METAL FRAMING
A metal framing system, also known more generally throughout the industry as Unistrut®, was
designed as a site adaptable mechanical support method that provides an economical solution
for virtually any industrial, mining, petrochemical, infrastructure or commercial application and
complements almost any installation of cable, pipe, HVAC or general support structure. It is
easily installed and offers full flexibility to support systems for any application, incorporating a
comprehensive array of brackets, fittings and accessories available in a wide variety of channel
profiles, material thicknesses and finishes.
Load RatingsAllowable slip out, pull out and load ratings for the metal framing product range have been
derived by calculation based on ultimate load capacity prior to product failure incorporating a
1.5 factor of safety. Metal framing is typically used in either a support beam or support column
arrangement.
Support Beam technical data lists maximum allowable uniform load and mid span deflection
at various spans. Together with this data, a loading to span was designated which will give a
deflection ratio of 1/200 of the span. This will give a recognized practical beam deflection to
minimize sagging of the beam under load.
Support Column technical data lists maximum lateral loading at a range on unbraced heights.

Channel And CombinationsChannels and Combinations are cold formed to size from low carbon strip steel (minimum yield strength of 250 Mpa) on a rolling mill. The channel is manufactured with a continuous opening with the two edges turned inwards. Rigid mechanical fixing may be achieved by engaging the in turned edges of the channel with the serrated grooves in the spring nuts.
Spring NutsSpring nuts are produced from steel bar and, after manufacture, zinc plated nuts can be case hardened to order. Hardened Spring nuts should be used with grade 8.8 zinc plated hex set screw. Generally, the South African market uses only

unhardened Spring nuts together with grade 4.8 zinc plated hex set screw. Spring nuts are rectangular in shape with the ends shaped as to allow a quarter turn clockwise and to prevent further turning in the channel. Two toothed grooves in the top of the nut engage the return lips of the channel, in a vice-grip like manner.

Wrap Around Cantilever Brackets
The Cantilever Bracket system is manufactured from mild steel and utilises F1000 channels welded to a back plate. All cantilever support arms for cable ladders and trays should be 50mm longer than the width of the cable ladder or tray used. The safe working load for cantilever arms is uniformly distributed over the length of the cantilever support arm. Standard Finish on Cantilever Brackets is Hot Dip Galvanised.

FittingsStandard Fittings form an integral part of the metal framing product. Various standard fittings allow the installer to quickly assemble any solid structure to support cable management, condensers and piping, without requiring welding on site. An added advantage is that it is easy to make adjustments, dismantle and re-use all components, as and when required.
All standard fittings are available in hot dip galvanized mild steel. Standard dimensions apply to all fittings, except where noted on the part drawing and are subject to commercial tolerances.
Hole size 14mm diameter, Hole spacing 20.5mm from end of fitting, 48mm centre to centre. Fitting width 40mm and thickness 6mm unless otherwise stated.
