Transcript of Understanding Environmental Degradation under ISA by the students of SBGJ, Guwahati

There are three dustbins placed on the different floors of the school building categorized as :-

1) Biodegradable – The wet wastes are thrown in the biodegradable waste. 2) Non- biodegradable - The dry waste are thrown in the non- biodegradable dustbin.3) Recyclable - Then both the biodegradable and non- biodegradable wastes are segregated and categorized into the recyclable dustbin.

The waste in Biodegradable bins are then carried to the composting pits.

The garden wastes (crop residue) like chopped dry twigs, straw, banana stems etc. are mixed with the organic wastes from the classrooms.

Later, the dry cattle dung is added to the whole mixture. In semi-solid state it is kept for 20 days before being put to the pit for worm bedding(vermi bed).

After 20 days, the bedding for the worms is made with the compost ( decayed organic matter). The bedding is kept moist (60%) favorable for the worms to live on and turn the compost into soil nutrients or natural fertilizers.

The castings( vermi compost) formed on the top are collected once a week. Sieving of the composted material ( To separate it completely) is done and then later it is packed.

The school also maintains a plot for gardening where students are taught and shown how plants can be

grown in an organic way with vermi compost.
