On Sunday, September 14, 2014, I am being inducted into the Sander-son High School Athletic Hall of Fame in Raleigh. I am humbly honored. I taught and coached there from 1974-1989 before moving back home to Pamlico County. I have lots of team photos from that 15 year period that I have saved in a drawer. But gradually over the years, the faces of all were still familiar, but the names of many were gone. I had not notated their names on the backs of all the pictures.
The former Athletic Director, Bob Catapano, invited me to join him this summer in the school library so that we could look through old yearbooks and recreate statistics of wins and losses from the tennis, softball, volleyball, and gymnastics teams that I had coached. It was fun. We spirited away four hours reminiscing and remembering each athlete and updating each other on where they were now. There was a face + a name and CLICK = a snippet of a memory slid back into place.
The 70’s era was significant for education, athletics, and women. In 1974 Title IX legislation decreed that there should be no more discrimination in education because of a person’s sex. I had my first female sanctioned athletic team in 1974 and my first male students in Physical Education class in 1975. It was a huge time of change in education and a large step into an uncharted so-cial experiment. I wasn’t particularly prepared for the nuances of teaching boys in Phys. Ed., but I embraced the possibilities of no boundaries for challenging the girls I coached.
How does this relate to our lives at Bethany Christian Church in 2014?
Firstly, take time to be an historian like Dixie Willis, Neva McCotter, Nora Kennel, and Janci Cahoon. Write down your thoughts after a particular event at the church and tag your pictures with the names of those photographed. Janci makes a note in her choir hymnal of the date when each new hymn is sung or a “special” is presented to the congregation. Brain cells die…but memories don’t need to. You just need a trigger to pass the significance of the memory on to the next generation. Make a special note on the” picture” in your mind later this month when Reverend Anna Perry delivers her first, for-real sermon and greets you as you leave the sanctuary.
And thus the second part…Embrace the fact that the people of Bethany took a huge stride into the possibilities of experiencing God’s Word from a woman’s point of view. I’m pretty sure we’ll find that we will hear and see God’s Word sim-ply through her Christian eyes with our love of Christ as the tie that binds. My Lord, it’s been forty years. Peace to all and Praise God!
Welcome Reverend Anna and Casey Perry.

The official Board of Bethany Christian
Church met on Sunday, September 7, 2014 in
the Fellowship Hall.
Board Chairperson, John Beeman, Jr., wel-
comed everyone, called the meeting to order at
7:03 and lit a candle representing the body of
Christ in our midst. He followed with prayer
asking that the Lord guide us in conducting the
church’s business in His way.
The minutes of the August meeting were read and approved.
FINANCE Treasurer Randy Beeman distributed the fi-
nance report. He noted three items: the collec-
tion on 5th Sunday for the Regional Capital
Campaign of $127.41, a donation from the
Pamlico District for Operation Veggie Box of
$1000.00, and the transfer of Building Funds
for the parking lot of $9,173.00.
ELDER’S REPORT Doug Brinson reported that there were 57
names on the prayer list. Some from the com-
munity and from the church are in critical con-
dition now. Our prayers are with them. He
happily reported that the vegetable garden is
planted and doing well and that the preacher is
coming in three weeks.
DIACONATE REPORT Melissa Watson stated that the Diaconate had
not met in this month but would meet again on
November 2nd.
YOUTH Emily Harper reported that there will be a
meeting of anyone wishing input into the new
year’s Youth Program on Wednesday, August
24th at 5:30.
CWF Melissa reported that CWF volunteers are
continuing to refurbish the minister’s office by
painting, moving copiers and computers, and
by adding new furniture.
There were no reports from the CMF, Schol-
arship, Insurance, and Worship Commit-
tees.
BUDGET In Buck Jones’ absence John stated that the
Budget Committee would be meeting soon and
would also fulfill the Stewardship responsibili-
ties. Serving on the Committee are Buck Jones,
Randy Beeman, Kelli Bailey, Christine Bee-
man, Chris Watson, and John Beeman as Board
Chairperson.
OUTREACH John informed the group that Roger Surprenant
had received a request from Senior Services for
donations to help with the Meals on Wheels
program. Roger will contact them for more
information.
PROPERTY REPORT John reported that multiple changes will be
coming to the church office. New, smaller, less
noisy, fluorescent lights will be installed. The
outside lights and inside smoke detectors will
be replaced. The newly painted walls look
great. The 1987 air conditioning unit has given
up the ghost and needs to be replaced; can’t be
fixed. Willis Electric has created a proposal for
a newer 2 ton unit with a higher 13 SEER that
will be more efficient that the old one for
$3226.00. John moved and Doug seconded that
Bethany accept the cost for the new heat pump/
air conditioning unit. Motion passed.
John stated that the parking lot completion is
getting closer. Smooth rocks have been put in
place and the lot is covered in fine gravel. The
contractor is waiting on a sub contractor for the
actual paving.
HOUSEKEEPING REPORT Christine read a note from Renee thanking the
Board for the use of the Fellowship Hall for the
family reunion and birthday party. Renee will
continue to look for a good price on new vac-
uums.
COMMUNICATIONS REPORT Christine reported for Mac that the video fea-
ture in the sanctuary was still unreliable. Mac
will go ahead and purchase a new computer so
the system will be functional before the revival
and homecoming.
ACTIVITIES REPORT Janci informed the group that there would be no
Board Game night in September. A group from
the church will be traveling to the Charleston
area from the 19th through to the 22nd. Everyone
wished them a safe journey.

OPERATION VEGGIE BOX The Fall garden has been planted. Volunteers
are needed to weed and be ready for harvest.
IMPLEMENTATION TEAM REPORT Christine stated that the Team had met today
and had five areas ready for a report. The
Crossroad’s Revival plans were coming along.
Currently they are working on the preparation
plans for the three evening meals and on public-
ity prior to the revival.
Christine relayed a request from Sara Spalding
to purchase a traveling set of handbell pads
which would be used the most during the
Christmas season. She asked for the balance of
the Special Music line item in the budget. It
was $847.59. The cost of the 8 pads would be
$480. The Board will act on the request at the
October meeting.
Christine also informed the group that Sara
presented the Implementation Team with plans
to host a “Feast of Saint Nicholas” on Decem-
ber 6th, much like the one Roger Bennett pro-
duced in the early 1990’s. More information
will be brought before the Board at the October
meeting.
Also as an item from the I Team meeting,
Jennie proposed an addition to the Music Minis-
try after a conversation with Simon. (See article
on page 3) Jennie moved that this project re-
ceive Board approval. Shirley seconded. The
motion passed.
Christine reported that the Summer Sunday
School changes (Bible Quest for the Youth and
altered schedule/Cafe20) were completed on
August 31st. She had observed that the number of
people increased at each of the Café 20 opportuni-
ties and was pleased to see all ages participating.
Emily stated that Diana was disappointed after
today’s Sunday School class to not have the food
available in the Fellowship Hall.
PULPIT SEARCH REPORT John stated that Reverend Anna Perry had ac-
cepted the financial package that had been offered
and would be in the Bethany office on September
22nd. Her first Sunday to preach would be Sep-
tember 28th. Casey, her husband, had accepted the
manager’s position at Camp Caroline and had
been working on repainting and renovating the
Camp home this past week.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS John said that he would report back to the
Board in October about advertising for Beth-
any in the Sun Journal.
MINISTER’S REPORT John told the group that he had really en-
joyed bringing the message for the Sunday
morning service. He saw it from a different
view point. It was a very special day for
him. He thanked everyone for their support
and encouragement. It touched his heart and
caused him to grow.
The meeting adjourned at 7:42 followed by
remarks and prayer by John B in a fellow-
ship circle.
Respectfully submitted,
John Beeman, Jr. Chairman
Jennie Kennel Adams Clerk
The CrossRoads Revival on Octo-ber 16-19 will begin a year of celebrat-
ing Bethany’s 175 year history.
Get ready. There’s going to be a
pounding at Bethany. Don’t worry. It won’t be violent; just pleasant and
very loving.
The CWF is sponsoring a church-wide pounding of Reverend Anna and Casey Perry as a welcome to Bethany. Just as con-
gregations pounded in the 1800’s when a new minister came to Arapahoe, please bring a pound of this or a pound of that to help stock the Perry’s kitchen or household. (Doesn’t have to be exactly a pound). Sugar, flour, spices, soap, condiments, oils, pasta, dishwasher
detergent, soups, whatever you think you’d like to share.
Laundry baskets for the “pounds” will be in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday the 14th and 21st
We are fairly sure they will be happy with whatever we do because it will be received in the spirit of a warm welcome
Join Christine and Laurie on Thursday evenings at 6:00 for The
Daniel Plan. This is a program launched by Rev. Rick Warren
of the Saddleback Church in Orange County California.
Welcome to The Daniel Plan:
We are excited that you are starting your journey toward better health
through The Daniel Plan. This groundbreaking program will equip you with
practical tools and resources to bring health into every area of your life.
What makes it different from other wellness programs is that The Daniel
Plan was built with “love” as the motivation. It’s a reflection of God’s love
for us. It’s a story of abundance, not deprivation. A step by step approach
that helps you make small changes that lead to big results. Your journey is
one of progress, never perfection.
The Daniel Plan is framed around The Essentials: Faith, Food, Fitness, Fo-
cus and Friends – life areas that all work together to restore and sustain your
long-term health. Faith is the foundation with God as the source of the
power and the energy behind all transformational change. As you follow The
Daniel Plan, you will discover that you have a part to play in getting health-
ier, but God will energize your efforts. We have learned that doing The
Daniel Plan in community, with a group of friends is the “secret sauce”.
People who do the program together lose 50% more weight!
BETHANY HISTORY SNIPPET
In the summer of 1911, JJ Walker, ministerial student at Wilson held the Bethany revival. James B. Bennett said of it: “Our house of worship was entirely too small to accommodate the crowds. Our people now see the ne-cessity of a larger building. We hope in the near future to get about its erec-tion.”
John M. Waters began his Bethany pastorate in 1912 and continued for 47 years, a few intermissions excepted. Early in his ministry at Arapahoe a new plant was erected. August 31, 1913 was dedication day. JC Caldwell preached “a great sermon to an audi-ence estimated at 800, representing none or more counties.” The debt at the moment was $875.00 on a $3500.00 building. About this George R. Brinson reported: “The amount was more than raised in cash and pledges in a few minutes.” This was the third plant since a forest fire in 1886 de-stroyed their initial building, replaced at once, however, by a larger house of worship.

Pamlico Profile, April 20, 1961
Do you see any parallels here?
Ukulele Anyone?
At choir practice last week Elder Julia Peterson
told the story of how Mr. Jack Brinson (Doug’s
father, Sarah’s grandfather) entertained a
whole group of 1970 World’s Fair travelers
from Bethany when they stayed at Black Moun-
tain on their trip to Knoxville, TN. He sang and
played the ukulele. If you can remember his
clear tenor tones, the image is enticing.
What a wonderful segue to the fact that Simon
Spalding could begin teaching you how to play
the ukulele on Wednesday nights at 6:00 begin-
ning on September 17th. Through donations
Bethany now owns 10 of these 4-stringed in-
struments. How hard can they be to play? Simon
suggests that it would be a perfect “gateway
instrument” for playing a guitar, its dimensions
make it “one size fits all”, and it lends itself to
the best multigenerational (younger and older)
experience that Bethany might offer this Fall.
He’s already picked out the first two songs that
we’ll learn…Standing in the Need of Prayer and
He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands. The
only thing you’ll have to pay is attention to
Simon as he teaches. And you’ll probably see
Ms. Julia learning to strum.
