In 2010, I discovered one of the most inspiring places I have ever been : China. I stayed in Shanghai four months,working there and travelling around. Four months, just enough to feed up my mind with colors, observations, fee-lings and to understand a bit the com-plexity of this fascinating fast-chan-ging culture.China is a country of contrasts, where modernity doesn’t break up with tradi-tions, where nature and cities know how to get along, where you can see a man taking a nap in the middle of a super crowded and noisy street, or practice Tai Chi at the feet of a skyscraper.

As a good european designer (and consu-mer!), i was really curious to dis-cover the Ikea shop in Shanghai, and see how the famous swedish brand was taking care of the chinese market. Li-ving in China is living in a constant change of scenary, and sometimes it’s good to feel home. That’s what I felt at Ikea. Everything was the same, same products, same spaces, same weird na-mes, («EKTORP», «SOLSTA»...). Only the chinese crowd, the people sleeping in sofas or playing cards in the kitchen were different. I noticed that chinese consumers were coming to Ikea to taste the occidental way of life, to pick up ideas to rearrange their living roon, without necessarily buying goods, still a bit expensive for them.

As I said before, what is good with Ikea is that wherever you go in the world the place is the same and you feel home. Products are universal, practi-cal. However, it has been interesting to observe that chinese consumers were more attracted to an «EKTORP» sofa with flower patterns than the simplicity of Billy, the famous shelve. This brou-ght me to wonder how we could rethink, adapt, invent some products to fit more chinese expectations and culture wi-thout losing the soul of the brand.
This book is the result of my reflection about Ikea in China,I identified 3 main directions, 3 do-mestic landscapes starting from 3 main trends : RELAX! , FOLLOW THE FLOW, BE WILD!
