May Edition 2017
President Report
The
Dear Members
The May newsletter marks the end of the patrolling season for the 2016
-2017 season.
As the season finishes I am very proud that Maroochydore SLSC has
kept the great tradition of ‘No Lives Lost Between the Flags’ and
thank every Volunteer Patrol Member for a great season. Here’s some
statistics on what Surf Life Savers across Queensland have achieved in
the 2016/17 season:
In excess of 460,000 hours Patrolling hours
70,000 Preventive Actions & Over 928 Rescues Performed
I would like to thank all of the volunteers who organised and cooked up
a storm at the end of season Lifesaving and Surf Sports BBQ lunch. A
great day was had by all!
Have a safe off-season and I will be looking forward to seeing you at
our 101st Annual Dinner and Annual General Meeting, Sat 10 June.

Lifesaving
The patrol season is now complete and
what a season it has been. The majority
of patrols have performed admirably
both in attendance and in quality of
lifesaving and presentation. This week
we will be crunching statistics from
SurfGuard to determine our award
winners, to be presented at the Annual
Dinner.
Our final inspection in the Buhk-Wilkes
competition fell on Wade Lee’s Patrol 2.
With a score of 340 / 346, this is the
best result we’ve had in recent years and
should ensure we meet our goal of a top
5 finish. Patrol Captains and Board of
Life Saving members have implemented
a number of initiatives to improve
standards this season and overall, we
have succeeded. Next season, we’ll be
better again.
Acknowledgement for lifesaving
excellence this month goes to Cody
Surawski for his involvement in three
rescues on Easter Monday. Cody holds
all the qualifications and along with PC
Mike Rawlings and Corey Schuhen
(also all quals), form a formidable trio
that deliver operational patrols and
faced some of the toughest conditions
this season.
On the topic of qualifications, I hear
from some, a reluctance to do courses
as it is harder to find a sub. I’d like to
dispel this theory and point out that
the more depth on each patrol, the
better the patrol can manage
absentees (even without a sub at
times). The off-season from patrolling
may be a more convenient time to get
a course or two done so please let the
office know if you’d like to register
for any courses (after a well-earned
break that is).
Finally, my sincere thanks to all
members who have contributed in red
and yellow and lifesaving support
functions this season for
Maroochydore SLSC. We have faced
challenges and met these with varying
degrees of success. Some initiatives
are ‘Works In Progress’ overall
though, we can be extremely proud of
what we delivered in 2016-17.
I look forward to seeing many of you
at the Annual Dinner (June 10) and
celebrating the top performers from
the season that has just been.
See you on the beach.
