St. Paul's United Church of Christ Crystal Lake, Illinois The Beacon The Beacon Dear Friends, I wish you a blessed Christmas. I always like to remind people that the Church celebrates Christmas for 12 days (hence the song) — all the way up to Epiphany (January 6, 2017). I hope that you will observe and enjoy all 12 days this year — when the stores switch to “after-Christmas sales” your Christmas is just getting started. In fact, when the world sings in the New Year, you’re only half way done celebrating Christmas. I hope you are able to celebrate Christmas. I know that Christ- mas, for a variety of reasons, is very hard for some people. Perhaps your celebration this year may include someone who is struggling this season. Maybe someone is struggling with finances or a serious health issue. Maybe someone is missing a loved one who has passed or moved away. Maybe someone is feeling overwhelmed or depressed or lonely. How can we include that someone in our Christmas? Perhaps each of these 12 days, rather than looking for calling birds, French hens or gold rings, we might try looking for someone who is struggling and ask ourselves, how can I celebrate Christmas with this someone? What can I do or give or be that would be consonant with Christ’s coming to me? It doesn’t need to be only on December 25th. I wish you a blessed Christmas. Page 2 The Beacon

Dear Friends, Christmas is nearly upon us. It’s a time for celebration. We celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. We celebrate together with our family and our community. And, of course, we celebrate this joyous occasion with our church. I find that one of the best ways to celebrate is by giving. The Bible tells us that Jesus himself said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35. While there are many ways for us to give, I would suggest that giving to our church is high on my list. A thriving church needs donations of both time and money to continue to thrive. There are many people here at St. Paul’s that give generously of themselves. And each individual’s gifts are multiplied when we come together as a church to give back to our community. We address hunger with our participation in the Crystal Lake Food Pantry and the annual CROP Walk for Hunger. We provide no cost family entertainment options with our Trunk or Treat, Pig Roast and Easter Egg Hunt. We provide direct support to those in need with our participation in mission trips and our annual giving tree at Christmas. These are just a few examples of the many ways our congrega-tion gives of themselves. I would like to offer my sincere thanks to everyone who helps make St. Paul’s the great church that it is. And I would love to see us continue to grow and give more back to our community. If you would like to get more involved in any of our activities or have a great idea for something new, please let me or any of the Council members know and we will be happy to help you get connected. Bob Wilson, Council President

Dear St. Paul’s Family and Friends, I actually forgot that I would be “Wreath of Friendship” recipient this year. What a lovely surprise when Karen Hansen rang my bell and presented me with a delicious assortment of goodies, a darling hand colored Nativity scene and a votive candle from St. Paul’s Christian Preschool, and a beautiful poinsettia. Many thanks to everyone who helped with this loving and caring St. Paul’s tradition. You certainly helped turn my rather “blue” Christmas into a more “Merry” one. Bless you,

Nancy Kramer To my St. Paul’s Friends, I want to thank all the caring people who donated the goodies and beautiful poinsettia plan to help cheer me up. Thanks to Bruce Nulle for the delivery. Thanks also for all the get well wishes and sympathy cards Art and I received. With much appreciation, Marlene Kuhlman My hearty thanks and surprise for the “Wreath of Friendship” delivered by Karen Hansen. It is so nice to be remem-bered. The poinsettia is beautiful and the goodies so welcome. Bless you. Betty Kubat Thank you for the wonderful Wreath of Friendship cookies and poinsettia. I really, really appreciated it. As your new Chairman of the Columbarium Committee, I would like to invite you to check out the two new color brochures we have just printed. One is on the table near the elevator and the other is in the pews in the sanctuary. We have added more information on an easier payment plan for both the single and companion niches, and also for the “Walk of Re-membrance” pavers. These are available for not only members and for-mer members but your entire family, spouses, and siblings. Have you considered a “Walk of Remembrance” paver as a memorial for a lost love one this Christmas? For more information you may contact Karen Hansen, 815-455-1385 or any of the following committee members: Carla Voss, Co-chair/Secretary Donna Butler Becky Burns Sue Phillips Elizabeth Speros Jack Vogt Gary Woodrum Pastor Greg Lucas

St. Paul’s Preschool would like to thank all those who made Christmas a happy time for the children. The BOCE gave all the families a candy Advent calendar along with an activity packet to follow the season. Handmade on Main came to our school to help families make ceramic pieces to have as a family keepsake. We celebrated a Family Night with songs for everyone to enjoy and appreciated Peter Halasz for being our sound technician. Santa and Bruce the rein-deer in-training brought gifts for the children and engaged in some great interactions. We would like to thank Peter Halasz and Lindsey Shaffer for offering their time with this. During this season, our preschoolers also practiced giving back to others. We made 50 gifts for donations to the Wreath of Friendship baskets. We made cards to sell as a fundraiser for Abby Greene and her medical treatment. We also made gifts for our special friends each class has adopted. We donated more food to the Food Pantry and conducted prayer times for people on our prayer list. December is a busy month, and we are truly blessed to both give and receive. We hope everyone is able to practice those skills this season. FALL 2017 ENROLLMENT: We will begin fall 2017 enrollment at the end of January. All members will be able to regis-ter before the general public. If you would like more enrollment information for a 2-5 year old, please call the preschool at 815-479-9770. Members will also receive a discount in tuition. Sheila Halasz, Director

St. Paul’s Preschool along with Santa and his reindeer

As the year comes to a close, I want to thank you for all you have done to support the Food Pantry this year. You have supported the capital campaign to buy a new building, donated food, eaten ice cream, volunteered at the Food Pantry, walked in the Crop Walk, and participated in Community Harvest (St. Paul’s donated 800 lbs. of food!). Your com-mitment and generosity to the Food Pantry is greatly appreciated.

On November 10, St. Paul’s youth packed lunch and breakfast bags to be given to the clients. Thanks to all who helped! The new Crystal Lake Food Pantry will open to clients on December 28. This facility, located at 42 East St., will provide much needed room for shopping and storage of food. There will be community open houses in January. Please plan on coming to see our new building. I will let everyone know the dates when they become available. St. Paul’s will be serving at the Food Pantry 12 times in 2017. Our service days are: January 25, February 22, March 29, April 28, April 29, May 26, June 30, July 28, August 30, September 29, November 1 and December 1. If you are interested in volunteering on any of these days, please let me know. Upcoming 2017 Food Pantry dates: Wednesday, January 25 St. Paul’s Service Day Wednesday, February 22 St. Paul’s Service Day Wednesday, March 29 St. Paul’s Service Day Thank you for making 2016 an exciting year at the Crystal Lake Food Pantry. The Wreath of Friendship is an annual event that honors our church family homebound friends and our church families who lost a loved one during the year. Plants and baked goods are delivered right before the holidays to our honored families. This year, we made up 33 plates of cookies and breads and delivered poinsettias for our church family members and friends.

The Wreath of Friendship Committee would like to thank all who made it possible this year by giving your time and tal-ents. Thank you to all those “great bakers” who baked the delicious cookies and breads: Sondra Matterness, Marilyn Peaco, Cheryll Triefenbach, Joyce Lucas, Karen Hansen, Sheryl Gee, St. Paul’s Youth Group, Carla Voss, Lau-rie Revak, Margaret Tobin, Barb Thrun, Sue Phillips, Marianne Spencer, Janis Braun, Nancy Kramer, Michele Eich, Linda Bichler, Tracey Brady, Krista Huffman, and St. Paul’s Preschool for their candles and nativity scenes. Thank you to Donna and Bob Reber for their poinsettia donation. We would also like to recognize our delivery “elves.” They were: Marianne and Warren Spencer, Karen Hansen, Joyce Lucas, Bruce Nulle, Krista Huffman, Fred Mullard, Marilyn Peaco, Mary Katenhusen, Tracey Brady, Tasha MacKenzie, and Katie Zeliasz. Finally, a special thank you to Marilyn Peaco and Karen Hansen for assembling the cookie plates and to the many people who donated baked goods anonymously and donated funds to purchase the poinsettias. May God bless you all! May our acts of kindness and remembrance spread our St. Paul’s Christmas cheer and bring glory to God’s name. Sheryl Gee and Marilyn Peaco

The Funeral Luncheon Committee desperately needs more volunteers. Some new church members may not be aware of the “All Church Women” Committee. When a luncheon is requested by a bereaved family of our church, we are the group who takes care of it. We feel we provide a very worthwhile, Chris-tian service which is very much appreciated by the family. Our “caller” lists are getting worn pretty thin.

We need many new names to call. Remember —This is an “All Church” mission, and it doesn’t take much of a commit-ment to help out. All you are asked to do is make either iello, baked beans, a potato dish, dessert bars, etc., or/and help in the kitchen (especially needed) the day of the luncheon. Please if you are not already on our calling list, would you please contact Nancy Kramer or the church office if you are willing to donate food and/or work at the luncheon? Your Worship Committee needs your help on Sunday mornings with ushering, lay reading, and greeting. We need your help in all of these areas and you can help in more than one of these as well. Being an usher, lay reader and greeter are easy, fun and much appreciated. Please contact Ken Hansen if you would like to join our ushering group, Mary Katenhusen to be a lay reader and Marilyn Peaco if we can schedule you to greet at one of our services or contact the church office.

HOW TO KEEP WARM IN CHURCH

1. Rush to the front of the sanctuary. That will warm you up and you’ll avoid the draft in the back of the church.

2. Invite your neighbors and friends and sit 12 people to a pew.

3. Wear thermal underwear (in the appropri-ate liturgical colors, of course.)

4. Wait for an unfamiliar hymn — and then watch the sparks.

The Christmas Cookie Fellowship Time Committee would like to thank all of the contributors of cookies and candy to our December 18 Fellowship Time. St. Paul’s is very fortunate to have won-

derful, talented bakers in our church family. We had a fantastic display of Christmas cookies and candy and we hope everyone had the opportunity to be able to try these delicious creations and share in fellowship. The apple cider was good too! We hope you all have a blessed Christmas! Sheryl Gee
