •erely put the words in print. No one has been refused a voice, and never will."
Early in his career Walt was a 1ember of the RCMP and pioneered Sk"ydiving and Sport Parachuting in Canada,
If you make it in TlME (magazine) you've 1ade it. Thats exactly what happened to the new London release "20th Century

A suggestion has COiie to us fro1 the owner of a Hamilton radio station regarding a good Canada Day promotion. We feel
this suggestion has great merit and pass it on. It is surprising how few people in Canada are aware of the Canadian Bi'll
of Rights. Canada Day would be a good ti11e to produce a series of promos informing the public of the great significance
of this Bill and what it •eans to each of us, perhaps 1 even quoting parts of the Bill
and expounding on their meaning. SQunds like a good "Public Service Promotion" even
after July lst. lihile on the "be a good Canadian" kick we might mention a recent
incident in a •ajor Oshawa hotel involving a US visitor and a cashier. The exchange
rate offered on US funds was 5% which would discourage any tourist. We learned
radio stations coul d produce promos to encourage store owners and service station employees to pay a fair share of ex-
change on US funds.
SUBSCRIBE TO RPM: This week our new format makes RPM bigger and better to serve the Canadian industry. We are dedicated
to bringing to you the best possible publication of its kind. We feel that we are not of age yet to expect national
breakouts, t herefore we are featuring regional breakouts each week in the significant action column and instigating a
top t unes policy to indi cate best sellers nationally.
A very ea rly report frOll ALEX PASCAL PD at C~DM Dauphin shouting praises for newie "Chantilly Lace" by THE BEAVERS on

CANADA DAY 1964 will be a t ruly Canadian day at many stations across t he BIGL.ANO. The response to our suggestion to program 100% Canadian content for July lst. was very encouraging. Granted, it would be a little difficult for the top rorty stations to make a full day of it but we understand a number of these stations will atteqit to program more of_ the domestic product fo r t his day. CHRIS LAWRENCE, CHrI Toronto, one of Can ada 's best known !JolP DJ's has co~iled a list of what he considers the most request ed of Canadian LP's. Chri s is a great booster of Canadian talent. In addition to playing t hese records f requently throughout the week he ·sets aside an hour every Thursday to interview and play only Canadian recording artists. WHITEY HAINES of BMI commented "twenty-five •ore 111en like Chris with shows like this all across t he country could be the making of t he Canadi an recording industry."

R.~~. •• Canada as a hit break-ing mark.et is establishing itself mare and more each
day. Recently one of the fea rless stations latched
onto a single by Bernadette Carrol (an impassible
name) called "Party Girl" and took it to the top of
their chart. This is a great move to11ard making
the programming of music in Canada ••• DISTINCTIVELY
CANADIAN. Many PDs and MDs 110uld fear the possible
loss of a rati ng or t110, and 110n 1t pioneer a hit
or if they do start on a good ne11 single, llill drop it Iii th egg on their face so as to accomodate the
great shepherd and the rest of the flock who dicr
tate llhat you llill "dig" tomorro11. Once a PD or MD
lists a record ••• our feeling is that it becomes the
responsibility of the station and DJs to take it as
far up the ladder as the immediate market warrants.
The TOP FORTY 5s chart can be influenced by one
station with a ffl record llhich no one else is list-
ing because of our small market. Remember, we sell
as many records in Canada as they do i n the city of Philadelphia. That's what they say. Rita Pavone
comes up with tllD sides in this country. Split air
lion is so strong on this one that 11e feel it's a
tllD sider. It's interesting to observe that si.J:
months ago ••• 30% of the sound we are programming today 110uldn 't have stood a chance at any time of
day, . re~a rdless of where it came from. It i s strang; llhat hysteria can do to our 11ay of life. We can
now appreciate the feeling of many PDs six mo nt hs
ago in regard ta "raunchy" music. Blues shouters
at 2.30 in t he afternoon •••• come an!!! I! A new
version of "Yesterdays Gone" by t he Overlanders
(English) seems ta be taking over the Stuart r. Clyde ve rsion.
