Before and After By RogerMann
After a few weeks of feeling “surfless” and getting as anxious as Matt McConaughey in the movie Surfer Dude, a swell was finally forecast. I was hearing about it from every surfer I knew, plus the news, Surfline, and Wetsand. Expectations were high and it isn’t hard to figure out that everybody will be on it. I got a phone call from my So. Cal. son to get in gear on Monday because it was breaking at El Capitan. Unfortunately, I was on “child duty” with a sick child and wrapped up Tuesday at her school. I couldn’t bug out and it was tough. 3 weeks since surfing never does any old gent any good. Surf fitness is out the window in a couple of days for some of us. Wednesday became the call for me. It was before the big “hype,” though it had been breaking fine the Monday and Tuesday I missed. It had been windless, glassy, and head high on the sets. What else could a longboarder ask for? Wednesday was all I hoped it would be. It was sunny, warm, and glassy early. I surfed hard for over an hour and exclaimed to the few riders in the water, “It is good we are here today, tomorrow will be a zoo.” We shared well, even though I only recognized one local in the water. The other guys were remarkably silent and distant. We were all just getting our fill in the peace and quiet of the day. Thursday was the “big day.” Yea, it was a couple of feet overhead, but real junky. I went down with the camera to do some snap shots. I also took my surf stuff, but I was wiped out from the day before and it just wasn’t terrific. Isn’t that often the case when big swells are predicted? There were more people driving around and checking spots with only some getting wet. Naples Reef had about 30 cars parked there and so did El Capitan. You keep asking yourself, “Do any surfers work.” I know they do, but not too often when the swell is “on.” Today, Friday, it was worse junk. It would have been a good day to surf because everybody went yesterday when I was watching through the camera. However, it just wasn’t my day. My friend will have some nice Christmas card shots from Thursday and he will be stoked, and that is a good thing. Surfing has just the right reinforcement schedule to keep us hooked for a lifetime. It is sort of like gambling, even as good as surf reports are getting. Yet, it is still a crap-shoot. What do you figure your area offers you? I figure, even with the surf cameras, 20 to 30% at best. Heck, at Jalama (I rarely go there these days) those would be good numbers. The turn-around dry days drive me crazy. As often as I surf poor waves, I still can’t force myself in the water sometimes. It has become obvious to me for a long time that it is easier to surf before or after the supposed “great day.” Often it is better, though smaller, than a “dream come true” for the masses. I know that among our club membership, it is the way for many of us. We once went, as kids, without the modern convenience of surf cams and media squawk. Now, even my local newsman on TV is a surfer and talks it up, “Yea, it was big and I was on it.” Do you remember going surfing without knowing the tide, the swell angle, the interval between swells, the origin of the swells, what the wind was going to do, what was happening to the bottom with the sand and rocks? I bet you do and it was possibly greater fun to “luck out” every now and then. Now, it may be “before and after,” taking a lesser sized wave, and sleeping in on the “biggest swell of the season.” I don’t know if that is laziness, or just common sense, but it does work for some of us.
