What is an iamb?

• It is a two syllable set where the first syllable is unstressed and the second syllable is stressed

• They are called “couplets.”

The iamb is very commom in the English

language.

We often speak in iambic pentameter without even realizing it!

iambic pentameter are 5 iambs or couplets in a row

Take a look....

• I’d like to have you meet a friend of mine.

Look at the following song from “The Hobbit”

Can you figure out the iambs?

The wind was on the withered heath,

but in the forest stirred no leaf:

There shadows lay by night and day,

and dark things silent crept beneath.

The wind was on the withered heath,

but in the forest stirred no leaf:

There shadows lay by night and day,

and dark things silent crept beneath.

Now it’s your turn....

• Try to write 2 lines of poetry where each line contains 5 iambs

• If you succeed, you will have written your poem in iambic pentameter!
