Martin Zuch came from a financial background and now runs Beesweet, a company producing and selling honey and it's by-products in Zambia. He talked us through the opportunities, challenges and lessons learned from his experiences there.

Zambia

• Population – 12.9 million

• One of the least developed countries, even by SSA standard

• Growth rate of 7.6% per year

• HIV prevalence exceeding

• 80% Zambians live in poverty

• 63% live on less than $1.25 per day

• Infant mortality – 69 per 1,000 in 2010 (UK 4.6)

Lack of diversification of means of income

Ensuring sustainable harvest from indigenous species of bees

Five beehives are distributed per household,

increasing accordingly with performance

Nearly 1000 families impacted so far

Healthy swarm being transferred

Households produce an average of 27kg of honey per hive, per year, enabling up to

between $150 to $400 additional income per year

There are currently 6 schemes in operation

Each scheme has an average of 100 households

Average family size is 7

Project currently benefiting 4200 people in vicinity

Farmers are paid $1 per kg of raw honey

Currently, the honey is sold locally for $4 per kg

Future expansion to theo Regional market:

southern and central Africa

o International market

• Wax

• Propolis

• Royal Jelly
