This lesson

• Know what “fit” means

• Know how exercise affects pulse rate and breathing rate (and why)

• Know which organs systems work togther to release energy from food

• Know muscles release energy from food by aerobic respiration

Fit?

Being fit means your body can cope with the activities you need to do

Fit

Being fit means your body can cope with the activities you need to do

To stay fit you should eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, avoid smoking, avoid alcohol and avoid drug abuse.

Let’s see how fit you

are!

How fit are you?

• In pairs one of you is going to run on the spot for 2 minutes

• You will then measure your heart rate over a period of 10 minutes

How to measure pulse

• Check your pulse at your wrist.

• Use two fingers - your index and middle.

• Count how many beats in 20 seconds and multiply that number by three to get your heart rate.

Finish for homework – due next Tuesday too!

• Graph

• Conclusion: Two sentences describing what you have discovered

During exercise

Your breathing and pulse rate increase because your cells need more glucose and oxygen for respiration.

Exercise

During exercise you muscle cells need more energy. They get it from aerobic respiration of the glucose dissolved in your blood

Glucose + oxygen carbon dioxide + water (+ energy)

What can you remember about the

lungs?

Let’s try a lung sheet!

All systems are go

• The digestive system provides the glucose

All systems are go

• The circulatory system carries the glucose and oxygen to the cells and the carbon dioxide away to the lungs.
