Their Lives in a Fire Trap Which Did Duty as an Ohio- as an Ohio School Cleveland March 5Over 300 child- ren I V were trapped in a fire at the North Collinswood school yesterday The fire started at 10SO oclock and was caused by an overheated furnace j 1 Probably 310 children were in the building at the moment when the s alarm rang out The teachers were beside the children and the little ones laughing thinking it was a fire drill on the lower floor saw fiames shooting up from the basement began scream- Ing and a rush was made for the front 1 door which opened inward and a mass I of bodies plied up against it I The first little bodies were crushed I into an unrecognizable mass One lad leaped up and walked over the tangled muss of heaped bodies safely others tried to follow and I they piled up t higher until those underneath were suffocated Those near the door were I not burned but were either crushed or suffocated and cut off from escape by I the mass oflbodiow at the front door I The children in the second and third I floors tried windows Those in the at ¬ tic were carried down fire escapes to I safety The children oil the third floor I were trapped without hope w escape I became insane from fear and ran down the stairs until they met the sweep ¬ ing flanies and perished Estimates say that over seventyfive children lost their lives Nothing is left of the building but the four walls Thirty bodies have boon taken from the ruins ft is legit that the walls may fall at any moment and entomb other bodies now past hope of recov- ery ¬ A great pile of bodies is at what was the front door of the buiMing Mothers and friends and firemen arc tugging away at heaps of debris in an unorganized search for bodies Private homes near the fire have been con- verted ¬ into temporary morgues- It will be impossible to lix the total number of dead until a house to house canvass has been completed- One Hundred and SixtyFive Corpses I At 10 oclock last night one hundred and sixtyfive corpses were in the morgue at Collinwood six children were still unaccounted for and all the hospitals and houses for two miles I around contained numbers of children some fatally and many
