The fire started at 10SO oclock andwas caused by an overheated furnace j

Probably 310 children were in thebuilding at the moment when the s

alarm rang out The teachers werebeside the children and the little oneslaughing thinking it was a fire drill onthe lower floor saw fiames shootingup from the basement began scream-Ing and a rush was made for the front 1

door which opened inward and a massI

of bodies plied up against it I

The first little bodies were crushedI

into an unrecognizable mass One ladleaped up and walked over the tangledmuss of heaped bodies safely otherstried to follow and

they piled upthigher until those underneath weresuffocated Those near the door were

I not burned but were either crushed orsuffocated and cut off from escape by

the mass oflbodiow at the front doorI The children in the second and third

floors tried windows Those in the at ¬

tic were carried down fire escapes toI safety The children oil the third floor I

were trapped without hope w escape I

became insane from fear and ran downthe stairs until they met the sweep ¬

ing flanies and perishedEstimates say that over seventyfive

children lost their lives Nothing isleft of the building but the four wallsThirty bodies have boon taken fromthe ruins ft is legit that the wallsmay fall at any moment and entombother bodies now past hope of recov-ery

A great pile of bodies is at whatwas the front door of the buiMingMothers and friends and firemen arctugging away at heaps of debris in an

unorganized search for bodies Privatehomes near the fire have been con-verted

into temporary morgues-It will be impossible to lix the total

number of dead until a house to housecanvass has been completed-One Hundred and SixtyFive Corpses

I At 10 oclock last night one hundredand sixtyfive corpses were in themorgue at Collinwood six childrenwere still unaccounted for and all thehospitals and houses for two miles

Only Eighty Escaped Unhurt-All of the victims were between the
