The history of... Thief River Falls By Gretchen Beito Thief River Falls first developed as a lumber milling town. It also became a major agricultural service area because of the rich soil left by ancient, glacial Lake Agassiz.
The unusual name, “Thief River,” was given to the river by the Ojibwe and Dakota people. “Falls” was added to the name of the new city in 1896 because a series of rapids in the river had been converted to a waterfall by the construction of the dam. Until 1904, an Ojibwe village of 40 families was located where the Thief River and Red Lake Rivers meet.
The Great Northern and the Soo Line Railroads brought prosperity when Thief River Falls became a center for shipping wheat. Today, the city continues its entrepreneurial spirit, preserving and respecting the past, yet growing and moving toward the future, especially in the manufacturing and distribution industries.

peder engelstad pioneer village
The Pennington County Historical
Society, which was organized in the
1930s, is responsible for maintaining
the Peder Engelstad Pioneer Village.
Officially opened in 1976, the museum
and village provide a living history of
Thief River Falls. From its early years as
a rural community, to later years when
Thief River Falls became an important
regional economic hub, the city has
grown and prospered.
Peder Engelstad Pioneer Village, named
after a local Norwegian immigrant,
consists of 19 buildings with over 25,000
individual items on display. Buildings
include seven late-1800s log houses; a
Swedish Lutheran church, built in 1916;
two railroad building depots and two
cabooses; a one-room schoolhouse
dating back to 1908; five original stores
(including a blacksmith shop, general
store, and beauty and barber shops); a
restored two-story home; a large farm
and auto machinery building; and a
museum.
The museum and buildings are open to
the public Memorial Day through Labor
Day with guided tours available. Check
our Events Calendar (beginning on page
6) for a schedule of special activities at
the Village.

From completion of construction in 1914 until 1967, when passenger train service was terminated, the Depot was a hub of community activity almost 24 hours a day. At the height of its use, the Depot saw 13 passenger trains arrive and depart each day. Following a successful “Save the Depot” fundraising campaign in 1994-95, the City decided to renovate and remodel the building for use as City Hall. The completed project retained most of the building’s significant interior features, including the terrazzo floor and wood trim and doors in the main passenger terminal area. Steam Locomotive No. 1024, a Soo Class L-4, 2-8-2 MIKA-DO, is on permanent display outside the Depot.

Like history? Like nature? Then take a stroll down our delightful Riverwalk! Fifteen pictographs (like the Ojibwe Village, Ice Harvesting and the Meehan Sawmill) are found along several miles of trail, showing what the view along the river was like many years ago. The Riverwalk travels through town along the Red Lake and Thief Rivers, passing by nine parks, three forest trails, the dam and historical sites such as the Soo Line Railroad Depot and the statue of Chief Meskokonaye (Red Robe). A riverwalk was installed along the Red Lake River in Hartz Park, becoming one of the longest and most beautiful of the Riverwalk segments. Brochures and maps are available at the Thief River Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau and at area motels. Don’t miss this wonderful Thief River Falls attraction!

With 45 separate sites and side trips along the way, bird watchers and lovers of
wildlife will find this a virtual paradise! Note: the trail is now connected to Manitoba’s
birding trail to form an international birding trail!

unique collection of habitats which provide homes
for a tremendous variety of birds. Agassiz National
Wildlife Refuge, the largest wildlife refuge in the
state of Minnesota, is an incredible birding treasure,
located just a short drive from Thief River Falls. The
Refuge is a haven for as many as 280 species of

snowmobiling the northwoods of Mn Thief River Falls has access to more than 500 miles of groomed trails that interconnect to over 1,500 miles of trails in northwest Minnesota. Thief River Falls is a snowmobile hub for northwest Minnesota with five different trails lead-ing out of the city. Snowmobilers can choose from countless daily loop rides ranging from 50-200 miles. Snowmobiling was born in this part of Minnesota and the many food and fuel stops along the trails welcome all riders, whatever their brand.
Trails to the west connect with the North Dakota trail system at the communities of Oslo and Hallock. Trails to the north connect to the community of Roseau and from there to the Canadian border and east to the Warroad and Baudette trail systems. To the south, riders take trails that connect with Bemidji and Detroit Lakes. Each trail is unique in offering a variety of terrain including river riding and picturesque wilder-ness trails.
Arctic Cat snowmobiles have been manufactured in Thief River Falls for over 35 years. The Arctic Cat plant is listed as having one of the top 250 plant tours in the nation in the book entitled “Watch It Made In The USA: A Visitors Guide To The Companies That Make Your Favorite Products.” Plant tours are free of charge and offered weekdays at 1 p.m. (See Tours on page 20). thief river falls area fishing
The Red Lake River, in the
Thief River Falls area, offers
excellent fishing. Whether
you’re in waders, a float tube,
canoe or just fishing from
the bank, the opportunity
for walleyes, northern pike,
smallmouth bass, crappies
and a host of other species is
good.
Accessing the river is not
a problem with two boat
landings within the city limits.
You can also get to the river
through both city parks and
below the dam.
Waterfowl and small game
hunters coming to the
Thief River Falls area should
remember to pack a fishing
rod. There is a fall run of
walleyes in the Red Lake River.
Walleyes will move upriver
and hold below the dam in
October—a jig and minnow
is all it takes. With parking lots
on both sides of the river and
a walkway on the east side,
access is easy.
Hunt in the morning, fish
the Red Lake River in the
afternoon. Visitors to the Thief
River Falls area can have the
best of both worlds! 206 Knight Ave. N, Thief River Falls, MN 56701
