LEMONGRASS (herbal)
Invigorate, Elevate, PurifySourced in India-- a genus of about 55 species of grasses.
It grows in dense clumps that can grow 6 feet in height and 4
feet in width.
It is used as a medicinal herb in India and it is common in Asian
cuisine. Anti-fungal, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, insecticidal.
In African and South American countries, it is popularly used
for making tea and used in soups for flavour.
• Massage: Ease muscle, joint, rheumatoid arthritis pain,
sprains, spasms, and heat (fever), improves circulation
• Purifying and toning to the LYMPH and SKIN
• EXCELLENT FOR INHALATION and DIFFUSING
• Externally used as an antibacterial in salves to kill bacteria,
or spritzers/roll-ons to ward off insects
• Popular as a fragrance to cosmetics, soaps, and homemade
deodorizers. Use caution in the bath.
General Use
• Never use in the eyes.
• Keep out of the ears, nose and ‘south of the border’
without professional advice
• Skin sensitivity has to be determined. Use vegetable
oil to dilute, not water, when the oil is on the body.
Start slow.
• Follow label directions. They are there to protect
you.
• Keep your blends in dark glass bottles, away from
heat and light
• Shelf life: 6 months - 6 years and some longer.
• Enemies are heat, light, oxygen, your unwashed
fingers. Citrus oils are the shortest life span.
10/26/2016
14
SENSITIVITY
Fragrance allergy affects 1% and is
usually due to synthetics
You may restrict your use to the bottoms of the feet where the skin is most tolerant if needed
Of all of your oils, Lemongrass may create the most skin sensitivity. Start slow.
Oils For Internal Use
• Not recommended by NSP as your safe use
of oils is the goal. We train you within a
scope of use that is considered safe for
beginners and non-licensed individuals.
• A licensed aroma therapist or doctor may
recommend internal use for certain oils
• FDA: Many essential oils are generally
recognized as safe (GRAS) as flavouring
agents (1-2 drops in foods) Common
examples: lemon, peppermint
* Glycerin makes oils water soluble.
Popular Uses
• TOPICAL: Approximately 4 drops of EO per 20 ml of carrier oil. Apply to the external area.
• BATH: Add 2-8 drops of EO to equal parts of shampoo or liquid soap. Remain in the water 10-20 min.
• DIRECT INHALATION: 1-6 drops EO to a handkerchief or tissue (inhale 5 min up to 3x daily)
• STEAM INHALATION: 2-12 drops EO to a bowl of steaming water/facial steamer. Inhale 5-10 minutes up to 3x daily
• COMPRESS: Add 2 drops EO to 500 ml warm water in a bottle. Shake well, then saturate the compress. Squeeze lightly and apply the compress. Cover with a towel. Leave 2 - 4 hours up to 3x daily.
• SPRITZER Bottle: Add 15 - 45 drops of EO or a blend to 2 oz. (60 ml) water. Shake well before applying to affected area.
10/26/2016
15
MAKING A COMPRESS
Apply a warm-as-tolerated wet towel followed by
a dry towel. Relax 30 min. (Optional: You can
also apply warm heated stones over the towels)
Check that the heat is tolerable
If there is any sensation of
burning, add Carrier oil and
ask again. If you have to remove
an oil, simply use soap and water.
WHEN TO MAKE A LINIMENT
• Up to 10 drops of the preferred EO to a
teaspoon of water, raw apple cider vinegar, or
witch hazel
• Shake before using
• Moisture helps the oils penetrate and dilutes
the oils for fast, even distribution
• Liniments are preferred to assist healthy foot
immunity and to promote comfort in large
areas of skin.
