The symposium pursues an understanding of ecology as an epochal concept , around which a new semant ics for the descr ipt ion of our technologica l condi t ion has been crysta l l is ing s ince at least the mid-20th century , and perhaps as ear ly as the end of the 19th . Against th is background, the h istor ica l and systemat ic , ep istemologica l and ontologica l contours of our genera l ecologica l const i tut ion are to be d isc losed. A par t icu lar a im wi l l be to c lar i fy the extent to which the genera l ecologisat ion is re lated to, and perhaps even created by, the far- reaching deterr i tor ia l isat ion of contemporary capi ta l ism, i ts media and technoscient i f ic mobi l isat ion and i ts posthumanist machinery of exploi tat ion. The symposium overa l l serves to demonstrate th is epochal movement , st i l l unthought as such, which leads us to media technologies as the technoscient i f ic grounding of an era character ised by new envi ronmenta l agencies , and of a rad ica l ly envi ronmenta l way of being. The chal lenges and perspect ives ra ised by th is movement wi l l be explored, par t icu lar ly wi th respect to cr i t ica l media theory and theory of technology.
