So what does this mean for you? As you use the annotated glossary (the smaller

packet) the numbers of the lines may be off, because the play doesn’t indicate which lines are Iambic Pentameter and which aren’t.

As you number the lines (which needs to happen, so that you can correctly cite any quotes you use), you have to be careful how you count the lines.

Journal: The Servants: Ariel and Caliban

For Ariel, create a two-column page, on 1 side label it “Natural occurrences”, on the other label it “Ariel’s actions.”

As you read the play write down lines that Ariel describes his actions in his column, then describe the natural occurrence that it represents.

For Caliban, create a three-column chart labeled: How others describe

CalibanHow he describes from

himselfHow his actions describe

him As you read the play

write down quotes that fit in each of the columns.

In your journal label two pages “The Servants” on the first page, add “Ariel” to the title, on the second, add “Caliban.”

William Strachey, the explorer, of early Americas described a phenomenon know as St. Elmo’s Fire :

“Only upon Thursday night, [we] had an apparition of a little round light, like a faint Star, trembling, and streaming along with a sparkling blaze, half the height upon the Main Mast, and shooting sometimes from Shroud to Shroud, attempting to settle as it were upon any of the four Shrouds; and for three or four hours together, or rather more, half the night it kept with us, running sometimes along the Mainyard to the very end, and then returning.”

Find the lines of Act 1.2 where Ariel’s actions could be responsible for this.

Ariel: Nature

On the ship: What lines demonstrates selfishness? Is there a difference between self-preservation and self-centeredness?

How does Prospero ‘acquire’ his art (Magic)? How does he relate to others while a ‘magician’ and while a ‘duke’?

Keep track of Ariel’s descriptions of his actions.

How is Caliban describe/act?

How are Ariel and Caliban a ‘foil’ for humanity?

Yesterday we read the lines from Miranda below:

“I should sin/To think but nobly of my grandmother./ Good wombs have borne bad sons” (1.2.118-120)

What is the implication of “sons” being plural? How does this imply the theme of Nature vs Nurture? What would Miranda think about Caliban, when

speaking of Nature or Nurture? Does this insight of Miranda change our thinking

of her being Naive?
